Germination significantly declined as salinity and osmotic stress increased for both populations, with seeds from the Tempy population were more affected by NaCl >100 mM than seeds from Werribee, but in neither population was there any observed effect of pH on germination (>80% germination in both populations at all tested pH ranges). For both populations, germination significantly decreased as burial depth increased however, the two populations differed with regard to response to burial depth treatment, whereby seeds from the Tempy population had higher emergence than those from Werribee at 0.5 cm burial depth. These results suggest that light-reducing management techniques such as mulching or use of crop residues will be unsuccessful for preventing germination of wild lettuce. By contrast, burial of seeds at a depth of at least 4 cm will significantly reduce their emergence.]]> Wed 07 Apr 2021 14:02:08 AEST ]]> Isolation and characterisation of recalcitrant organic components from an estuarine sediment core http://researchonline.federation.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:13743 Wed 07 Apr 2021 14:01:51 AEST ]]> Livestock grazing effects on riparian bird breeding behaviour in agricultural landscapes http://researchonline.federation.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:13520 Wed 07 Apr 2021 14:01:39 AEST ]]> The role of interoperable data standards in precision livestock farming in extensive livestock systems : A review http://researchonline.federation.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:13509 Wed 07 Apr 2021 14:01:38 AEST ]]> Influenza A(H5N1) viruses with A(H9N2) single gene (matrix or PB1) reassortment isolated from Cambodian live bird markets http://researchonline.federation.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:13455 Wed 07 Apr 2021 14:01:36 AEST ]]> Taxonomy based on science is necessary for global conservation http://researchonline.federation.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:13294 Wed 07 Apr 2021 14:01:27 AEST ]]> Influence of controlled burning on the mobility and temporal variations of potentially toxic metals (PTMs) in the soils of a legacy gold mine site in Central Victoria, Australia http://researchonline.federation.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:13272 Wed 07 Apr 2021 14:01:26 AEST ]]> Seed germination response of a noxious agricultural weed Echium plantagineum to temperature, light, pH, drought stress, salinity, heat and smoke http://researchonline.federation.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:13092 Wed 07 Apr 2021 14:01:17 AEST ]]> Integrative conservation of riparian zones http://researchonline.federation.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:13002 Wed 07 Apr 2021 14:01:11 AEST ]]> CHROMagar COL-APSE : A selective bacterial culture medium for the isolation and differentiation of colistin-resistant gram-negative pathogens http://researchonline.federation.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:12986 Wed 07 Apr 2021 14:01:11 AEST ]]> Impact of intermittent preventive treatment in pregnancy with azithromycin-containing regimens on maternal nasopharyngeal carriage and antibiotic sensitivity of Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Staphylococcus aureus : A cross-sectional survey at delivery http://researchonline.federation.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:12970 Wed 07 Apr 2021 14:01:10 AEST ]]> Multilocus sequence typing of Streptococcus pneumoniae by use of mass spectrometry http://researchonline.federation.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:12922 Wed 07 Apr 2021 14:01:07 AEST ]]> Drying and denaturation characteristics of α-LACTALBUMIN, β-lactoglobulin, and bovine serum albumin in a convective drying process http://researchonline.federation.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/vital:12771 0.05) denatured in these drying conditions. Treatments comprised fencing to exclude stock, spraying or slashing to reduce weed cover, followed by planting with tube stock. Across the six subcatchments, 12 reference (remnant) sites were used to provide a benchmark for species richness, structural and recruitment characteristics and to aid interpretation of the effects of the restoration intervention. Vegetation structure was well developed in the treated sites by 4-8 years after treatment. However, structural complexity was higher at remnant sites than at treated or untreated sites due to a higher richness of small shrubs. Tree and shrub recruitment occurred in all remnant sites and at 64% of sites treated >4 years ago. Most seedling recruitment at treatment sites was by Acacia spp. This assessment provides data on species richness, structure and recruitment characteristics following restoration interventions. There was considerable reformation of pyrite within former sulfuric horizons after tidal inundation with reduced inorganic sulfur increasing by ∼ 60 μmol g- 1. Acid-volatile sulfide also accumulated, but mainly near the soil surface (up to 16 μmol g- 1). Reduction of Fe(III) minerals strongly influences the geochemistry of the tidally inundated soils. After tidal inundation the soil pH and Eh closely followed the iron redox couple and there was non-sulfidic solid-phase Fe(II) up to 600 μmol g- 1. There was also substantial diagenetic enrichment of poorly crystalline Fe-oxides near the soil surface following tidal inundation, with reactive Fe spanning 400-1800 μmol g- 1. While the decreases in soil acidity documented here are likely due to a combination of marine alkalinity inputs and reduction of both Fe and SO42-, the relative importance of each process remains to be determined. This study demonstrates that marine tidal inundation can be an effective landscape-scale strategy for ameliorating severe acidity associated with drained acid sulfate soils. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. Soil structure formation, as measured by isolating water-stable aggregates, was induced in all mixtures and intensified in the presence of litter. In the mixtures with litter, there was a predominant formation of large macroaggregates (0.63−30 mm) which stored >80 % of the total OC.
