Learning to Lead : The social nature of women's development in sport leadership

- Description: Despite the ubiquitous political and educational strategies aimed at redressing gender inequality in sport in Australia for the past 30 years, the number of women in sport in decision-making and leadership positions has remained low when compared to men. While a number of studies have explored women’s under-representation in sport leadership roles, there is limited understanding of how women practice sport leadership and how they develop as leaders. To address this gap in the literature, this study took a humanistic approach to account for, and consider, the nature of experience and the influence of context. This study sought to provide a more personal, nuanced, and socially situated understanding of how women practiced and learned to lead in sport. An interpretive qualitative research design framed by a social constructivist lens was used for this study to examine 23 women’s accounts of what constituted and framed their leadership practices, including how they learned leadership from their engagement in day-to-day social practices and life experiences over time. Data for this study were generated through in-depth, semi-structured interviews conducted with each of the participants over a period of two years. A multi-case study approach was used to analyse the data. It was found that the participants’ leadership practice featured distinctive feminine characteristics. However, for those participants at the elite level their approaches to leadership were characterised by interaction that seemed to be traditional masculine features of leadership with the participants’ “core” feminine approaches to leadership. The participants’ leadership practice focused on social interaction and relationship building underpinned by a strong sense of moral and ethical values. Key features included collaborative decision-making, taking a team-oriented approach, using open dialogue, valuing relationships and caring about others, and positive modelling. The model of authentic leadership offered a useful way of conceptualising how the participants’ approached their practice of leadership. An examination of the participants’ accounts of their experiences of the ways they learned their leadership highlighted that leadership development for these women was a relational and social process of learning over a lifelong journey that was influenced by individual, personal experience situated within larger socio-cultural contexts. The relational nature of the participants’ learning of leadership was fundamentally connected to, and drawn from their interactions and interplay within their day-to-day social practices and life experiences from their early childhood through to their adulthood. The findings of study revealed that a range of past and present experiences and social factors influenced and shaped the participants’ values and beliefs about their leadership practice such as the development of their awareness and self-belief in their ability, the value of relationship building, and development of strength of character associated with resilience. This study also identified the significance of the informal social nature of the development of leadership through the participants’ “lived” experiences but also recognised the importance of some formal learning in developing the human capital aspects of the participants’ leadership. Findings from this study have contributed to the relatively small body of literature concerned with the examination of leadership practice and learning leadership for women in a context of sport. This study has drawn attention to the different sets of relationships that women draw on to develop their leadership practice from a young age through to their adulthood, and has highlighted the multidimensional role of relational dynamics in the construction of leadership. This study has also illustrated the importance of experiential and situated learning that occurs during the formative years through to adulthood in terms of developing women’s social skills and social awareness. These findings have implications for the way in which women’s sport leadership practice is viewed and encourages a rethinking on how affirmative action policies address the leadership developed for women in sport in Australia.

