- Description: Most studies of rock slope failures on open–pit mines have considered either toppling or circular failure stability analysis. By comparison, complex circular–toppling failure has received much less attention in the published literature. This paper presents a study using a range of methods to investigate a failure that occurred in July 2008 in Handlebar Hill, an open–pit base metal mine, near Mt Isa, Australia. Circular failure is the typical slope failure mechanism in slopes with low–strength rocks, although direct/flexural toppling of jointed columns can also occur. The study reviews circular–toppling failure mechanisms in the context of the local geotechnical and geo–hydrological conditions, which include the interaction between fault contacts and the existing deformed rocks. General limit equilibrium methods are used to evaluate the sensitivity of slope models to rock strength parameters and the trigger mechanisms. Finite element methods are used to assess the failure mechanisms and slope displacement, and a kinematic approach is used to evaluate structurally controlled slope instability mechanisms. The results demonstrate that the most credible failure mechanism was shearing along a circular path through the upper weaker rocks (leached Magazine Shale) that in turn initiated secondary block toppling, and the progressive nature of the slope failure mechanism. The use of conventional and numerical techniques for back–analysis of the combined circular–toppling failure provided key insights into the failure mechanisms and factors controlling slope instability. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

- Description: Rock Bridge fracturing and coalescence with pre-existing discontinuities in rock mass due to the initiation, propagation and interaction of these fractures refers to instability mode of step-path failure. Step-path failure is a typical type of instable mode of man-made and natural rock slopes. The continuum finite element method was applied to work on deeper insight into the propagation of tensile cracks which developing in the intact rock bridges that can finally coalesce to form step-path failure. In this paper, based on the intact rock fracturing hypothesis, two selected slope simulations from the Handlebar Hill open - pit mine near Mt. Isa in Queensland, Australia, modeled the process of fracturing and step-path failure through different pre-existing discontinuities. The empirical models of Bobet and Einstein (1998) and the progressively cracks development are observed within crack initiation, propagation and coalescence in the intact rock bridges. Proposed slope models of the mine included four joint-net distributions through the rock masses considering the geometry of structures (dip angles, spacing, lengths and orientation) illustrated the extension cracks from the flaw tips and propagated to the slope surface. Modes of intact rock bridges fracturing (shear, tensile and a combination of shear and tensile) have been observed. Tensile fracture is usually generated when the rock bridge angle is sub-vertical. Shear fracture can be initiated in less steep rock bridge angles. A combination of shear and tensile failure is normally generated in slopes with. Slope with explicit large-scale structures of steeper dip angles increased the yielding. Larger structures show much higher potential for yielding as the tensile stresses increasing. Major joint plane spacing resulted in less potential for relative deformations between neighboring structures and consequently reduced slope instability. The changes of length and spacing have more influence on slope stability than a change in the dip angle of the structures. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

- Description: Feeding a growing global population requires improving agricultural production in the face of multidimensional challenges; and digital agriculture is increasingly seen as a strategy for better decision making. Agriculture and agricultural supply chains are increasingly reliant on data, including its access and provision from the farm to the consumer. Far-reaching data provision inevitably needs the adoption of FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) that offer data originators and depository custodians with a set of guidelines to safeguard a progressive data availability and reusability. Through a systematic literature review it is apparent that although FAIR data principles can play a key role in achieving sustainable agricultural operational and business performance, there are few published studies on how they have been adopted and used. The investigation examines: (1) how FAIR data assimilate with the sustainability framework; and (2) whether the use of FAIR data by the agriculture industry, has an impact on agricultural performance. The work identifies a social science research gap and suggests a method to guide agriculture practitioners in identifying the specific barriers in making their data FAIR. By troubleshooting the barriers, the value propositions of adopting FAIR data in agriculture can be better understood and addressed. © 2022 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.

