Thermographic scanning of electrical installations is sometimes conducted as part of electrical safety audits. This scanning is mostly considered based on the present temperature identified on a particular device or location and according to a pre-specified temperature category. But in most of the cases the recommended temperature of the particular devices cannot be considered during temperature categorization. There are many electrical audits using Thermographic scanning and recommend solution based on normal category of temperature rather than manufacturer's suggestion or specified standard for particular electrical device. Now a days, thermographic scanning is being used in Readymade Garments (RMG) industries in Bangladesh in such simple way where details analysis are not in practice and hence exact recommendation is absent in reports. The importance of this topic is focused on the 4.2 million people working in more than 5,000 factories in Bangladesh, where 80% of the fire incident are caused by inappropriate electrical installation or short circuits (as per Fire Service and Civil Defense statistics of Bangladesh). Recently many violent industrial accidents caused death of more than 1,500 people in the last 3 years. Among these, majority of the incidents were due to unsafe electrical system and inappropriate maintenance. The paper will further explore the importance of thermal scanning on electrical devices and compare the temperature considering manufacturer's recommendation for identifying system errors. The paper is written based on previously published recommendations and based on conducting an experimental sample audit aimed to develop a thermography based auditing standard. Based on the statistical and systematic analysis of the obtained data (e.g. temperature values, visual abnormalities, comparative differences) the paper will further discuss the possible area(s) that can be improved by introducing the thermal reports for the safety audits. This paper is aimed to develop an auditing structure proposed to implement identified areas within a standard electrical safety audit process.

Doubly Fed Induction Generators (DFIGs) are nowadays extensively used in variable speed wind power plants due to their advantages that include reduced converter rating, low cost, reduced losses with an improved efficiency, easy implementation of power factor correction schemes, variable speed operation and four quadrants active and reactive power control capabilities. On the other hand, DFIG sensitivity to grid disturbances, especially for the voltage dip represents the main disadvantage of the equipment. This paper presents the application of superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) unit to improve the overall performance of a DFIG-based wind energy conversion systems (WECS). Two control approaches namely; hysteresis current controller (HCC) along with proportional integral (PI) controller and a fuzzy logic (FL) controller for the SMES unit are presented and compared. Various grid codes are used to examine the capability of the two proposed controllers to improve the low voltage ride through (LVRT) capability of the DFIG to maintain the wind turbine connection to the grid through fault durations.

Limited transmission capacity may lead to wind curtailment during periods of high availability of wind. This paper presents an improved methodology to quantify the latent scheduling capacity of a power system taking into account stochastic variation in line-thermal rating, intermittency of wind, and mitigating the risk of network congestion associated with high penetration of wind. The approach is aimed at strategic planning of power systems in the context of power systems with short to medium length lines with a priori known unit commitment decisions and uses stochastic optimization with a two stage recourse action. Results suggest that a considerable level of wind penetration is possible with dynamic line ratings, without adversely affecting the risk of network congestion.

Traffic systems and signals are used to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, increase travel time consistency and ensure safety of road users. Malicious interruption or manipulation of traffic signals may cause disastrous instants including huge delays, financial loss and loss of lives. Intrusion into traffic signals by hackers can create such interruption whose consequences will only increase with the introduction of driverless vehicles. Recently, many traffic signals across the world are reported to have intruded, highlighting the importance of accurate detection. To reduce the impact of an intrusion, in this paper, we introduce an intrusion detection technique using the flow rate and phase time of a traffic signal as evidential information to detect the presence of an intrusion. The information received from flow rate and phase time are fused with the Dempster Shaffer (DS) theory. Historical data are used to create the probability mass functions for both flow rate and phase time. We also developed a simulation model using a traffic simulator, namely SUMO for many types of real traffic situations including intrusion. The performance of the proposed Intrusion Detection System (IDS) is appraised with normal traffic condition and induced intrusions. Simulated results show our proposed system can successfully detect intruded traffic signals from normal signals with significantly high accuracy (above 91%).

In this paper, we present an automated color transfer based video fusion method to attain real-time color night vision capability for night-time video surveillance. We utilize simple RGB Color transfer technique to fused pseudo colored video frames without conversion to any uncorrelated color space. We investigated that final color fusion results greatly depend on the selection of target color Image. Therefore, rather than using any arbitrary target color image based on mere general visual anticipation, we have automated target color image selection using structural similarity and color saturation. We further apply color enhancement to improve final appearance of color fused images. Subjective and objective quality evaluations greatly indicate the effectiveness of our color video fusion method for nighttime video surveillance applications.

