Description: The attraction sector’s ability to enhance service quality is fundamentally important to its future sustainability. Attempts to enhance performance within the sector have suffered from the lack of a standard instrument for measuring service quality perceptions. This study sought to address this issue by piloting an instrument designed to measure visitor levels of perceived service quality. The instrument was piloted on 133 visitors to four purpose built attractions in Victoria, Australia. Analysis of the data resulted in a purified 17-item instrument, called ATTRACTQUAL and proposed that two dimensions, interactions and outcomes, underlie attraction visitors’ perceptions of service quality.

Description: This paper examines the inputs of two different processes and the linkage between those processes. The processes examined in this paper are e-Teaching and e-Learning. Many conferences and journals are devoted to publishing on e-learning while in most cases they address the issues of e-teaching, which is a different process. In recent years Universities around the world are competing to take advantage of the e-learning benefits including its economic incentives. Furthermore, many academic institutions have embraced the e-learning philosophy until it became the objective. This phenomenon has motivated the authors to conduct a study to thoroughly examine e-learning as part of the overall learning process. In this paper the authors reflect on their experience in e-teaching/e-learning attempting to make the distinction clearer and define the relationship.

Description: The paper reports on a program that brings together what is known about active learning in design education, that is, learning by doing, and what is known about communities of practice to address a real concern - the lack of take up of Higher Degree by Research programs within in the discipline of design. The report Building Australia's Research Capacity Report (2008) highlights this problem, stating '...it is evident that postgraduate research is in direct competition with the workforce, particularly at the graduate and entry levels, in the current climate of low professional unemployment' (p.87). To meet such calls, Australian Universities have focused on increasing the completion rates of existing Higher Degree by Research candidates. This paper focuses on the role of honours programs as servig two purposes: first to increase the numbers of undergraduate students taking up Higher Degree by Research programs as a way of increasing the numbers of doctoral qualified workers, and second, to produce research literate honours graduates for industry. At the same time literature around research training identifies the vagaries associated with research (Barron & Zeegers, 2002) as one of the barriers faced by Higher Degree by Research students in their research training. This paper looks to understandings generated through communities of practice and Legitimate Peripheral Participation to argue for a model of honours and Higher Degree by Research training that address such vagaries. The model uses collaboration and working with industry and researchers to establish Active Learning experiences - participants with various levels of research expertise working alongside each other in research clusters on industry projects to experience how methods are employed and problems are addresses and solved. The model argues for a staged, deliberate process of drawing newcomers into a given professional field, where they work with increasing more experienced practitioners as a part of specific communities of practice until they themselves become proficient.

Description: Several different species of freshwater Bryozoa, belonging to the genera Plumatella, Rumarcanella and Fredericella, were detected within the Northern Mallee Pipeline (NMP) system in Victoria, Australia, that required definitive identification. These organisms produce asexual buds called statoblasts, with valves composed of sclerotised chitin that bear minute micro-ornamentations of considerable taxonomical significance. Imaging and analysis of these distinctive micro-ornamentations using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is often employed for species identification. Meticulous preparation of statoblast samples is therefore required that necessitates the removal of adhering debris, dehydration and drying - whilst mitigating specimen damage and distortion. This technical note describes an approach whereby each of these three steps have been individually designed to be as benign as possible, using mild detergent/sonication to remove debris, a gradual and gentle dehydration procedure using ethanol, and critical point drying. For the overall process, these methods are chosen to optimise control and to minimise the use of harsh and hazardous chemicals. © 2013 The Royal Society of New Zealand.