- Description: Feeding the growing global population while improving the Earth’s economic, environmental, and social values is a challenge recognised in both the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Sustaining global agricultural performance requires regular revision of current farming models, attitudes, and practices. In systematically reviewing the international literature through the lens of the sustainability framework, this paper specifically identifies precision conservation agriculture (PCA), digital agriculture (DA), and resilient agriculture (RA) practices as being of value in meeting future challenges. Each of these adaptations carries significantly positive relationships with sustaining agricultural performance, as well as positively mediating and/or moderating each other. While it is clear from the literature that adopting PCA, DA, and RA would substantially improve the sustainability of agricultural performance, the uptake of these adaptations generally lags. More in-depth social science research is required to understand the value propositions that would encourage uptake of these adaptations and the barriers that prevent them. Recommendations are made to explore the specific knowledge gap that needs to be understood to motivate agriculture practitioners to adopt these changes in practice. © 2022 by the authors. - Description: Rockfalls are a major safety hazard in open cut mines, particularly in large-scale deep pits. The geotechnical design relies on in-situ, site-specific, rock slope data to predict the trajectories and velocities of rockfalls that present a residual hazard in the mines. This paper presents slope stability analyses using both static general limit equilibrium methods and finite element stress analyses to estimate unstable areas and slope displacements in the mid-west slope at Glencore Zinc's Handlebar Hill Open Cut mine at Mt. Isa, Queensland, Australia. A conventional program -RocFall- was used for the slope rockfall risk assessment. Results indicate the possible slope benches involved in the initiation of rockfalls, and the maximum run-out distance, which could be defined as the pit's hazardous zone. A rockfall restraining system to absorb the impact energy of boulders and prevent them further falling was also modelled. © 2015, International Journal of GEOMATE.

- Description: A complete kinematic analysis was conducted for the west slope at the Handlebar Hill mine using the Rocscience/Dips 6.0 software. The west slope was divided into three zones: W1 (south-west), W2 (mid-west) and W3 (north-west), which were then subdivided into nine small elements to increase the certainty of parameters. This enabled the analysis to define the potential kinematics of motions of critical structures. Small scale joints, bedding, faults, shears along the discontinuities were plotted and the data were analysed systematically. The results indicated that the potential toppling mode created by discontinuities can lead to direct/flexural toppling failure. The kinematic feasibility also revealed that the intersections of the discontinuities within the critical zone can structurally control the wedge planar failure modes. The results will assist the mine geotechnical engineers to understand the potential slope failure mechanisms and their locations. © 2016, International Journal of GEOMATE.

- Description: The aim of the present study was to investigate the factors relating to non-adherence to warning signs about falling rocks from coastal cliff faces. Face-to-face interviews (n=62) in a naturalistic setting (in the vicinity of a high-risk rockfall area) were conducted to investigate attention to and comprehension of warning signs, as well as beliefs relating to non-adherence of the signage. It was found that, while most participants could correctly identify the danger in the area and had noticed the warning signage, less than half of the participants could correctly interpret the signage. The perception of danger did not differ significantly between the participants who had, or had not, entered the high-risk zone. Differences in knowledge and beliefs between local residents and visitors to the area were identified. It was concluded that the warning signs did not provide enough detail for people to make informed decisions about safe behaviours. Comprehension of the signage may have been hampered by a lack of prior-knowledge of the particular risk, a failure to think carefully about the situation (i.e. low-effort processing), and the pictorial representation on the signs misleading the participants as to the true danger. © 2012 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

- Description: Livestock industries are increasingly embracing precision farming and decision support tools. As a result, sensors, weather stations, individual animal tracking, feed monitoring and other sources create large data volumes, much of which is used only for a single purpose. There are unrealised potential benefits of making on farm data interoperable and accessible and federating it with public data sources. We reviewed recent literature on precision livestock farming (PLF) technologies in relation to the use of public data, open standards and interoperability. Livestock farms produce rising volumes of disparate private datasets, reflecting a variety of information needs and technological opportunities, but typically lacking interoperable formats and metadata. These as well as large amounts of accessible public datasets are currently underutilised in decision support tools. Tools that demonstrate the use of interoperable standards and bring together public and private data for decision support can enhance the value proposition and help lower barriers to the sharing and re-use of data. This review of interoperable standards in extensive livestock farming systems concludes that there is a need for not only a new type of decision support tool, but also a consensus on data exchange standards to prove the value of shared data at farm scale (commercial benefit) and a regional scale (public good). © 2018

