Description: WSNs generates a large amount of data in the form of stream and mining knowledge from the stream of data can be extremely useful. Association rules mining, from the sensor data, has been studied in recent literature. However, sensor association rules mining often produces a huge number of rules, but most of them either are redundant or fail to reflect the true correlation relationship among data objects. In this paper, we address this problem and propose mining of a new type of sensor behavioral pattern called associated-correlated sensor patterns. The proposed behavioral patterns capture not only association-like co-occurrences but also the substantial temporal correlations implied by such co-occurrences in the sensor data. Here, we also use a prefix tree-based structure called associated-correlated sensor pattern-tree (ACSP-tree), which facilitates frequent pattern (FP) growth-based mining technique to generate all associated-correlated patterns from WSN data with only one scan over the sensor database. Extensive performance study shows that our approach is time and memory efficient in finding associated-correlated patterns than the existing most efficient algorithms.

Description: Color image fusion of visible and infra-red imagery can play an important role in multi-sensor night vision systems that are an integral part of modern warfare. Image fusion minimizes the amount of required bandwidth by transmitting the fused image rather than multiple sensor images. Color image fusion can be achieved by combining inputs from original colored sensors or by employing pseudo colorization and color transfer to grayscale images. Various quality measures have been proposed for multi-sensor grayscale image fusion techniques; but no appropriate quality measure has been devised for the quality evaluation of multi-sensor color image fusion. In this paper, we propose a novel color image fusion quality measure, Color Fusion Objective Index (CFOI) based on colorfulness, gradient similarity and mutual information techniques. Experimental results show the effectiveness of CFOI to evaluate the color and salient feature extraction introduced by color fusion techniques into the final fused imagery as well as its consistency with subjective evaluation.

Description: Microarrays measure expression patterns of thousands of genes at a time, under same or diverse conditions, to facilitate faster analysis of biological processes. This gene expression data is being widely used for diagnosis, prognosis and tailored drug discovery. Microarray data, however, commonly contains missing values, which can have high impact on subsequent biological knowledge discovery methods. This has been catalyst for the manifest of different imputation algorithms, including Collateral Missing Value Estimation (CMVE), Bayesian Principal Component Analysis (BPCA), Least Square Impute (LSImpute), Local Least Square Impute (LLSImpute) and K-Nearest Neighbour (KNN). This Chapter investigates the impact of missing values on post genomic knowledge discovery methods like, Gene Selection and Gene Regulatory Network (GRN) reconstruction. A framework for robust subsequent biological knowledge inference has been proposed which has shown significant improvements in the outcomes of Gene Selection and GRN reconstruction methods.

Description: Machine condition monitoring has gained momentum over the years and becoming an essential component in the today’s industrial units. A cost effective machine condition monitoring system is need of the hour for predictive maintenance. In this paper, we have developed a machine condition monitoring system using smart phone, thanks to the rapidly growing smart-phone market both in scalability and computational power. In spite of certain hardware limitations, this paper proposes a machine condition monitoring system which has the tendency to acquire data, build the fault diagnostic model and determine the type of the fault in the case of unknown fault signatures. Results for the fault detection accuracy are presented which validate the prospects of the proposed framework in future condition monitoring services.

Description: Early stage faults detection for machine health monitoring demands high level of fault classification accuracy under poor signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Vibration signal which is used for signature matching in case of abnormality detection and diagnosis, requires robust tools such as wavelet transform (WT) for time-frequency analysis. WT is specifically used to deal with nonstationary signals. In order to guarantee improved performance under poor SNR, this paper proposes a scheme for feature extraction based on fourth-order cumulant and stationary wavelet transform (FoCSWT). Higher order cumulants have the tendency to mitigate the impact of Gaussian noise. Fourth-order cumulant corresponds to the "peakedness" of the random distribution and the fault detection capability quantifies it as the most dominant cumulant among higher order statistics. Stationary wavelet transform is used to avoid down-sampling on the vibration data prior to feature extraction which gives better estimation of statistical parameters of the data distribution and gives performance enhancement in terms of fault classification accuracy. Simulation studies show that FoCSWT outperforms the existing techniques in terms of fault detection accuracies under poor SNR.

Description: Vibration signals, used for abnormality detection in machine health monitoring (MHM), exhibit significant variation with varying fault severity. This signal variation causes overlap among the features characterizing different types of faults, which results in severe performance degradation of the fault diagnostic model. In this paper, a wavelet based adaptive training set and feature selection (WATF) self-configuration scheme is presented, which selects the optimum wavelet decomposition level, and employs adaptive selection of the training set and features. Optimal wavelet decomposition level selection is such that the maximum fault signature-signal energy bands are achieved. The severity variant features, which could cause detrimental class overlap for MHM, are avoided using adaptive selection of the training set and features based on the location of a test data in feature space. WATF uses Support Vector Machines (SVM) to build the fault diagnostic model, and its performance and robustness has been tested with data having different severity levels. Comparative studies of WATF with eight existing fault diagnosis schemes show that, for publicly available data sets, WATF achieves higher fault detection accuracy, even when training and testing data sets belong to different severity levels.

