Features observed using the camera along the profile of horizontal bores are discussed. Water flow was quantified by flow meters. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) was undertaken to investigate the water precipitates within the selected bores. Water flow temperature was recorded to test the hypothesis of a possibility to indicate whether a borehole was draining from the saturated zone or from the surface water through its temperature. The investigations have been conducted to determine the cause of change in the efficiency of horizontal boreholes and find a reliable measure to assess longevity and performance of horizontal drains. Bore efficiency has been defined as the bore functioning as a preferential path for water within the batter to be drained out to reduce the saturated zone and associated pore water pressures within the batter. The results suggest blockages and fractures inside the bores can be considered the leading cause of the change in the efficiency of a bore. Blockages occur because of sediment accumulation and because of coal chunks from internal wall collapses. Internal fractures affect efficiency when they become the water preferred path; thus, retaining water flowing within the batter. The bore’s longevity is considered the period of the bore is considered effective. Water flow measurement is suggested as a reliable measure to assess bores’ longevity.]]> Tue 10 May 2022 11:21:59 AEST ]]> An investigation of heat stress epidemiology, prevention guidelines, and sporting environment http://researchonline.federation.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:17662 Tue 09 May 2023 14:00:18 AEST ]]> Examining the assessment and development of a fundamental motor skill and the efficacy of peer teaching instructional approaches http://researchonline.federation.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:17656 Tue 09 May 2023 13:46:21 AEST ]]> Cytoskeletal plakins in epithelial ovarian cancer http://researchonline.federation.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:19228 Tue 09 Jul 2024 14:00:51 AEST ]]> ‘A life less ordinary’ : to downshift or not to downshift : why people make or don’t make decisions to change their lives? http://researchonline.federation.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:18563 Tue 07 Nov 2023 15:24:53 AEDT ]]> Keynes from below : a social history of Second World War Keynesian economics http://researchonline.federation.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:18561 Tue 07 Nov 2023 15:22:17 AEDT ]]> Superannuation in Australia : a mixed methods study into engagement of superannuants http://researchonline.federation.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:18560 Tue 07 Nov 2023 15:22:17 AEDT ]]> An examination of peripheral blood to reflect transcriptomic adaptation to physical exercise training in sedentary men compared with sex-matched athletic phenotypes http://researchonline.federation.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:16145 Tue 07 Jun 2022 11:08:00 AEST ]]> A multi-proxy approach to track ecological change in Gunbower Wetlands, Victoria, Australia http://researchonline.federation.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:16144 Tue 07 Jun 2022 10:46:59 AEST ]]> Development of a long-term climatology of tropical 1 cyclones and depressions for the South Pacific 2 Ocean basin http://researchonline.federation.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:18314 Tue 05 Sep 2023 10:28:04 AEST ]]> The Glovers : a settler family in Van Diemen’s land http://researchonline.federation.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:18300 Tue 05 Sep 2023 10:27:32 AEST ]]> Statistical assessment of Australian bushfire conditions : long-term changes and variability http://researchonline.federation.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:18293 Tue 05 Sep 2023 09:59:58 AEST ]]> Language and the built, natural, social, and symbolic environments during bad news conversations for people with a life-limiting illness : a case study methodology http://researchonline.federation.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:19044 Tue 05 Mar 2024 10:00:10 AEDT ]]> The idea of audience : audience development and the creative industries in Australia's small-to-medium performing arts sector http://researchonline.federation.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:16638 Tue 04 Oct 2022 14:51:17 AEDT ]]> The role of sprint training in hamstring strain injury prevention for field sport athletes http://researchonline.federation.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:16627 90%Vmax) is too low to elicit an injury prevention or training stimulus. Optimum conditions are likely to be in the region of: - 40°C to 60°C to balance reaction speed and peroxide efficacy. - High humic acid yields require between 1:1 to 1.5:1 peroxide (35% w/v) to lignite (db) ratio. - Minimising humin yields requires a minimum of 2:1 peroxide to lignite. - High fulvic acid yields require between 3:1 to 4:1 peroxide (35% w/v) to lignite (db) ratio. This research shows that Loy Yang RoM lignite can be progressively oxidised with hydrogen peroxide to produce commercially relevant yields of humic and fulvic acids. A large portion of the humin is converted into humic or fulvic acids, and what remained was more oxidation resistant and water-insoluble aliphatic components. Elemental proportions shift within each fraction during oxidation. For the 2015 and 2021 RoM lignite samples; the O/C for the reaction solids increased by 36% and 16% for the respective lignites. The O/C changes for the HAs were 22% and 19% respectively. The humin undergoes a sizeable shift in H/C ratio consistent with aliphatic enhancement. The ratios elevate by 14% with oxidation for both the 2015 and 2021 lignites. Extensive lignite, reaction slurry and reaction product characterisation including slurry pH, spectroscopy (UV-vis, FTIR and NMR), and pyrolysis GC/MS assist in understanding the structural changes occurring during oxidation as well as identify promising on-line reaction monitoring technologies. Elemental (CHNSO), FTIR, NMR and functional group titrations show that the fundamental organic structural changes to the humic acid fraction achieved through controlled oxidation were greater acidity (particularly carboxylic acid content) and a transition from aromatic to more aliphatic character overall. No combination of ratios or slurry conditions tested produced a humic acid with the same chemical structural properties as those extracted from the reference Leonardite. However, it is possible to match some properties under the combinations tested. Larger-scale reactions (10 and 100 L) show that real-time reaction monitoring as well as adequate heating and cooling capacity are essential for commercialising the conceptual lignite oxidation process. Proactively dealing with an inherently variable feedstock and humic product composition is heavily dependent on the intersection of multiple variables. For example, tracking pH, reaction enthalpy, and UV-vis absorbance of prepared samples can provide valuable real-time feedback on the progress of a reaction. Combining these techniques with redox titrations could measure residual peroxide and help manage reaction control parameters or better understand reaction kinetics for process optimisation.]]> Thu 29 Jun 2023 11:22:44 AEST ]]> Australian nursing students’ perceptions of being a nurse : a mixed methods study http://researchonline.federation.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:18379 Thu 28 Sep 2023 12:10:22 AEST ]]> Diegetic wounds : the representation of individual and collective trauma in found footage horror films http://researchonline.federation.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:15619 Thu 27 Apr 2023 15:47:08 AEST ]]> Women in the Australian cartographic corps during World War Two : their work and ongoing legacy in australian history and culture http://researchonline.federation.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:17822 Thu 25 May 2023 11:03:09 AEST ]]> Ecology and management of a tropical invasive weed, Cyperus aromaticus (Navua sedge) in Queensland, Australia http://researchonline.federation.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:17794 Thu 25 May 2023 10:00:11 AEST ]]> Are nurse academics technology ready?