- Description: The global adoption of the FAIR principles for scientific data: findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable, has been relatively slow in agriculture, compared to other disciplines. A recent review of the literature showed that the use of precision farming technologies and the development and adoption of open data standards was particularly low in extensive livestock farming. However, a plethora of public datasets exist that have the potential to be used to inform precision farming decision tools. Using extensive livestock farming in Australia as example, we investigate the quantity and quality of datasets available via a systematic dataset review. This systematic review of datasets begins with a search of open data catalogues and querying these to find datasets. Software scripts are developed and used to query the Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) of many of the large data catalogues in Australia, while catalogues without public APIs are queried manually via available web portals. Following the systematic search, a combined list of all datasets is collated and tested for FAIRness and other quality metrics. The contribution of this work is the resulting overview of the state of open datasets within the livestock farming domain on the one hand, but also the development of a systematic dataset search strategy, reusable methods and software scripts. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.

- Description: GWML2 is an international standard for the online exchange of groundwater data that addresses the problem of data heterogeneity. This problem makes groundwater data hard to find and use because the data are diversely structured and fragmented into numerous data silos. Overcoming data heterogeneity requires a common data format; however, until the development of GWML2, an appropriate international standard has been lacking. GWML2 represents key hydrogeological entities such as aquifers and water wells, as well as related measurements and groundwater flows. It is developed and tested by an international consortium of groundwater data providers from North America, Europe, and Australasia, and facilitates many forms of data exchange, information representation, and the development of online web portals and tools. © 2018, The Author(s).

- Description: The explosive growth of geospatial data has stimulated the development of many standards aimed at decreasing data heterogeneity and enhancing data use. Well-established design methods for geospatial data standards typically involve the creation of two schemas for data structure, designated here as logical and physical, but this can lead to conceptual inconsistencies and modelling inefficiencies. In this paper we describe a design method that overcomes these issues by incorporating an additional schema – the conceptual schema – and demonstrate its application to the design of GroundWaterML2 (GWML2), a new international standard for groundwater data. Results include not only a new data standard, robustly constructed and tested, but also an enhanced method for geospatial data standard design.

Note that bore records may be duplicated in the databases or between the databases, the locations may be wrong, data may be missing and sometimes data may be wrong. For this reason, the emphasis in the data collection has been to refer each record to its original source and link to the original source material where available. Over time it is proposed to edit each individual bore in the database to verify and clean the data where possible. As a general rule, bores in the State Observation Bore network (SOBN) within the WMIS, groundwater research bores managed by the University and the Mineral Springs have the most complete and accurate data. - Description: CONTEXT: Continued increases in global population and rising living standards in many countries are driving a surge in demand for energy and protein-rich foods. Wheat, barley, and canola are important crops that are grown and traded globally. However, climate change, geopolitical tensions and competition from other crops threaten the ability to satisfy global demand. Accurate predictions of crop production and its spatial variation can play a significant role in their reliable and efficient production, marketing, and distribution. OBJECTIVE: This review examined recently published models and data used to predict wheat, barley, and canola yield to identify which factors produced the best yield predictions. METHODS: A literature search was conducted across the Scopus, EBSCOhost and Web of Science databases over seven years between 2015 and 2021. Data extracted from the papers identified by the literature search were investigated using graphical and quantitative analytical techniques to determine if the type of algorithm, input data, prediction timing, output scale or extent and climate variability both in isolation and in combination affected the model's predictive ability. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: The literature search produced 11, 908 results which was reduced to 118 papers after applying the review criteria (peer reviewed papers focussed on models predicting yield at greater than plot scale across extensive areas using accessible data). China produced almost one third of all yield prediction models over the study period and 87% of models were used to predict wheat yield. Statistical models were the most common algorithm in most regions and in total. However, there was a surge in machine learning models after 2018. They were the most common model from 2019 to 2021, with one third developed in China. The review concluded that only the choice of modelling technique and the input data had a significant effect on model performance with the machine learning techniques Random Forest, Boosting algorithms and Deep Learning models as well as process-based Light Use Efficiency models that used a combination of remotely sensed and agrometeorological data performing best. SIGNIFICANCE: The review showed that matching the model to the available data could improve the ability to predict wheat, barley or canola yield. The use of quantitative statistical techniques in this review, should give modellers trying to predict wheat, barley or canola yield more confidence in matching their approach to the available data than previous reviews that relied on visual interpretation of data. © 2023 The Authors