Description: Background: While agriculture has taken much environmental water in Australia's Murray-Darling Basin, agricultural expansion has resulted in a vast number of farm dams, almost three-quarters of a million in the Murray-Darling Basin alone. Methods: Over a summer we studied (1) waterbird abundance and species richness and (2) the influence of biophysical and landscape characteristics across 49 farm dams at a large mixed-enterprise farm in northern Victoria on the southern reach of the Murray-Darling Basin. Results: On average, dams were found to host 27.1 ± 71.1 individuals/ha and 1.8 ± 2.9 species per pond. Such densities are comparable to those on natural wetlands. Dam surface area and perimeter and amount of vegetation were positively and strongly correlated with the Rallidae density (birds/ha), but no other parameters were strongly correlated with any other functional group. The landscape in which the dams were embedded had a highly significant effect (p < 0.001) on the number of birds found on a dam. Conclusions: Our research needs to be complemented with further studies in other parts of the Basin and on other taxa, but given at our site they supported similar densities of individuals and species to natural wetlands, and given the fact that there are 710,539 farm dams in the Murray-Darling Basin, which hosts much of Australia's waterbird fauna, it is reasonable to suggest that farm dams are overlooked, and possibly very important, avian biodiversity hotspots. It also highlights the importance of a landscape setting, in which dams are situated, on the number of birds using the dams. © 2017 The Author(s).

Description: BACKGROUND: It is unclear whether the hypertriglyceridemic waist phenotype (HTWP) can be used to identify those at most risk of cardiometabolic disorders. OBJECTIVES: The utility of the HTWP as a useful predictor of cardiometabolic risk in youth stratified by body mass index was assessed. METHODS: Three hundred and eighty-seven children (12-17.5 years) were used within this cross-sectional study. Participants were classified as normal weight or overweight/obese according to the International Obesity Task Force criteria. The HTWP phenotype was defined as having a waist circumference >/=90th percentile for age and gender with concomitant triglyceride concentrations >/=1.24 mmol L(-1) . Cardiometabolic risk profiles were compared using MANCOVA. RESULTS: Normal weight participants with the HTWP had significantly higher levels of C-reactive protein 2.6 +/- 0.4 vs. 1.6 +/- 0.3 mg L(-1) (P < 0.05) and cardiometabolic risk scores (1.3 +/- 0.3 vs. -0.7 +/- 0.2 and 2.1 +/- 0.4 vs. -0.5 +/- 0.2; both P < 0.05) compared with those of a normal weight without the HTWP. Overweight/obese participants with the HTWP had significantly higher C-reactive protein levels (3.5 +/- 0.6 vs. 2.6 +/- 0.5; P < 0.05) as well as both cardiometabolic risk scores (1.6 +/- 0.6 vs. 0.9 +/- 0.2 and 2.2 +/- 0.6 vs. 0.8 +/- 0.2; both P < 0.001) when compared with overweight/obese participants without the HTWP. CONCLUSIONS: The HTWP may serve as a simple and clinically useful approach to identify youth at increased cardiometabolic risk.

Description: Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate the working capital management (WCM) practices adopted by Indian firms listed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE). Design/methodology/approach: Using a questionnaire, the authors gather data from 110 financial managers and use various statistical techniques to test for statistical significance. Findings: The evidence shows that the majority (54.5 percent) of sample firms follow a moderate approach in financing their activities, which involves a trade-off between liquidity and profitability. Respondents tend to use an informal approach for WCM and consider receivables management as the most important component of WCM. In terms of WCM monitoring and financial measures, respondents mainly consider the cash conversion cycle and net working capital. Indian firms tend to use centralized cash management and rely heavily on material requirement planning (MRP) and enterprise resource planning (ERP) for proper inventory management. Research limitations/implications: Tests involving firm size, foreign sales, and average age do not differ significantly between the NSE-listed firms and the sample firms. This evidence lessens concerns of non-response bias and the ability to generalize the findings to Indian firms. Originality/value: By updating and extending previous research on WCM, this study fills a gap in the literature by providing insights into practices adopted by Indian firms in managing WCM and its components. © 2017, © Emerald Publishing Limited.

