- Description: A challenging aspect of managing the development of complex projects is the notion of design iteration or rework. Traditional project management tools such as program evaluation and review technique (PERT), critical path method (CPM), and Gantt chart allow the modelling of sequential and parallel processes in projects, but they fail to address interdependency of feedback and iteration. Design structure matrix (DSM) is a new approach to project management, used to represent, analyse dependencies among tasks and show the order in which tasks are performed. In this paper, a case of the petroleum oil field development project is demonstrated. The project duration of the petroleum oil field development project is reduced significantly by applying the DSM method.

- Description: This paper addresses the problem of finding the optimal robot move cycle to minimise the cycle time of two-machine cells. The earlier robot's function was mainly moving parts between machines in a manufacturing process. We lift this assumption on robot tasks and assumed a special robot, namely multi-function, which performs a unique operation in transit. This robot starts performing this operation after unloading a part from input buffer and finishes it before loading the part to the output buffer. The processing mode on robot is “stop resume”. Thus, regardless of the gap interrupts during the operation, the robot continues processing on part when it is reloaded to the robot without any loss in time. The focus of this study is on one-unit cycles since they are very popular in industry. The cycle time of two possible one-unit cycles is obtained, and the optimality condition of them is determined.

- Description: Automated material handling systems are usually characterised by robotic cells that result in the improvement of the production rate. The main purpose of this research is to study the scheduling of a rotationally arranged robotic cell with the multi-function robot (MFR). This special class of industrial robot is able not only to transfer the part between two adjacent processing stages but also to perform a special operation in transit. Considering MFR for material handling and operation, the objective function of the research here is the maximisation of production rate, or equivalently the minimization of the steady-state cycle time for identical part production. This problem is modelled as a travelling salesman problem to give computational benefits with respect to the existing solution methods. Then, the lower bound for the cycle time is deduced in order to measure the productivity gain of two practical production permutations, namely uphill and downhill permutations. As a design problem, a preliminary analysis initially identifies the regions where the productivity gain of a regular multi-function robotic cell is more than that of the corresponding single-function robotic cell for both small- and large-scale cells. The conclusion shows the suggested topics for future research.

- Description: This study focuses on cost and schedule issues of international development (ID) projects. Through empirical analysis we examine ID project cost and schedule performance and the main reasons for poor project outcome. We look at 100 projects that are sponsored by the Asian Development Bank and hosted by several Asian countries. The study identifies that most late projects experience cost underrun – an unusual cost and schedule variation relation in projects. Further we identify the root causes of project delay and cost underrun. Research findings will benefit ID project professionals, organizations and the ID project body of knowledge. The study can be extended to analyse other developing country projects sponsored by different donors.

- Description: In this paper, ways of improving planning, execution and management of projects using Numerical Design Structure Matrix (NDSM) method are presented to address interdependency of feedback and iteration, which is common in engineering projects management. The NDSM is an alternative approach to traditional project management tools such as Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT), Critical Path Method (CPM), and Gantt chart that can only allow the modelling of sequential and parallel processes in projects. As a case study, the model is tested on a set of tasks in a complex petroleum oil field development project, where task sensitivity and information variability attributes are derived. By applying the NDSM method, project duration is optimized and hence total cost of the project is reduced significantly.

- Description: Multistage Interconnection Networks (MINs) are network systems providing fast and efficient communications at a reasonable cost. A gamma network is a specific class of MINs, which provides redundant paths in the system. In a gamma network, information from source nodes is transmitted through a specific set of routes to destination nodes. Reliability of an MIN is used as a measure of system’s ability to transform information from input to output devices. Due to the complexity of network configuration and availability of redundant paths, reliability bounds to estimate the exact reliability of a gamma network is proposed. A numerical example of an 8 × 8 gamma network is presented to demonstrate the accuracy of the reliability bounds. When the lower bound reliability provides sufficient assurance that the system will be operational at some specified time and closely approximates the exact reliability, then no further effort for obtaining the exact reliability expression is necessary.