Distributed and parallel methods for structural convex optimization

- Description: There has been considerable recent interest in optimization methods associated with a multi-agent network. The goal is to optimize a global objective function which is a sum of local objective functions only known by the agents through the network. The focus of this dissertation is the development of optimization algorithms for the special class when the optimization problem of interest has an additive or separable structure. Specifically, we are concerned with two classes of convex optimization problems. The first one is called as multi-agent convex problems and they arise in many network applications, including in-network estimation, machine learning and signal processing. The second one is termed as separable convex problems and they arise in diverse applications, including network resource allocation, and distributed model prediction and control. Due to the structure of problems and privacy of local objective functions, special optimization methods are always desirable, especially for large-scale structured problems. For the multi-agent convex problems with simple constraints, we develop gradient-free distributed methods based on the incremental and consensus strategies. The convergence analysis and convergence rates of proposed methods are provided. By comparison, existing distributed algorithms require first-order information of objective functions, but our methods only involve the estimates of objective function value. Therefore, the proposed methods are suitable to solve more general problems even when the first-order information of problems is unavailable or costly to compute. In practical applications a wide variety of problems are formulated as multi-agent optimization problems subject to equality and (or) inequality constraints. Methods available for solving this type of problems are still limited in the literature. Most of them are based on the Lagrangian duality, and there is no estimates on the convergence rate. In the thesis, we develop a distributed proximal-gradient method to solve multi-agent convex problems under global inequality constraints. Moreover, we provide the convergence analysis of the proposed method and obtain the explicit estimates of convergence rate. Our method relies on the exact penalty function method and multi-consensus averaging, not involving the Lagrangian multipliers. For the separable convex problems with linear constraints, on the framework of Lagrangian dual decomposition, we develop fast gradient-based optimization methods, including a fast dual gradient-projection method and a fast dual gradient method. In addition to parallel implementation of the algorithm, our focus is that the algorithm has faster convergence rate, since existing dual subgradient-based algorithms suffer from a slow convergence rate. Our proposed algorithms are based Nesterov’s smoothing technique and several fast gradient schemes. The explicit convergence rates of the proposed algorithms are obtained, which are superior to those obtained by subgradient-based algorithms. The proposed algorithms are applied to a real-pricing problem in smart grid and a network utility maximum problem. Dual decomposition methods often involve in finding the exact solution of an inner subproblem at each iteration. However, from a practical point of view, the subproblem is never solved exactly. Hence, we extend the proposed fast dual gradient-projection method to the inexact setting. Although the inner subproblem is solved only up to certain precision, we provide a complete analysis of computational complexity on the generated approximate solutions. Thus, our inexact version has the attractive computational advantage that the subproblem only needs to be solved with certain accuracy while still maintaining the same iteration complexity as the exact counterpart.

Managed identities : How do Australian university students who stutter negotiate their studies?

- Description: Previous social research focused on people who stutter has problematised and largely ignored the experiences of university students who stutter, relying heavily upon surveys of teachers and peers while almost ignoring the authentic voices of students who stutter. Using a novel bricolage approach incorporating autoethnography, this project posed the question: “How do students who stutter negotiate their university experiences in Australia?” In 2008, a unique, web-based audit of 39 Australian public universities concluded that little publicly accessible information about stuttering support services was available for prospective university students. In many ways, stuttering is absent from disability classifications and service systems in higher education. An online survey of 102 Australian university students who stutter, and follow-up individual interviews with 15 students, revealed how these students manage their social identities from enrolment through to graduation. Only a minority of students reported ever formally disclosing their functional impairment to university support services or academic staff. This meant they rejected and/or avoided the disability label and associated stigma. The students were found to exercise a high degree of individual agency and creativity throughout their university journey. Many employed ‘concessional bargaining’ techniques to effectively navigate the oral assessment requirements during their degrees. Analysis of the interview and survey data is interspersed with critical self-reflection by the author – as a university lecturer who himself stutters. This thesis makes a significant contribution to shaping our understanding of the social identities and trajectories of university students who stutter. These students have been recast as positive, purposeful, resourceful and creative agents whose actions can be largely understood from a social model of disability. A series of recommendations for supporting and teaching these students are made to key stakeholders in higher education.

