  • Description: The fiftieth anniversary of Sovereign Hill, an iconic Australian tourism destination, provides a key point to consider the curatorial and historical perspectives of the museum’s past. This article considers its role and place as a regional community institution and its approach to telling the local, national, and international histories of the gold rush era of the mid-nineteenth century. Since opening in 1970, Sovereign Hill has provided millions of visitors with a living window onto the history of the Australian gold rushes, particularly the longitudinal impact of gold discoveries on the regional city of Ballarat. The article analyses how Sovereign Hill has sought to manage the ongoing dynamic tension between curatorial and historical interpretation with the commercial imperatives of being a premier heritage tourism destination, from the 1970s down to the era of COVID-19. © 2022 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

  • Description: Much of the focus of destination planning research to date has been on major cities, often with populations of one million or more. There is however a growing emphasis on planning for the sustainable development of cities outside the larger metropolitan hubs, with a view to attracting tourists and building liveable communities. The challenge for these regional places is to reinvent themselves and create new destination images, while maintaining a high quality of life for residents. The case study of Bendigo (an inland regional city in central Victoria, Australia, with a population of nearly 100,000) illustrates some of the issues that these destinations need to grapple with in connection with tourism planning. The discovery of a Chinese kiln dating back to the gold rushes of the 19th century became a catalyst for the local government council to develop a marketing and interpretation plan for a Chinese Heritage Precinct, encompassing various heritage assets with a Chinese association. This case study examines both the process and outcomes of this strategic plan. The article highlights the need for planning processes that emphasize the importance of engaging with a diverse group of stakeholders, including government, community organizations and private interests, to gain their input into and support of the process. It also explores the benefits of using an external research team to assist the destination with gaining a deeper understanding of its tourism potential, including key markets and prioritization of limited resources for tourism development.

  • Description: Taking Broken Hill as an exemplar of Australian, indeed global, labour heritage, this article, analyses the survival of labour heritage and union practices in the town that continues to the present. It examines the interpretation of successive layers of industrial and labour history as a means of revealing a culturally dynamic and enduring community with close connections to its built heritage. The authors challenge the application of two-dimensional and static models of heritage interpretations too often applied to contested heritage sites. The authors argue that Broken Hill is a community whose determined social and industrial character and distinct built environment has transcended changing patterns of investment and economic decline.

  • Description: Purpose: Over a century of state-sponsored construction of monuments, historic mythmaking and nationalist framings of WWI has ensured that it has become notoriously difficult to present the heritage of the Great War in an inclusive and non-selective way. In this paper the authors present a strategy and technology-driven solutions to overcome the selective heritage curation of modern conflict. Design/methodology/approach: Building on a suite of tools, applications and cultural heritage management plans developed by the In Flanders Fields Museum (IFFM), this paper explores the challenges of preserving and curating conflict heritage. The authors investigate the philosophy, cultural heritage management strategies and exhibitions used to curate the heritage of the Ypres Salient (Belgium). Findings: The paper argues that historical aerial photographs integrated in multimedia exhibits present themselves as a fascinating source bringing the landscape within the walls of the museum. Mobile augmented reality (AR) applications developed by the museum go one step beyond and bring museum techniques to the landscape. Research limitations/implications: This paper presents a strategy to present, manage and curate the entirety of conflict heritage from the modern period. Faced with growing politicisation and memorialisation of modern conflict, it is extremely important that inclusive heritage management and curation is insured. The reflections on different curatorial techniques used by the IFFM can contribute globally towards a better heritage engagement. Practical implications: An innovative and meaningful framework enables a more historically nuanced visitor experience to key heritage sites throughout the Ypres Salient. Social implications: Ensuring a non-selective heritage experience is especially pressing today. Over the past century canonised and national narratives have prescribed our understanding of the First World War across Europe and beyond. Originality/value: Adopting a critical stance towards the proliferation in AR apps and applying theories from anthropology and phenomenology has been developed combining AR with arboreal landscape relics. © 2020, Emerald Publishing Limited.

