- Description: Background: Nursing work often occurs in complex and potentially hazardous settings. Awareness of patient and practice environments is an imperative for nurses in practice. Objectives: To explore nursing students' situation awareness while engaging in simulated patient deterioration scenarios. Design: The educational process of FIRST2ACT was the model for the nurse intervention. Situation awareness was measured quantitatively using the Situation Awareness Global Assessment tool. Four domains were measured: physiological perception (patient parameters), global perception (surroundings), comprehension (interpretation of information), and projection (forecasting outcomes). Settings: Clinical laboratories at each of three participating universities. Participants: Ninety-seven nursing students from three Australian universities. Methods: Between March and July 2012, students participated in three video-recorded simulation events, in which a trained actor played patient roles and groups of three students worked as teams. To measure situation awareness, following the simulation each team leader was taken to a separate room and asked to report on a question set regarding the patient's vital signs, bedside setting and medical diagnosis. Results and Conclusions: Overall, situation awareness was low (41%). Of the four domains, physiological perceptions scored the lowest (26%) and projection the highest (59%).Final year nursing students may not have well developed situation awareness skills, especially when dealing with these types of scenarios. Education providers need to consider ways to assist students to fully develop this attribute. Findings suggest that this is an aspect of undergraduate nursing education that requires significant consideration by curriculum developers.

- Description: This paper reports on the learning potential of a reflective activity undertaken by final year nursing students, in which they were asked to recount two meaningful events that occurred during their clinical placements over the duration of their 3-year nursing degree program and reflect on how these events contributed to their learning to become beginning level Registered Nurses (RNs). This descriptive qualitative study gathered narratives from 92 students as individual postings in an online forum created within the University's learning management system. An analysis of the students' reflections are the focus of this paper particularly in relation to the value of reflecting on the identified events. Four themes emerged that clearly highlight the way in which these students interpreted and learned from both positive and negative clinical experiences, their strong desire to fit into their new role and their ability to re-imagine how they might respond to clinical events when they become Registered Nurses. The findings of this study may contribute to developing nursing curricula that better prepares final year students for the realities of practice. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd.

- Description: Aim: The number of countries where nurses are allowed to prescribe has increased over the past two decades. Nursing students’ self-efficacy has the main impact on their clinical and cognitive skills. The aim of this study is to determine nursing students’ attitudes and preparedness for nurse prescribing and its relationship with their perceived self-efficacy. Design: The descriptive-correlational study Methods: This study was conducted at five Nursing and Midwifery schools of Tabriz, Ardebil, Ilam, Ramsar, and Mashhad, Iran from March to July 2018. Through random sampling 250 undergraduate nursing students from the different geographical areas of Iran were selected. The research tool consisted of three parts including demographic information, nurse prescribing questionnaire, and a questionnaire on self-efficacy in patient care. Results: Nursing students had a positive attitudes and relatively high levels of preparedness for nurse prescribing. However, near to half of the participants (48.4%) mentioned that they have not good knowledge of pharmacology. Also there was a significant positive correlation between the students’ self-efficacy and their attitudes and preparedness to nurse prescribing (p < 0.001, rs= 0.467;p = 0.00, rs= 0.633). Conclusions: Given the nursing students’ positive attitude to and their preparedness for nurse prescribing, it is possible to make them more prepared for this new role by increasing their pharmacological knowledge and improving their accountability, management, and leadership skills. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. **Please note that there are multiple authors for this article therefore only the name of the first 5 including Federation University Australia affiliate “Joanne Porter” is provided in this record**

- Description: Reflective practice is a vital component of nursing education. It allows for the integration of core theoretical knowledge and the clinical experience. Despite a small and growing body of literature exploring the nursing students’ perceptions and experiences of this process, a review of the qualitative literature has not been published. The purpose of this meta-synthesis is to examine the qualitative data of nursing students’ perceptions and experiences of reflective practice. This meta-synthesis provides a model that suggests quality reflection results in an improvement in practice. Students perceive that quality reflection occurs when all facets of this model have been met. This encompasses an understanding of knowledge including, learning and the barriers and enablers to knowledge, as well as self-discovery including, facing emotions and personal growth. Understanding these experiences and perceptions will permit further understanding of the motivations and factors that influence the quality of reflective practice. © 2020 Organization for Associate Degree Nursing

- Description: Addressing nursing shortages in rural areas remains essential, and attracting nursing graduates is one solution. However, understanding what factors are most important or prioritized among nursing students contemplating rural employment remains essential. The study sought to understand nursing student decision-making and what aspects of a rural career need to be satisfied before other factors are then considered. A cross-sectional study over three years at an Australian university was conducted. All nursing students were invited to complete a Nursing Community Apgar Questionnaire to examine their rural practice intentions. Data were analyzed using principal component analysis, and mean scores for each component were calculated and ranked. Overall, six components encompassed a total of 35 items that students felt were important to undertake rural practice after graduating. Clinical related factors were ranked the highest, followed by managerial, practical, fiscal, familial, and geographical factors. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs provided a lens to examine nursing student decision-making and guided the development of the Rural Nursing Workforce Hierarchy of Needs model. Each element of the model grouped key factors that students considered to be important in order to undertake rural employment. In culmination, these factors provide a conceptual model of the hierarchy of needs that must be met in order to contemplate a rural career. © 2021 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.