- Description: This thesis investigates tourism governance models for sustainable heritage tourism in Kandy, a world heritage city situated in central Sri Lanka. Additionally, it explains how the success of sustainable heritage tourism has underpinned sustainable livelihoods development from a socio-cultural perspective. The main objective is to find, identify and assess the influence of tourism governance on sustainable heritage tourism in Sri Lanka. Stemming from this approach is the development of a tourism governance model for sustainable heritage tourism in Kandy. This thesis is intended as a response to the challenges of adopting a sustainable livelihoods development approach. Accordingly, it investigates the role sustainable heritage tourism plays in host community development within the context of sociocultural, economic and environmental aspects in Kandy. Employing a qualitative methodological approach, this thesis is underpinned by an interpretive research philosophy. Research data was collected through field-based in-country interviews and open-ended questionnaires as this approach allowed respondents to offer more information and to include their feelings, attitudes and understanding of the subject. Research results from in-country fieldwork reveal that tourism governance models have a major influence on the viability of sustainable heritage tourism at Sri Lankan heritage destinations. Macro-scale and micro-scale factors were found to be influential in tourism governance models. Additionally, sustainable heritage tourism was found to be a persuasive factor in host community development. Research from this thesis provides policy recommendations and potential management frameworks for tourism practitioners and policy makers. These insights into Kandy and other Sri Lankan heritage localities enable improvement of tourism governance systems and sustainable heritage tourism.

- Description: This document constitutes the submission of Stephen Young for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Federation University Australia. The submission is offered as a thesis by publication – representing a summary of the candidate’s research based around a number of already-published peer-reviewed papers, supported by additional analysis and commentary. The research project is entitled “Efficacy and Understanding of the Safety Hierarchy of Controls”. The key question posed in this thesis is stated as: “What constrains understanding of the efficacy of the safety hierarchy?” This question was broken down into three sub-questions, each of which is represented within this submission as Part One, Part Two, and Part Three respectively. The three questions are stated as: 1. How may contemporary evidence demonstrate the efficacy of the safety hierarchy? 2. What are the constraints on understanding the hazard vector as it relates to the safety hierarchy? 3. What is the current understanding of hazard mitigation in a selected industry and how may the safety hierarchy be implemented to ameliorate a key hazard? The Introduction indicates the importance of the topic and explains the background to the concept known as the [safety] hierarchy of control, including a distinction between hazard and risk. It then undertakes a brief review of the development of twentieth century safety literature, including a consideration of how safety analysis has been split into the energy damage model and the anthropocentric model – complicated by a persistence of myth and superstition. An update of more recent safety literature in the twenty-first century and literature relating to governance decision making is also included. The intended contribution of this research project is laid out along with an explanation of how the thesis is organised. Part One seeks to use contemporary evidence to demonstrate the efficacy of the safety hierarchy. This is primarily achieved by presenting two case studies predominantly focussed on a New Zealand aluminium smelter. The first paper, “From zero to hero: A case study of industrial injury reduction”, used the candidate’s earlier research documenting that company’s remarkable journey from a worksite with an unenviably high level of injuries to that of one of the safest industrial worksites in the world. It contextualised the research within the contemporary zero accident vision (ZAV) and considered the company’s use of the hierarchy of controls as a primary means of hazard intervention. This paper was published in Safety Science in 2014. A further study was conducted later in 2014 to qualitatively consider the effect on safety of the difficult economic times being experienced by the aluminium industry. This purposive critical case study revisited the New Zealand aluminium smelter to document the observations of safety managers as they sought to continue the company’s exemplary safety record in the face of financial duress. “Safety in hard times: A qualitative analysis of safety concerns in two industrial plants under financial duress” also included parallel observations of safety managers from an Australian aluminium rolling mill as it closed down in response to the same economic factors. The impact of lean management and the ongoing efficacy of hierarchy of controls methodology within both plants was documented and considered. This paper was published in Safety Science in 2018. Insofar as is possible using case studies, both papers demonstrated the efficacy of the hierarchy of control as an intervention methodology for ameliorating hazards in the workplace. Part Two seeks to consider the constraints on understanding the hazard vector as it relates to the hierarchy of controls. A focussed literature review entitled “The root cause fallacy” was conducted to better understand the uses of the word cause in philosophy, law, and science – as well as in the applied science of safety management. This paper highlighted the limitations of the concept of root cause as a safety intervention precept; thereby identifying a significant constraint on understanding the hazard vector and the hierarchy of control. This is followed by a chapter deconstructing the most common version of the hierarchy of controls, pointing out how it could be made easier to understand and proposing a simplified version – more aligned to the underlying hazard vector. This alignment has been successfully presented in a number a conferences including the proceedings of 2014 Australian Systems Safety Conference; and ultimately, to the 15th World Congress on Public Health in 2017. Part Three applies the knowledge gained in Parts One and Two, and presents two studies investigating the fermentation industry to both understand the role of the hierarchy of controls in hazard mitigation and to illustrate how it can be more effectively implemented. The first paper took the potentially catastrophic hazard of asphyxiation from elevated levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) and demonstrated how the hierarchy of controls could be applied to more effectively control the hazard. The second paper surveyed the rapidly growing boutique beer industry in Victoria and Tasmania to understand how hazards were being managed, and the degree to which the hierarchy of controls was used to ameliorate the identified hazards. Together, these papers illustrated that application of the hierarchy of controls is largely conspicuous by its absence in the mitigation of hazards in a rapidly growing industry; while also demonstrating an effective hierarchal control that could evade an almost inevitable looming catastrophe. In conclusion, this thesis demonstrates the efficacy of the hierarchy of controls in Part One. In Part Two, it considers the linguistic origin of the word cause and consequently reconsiders the hazard vector insofar as it relates to the hierarchy of controls – incorporating these findings into a simpler and more easily understood hierarchy. Part Three provides a demonstration of how the hierarchy of controls can be applied to a difficult hazard in an emerging industry and also highlights the contemporary deficiencies in how that industry currently deals with the hazards they identify. Finally, the key question “What constrains understanding of the efficacy of the safety hierarchy?” is addressed by summarising the three parts of this thesis and concluding: 1. An assiduous application of the hierarchy of controls can prevent occupational injuries. 2. The efficacy of the hierarchy of controls is constrained by the following factors: a. Over-complication of what is a simple concept; b. Misunderstanding of how hazard interventions may be used to prevent injury; c. Misunderstanding of the construct of cause as it relates to the hazard vector. 3. Appropriate recognition of the relative significance of identified hazards is central to the understanding of the safety hierarchy.