To protect users and organization we are proposing an enhanced RFID mutual authentication scheme. In this protocol we use authentication based on shared unique parameters as a method to protect privacy. This protocol will be capable of handling forward and backward security, rouge reader better than existing protocols. In our new scheme we involved RFID reader's hardware ID in addition to other shared secret information which uses hash to protect users and industries privacy. This paper reports on the literature reviewed for a study on how a pedagogy of place is cultivated within garden experiences. There is limited research about the use of school gardens as an educational tool and the specific pedagogies that support learning in this context. A number of themes emerge from various bodies of literature that provide a conceptual framework for the study of food garden pedagogies. These themes include placebased education, ecological literary, and nature as teacher. It is useful to think about primary school gardens in the light of this literature because it helps frame a research question for a study into how pedagogies of place can be cultivated within food gardens. Existing contention based nonpersistent medium access control protocols in Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) do not perform well in high contention. Their performances are affected by occurrence of collision due to uniform probability distribution in choosing Time Slot (TS) during backoff period. To address this issue nonuniform probability distribution was proposed. However success rate still drops for higher number of contenders. In this paper we propose CSMA/s (Collision Sense Multiple Access /per Slot based), a new approach in nonuniform contender-aware probability distribution for choosing TS in the backoff period. Rather than taking a premeditated fixed value for contender population size, our proposed scheme embeds neighborhood population size into its bedrock to automatically converge to the actual number of contenders which enables the contender to adaptively choose TS in the backoff period for reducing collision. This method produces better success rate and lower latency for even very high number of contenders.

Collision Sense Multiple Access (CSMA) has been preferred to Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) as medium access scheme for Wireless Multimedia Sensor Network (WMSN) in the scenarios where the traffic is bursty in nature and multiple consecutive and contiguous packets generated from the same collision neighborhood need to be sent. Protocols based on nonuniform probability distribution do not perform well in high contention and heterogeneous traffic scenarios due to nonadaptive nature to contention neighborhood. In this paper we have proposed a scheme to adapt the Contention Window (CW) size according to the collision neighborhood population complying with the application specific latency and success probability constraints. This scheme shows improved performance compared with SIFT, a stereotype of non-uniform probability based CSMA protocol and can be deployed with any CSMA-CA (CSMA with Collision Avoidance) based backoff algorithm

In emerging 3D video coding, depth has significant importance in view synthesis, scene analysis, and 3D object reconstruction. Depth images can be characterized by sharp edges and smooth large regions. Most of the existing depth coding techniques use intra-coding mode and try to preserve edges explicitly with approximated edge modelling. However, edges can be implicitly preserved as long as the transformation is avoided. In this paper, we have demonstrated that inherent edge preserving encoding of inter-coded block residuals, uniformly quantized at pixel domain using motion data from associated texture components, is more efficient than explicitly edge preserving intra-coding techniques. Experimental results show that the proposed technique have achieved superior image quality of synthesized views against the new 3D-HEVC standard. Lossless applications of the proposed technique has achieved on average 66% and 23% bit-rate savings against 3D-HEVC with negligible quantization and perceptually unnoticeable view synthesis, respectively.

This paper describes an ALTC (Australian Learning and Teaching Council) funded project, which addresses the development of students‟ report writing skills in science and engineering across the undergraduate years. The WRiSE project grew out of concerns about student performance in written assessments, as well as the need to improve graduate writing emphasised by employers and government. The project approach involved a collaborative team across two institutions. The team comprised language and learning specialists and discipline staff who developed learning materials and technical and eLearning specialists who converted these into online materials. Development followed a feedback spiral, which also involved student users. WRiSE is an integrated, freely available, student centred, online learning environment for report writing in nine discipline areas within science and engineering. In each discipline area, interactive learning materials have been developed to address both the product and process of report writing, as well as the concepts and content behind the reports students have to write. WRiSE is designed to meet the needs of students from diverse backgrounds who have had varying writing experiences as it can be accessed according to student needs. Evaluation of WRiSE has been positive in the areas of user friendliness and improved understanding and confidence in report writing. Those students who used WRiSE have attained significantly higher grades in their reports than students who did not use WRiSE.

Cascaded multilevel inverters (MLI) have recently received much attention due to its ability to perform well in various high voltage and high power applications with high efficiency. Cascaded inverters are able to generate high voltage output by utilizing a number of low voltage DC supplies and switches of low blocking voltage rating, which make cascaded MLI a cost effective choice for high voltage/power applications. The main drawback of cascaded MLI is the requirement of large number of isolated DC sources particularly, for three phase applications where the number of required input DC sources is three times that of single phase structure. In addition to the extra cost it will incur, the use of large number of DC supplies within the inverter will significantly increase its physical size, and complicate the management of such large number of DC sources. This paper presents a new topology for three phase MLI with a minimum number of input DC supplies. Symmetric and asymmetric input DC supply modes are developed for the proposed topology. Simulation and experimental results are provided to assess the performance of the proposed MLI topology.

A gene regulatory network (GRN) represents a collection of genes, connected via regulatory interactions. Reverse engineering GRNs is a challenging problem in systems biology. Various models have been proposed for modeling GRNs. However, many of these models lack the capability to explain the molecular mechanisms underlying the biological process. Michaelis-Menten kinetics can be used to model the biomolecular mechanisms and is a widely used non-linear approach to represent biochemical systems. However, the model in its current form is not suitable for reverse engineering biological systems. In this paper, based on Michaelis-Menten kinetics, we develop a new model to reverse engineer GRNs. The parameter estimation is formulated as an optimization problem which is solved by adapting trigonometric differential evolution (TDE), a variant of differential evolution (DE). The model is applied for reconstructing both in silico and in vivo networks. The results are promising and as the model is fully biologically relevant, it provides a new perspective for accurate GRN inference.