Description: Wireless ad hoc networks are self-configurable distributed systems. One of the major problems in traditional wireless ad hoc networks is interference. The interference could be reduced using smart directional antennas. In this study, multibeam smart antennas have been used. When using this type of antenna, two nodes can communicate when both the sending and receiving beams are pointing towards each other. Also, a node can only communicate with a subset of nodes in its neighborhood depending on the number of beams and their beamwidth. Thus, the network topology needs to be dynamic in this case, and by controlling the topology network, performance can be increased. In this paper, we present a framework of a cross layer approach of topology control that interacts with the routing layer and MAC layer and meets the required QoS of different data streams. The approach is fully distributed. When the network is initialized, the algorithm builds an initial connected topology and the routing algorithm uses this topology to find paths for the current communications. Then, depending on the network scenario, current communications and the required QoS, the topology control layer changes the topology to optimize the network performance. This study concerns suburban ad hoc networks (SAHN) where nodes tend to be fixed and are aware of their locations.

Description: The Suburban Ad Hoc Network (SAHN) is a cooperative ad hoc wireless mesh network. Nodes are owned and operated by end-users without reliance on central infrastructure. It provides symmetrical bandwidth allowing peer-to-peer services and distributed servers. We minimize the use of scarce unlicensed RF spectrum supported by Smart Antenna technology. RF interference in such networks and techniques and strategies to reduce it are examined. Traffic is spread across multiple frequency channels, and multiple directional beams to achieve improved spatial re-use. We focus on the control of smart antennas rather than their design. By dynamically adjusting our network topology using Smart Antennas and dynamically re-routing current communications we optimize the network for its current traffic needs.

Description: Mining interesting and useful knowledge from the huge amount of data gathered in wireless sensor networks is a challenging task. Works reported in literature use support metric-based sensor association rule which employs the occurrence frequency of patterns as criteria. Such criteria may not be appropriate for finding significant patterns. Moreover, temporal regularity in occurrence behavior should be considered as another important measure for assessing the importance of patterns in WSNs. Frequent sensor patterns that occur after regular intervals is called regularly frequent sensor patterns. Even though mining regularly frequent sensor patterns from sensor data stream is extremely important in many real-time applications, no such algorithm has been proposed yet. In this paper, we propose a novel tree structure called Regularly Frequent Sensor Pattern-tree (RSP-tree) and an efficient mining approach for finding regularly frequent sensor patterns from WSNs. Extensive performance analyses show that our technique is time and memory efficient in finding regularly frequent sensor patterns.

Description: Soft handoff in WCDMA systems allows multi connection between the user and base stations during handoff, in contrast to single connection in hard handoff. But multi connection flexibility leads to a trade-off between quality of service for the user and the system downlink capacity. The heterogeneous wireless networks consist of WCDMA and WLAN systems, which operate at different frequency with no direct interference. Therefore, a vertical soft handoff between downlink shared channels from WCDMA and WLAN will not suffer similar side effects as the horizontal soft handoff in WCDMA systems. In this paper, we present an analytical framework for vertical soft handoff and propose a context-aware vertical soft handoff algorithm (CAVSH) for heterogeneous wireless networks. CAVSH considers four user and system context parameters such as user required bandwidth, user traffic cost, access network utilization, and signal to interference-and-noise ratio (SINR). The results show that the proposed CAVSH can provide the system with lower dropping probability, lower average cost to the user and higher throughput, as compared with vertical hard handoff.

Description: In this paper, we present an automated color transfer based video fusion method to attain real-time color night vision capability for night-time video surveillance. We utilize simple RGB Color transfer technique to fused pseudo colored video frames without conversion to any uncorrelated color space. We investigated that final color fusion results greatly depend on the selection of target color Image. Therefore, rather than using any arbitrary target color image based on mere general visual anticipation, we have automated target color image selection using structural similarity and color saturation. We further apply color enhancement to improve final appearance of color fused images. Subjective and objective quality evaluations greatly indicate the effectiveness of our color video fusion method for nighttime video surveillance applications.