This purposive critical case study revisited the New Zealand aluminium smelter to document the observations of safety managers as they sought to continue the company’s exemplary safety record in the face of financial duress. “Safety in hard times: A qualitative analysis of safety concerns in two industrial plants under financial duress” also included parallel observations of safety managers from an Australian aluminium rolling mill as it closed down in response to the same economic factors. The impact of lean management and the ongoing efficacy of hierarchy of controls methodology within both plants was documented and considered. This paper was published in Safety Science in 2018. Insofar as is possible using case studies, both papers demonstrated the efficacy of the hierarchy of control as an intervention methodology for ameliorating hazards in the workplace. Part Two seeks to consider the constraints on understanding the hazard vector as it relates to the hierarchy of controls. A focussed literature review entitled “The root cause fallacy” was conducted to better understand the uses of the word cause in philosophy, law, and science – as well as in the applied science of safety management. This paper highlighted the limitations of the concept of root cause as a safety intervention precept; thereby identifying a significant constraint on understanding the hazard vector and the hierarchy of control. This is followed by a chapter deconstructing the most common version of the hierarchy of controls, pointing out how it could be made easier to understand and proposing a simplified version – more aligned to the underlying hazard vector. This alignment has been successfully presented in a number a conferences including the proceedings of 2014 Australian Systems Safety Conference; and ultimately, to the 15th World Congress on Public Health in 2017. Part Three applies the knowledge gained in Parts One and Two, and presents two studies investigating the fermentation industry to both understand the role of the hierarchy of controls in hazard mitigation and to illustrate how it can be more effectively implemented. The first paper took the potentially catastrophic hazard of asphyxiation from elevated levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) and demonstrated how the hierarchy of controls could be applied to more effectively control the hazard. The second paper surveyed the rapidly growing boutique beer industry in Victoria and Tasmania to understand how hazards were being managed, and the degree to which the hierarchy of controls was used to ameliorate the identified hazards. Together, these papers illustrated that application of the hierarchy of controls is largely conspicuous by its absence in the mitigation of hazards in a rapidly growing industry; while also demonstrating an effective hierarchal control that could evade an almost inevitable looming catastrophe. In conclusion, this thesis demonstrates the efficacy of the hierarchy of controls in Part One. In Part Two, it considers the linguistic origin of the word cause and consequently reconsiders the hazard vector insofar as it relates to the hierarchy of controls – incorporating these findings into a simpler and more easily understood hierarchy. Part Three provides a demonstration of how the hierarchy of controls can be applied to a difficult hazard in an emerging industry and also highlights the contemporary deficiencies in how that industry currently deals with the hazards they identify. Finally, the key question “What constrains understanding of the efficacy of the safety hierarchy?” is addressed by summarising the three parts of this thesis and concluding: 1. An assiduous application of the hierarchy of controls can prevent occupational injuries. 2. The efficacy of the hierarchy of controls is constrained by the following factors: a. Over-complication of what is a simple concept; b. Misunderstanding of how hazard interventions may be used to prevent injury; c. Misunderstanding of the construct of cause as it relates to the hazard vector. 3. Appropriate recognition of the relative significance of identified hazards is central to the understanding of the safety hierarchy.

