- Description: Inverse design techniques in the area of fluid mechanics are normally conducted for continuous flow turbomachines rather than positive displacement devices. However, the work in this article is concerned with a class of rotary positive displacement device referred to as the limaçon-to-limaçon machine. The rotors and housings of these machines are manufactured of limaçon profiles, and are likely to suffer from interference if the rotors are not carefully profiled. Published literature indicates that solutions proposed to tackle the interference problem in these machines will adversely affect their efficiency figures. This notion motivated the work presented in this article, which first introduces the relevant mathematical models of the limaçon-to-limaçon machine and then uses these models to construct an inverse geometric design problem formulation. The proposed model has been coded in a computer program that utilises a Marquardt-Levenberg technique to converge to the required geometric parameters. Case studies are presented at the end of the article to verify the validity of the proposed inverse design model.

- Description: Sustainable manufacturing assessment is meant to ensure that products are manufactured such that negative environmental impacts are reduced by conserving energy and managing the use of natural resources as well as ensuring economical soundness for the process. The main objective of this work is to introduce sustainable development methodology/models for manufacturing processes. For this purpose, the paper utilizes background data, develops a computer model and presents detailed case studies. This paper will identify and adopt key performance indicators (KPIs) and utilize these to assess the sustainability of extrusion process and their designs. Different manufacturing parameters such as material types, product specifications and manufacturing tools are considered in the process of measuring sustainability. The proposed computer model is verified with data obtain from actual aluminium extrusion plants.

- Description: This paper outlines the necessity and suitability of in-line inspection (ILI) using intelligent pigging for Corrosion Resistant Alloy (CRA) subsea clad pipelines through an incident that occurred during a baseline survey performed on a 20-inch y CRA clad pipeline of 2.7 km long. In this incident, an ultrasonic (UT) intelligent pigging tool was impacted and resulted in damage to the pipeline's clad layer. This damage was due to the collosion of the sealing pigs with the rear of the UT intelligent pigging tool, resulting in the UT intelligent pigging tool to get stuck and stop at the end of the pipeline. Pressure surges were used to dislodge the UT intelligent pigging tool, but caused the UT pig to be crashed into the pig receiver, resulting in severe damage to the UT pigging tool. The analysis of the metal swarf recovered from the pig receiver revealed that the damage was limited to the pipeline's clad layer. It was also revealed that a bypass has occurred to the sealing pigs causing damage to the sensor carriers of the intelligent pigging tool.