- Description: Background: Knowledge provides a foundation for safe and effective nursing practice. However, most previous studies have focused on exploring nursing students' self-reported perceptions of, or confidence in, their level of patient safety knowledge, rather than examining their actual levels of knowledge. Objective: The overarching objective of this study was to examine final year nursing students' levels of knowledge about key patient safety concepts. Design: A cross-sectional design was used for this study. Data collection was undertaken during 2018 using a web-based patient safety quiz with 45 multiple choice questions informed by the Patient Safety Competency Framework for Nursing Students. A Modified Angoff approach was used to establish a pass mark or ‘cut score’ for the quiz. Setting and participants: Nursing students enrolled in the final year of a pre-registration nursing program in Australia or New Zealand were invited to participate in the study. Results: In total, 2011 final year nursing students from 23 educational institutions completed the quiz. Mean quiz scores were 29.35/45 or 65.23% (SD 5.63). Participants achieved highest scores in the domains of person-centred care and therapeutic communication, and lowest scores for infection prevention and control and medication safety. Based on the pass mark of 67.3% determined by the Modified Angoff procedure, 44.7% of students (n = 899) demonstrated passing performance on the quiz. For eight of the institutions, less than half of their students achieved a passing mark. Conclusions: Given the pivotal role that nurses play in maintaining patient safety, the results from this quiz raise important questions about the preparation of nursing students for safe and effective clinical practice. The institutional results also suggest the need for increased curricula attention to patient safety. © 2020 Elsevier Ltd

- Description: The purpose of this article is to describe the Nominal Group Technique and its application as a consensus-generating approach in nursing research. The approach incorporates face-to-face meetings to explore opinions, generate ideas, and determine priorities. The nominal group technique process, which is based on a study designed to develop a nursing student clinical placement (clinical practicum) evaluation tool, is described. Advantages of the approach include creative face-to-face discussions with minimal resource demands. The nominal group technique is beneficial and can be used to achieve consensus in nursing research, but a lack of anonymity may preclude the process in some investigations.

- Description: Aim: To explore the impact of COVID-19 on psychosocial well-being and learning for nursing and midwifery undergraduate students in an Australian university. Background: The World Health Organization has reported a substantial psychological impact of COVID-19 on healthcare professionals to date. Evidence is lacking, however, regarding university nursing and midwifery students of the pandemic and its impact on their educational preparation and/or clinical placement during the COVID-19 pandemic. Design: Cross-sectional survey of nursing and midwifery undergraduate students enrolled in the Bachelor of Nursing suite of courses from the study institution in August- September 2020. Methods: A cross-sectional self-administered anonymous online survey was distributed to current nursing and midwifery undergraduate students. The survey included three open-ended questions; responses were thematically analysed. Results: Of 2907 students invited, 637 (22%) responded with 288 of the respondents (45%) providing a response to at least one of the three open-ended questions. Three major themes associated with the impact of the pandemic on psychosocial well-being and learning were identified: psychosocial impact of the pandemic, adjustment to new modes of teaching and learning, and concerns about course progression and career. These themes were underpinned by lack of motivation to study, feeling isolated, and experiencing stress and anxiety that impacted on students’ well-being and their ability to learn and study. Conclusions: Students were appreciative of different and flexible teaching modes that allowed them to balance their study, family, and employment responsibilities. Support from academic staff and clinical facilitators/mentors combined with clear and timely communication of risk management related to personal protective equipment (PPE) in a healthcare facility, were reported to reduce students’ stress and anxiety. Ways to support and maintain motivation among undergraduate nursing and midwifery students are needed. © 2021

- Description: Introduction: COVID-19 has not only affected the physical health of people but it has also had a major impact on their mental health. Objective: To investigate the nursing, midwifery, and operating room students’ mental health and intention to leave during COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at the nursing and midwifery school of Tabriz, Iran. Over a period of three months (February–May 2021) and through random sampling, 284 students were selected. The research tool consisted of three parts including demographic information, Depression Anxiety Stress scales, and a questionnaire on intention to leave. Results: More than 20% of the students experienced some degrees of depression, anxiety, and stress. Nearly one-third of participants mentioned a high level of intention to leave. Nursing students had a higher level of a turnover tendency than other students (p =.004). Male students and who experienced moderate to high level of depression displayed greater intention to leave (p =.005). Conclusion: Students suffered from some degrees of stress, anxiety, and depression during the COVID-19, and it strengthened the participants’ intention to leave. Relevant authorities are recommended to improve mental health of the students by providing psychological counseling sessions, reducing their direct contact with patients, and providing personal protective equipment. © The Author(s) 2022.