For the young women of Rural Valley, their experience of conflict is intrinsically tied to the cultural spaces and places they occupy. In this thesis, young women’s voices and experiences of conflict in a regional secondary school are considered through a critical perspective situated within critical theory. A critical ethnography has been conducted drawing upon the notion of horizontal violence to develop understandings of the nature of conflict as experienced by young women from regional Australia. In order to illuminate the lived experiences of conflict for young women, narrative portraiture is used as a representational method to deconstruct traditional views of ethnographic writing. In doing so, this research provides a counter-narrative to dominant discourses about how young women experience and manage conflict and how they navigate their relationships when conflict arises. This research is significant because it challenges stereotypical notions of what conflict means to young girls in a regional secondary school context. The findings of this study highlight that young women use group-specific strategies to negotiate friendships and confront structural inequalities of a hegemonic education system. This research ultimately advocates for understandings of conflict that move away from deficit discourses to advance discussions concerned with the gendered nature of violence within Australian society.

In particular, research regarding the role of hosts of VFR travellers in shaping their trips including travel decisions and activities has been examined by few researchers. No previous research explored the differences in hosting between immigrant and non-immigrant local residents despite VFR travel being commonly associated with migration in existing literature. Before this research, the differences between hosting friends and relatives had been neglected, resulting in VFR hosts being treated as one homogenous group. Previous research also failed to empirically test the influence of destination on the hosting of VFRs. Thus, this is the first study examining the hosting of VFRs through combining how migration, relationship types, and destination types, impact VFR travel experiences for hosts. Given that VFR travel is a significant component of Australia’s visitor numbers, and that it comprises a large immigrant population, Australia is a suitable setting for this study. Considering the multi-dimensional elements in the study, the “VFR Whole Tourism Systems Model” was used as the conceptual model for this study. Quantitative research was conducted nationally with 331 residents, collected through an online survey, assessing the differences and similarities in hosting behaviours. Qualitative research was undertaken through in-depth interviews with 34 local residents in three contrasting destinations in Victoria understanding the social interactions between VFR hosts and their visiting friends/relatives. Significant differences were found between immigrants and nonimmigrants regarding attracting VFRs and hosting experiences. Differences were also noted between hosting friends versus hosting relatives, and it was also determined that the destination types impact VFR hosting. Such findings have provided valuable insights regarding the economic and social benefits of promoting local marketing campaign targeting local residents.