- Description: Gamma Interconnection Network (GIN) is a type of Multistage Interconnection Network (MIN) that consists of layers of switching elements connected together in a predefined topology providing the connectivity between the set of processors and the set of memory modules. GIN is constructed by 1×3, 3×3 and 3×1 switching elements. In this paper, network reliability of four other different types of Gamma hybrid networks namely Monogamma Interconnection Network (MGIN), Reliable Gamma Interconnection Network (REGIN), Cyclic Gamma Interconnection Network (CGIN) and E×tra Stage Gamma Network (ESGN) are analyzed. The results from the proposed simulation method show that the ESGN, COIN and REGIN e×hibit high network reliability performance. This is subsequently followed by the MGIN, with a marginal network reliability improvement compared to the GIN. It is also shown that the reliability model used for simulation closely appro×imates the e×act network reliability of MGIN, COIN, and REGIN

- Description: Purpose – Multistage Interconnection Networks (MINs) are a class of network systems designed to improve communication in large-scale parallel processing systems. These networks facilitate the communications to perform a single overall task in a parallel processing system consisting of a large number of processors that are working together. The purpose of this paper is to discuss two types of MINs: gamma networks and extra-stage gamma networks. It is shown that a specific modification in the structure of a standard gamma network will add multiple paths from a specific source to a specific destination. Design/methodology/approach – The terminal reliability of these networks are evaluated and analyzed in terms of the number of their paths connecting a source i, i ¼ 1, 2, ... , N to any terminal. Numerical examples are also given to demonstrate each network’s performance. Findings – In this paper, terminal reliability as a function of the reliability of a switching element of MINs is analyzed. Terminal reliability, generally used as a measure of robustness of a MIN, is the probability of existence of at least one fault free path between a designated pair of input (s) and output (t) terminals. The fault-tolerance and terminal reliability capabilities as well as the reliability of these networks are evaluated. It is observed that the additional stage provides more redundant paths in the networks. Therefore, an additional stage leads to extra paths and improves the system’s fault tolerance. It has been shown that in a Shuffle-Exchange Network Systems, an addition of an extra stage leads to higher terminal reliability of that network. However, the additional stage does not necessarily improve the terminal reliability of the gamma network. The additional stage could add to the switch complexity and increase the probability of a path failure as well. Therefore, the extra-stage gamma network has multiple paths in every source-destination pair including the case when the tag value is 0, that is, when (s ¼ t).

- Description: An interconnection network system consists of layers of switching elements connected together in a predefined topology providing the connectivity between the set of processors and the set of memory modules. Performance analysis of a network system is important as it determines the usability and the efficiency of the network to provide services. A shuffle-exchange network (SEN), a specific type of Multistage Interconnection Network (MIN) that consists of 2x2 switching elements, has been widely considered as a practical interconnection system. This paper presents a network reliability model based on a minimum cut set method for SEN systems. A general equation for large-scale network reliability is derived subsequently to reduce the complexity of the reliability analysis for the interconnection network system. - Description: This paper investigates the scheduling of a rotationally arranged robotic cell with the Multi-Function Robot (MFR). The earlier known robotic study in this area assumed that the robot only moves the part between machines. We lift this assumption on robot tasks and assumed a special class of robots which is also able to perform a special operation in transit. The aim is to find a minimum cycle time for identical part production. Considering additive and constant travel-time, the distance between any two machines is varying or constant based on the robot acceleration/deceleration for incompact and compact cells. The lower bound of the cycle time is deduced to evaluate the optimality of two practical permutations namely uphill and downhill. It also identifies the regions where using a Multi-Function Robotic Cell (MFRC) is more economical than a Single-Function Robotic Cell (SFRC).

- Description: Advantages of pre-cast technology in the construction of commercial, residential and institutional buildings are well documented in literature. However, the acceptance of this technology in Malaysia is relatively low with few projects being constructed with pre-cast components. The objectives of this paper are to measure labor productivity in construction, to examine productivity indicators between pre-cast and conventional Cast-In-Situ (CIS) methods, and to explore areas of improvements to promote adoption of precast technology in Malaysia. Data on construction labor productivity are collected using questionnaires, interviews, and observations at the construction sites. Based on statistical analysis performed in this paper, it is concluded that pre-cast method is better than conventional CIS method in terms of construction labor productivity, time to complete a project, variability of construction activities, and loss of efficiency during the construction process. Baseline productivity, unit rates for pre-cast components and correlation of the productivity factors to construction labor productivity are presented as well.

- Description: Shuffle-exchange networks (SENs) have been widely considered as practical interconnection systems due to their size of its switching elements (SEs) and uncomplicated configuration. SEN is a network among a large class of topologically equivalent multistage interconnection networks (MINs) that includes omega, indirect binary n-cube, baseline, and generalized cube. In this paper, SEN with additional stages that provide more redundant paths are analyzed. A common network topology with a 2×2 basic building block in a SEN and its variants in terms of extra-stages is investigated. As an illustration, three types of SENs are compared: SEN, SEN with an additional stage (SEN+), and SEN with two additional stages (SEN+2). Finally, three measures of reliability: terminal, broadcast, and network reliability for the three SEN systems are analyzed.