Description: Central Queensland (CQ) University conducts a suite of postgraduate programs in maintenance management. There is an emphasis upon Work Integrated Learning, and the programs are delivered in a flexible mode by academics and lecturer-practitioners so that learners are provided with an authentic learning experience. The learners are mature aged, experienced practitioners who are either graduate engineers or trades qualified, working in the maintenance management area of their organisation. Study materials have been designed and developed through the collaboration and consultation with industry, university, and practitioner stakeholders to ensure the student's learning and the assessment of that learning is incorporated into the tasks and responsibilities of learners in their workplace. A blended learning delivery model includes the opportunity for students to attend a two day residential school. Description: This paper draws on qualitative interviews with young people to theorise the relationship between notions of responsibility and the process of intersubjectivity and recognition for young people experiencing homelessness. It is argued that homelessness as a cultural trope carries a symbolic burden, associated with notions of irresponsibility, passivity, and moral failure. The paper argues that for young people who are or have experienced homelessness, these associations must be reflexively negotiated in the course of managing their intersubjective ties to achieve the recognition as worthy subjects which is a condition of meaningful subjectivity. This recognition is achieved in cultures of sociability in the context of literal homelessness, although when some young people move out of literal homelessness, they seek intersubjective ties from new sources of recognition associated with symbolic capital that the young people themselves recognise. Part of this process is a definition of previous intersubjective ties which is characterised by notions of irresponsibility and moral failure. Furthermore, young people in this project reconstruct the notion of responsibility, allowing the experience of morally worthy intersubjective selves in the context of the kind of institutional dependence intrinsic to the experience of homelessness.

Description: The vegetation of Coonavitra area, Paroo Darling National Park (latitude 31°00’–32° 40’S and longitude 142°10’–144°25’E) in north western New South Wales was assessed using intensive quadrat sampling and mapped using extensive ground truthing and interpretation of aerial photograph and Landsat Thematic Mapper satellite images. In the survey 261 vascular plants species including 37 (14%) exotic species, from 50 families were recorded. Eighteen vegetation communities were identified and mapped, the most widespread being Casuarina pauper/Alectryon oleifolius low open woodland, Acacia loderi tall open shrubland, Flindersia maculosa low open woodland and Acacia aneura open-shrubland. Of particular significance are the extensive areas of Acacia loderi and Acacia melvillei tall open shrubland and one of the northernmost occurrences of Eucalyptus socialis tall open shrubland. Many of these communities have been impacted by a history of 150 years of pastoral use.

Description: Ballarat is best known as an exemplar mid-19th century Victorian gold rush city. It is located in the western region of the State of Victoria in Australia and is of state-wide importance being the largest inland city in the state and a major driver of regional growth and development. Ballarat is a city of communities, home to many diverse peoples, each contributing their own culture, ideas and aspirations to the city’s identity. Ballarat’s story is one of layered change over millions of years: the natural landscape formed 500 million years ago, whilst modern Indigenous people, the Wadawurrung and Dja Dja Wurrung, have deep connections to this ancestral country spanning back at least 50,000 years. Ballarat’s urban heritage and diverse community is more recent: it is one of the world’s most substantial and intact mid-19th century historic gold rush cities and one of the most important mass migrations of people during the search for gold. The intensity of this time is most evident in central Ballarat with the city’s urban form established during the first 20 years of the gold rush. Today, the city is considered the capital of Western Victoria and its key points of difference are its regional location and distinctive cultural identity. Ballarat is renowned for its intact historic streetscapes of public and commercial buildings, grand to humble housing, civic spaces, gardens and plantings. It is also acknowledged for its great lifestyle, significant cultural institutions and much loved calendar of festivals and events.

Description: The application of metabolomics to biological samples has been a key focus in systems biology research, which is aimed at the development of rapid diagnostic methods and the creation of personalized medicine. More recently, there has been a strong focus towards this approach applied to non-invasively acquired samples, such as saliva and exhaled breath. The analysis of these biological samples, in conjunction with other sample types and traditional diagnostic tests, has resulted in faster and more reliable characterization of a range of health disorders and diseases. As the sampling process involved in collecting exhaled breath and saliva is non-intrusive as well as comparatively low-cost and uses a series of widely accepted methods, it provides researchers with easy access to the metabolites secreted by the human body. Owing to its accuracy and rapid nature, metabolomic analysis of saliva and breath (known as salivaomics and breathomics, respectively) is a rapidly growing field and has shown potential to be effective in detecting and diagnosing the early stages of numerous diseases and infections in preclinical studies. This review discusses the various collection and analyses methods currently applied in two of the least used non-invasive sample types in metabolomics, specifically their application in salivaomics and breathomics research. Some of the salient research completed in this field to date is also assessed and discussed in order to provide a basis to advocate their use and possible future scientific directions. © 2016 by the authors; licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.