- Description: This study asks the question ‘What is the value of meaning created through social learning in informal virtual communities?’. By researching how people learn in two virtual communities of practice, based around forums, it endeavours to explore learning in online environments that are unconnected to workplace or educational institutions. Both communities studied in this project are meeting places for peers who pursue a domain of personal interest, hence neither community defines itself as a learning environment but as a social meeting place for people to share similar pursuits. The rationale of this study was to explore in-depth the plethora of resources that forum-based communities offer researchers of learning outside the academy, in order to understand the intricacies of un-facilitated social learning. A research strategy for this study was developed from Crotty's (1998) platform which defines: research methods; a methodology; a theoretical perspective; and an epistemology. Triangulated research methods of interview, observation, and personal participation form the basis of data collection. Ethnography, which incorporates auto-ethnography, was the chosen methodology, and the study is centred on a constructivist epistemology. This study employs an interpretivist theoretical perspective, relying on the approaches of two theorists to analyse the data. Both communities were explored by developing four specific propositions from an in-depth analysis of the available literature on informal learning, virtual environments and communities, together with the theoretical understandings of Wenger (1998) regarding Communities of Practice, and Candy (1991) relating to autodidactic and constructed learning. Two viewpoints were chosen because whilst there are a number of theoretical perspectives that can be applied to informal learning in a virtual environment, there is no one agreed theory which comprehensively explains the complexities of individual and social learning in virtual communities. Despite recognition of the Internet as a major source of many people’s informal learning, there is still comparatively limited research undertaken on how this happens. This study is intended to assist in the reduction of this gap by examining aspects of learning including: the connection between autonomous learners and virtual communities; the effect of the written format of the communities observed on dispersing meaning; and the impact of the virtuality of the community on the process of learning and creation of meaning. By undertaking an ethnographical examination of the nature of learning in two informal virtual communities based around written asynchronous forums, this study is intended to contribute to understanding the worth of informal learning in virtual communities where learning occurs between peers. This study contributes to knowledge through its exploration of the way learning occurs in un-facilitated environments and the legitimacy of the outcomes of that learning. Through this exploration, it fosters an appreciation of the value of meaning created in these social environments, as well as their role in validation of communal and individual meaning. It is able to do this by circumnavigating the difficulties earlier researchers have had in developing in-depth studies of the topic because it does not rely implicitly on the perspectives of those participating, or limited-time observations. The study concludes that for both communities their virtuality greatly influences the way their practice develops, as well as how this practice shapes the way in which their members learn in informal environments. It also concludes that learning in these environments is a very complex, often sophisticated, and sometimes contradictory process that is governed by many different, and occasionally competing, aims of individuals and communities. This study also resolved that because of the very complexity of this learning, these two communities produce some very deep and meaningful contributions to their respective domains. As individuals connected within these communities in order to explore their interest in their respective domains, the communities became: repositories of ideas and resources; places to engage in negotiating and renegotiating meaning; and places to validate personal meaning through testing against established community understandings and peer views. Thus after extensive ethnographical research on both communities of this study, it is considered that this work advances the knowledge of learning outside the academy by providing evidence that people do learn effectively in informal virtual communities

Minkowski-type (lp ) distance is widely used for image retrieval, however it has its limitations. It focuses on distance between image features and ignores the data distribution of the image features, which can play an important role in measuring perceptual similarity of images. !! also favours the most dominant components in calculating the total dissimilarity. A data dependent measure, named !! -dissimilarity, which estimates the dissimilarity using the data distribution, has been proposed recently. Rather than relying on geometric distance, it measures the dissimilarity between two instances in each dimension as a probability mass in a region that encloses the two instances. It considers two instances in a sparse region to be more similar than in a dense region. Using the probability of data mass enables all the dimensions of feature vectors to contribute in the final estimate of dissimilarity, so it does not just heavily bias towards the most dominant components. However, relying only on data distribution and completely ignoring the geometric distance raise another limitation. This can result in finding two instances similar only due to being in a sparse region, however if the geometric distance between them is large then they are not perceptually similar. To address this limitation we proposed a new hybrid data dependent dissimilarity (HDDD) measure that considers both data distribution as well as geometric distance. Our experimental results using Corel database and Caltech 101 show that (HDDD) leads to higher image retrieval performance than lp distance (lpD) and mp.