Description: Increase in the number of coexisting networks in license free Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) band causes interferences for industrial automation, e.g., shop floors of manufacturing facilities. In order to ensure the reliability for automation networks, interference avoidance schemes are required. This paper proposes a novel Predefined Hopping Pattern (PHP) technique for frequency hopping in ISM band, which mitigates self-interferences and static interferers as well. This technique generates optimized frequency hopping sequences which ensure sufficient frequency diversity and frequency offset among the coexisting Bluetooth piconets and exploits transmission experiences for a particular frequency in eliminating interference. Simulation studies have shown that PHP has better collision avoidance rate than well known adaptive frequency hopping (AFH) and adaptive frequency rolling (AFR) schemes.

Description: Wireless sensor networks (WSNs), now-a-days, are deployed in environmental data collection as well as in critical event monitoring. Successful data collection requires reliability while reliable event detection necessitates timeliness. Simultaneous data gathering and event monitoring is not well studied in literature. In this paper, we propose a system model that works on homogeneous data gathering WSNs. When an event occurs, an event cluster with a different transmission channel is formed and both data gathering and event monitoring are performed at the same time. The proposed model has a novel routing strategy with a built-in congestion control technique to provide timely delivery of event data. Experimental results show that the proposed method performs better than known similar techniques in terms of reliable data gathering and reliable timely event monitoring. It also enhances the network lifetime significantly compared to other existing methods.

Description: Incipient fault detection in low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions requires robust features for accurate condition-based machine health monitoring. Accurate fault classification is positively linked to the quality of features of the faults. Therefore, there is a need to enhance the quality of the features before classification. This paper presents a novel vibration spectrum imaging (VSI) feature enhancement procedure for low SNR conditions. An artificial neural network (ANN) has been used as a fault classifier using these enhanced features of the faults. The normalized amplitudes of spectral contents of the quasi-stationary time vibration signals are transformed into spectral images. A 2-D averaging filter and binary image conversion, with appropriate threshold selection, are used to filter and enhance the images for the training and testing of the ANN classifier. The proposed novel VSI augments and provides the visual representation of the characteristic vibration spectral features in an image form. This provides enhanced spectral images for ANN training and thus leads to a highly robust fault classifier.

Description: Human actions are spatio-temporal visual events and recognizing human actions in different conditions is still a challenging computer vision problem. In this paper, we introduce a robust feature based space-time correlation filter, called Action-02MCF (0’zero-aliasing’ 2M’ Maximum Margin’) for recognizing human actions in video sequences. This filter combines (i) the sparsity of spatio-temporal feature space, (ii) generalization of maximum margin criteria, (iii) enhanced aliasing free localization performance of correlation filtering using (iv) rich context of maximally stable space-time interest points into a single classifier. Its rich multi-objective function provides robustness, generalization and recognition as a single package. Action-02MCF can simultaneously localize and classify actions of interest even in clutter and adverse imaging conditions. We evaluate the performance of our proposed filter for challenging human action datasets. Experimental results verify the performance potential of our action-filter compared to other correlation filtering based action recognition approaches. © Springer International Publishing AG 2016.

Description: Cultural competence is an important aspect of health service access and delivery in health promotion and community health. Although a number of frameworks and tools are available to assist health service organizations improve their services to diverse communities, there are few published studies describing organizational cultural competence assessments and the extent to which these tools facilitate cultural competence. This article addresses this gap by describing the development of a cultural competence assessment, intervention, and evaluation tool called the Cultural Competence Organizational Review (CORe) and its implementation in three community sector organizations. Baseline and follow-up staff surveys and document audits were conducted at each participating organization. Process data and organizational documentation were used to evaluate and monitor the experience of CORe within the organizations. Results at follow-up indicated an overall positive trend in organizational cultural competence at each organization in terms of both policy and practice. Organizations that are able to embed actions to improve organizational cultural competence within broader organizational plans increase the likelihood of sustainable changes to policies, procedures, and practice within the organization. The benefits and lessons learned from the implementation of CORe are discussed. © 2017, Society for Public Health Education.

Description: Continuous monitoring of patient's physiological signs has the potential to augment traditional medical practice, particularly in developing countries that have a shortage of healthcare professionals. However, continuously streamed data presents additional security, storage and retrieval challenges and further inhibits initiatives to integrate data to form electronic health record systems. Blockchain technologies enable data to be stored securely and inexpensively without recourse to a trusted authority. Blockchain technologies also promise to provide architectures for electronic health records that do not require huge government expenditure that challenge developing nations. However, Blockchain deployment, particularly with streamed data challenges existing Blockchain algorithms that take too long to place data in a block, and have no mechanism to determine whether every data point in every stream should be stored in such a secure way. This article presents an architecture that involves a Patient Agent, coordinating the insertion of continuous data streams into Blockchains to form an electronic health record.
