This essay examines the way in which, after establishing a broad literary and journalistic reputation in both England and Australia, Adams adopted a split writing position in Songs of the Army of the Night. Comprising mostly ballads in the style of Chartist protest poetry, the Songs are intertextually determined; to some extent they have a generic life of their own. Yet in adopting the form of popular verse, using vernacular forms and diction, Adams nonetheless constructs a persona that is consistent with much of his more "literary" writing. Songs of the Army of the Night does more than demonstrate conflict in Adams' work between the claims of "art" and "life," between his upper middle-class cultural affiliations and working-class political sympathies. Despite this element of conflict, the configuration of speaking positions is not dialectic, but dialogic in the Bakhtinian sense. In this paper we propose a framework based on argumentation that can be used to support deliberative discourse on line. Online communities have several distinct advantages as very open forums but they also have some deep disadvantages. We argue that the proposed framework and web application GAAMtalk permits and encourages the positive elements of online deliberation that will enhance discussions.

This thesis presents the Leigh community’s view of the impact of Hayden College on Leigh. The study establishes ‘community’ as the key aspect of this atypical school-community partnership in the context of research which shows that effective school-community partnerships are socially and economically beneficial for rural communities. The research question addresses the relationship between a particular college and a specific community. Hayden College was attracted to life in Leigh as a source of learning for its students and to community life in Leigh in particular. The research demonstrates that the school’s vision for its Leigh campus was one based on use of the town environs and interaction with the local people, and that the overarching concept of a community as a classroom entailed Hayden College becoming part of the Leigh community. The nature and quality of the relationship is explored by contrasting the school’s vision with the community’s view of Hayden’s membership of the Leigh community. Inquiry into the idea of a community as a classroom was approached by studying ‘community’ as an ideal concept. The thesis argues that the Hayden in Leigh development is a coincidence of educational and social ideals, clarifying what it means to be part of a community using conceptual analysis of qualitative data collected from the field. The theoretical stance and empirical material in this research show the way in which the power of the concept of community resides at the ideal level. The research finds that the nature of this school-community partnership is characterized by learning exchange and small town renewal but that a threat to the quality of the relationship between college and community is contained in disparate understandings of what constitutes community life. The implications of these findings for the post-Hayden Leigh community and rural schools and communities more generally are that the association of curriculum objectives with community development objectives depends on a healthy reciprocal relationship.

In the fast moving undergraduate student world the expectations we place upon nursing students are considerable. Typically they experience high class-contact hours in addition to their clinical placements. Compounding the problem, undergraduate nursing students have diverse mathematical backgrounds and seldom perceive statistics as being relevant for them. Given these constraints we have adopted the relatively modest aim of producing informed and discriminating consumers of statistics and research, rather than skilled statistical practitioners or researchers. With a focus on computer output rather than by-hand calculations, we have made use of strategic examples, appropriate journal articles and an historical hypothetical. This approach has both relieved the anxiety and distraction associated with calculations and increased students’ engagement in the learning process.

Long-term waterlogging of Eucalyptus victrix seedlings significantly increases seedling stem diameter. Flooding reduces photosynthesis, transpiration and stomatal conductance. Flooding does not increase shoot fresh or dry weight of 4-, 8- or 17- week old seedlings. Leaf emergence may be stimulated for flooded seedlings compared with unflooded seedlings. Root dry weight is not significantly greater for 17- week old flooded plants than 13- week old seedlings. We suggest that maintenance of a high root/shoot ratio is a drought adaptation. Furthermore, a comparative study of flood tolerance in semi-arid eucalypt species suggests that those species intolerant of flooding seldom express morphological adaptations and fail to recover from physiological damage. Flooding significantly reduced the transpiration rate and stomatal conduct of all three species. Diurnal transpiration, stomatal conductance and leaf water potential of E. terminalis and E. leucophloia were significantly different between treatment (flooding) and control seedlings.

Phenological observations of eucalypts (Myrtaceae) were undertaken in four Australian states (New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, and Western Australia) from the late 1920s until the early 1980s, by the respective State Forest Commissions. Unfortunately, few records have survived. For Victoria, surviving records encompass 42 forest districts, covering from less than 2 years to 42 years, and approximately 50 species. This paper concentrates on the flowering of four competing species (Eucalyptus leucoxylon, E. microcarpa, E. polyanthemos, and E. tricarpa) over 23 years (1940-62) from Maryborough, Victoria, recorded on a monthly basis by one observer over the period. This study represents one of the first attempts to utilize Australian phenological data to detect responses to climate change. There were no significant trends (P = 0.05) over time in the mean flowering commencement date. Forward stepwise regression found a significant relationship between temperature and flowering commencement in two species (E. leucoxylon: R-2 = 0.42, P < 0.01; E. polyanthemos: R-2 = 0.47, P = 0.02). Rainfall also had a significant influence on flowering commencement in E. tricarpa (R-2 = 0.60, P < 0.01), E. leucoxylon (R-2 = 0.43, P = 0.02) and E. polyanthemos (R-2 = 0.24, P < 0.01). The combination of temperature and rainfall (with temperature exerting the greatest influence), however, was significant for all species and had the most explanatory power (ranging from R-2 = 0.74 to 0.85, P < 0.01). Overall, in response to predicted increases in temperature and summer rainfall, E. leucoxylon and E. tricarpa would commence flowering later.