Theoretical perspectives on using epidemiology and systems thinking to better understand the aetiology and prevention of distance running-related injury

This is likely attributable to a growing societal concern for the documented rise in several lifestyle-related chronic diseases. As a form of exercise, running provides significant beneficial effects on a range of biomedical health indices, and is the preferred physical activity of choice for many people given its high accessibility and relatively low financial cost. Notwithstanding the many health-related benefits associated with running, the risk of sustaining a distance running-related injury (RRI) can be high. Therefore, from an injury prevention perspective, understanding why runners sustain RRI is of primary scientific importance. Over the last fifty years, the science behind RRI causation and prevention has attracted considerable interest amongst sports injury prevention researchers. During that time, there has been a concerted scholarly effort to understand the aetiology of RRI from an epidemiological and clinical research-based standpoint. Traditional scientific approaches have attempted to identify the effect of discrete trainingrelated, behavioural, and/or biomechanical exposures on the risk of developing either general or specific RRI. Despite what is now a considerable body of work, several descriptive and systematic reviews have found a history of previous injury to be the only definitive risk factor for subsequent RRI development. Alongside the continuing application of traditional scientific approaches, this PhD thesis promotes the use of a complementary ‘systems thinking’ theoretical perspective for better understanding the development and prevention of RRI. There are several contained chapters, the first of which is a systematic review of the RRI aetiological literature. After examining in closer detail the causal mechanism underpinning RRI development, a series of papers urge injury prevention scientists to consider drawing on alternative philosophical perspectives when planning and designing research. - Description: Adults aged 65 years or older constitute the fastest growing age group worldwide, leading to greater numbers of people requiring care in residential facilities. Adults in these facilities have higher levels of depression, lower levels of social support, and lower levels of sense of belonging compared with older adults living in the community. Research has begun to assess the effectiveness of interventions aimed at improving the mental health of aged care residents. Within this population, cognitive and physical benefits of playing video games have been documented in the literature, as well as greater social interaction, and decreased loneliness. The aim of the current study was to investigate the effectiveness of playing Wii bowling twice weekly, with up to 3 other residents, for 6 weeks. An Australian sample of 31 women and 8 men between the ages of 65 and 95 years (Mean age = 85.68, SD = 9.62) were randomised to either a treatment or control group based on their place of residence. The residents completed demographic information, The Veterans Affairs Saint Louis University Mental Status Exam, the Geriatric Depression Scale Short Form, the Social Provisions Scale, and three visual analogue scales to measure sense of belonging and mood. These scales were completed pre-intervention (0 weeks), postintervention (6 weeks), and at 2-month follow up (14 weeks). Qualitative data on social interaction between group members was also collected at weeks 1, 3, and 6. Results did not support the use of the Wii to improve residents’ self-reported levels of depression, social support, sense of belonging, or mood. Social interaction increased over the 6 weeks, as measured by interaction analyses and also residents’ comments. Overall, findings indicate that Wii bowling may be a useful intervention as part of a comprehensive care program to increase social interaction within aged care. Pervasive environmental problems associated with aged care, as well as participant characteristics, may have reduced the effectiveness of the intervention program.