- Description: The importance of transience in the management of hydrogeologic systems is often uncertain. We propose a clear framework for determining the likely importance of transient behavior in groundwater systems in a management context. The framework incorporates information about aquifer hydraulics, hydrological drivers, and time scale of management. It is widely recognized that aquifers respond on different timescales to hydrological change and that hydrological drivers themselves, such as climate, are not stationary in time. We propose that in order to assess whether transient behavior is likely to be of practical importance, three factors need to be examined simultaneously: (1) aquifer response time, which can be expressed in terms of the response to a step hydrological change (τstep) or periodic change (τcycle); (2) temporal variation of the dominant hydrological drivers, such as dominant climatic systems in a region; (3) the management timescale and spatial scale of interest. Graphical tools have been developed to examine these factors in conjunction, and assess how important transient behavior is likely to be in response to particular hydrological drivers, and thus which drivers are most likely to induce transience in a specified management timeframe. The method is demonstrated using two case studies; a local system that responds rapidly and is managed on yearly to decadal timeframes and a regional system that exhibits highly delayed responses and was until recently being assessed as a high level nuclear waste repository site. Any practical groundwater resource problem can easily be examined using the proposed framework.

- Description: In keeping with the standard scientific methods, investigations of salinity processes focus on the collection and interpretation of contemporary scientific data. However, using multiple lines of evidence from non-hydrogeologic sources such as geomorphic, archaeological and historical records can substantially add value to the scientific investigations. By using such evidence, the validity of the assumptions about salinity processes in Australian landscapes is challenged, especially the assumption that the clearing of native vegetation has resulted in rising saline groundwater in all landscapes. In the Corangamite region of south-west Victoria, salinity has been an episodic feature of the landscapes throughout the Quaternary and was present at the time of the Aboriginal inhabitants and the first pastoral settlement by Europeans. Although surface-water salinity has increased in some waterways and the area of salinised land has expanded in some landscapes, there is no recorded evidence found which supports significant rises in groundwater following widespread land-use change. In many areas, salinity is an inherent component of the region's landscapes, and sustains world-class environmental assets that require appropriate salinity levels for their ecological health. Managing salinity requires understanding the specific salinity processes in each landscape. © Springer-Verlag 2008.

- Description: The Corangamite region in southwest Victoria, Australia is subject to a variety of geohazards, among which landslides and erosion have the most significant impact. Over the past fifty years, landslides have resulted in loss of life and many millions of dollars damage to municipal infrastructure and development. Soil erosion by water and wind has also impacted on the region's waterways and environment, threatening a diverse range of assets from urban water quality to Ramsar-listed wetlands. More assets are placed at risk each year, as the increasing regional population results in an acceleration of anthropogenic modifications to landscapes. A comprehensive GIS database was initiated by assembling all publicly available previous databases and reports documenting landslides and erosion in the 1,340 km2 region. New data were added by mapping occurrences which were visible on high-resolution ortho-corrected aerial photographs. The field-checking of the occurrences was assisted by the participation of the local community, municipal officers and catchment management coordinators. At present 2163 landslides and 2380 erosion sites have been identified, mapped and referenced in the database. It is believed that thousands more instances exist, but these cannot be identified at the aerial photo scale, or are obscured by dense vegetation. A spatial analysis has been undertaken to identify landscape parameters which correlate with the occurrences. Historical aerial photography was used in selected locations to identify the rates of erosion and landslide events. The inventory has been used to estimate the economic, social and environmental costs of landslides and soil erosion within the region, using documented instances of damage and the costs of remediation. Combined with the value of the assets and elements at risk, the potential likelihood of occurrence and associated consequences, these estimates are used to develop a strategy for the investment of public funds in remediation.