  • Description: The land diving ritual or naghol of South Pentecost Vanuatu is living proof of how tourism heightens community tensions when traditional culture is commercialised. Kastom, an overarching framework under which traditional culture is defined, is predicated on an agenda of reinforcing tradition. However, tourism imposes transformation and responds to contemporary livelihood priorities of traditional peoples. The increasing precariousness of customary livelihoods and questions over its present-day relevance has made inimitable aspects of traditional culture increasingly marketable. Reconciling the nature of naghol commercialisation and overcoming the constraints of traditional patriarchal authorities (“big-men”) and an entrenched tourism industry network is critical if widespread benefit and lasting legacies for the “grassroots” are to be realised.

  • Description: This article is a transnational comparative discussion that interrogates responses, particularly formal policy frameworks, to addressing racial vilification in sport. Themes interrogated include racism in sport, sport as an agent for social change, diversity in sport, sport and community harmony, sport and ethnicity, and sport and education. Emphasis is placed on the importance of education as a plank in formal policy responses to addressing on- and off-field racism in elite sport. The article also examines how education is important in enabling greater social participation among groups.   • Description: Roots tourism and diaspora travel are inextricably aligned and embody more than just another avenue for the expansion of tourism. This article, using Vanuatu as the context, argues that roots tourism has far broader implications for diaspora, especially in so far as geopolitical relationships between colonial powers and their former outposts are concerned. The return sojourns of Australia’s South Sea Islander diaspora are used in this article to highlight the phenomenon of roots tourism. The circumstances surrounding the arrival of the first islanders during what became known as the blackbirding era, beginning in the 1860s through to the early 1900s, is subject to contestation as to whether this constituted free or forced labor. Such narratives are common among diaspora when evaluating the legacy of colonialism, particularly when the specter of exploitation and mistreatment resonates. Roots tourism and the travel of diaspora are aimed at reconciling the ensuing questions of identity, culture, and place. This article argues that roots tourism offers personal relief and restitution as well as contributes to broader sociopolitical advancement between the descendants of the colonized and present-day institutions.

  • Description: The view of Pacific island countries (PICs) as paradise has persisted since the arrival of Europeans over two centuries ago (Daws, 1980; Connell, 2003). Juxtaposed against utopian ideals is the reality that island countries in the region labour under a multiplicity of serious threats including climate change, economic vulnerability, political upheaval and persistent underdevelopment. Yet the paradise narrative endures in the imaginings of people and place, most notably through tourism destination marketing that constructs and manipulates place image. Associated with this has been the attendant fetishising of islanders as stereotypical noble or ignoble savages (Campbell, 1980; Fry, 1996), or their infantilisation as congenial, subaltern hosts, reinforcing notions of Pacific island communities as a latter-day Shangri-La in the Pacific (Douglas, 1997). In stark contrast, PIC prehistory suggests that islanders had enormous resilience, ingenuity, fierce warrior cultures and a reputation as seafarers of enormous competence and sophistication - attributes far removed from the docile and indigent exemplifications of recent times.

  • Description: If, as according to Robin (2015: online), “islands are idealised ecological worlds, the Edens of a fallen planet’”, the rationale underpinning tourism expansion should acknowledge MacLeod’s (2013) notion of “cultural realignment” that calls for optimal and resilient encounters. This introductory article to the subsequent theme section of the journal on sustainable tourism acts as a bridge toward the development of emergent themes that describe how island peoples adapt and respond in localised cultural islandscapes as a consequence of tourism expansion. The links between cultural alignment and social-ecological resilience are clear and the principal and overarching question posed in this introductory article is: To what extent are islandscapes resilient to rapidly changing utilities, significances and ways of life wrought by tourism expansion? The vulnerabilityresilience duality remains firmly entrenched in the discourse on islands where tourism has become prominent, and although tourism provides some resiliency, overall, islandscapes remain subject to externally driven fast and slow change that exercises an overwhelming influence. Islander agency will likely remain subject to the fluctuations in the demands of the tourism supply chain. Therefore, tourism as a standalone focus of islands is a high-risk proposition, especially in contexts where externally driven change is likely to intensify.