Negotiating policy - renegotiating practice : Understanding language, literacy and numeracy teachers' professional identities within discursive weather systems

- Description: This thesis examines the professional identities of teachers in light of Australian vocational educational policy reform since the late 1980s. Although the reform has been national, this study is located within Victoria. It is specifically interested in the professional identities of Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) teachers who work within the Vocational Education and Training sector. This study brings the voices of LLN specialists to the forefront. Poststructural theory, with particular emphasis on the work of Michel Foucault and narrative inquiry, is used to make sense of these voices, collectively known as the ‘voice of practice’. This study treats professional identity as a multiple term encompassing a range of assigned roles and chosen identities; as such, it argues that professional identity should be seen as fluid and dynamic and as something that continues to evolve. The teachers involved in this study actively negotiated various discourses related to the shaping of professional identity. The effects of this were threefold: LLN teachers ascribed to certain identity positions in line with government policy and institute directives; they preserved other identities; and they forged new identities based on opportunism and a resistance to policy discourse. While there has been a decline in the Adult and Community Education voice in policy development, within practice, this study found that teachers have retained a voice through the maintenance and creation of teaching practices that sit outside policy. Further, this study found that although numerous stakeholders invest in the provision of LLN, it is learners who hold a lot of the power; indeed, the needs of learners, feedback from learners and their transformative learning experiences are the primary drivers in teacher motivation and identity. Finally, this study found a misalignment between policy discourse and the voice of practice that requires attention if LLN policies are to be successfully implemented.

The Wendouree West Community Renewal was part of a broader Victorian state government intervention, Neighbourhood Renewal, which worked ‘on’ communities identified as disadvantaged. The study investigated the experiences of key residents, along with those of the author, during the period 2001-2013. The main contention is that Wendouree West Community Renewal project colluded with the welfare sector to impose a hegemonic and alien set of understandings on the community. This study is passionate; it takes a stance that is unashamedly political, ideological and partisan. Its key premise is that government interventions of this kind are damaging to communities like the one investigated. The Wendouree West experience promoted a three-fold residualisation: at the level of a ‘breaking down’ of local economies; an undermining of formal and informal education at a community level; and a manipulation of understandings of place, belonging and community that resulted in the imposition of a fake ’aspirational community’ in Wendouree West. The impact of this three-fold residualisation was a deep stigmatisation of Wendouree West as a ‘non-place’ (Auge, 2008), enabling its ultimate ghettoisation, both within the broader context of the regional city of which Wendouree West forms a small part, and within the understandings of residents themselves. This thesis represents struggle at a number of levels: the struggle of the residents to push back against a hegemonic intervention; the struggle of a scholar to make sense of his own role within the action; and the struggle of how to represent the residents’ stories in ways that are powerful and ‘truthful’ within the context of a PhD thesis. ii The ‘critical hope’ of this work is that the residents are able to push back against this program through acts of resistance and that community organising, in the style of the American radical Saul Alinsky, may represent a possible longer term means for empowerment and self-determination.

However, the film industry in Australia has struggled for many years under a subsidy-driven government intervention process that creates a high degree of dependence on a subsidy-centric model. Motion picture production costs worldwide have risen dramatically over the last decade with Hollywood production budgets commonly exceeding $100 million. Australia as a nation has a proven capability to produce respectable motion pictures at varying production budgets, although this capacity has become entrenched with taxpayers’ money. Historically, subsidy-driven industries in Australia trend towards collapse due primarily to cyclical fiscal deficits and changing funding imperatives at the Commonwealth level. As a PhD by exegesis, the focus of this research was to create, as well as evaluate, a new model of film production that would not be dependent on subsidies. This study evaluated a number of factors that were relevant to establishing a viable micro-budget model. Micro-budget films have received little research attention, with the focus being on major films. This research examined an alternative model, through the creation of a feature-length micro-budget film, called Stakes, and assessed it across a range of criterion to determine whether Australia’s film industry could be strengthened and potentially become self-sufficient. The resulting motion picture premièred in Australian cinemas on October 29th 2015. The justification, methods and results are discussed in detail throughout this exegesis providing strong evidence in favour of the viability for a micro-budget segment in the Australian film industry. Such a model could reduce the risk of Australia’s film industry collapsing if subsidies are reduced or abolished. Thus, this research has significant implications for Australia’s film industry and also contributes strongly to scholarship through providing crucial information on micro-budget films.
