- Description: This study explored the value of Second Life as a clinical simulation platform for healthcare students. Participants were exposed to the Critical Life simulation and worked in teams within the simulation. Pre- and post-surveys and interviews were used to gauge responses to participation, level of use of online tools and gaming, and input about the experience of using the simulation. The main findings from the study were that participants had positive and realistic experiences using Critical Life as a collaborative learning tool; participants agreed that Critical Life would assist them in developing technical and non-technical skills; participants were not deterred by the technology and perceived they would use it in their own time; and participants agreed that the simulation was able to incorporate effective learning strategies that may improve clinical judgment. Interviews revealed that the participants enjoyed working in virtual teams suggesting that in healthcare education, virtual simulations have potential for use across multiple campuses and universities

- Description: Management intelligent systems (MIS) is a new paradigm integrating management with intelligent systems. What are the core components of MIS? What are intelligent systems for management? How can management integrate with intelligent systems? All these questions remain open in an MIS context. This article addresses these issues by examining MIS from a strategic perspective. More specifically, this article first examines management in information systems, management for intelligent systems and intelligent systems for management. Then this article provides a strategic model for MIS encompassing core components of MIS, through integrating main management functions with intelligent systems taking into account decision making of managers in organizations. The approach proposed in this article will facilitate the research and development of MIS, management and intelligent systems and information systems. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

- Description: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a silent, deadly killer. CKD causes your kidneys to become damaged and can no longer clean your blood. As a result, your body becomes overloaded with fluid, and you suffer from headaches, migraines, nausea, vomiting, and most days, it feels like someone punched you in the back, amongst other symptoms. Like many other Australians, it was too late when I was diagnosed with CKD. My kidney function had reduced to 18%. Despite following a strict diet and medication schedule, within 2 years of diagnosis, my kidney function reduced to less than 5%, and I became a haemodialysis patient. I have survived this time by using a positive mindset and regular meditation. This chapter is my story of CKD from a young child to the current day and how becoming a haemodialysis patient inspired me to become a CKD researcher with lived experience.