- Description: Objectives: To develop a contemporary student placement model to address current placement challenges, impact student learning, and alleviate supervisor burden. Methods: A modified Delphi technique was used to seek opinions, insights, and creative solutions. Results: A draft Communities of Practice placement model, based on a systematic literature review, was introduced to a heterogenous expert panel (n=12). A contemporary placement model was developed and refined via video conference and email over three rounds. Conclusions: Despite initial reluctance concerning a new model, participants became conversant with the concept of peer-to-peer learning, where incidental, albeit essential, learning and support occurs between students, which also supports supervising staff. Greater flexibly and student screening were also incorporated to enable greater learning, confidence building, and reflection. The model's success is contingent upon students working within their scope of practice and provides a contemporary approach to best responds to student, education provider, and health service needs. © 2022 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston.
Australian nursing students’ perceptions of being a nurse : a mixed methods study

- Description: Background Nursing students often enter nursing programs with idealistic, altruistic perceptions of what it means to be a nurse. Over time, however, many discover that these perceptions are naïve and unrealistic. Nursing is a demanding profession that requires knowledge, skill and emotional resilience in often demanding and challenging situations that can influence emotional intelligence. Therefore, an early and realistic understanding of professional requirements may reduce transition shock and attrition rates. Aim The aim of this thesis is to explore Bachelor of Nursing (BN) students’ perceptions of being a nurse in Australia. Methods This study used an explanatory sequential mixed methods design. The 34-item Perceptions of a Registered Nurse (PRN) survey tool was developed using a Nominal Group Technique and validated with a sample of 797 participants across three universities and states. Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis was incorporated as applicable. In addition, online semi-structured interviews with 23 nursing students (n = 23) explored their perceptions of a nurse in detail, with a thematic analysis of outcomes. Results Demographic variables influenced perceptions. - Description: Background: Being a nursing student can be a stressful experience, faced with considerable academic and clinical demands. It has been suggested that the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) may have further exacerbated the pressure nursing students face. It has been posited that resilience, a complex psychological concept, may help nursing students overcome stressful situations. Aims: The aim of this scoping review was to examine the relationship between resilience and stress in nursing students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Relevant publications were identified by a comprehensive search of the literature from January 2019 to September 2022 to capture relevant publications during the COVID-19 global pandemic period from the following databases: CINAHL, Medline Complete, APA PsycInfo, Ovid EmCare and Web of Science. Fifteen studies met our inclusion criteria and were included in the review using Arskey & O'Malley’s (2005) methodological framework for scoping reviews. Results: Our findings suggest that nursing students from all around the world have experienced high levels of stress during the COVID-19 pandemic. Almost unanimously, resilience was identified as a key protective factor against stress and the development of psychological morbidity. Those nursing students with higher levels of resilience were deemed more likely to stay on track with their studies, despite COVID-related challenges. Conclusion: In conclusion, this scoping review adds to the well-established argument to incorporate resilience-building activities in undergraduate nursing curricula. Developing levels of resilience has the potential to empower nursing students for academic and clinical success, whilst facing the challenges of an ever-changing world. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd

- Description: Objectives: To examine changes in grit and psychological capital among nursing students prior to, during the height of the pandemic, and more than 12 months after the initial pandemic announcement. Methods: A cross-sectional study design addressed the aim of the study. Nursing students undertaking a three-year baccalaureate degree between 2019 and 2021 were included. Results: Mean grit levels among the n=818 unique student participants were significantly lower in 2020 than in 2019 and 2021; however, no significant difference was detected for psychological capital over the same period. Conclusions: Although normative day-to-day challenges may aid grit development, a major event has a negative impact yet has a buffering effect of negative life events at the time of a crisis. The study further placates that psychological capital remains malleable and open to change at the time of a crisis and may be an essential mechanism to mediate grit and has the capacity to influence student performance over time. It remains essential to develop grit through the mediating elements of psychological capital to enable nursing student to undertake academic studies, particularly in the event of major challenges, such approaches may further enable students' endurance to withstand major crises as they enter the workforce. © 2023 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston.
Exploration of nursing degree students’ content expectations of a dedicated Indigenous health unit

- Description: Mandatory Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health units are included in all nursing education programmes in Australia to improve students’ knowledge, skills and attitudes towards Indigenous people in order to help address health inequities. This research explores content expectations of nursing students required to undertake Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health studies as part of a Bachelor of Nursing Degree at a rural university campus. A cross-sectional survey was undertaken to examine students’ opinions of course content of an Aboriginal health and wellbeing unit. Two hundred and ninety-four students across the three years of the degree were asked to complete the anonymous survey. Two hundred and forty-six students (83.6%) completed the survey. One hundred and thirty-nine students had completed, and 107 students were yet to undertake the unit. Qualitative content analysis of an open-ended survey question was used to interrogate the data. Four themes emerged from the data: cultural competence, disease implications and management, nursing care and other issues. Content expectations were consistent for students who were yet to undertake (pre) or had completed (post) the unit. Content expectations included Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture (pre 30.4%–post 29.8%), Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health issues (pre 20.0%–post 23.7%) and understanding nursing care related issues (pre 15.7%–post 17.1%). Data findings were significant for enhancing the current unit. Students express the need for a safe learning environment in which to challenge beliefs and opinions. Course facilitators need to be sensitive to student populations and include content relevant to the programme being studied. Cultural immersion experiences may improve confidence in nursing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. © 2015 Australian College of Nursing Ltd
