- Abstract
- The term "post democracy" (Crouch, 2000, 2004) describes democratic societies that have political policy driven by small elites with non-popular agenda. Crouch identifies a range of reasons, including lack of shared goals, globalisation, lack of distinction between political parties, blurring of public and private sectors and privatization. The exercise of power by such elites raise issues for governance. Such issues include the approach, priorities and mechanisms. An earlier paper explored astroturfing (where sectional interests establish and/or support what appears to be a grassroots movement to build political and social influence) within a post-democratic context. In it, questions were posed around corporate governance (in reference particularly to sustainability/CSR) and of relevant regulation/legislation. Through governance theories and models, this paper explores some of those questions (and feedback on them) against a background of a changing political landscape within which business (mainly large publicly-owned corporates) operate and make strategic decisions.
