Stability prediction of underground entry-type excavations based on particle swarm optimization and gradient boosting decision tree

- Description: The stability of underground entry-type excavations will directly affect the working environment and the safety of staff. Empirical critical span graphs and traditional statistics learning methods can not meet the requirements of high accuracy for stability assessment of entry-type excavations. Therefore, this study proposes a new prediction method based on machine learning to scientifically adjust the critical span graph. Accordingly, the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is used to optimize the core parameters of the gradient boosting decision tree (GBDT), abbreviated as PSO-GBDT. Moreover, the classification performance of eight other classifiers including GDBT, k-nearest neighbors (KNN), two kinds of support vector machines (SVM), Gaussian naive Bayes (GNB), logistic regression (LR) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) are also applied to compare with the proposed model. Findings revealed that compared with the other eight models, the prediction performance of PSO-GBDT is undoubtedly the most reliable, and its classification accuracy is up to 0.93. Therefore, this model has great potential to provide a more scientific and accurate choice for the stability prediction of underground excavations. In addition, each classification model is used to predict the stability category of several grid points divided by the critical span graph, and the updated critical span graph of each model is discussed in combination with previous studies. The results show that the PSO-GBDT model has the advantages of being scientific, accurate and efficient in updating the critical span graph, and its output decision boundary has strict theoretical support, which can help mine operators make favorable economic decisions. © 2022

- Description: A substantial number of studies have been published since the Ninth International Workshop on Tropical Cyclones (IWTC-9) in 2018, improving our understanding of the effect of climate change on tropical cyclones (TCs) and associated hazards and risks. These studies have reinforced the robustness of increases in TC intensity and associated TC hazards and risks due to anthropogenic climate change. New modeling and observational studies suggested the potential influence of anthropogenic climate forcings, including greenhouse gases and aerosols, on global and regional TC activity at the decadal and century time scales. However, there are still substantial uncertainties owing to model uncertainty in simulating historical TC decadal variability in the Atlantic, and the limitations of observed TC records. The projected future change in the global number of TCs has become more uncertain since IWTC-9 due to projected increases in TC frequency by a few climate models. A new paradigm, TC seeds, has been proposed, and there is currently a debate on whether seeds can help explain the physical mechanism behind the projected changes in global TC frequency. New studies also highlighted the importance of large-scale environmental fields on TC activity, such as snow cover and air-sea interactions. Future projections on TC translation speed and medicanes are new additional focus topics in our report. Recommendations and future research are proposed relevant to the remaining scientific questions and assisting policymakers. © 2023 The Shanghai Typhoon Institute of China Meteorological Administration

The quality of older adults’ involvement in clinical communication with general practitioners : evidence from rural towns in Australia

- Description: Objective: A study was conducted about the putative links of older rural Australians’ health knowledge and preparation with their quality of involvement in patient-general practitioner (GP) communication during health intake visits. Methods: It was a cross-sectional study between January 2021 and April 2022. The 32-item quality of involvement in communication scale was designed and incorporated into the SurveyGizmo software. This online survey was administered by sending an email request to the Renmark Rotary Club, which actively promoted this study across five rural towns in South Australia. 121 participants completed the surveys. Mean-sum scores were calculated based on the questionnaire responses to evaluate outcomes, specifically initiation of information, active participation, and emotional expression. We employed different methods including t-tests, ANOVA, and leaner regressions to analyse data. Results: The demographic profile of participants characterised by a female predominance (58.7%, 71/121), a majority falling within the 65‒< 70 age bracket (47.1%, 57/121), and a high level of educational attainment (58.7% had completed high school or higher, 71/121). Additionally, 35% of the participants predominantly spoke a language other than English at home. Regarding the initiation of information with GPs, the mean sum-score was (20.5 ± 3.7), indicating a marginally above-average level of engagement. Contrarily, the active participation was suboptimal, as suggested by a mean sum score of (35.9 ± 6.3). Furthermore, the emotional expression was relatively low, with a mean score of (13.9 ± 1.8). Substantial variations were discerned in the quality of patient-GP communication, contingent upon factors such as educational background, language spoken at home, health literacy, and preparatory measures for clinical visits. Participants who predominantly spoke a language other than English at home demonstrated significantly lower levels of information initiation with their GPs (P < 0.001). Higher educational attainment was positively correlated with increased active participation (P < 0.001). Enhanced health literacy and thorough visit preparation were significantly associated with increased levels of active participation (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Meaningful engagement through recognition, empowerment, and support (health literacy programs) for older rural adults is suggested for improving their quality of involvement in communication with GPs. © 2023

Several articles have been published to date to address its different aspects including group management, interest extraction, message forwarding, participation incentive, and content replication. Passion moderates the relationship between exercise identity and compulsive exercise

Research is also limited by operationalisation of compulsive exercise as a unidimensional construct, despite evidence that it is best understood and examined as multi-dimensional. Given that compulsive exercise is also observed in the general exercise population, increased understanding around predictors of compulsive exercise is needed. This study examined the relationship between dimensions of compulsive exercise (Compulsive Exercise Test) with obsessive and harmonious passion (the Passion Scale) and exercise identity (the Exercise Identity Scale) in a sample of N = 1184 Australian general exercisers. Correlation, regression and moderation analyses indicated that exercise identity was associated with all dimensions of compulsive exercise, although strength and direction of relationships varied. Harmonious passion was related to several dimensions of compulsive exercise and also moderated relationships between identity with weight-control exercise, mood improvement and lack of exercise enjoyment, whereas obsessive passion moderated the relationship between identity and lack of exercise enjoyment only. Results highlight that compulsive exercise dimensions have nuanced relationships with other variables and that examination of dimensions can increase understanding around compulsive exercise. Harmonious passion predicted more aspects of compulsive exercise than obsessive passion. Individuals with high exercise identity, and those with low harmonious passion may be more at risk of poor outcomes including compulsive exercise pathology and other related outcomes. © 2023
