In software engineering, the re-use concept is a design principle that improves efficency, quality and maintainability by ensuring that software artifacts are developed once and re-used may times. In an analogous way, a group's reasoning can be imagined to be re-used by that or another group to enhance efficiency, transparency and consistency in decison-making. However, the re-use of reasoning is difficult to achieve because group reasoning cannot easily be captured and the way in which a group reasoning artifact is subsequently used is not obvious. This chapter explores the case for the re-use of community reasoning and concludes that individuals can benefit from a representation of a previous groups's coalesced reasoning to be modeled and the scheme to represent the reasoning have been selected to suit the task. The authors contend that specifying the future community like to re-use the reasoning, called the intended audience, informs a decision regarding whether an exercise aimed at coalescing a group's reasoning is best performed verbally, in writing or with the use of more structured schemes such as Argument visualization.

With the pragmatic realization of computing as a utility, Cloud Computing has recently emerged as a highly successful alternative IT paradigm. Cloud providers are deploying large-scale data centers across the globe to meet the Cloud customers’ compute, storage, and network resource demands. Efficiency and scalability of these data centers, as well as the performance of the hosted applications’ highly depend on the allocations of the data center resources. Very recently, network-aware Virtual Machine (VM) placement and migration is developing as a very promising technique for the optimization of compute-network resource utilization, energy consumption, and network traffic minimization. This chapter presents the relevant background information and a detailed taxonomy that characterizes and classifies the various components of VM placement and migration techniques, as well as an elaborate survey and comparative analysis of the state of the art techniques. Besides highlighting the various aspects and insights of the network-aware VM placement and migration strategies and algorithms proposed by the research community, the survey further identifies the benefits and limitations of the existing techniques and discusses on the future research directions.

Most societies have their scars of history resulting from involvement in war and civil unrest or adherence to belief systems based on intolerance, racial discrimination or ethnic hostilities. A range of places, sites and institutions represent the legacy of these painful periods: massacre and genocide sites, places related to prisoners of war, civil and political prisons, and places of 'benevolent' internment such as leper colonies and lunatic asylums. These sites bring shame upon us now for the cruelty and ultimate futility of the events that occurred within them and the ideologies they represented. Increasingly, however, they are now being regarded as 'heritage sites', a far cry from the view of heritage that prevailed a generation ago when we were almost entirely concerned with protecting the great and beautiful creations of the past: reflections of the creative genius of humanitiy rather than the reverse - the destructive and cruel side of history. Why has this shift occurred, and what implications does it have for professionals practising in the heritage field? In what ways is this a 'difficult' heritage to deal with?

There is a large part of south-east Australia which has a fascinating history that deserves a wider audience. This collection explores the theme of the region's environmental history, and in particular how societies related to it and perceived it over time. Looking through the lens of multiple authors as well as different industries, locations and perspectives, we build up a picture of a complicated relationship to the natural world, which changes over time. The collection starts from the premise that history can tell us much about our evolving relationships to the earth and its ecosystems. We consider the tensions which exist between the earth - by which we mean the natural environment in its broadest sense - and human industry, highlighting the complex and diverse historical relationships between society and the environment. The term 'industry' refers in this context to the ways of earning a living that were established in the region from mining through to pastoralism and fishing, but industry can also be an adjective, referring to the act:iVe way in whichpeople engaged with their environments. The Gippsland region in south-east ictoria, with all its diversity and fascinating history, offers an ideal case study of this interaction between humans and their natural surroundings. This chapter explores awareness and compassion as essential elements in spiritual cultivation. Of the education of awareness, it describes the ideas of Aldous Huxley and J. Krishnamurthi as well as the Buddha’s teachings on mindfulness. The practice of awareness would reveal a holistic experience and multiple dimensions of reality. This chapter briefly describes the author’s view of “the five dimensions of reality” that include dimensions from the surface to the deepest, infinite reality. Drawing on Eastern perspectives, it explains that “pure awareness” is identical with infinite reality and that “great compassion” emerges as a manifestation of pure awareness. In addition, as for cultivating compassion, this chapter explores such concepts as the Four Immeasurable Minds, bodhichitta, bodhisattva, and also the mind training called lojong in Tibetan Buddhism. Finally, it suggests a vision of “the education of enlightenment,” in which both awareness and compassion are of central importance.

This introductory chapter seeks, through a broad-brush analysis of a wide range of international research and data, to provide context for our book. It consists of four sections. The first sets the broad intentions and the main source of information for the two parts of our book that follow, including some limitations. The second section seeks to make explicit our interest in focusing mainly on men, particularly those men beyond paid work. The third section teases out some of our theoretical presuppositions about the process, purposes and value of learning that men experience. The fourth explains our reasons for overtly including and emphasising the seldom-theorised link between men’s learning and wellbeing. In its totality, this introductory chapter provides an outline of our equity and evidence-based case for acknowledging worldwide changes and trends that have made this book timely, particularly for men not in paid work, including a ‘big picture’ view of men learning through life in international settings. It begins to delineate a range of social and economic factors, including the global financial crisis and population ageing, that have led to an increase in the proportion of men not in paid work in most developed nations. This increase has been accompanied by a decrease in many nations in the proportion of young men completing post-school qualifications

For individuals interested in contemporary physical education and sports coaching practices, the well-known saying, 'may you live in interesting times' (sometimes referred to as the Chinese curse) will hold some resonance. As debate occurs about the very nature of what constitutes physical education and sports coaching, and 'which' knowledge should be privileged through pedagogical encounters, we do live in interesting times characterised by profound social and cultural changes (Wright, Macdonald and Burrows 2004). For some, these changes have produced professional working lives that are extremely fast-paced and time-poor. With many commercial enterprises claiming to offer 'innovative' and 'cutting-edge' practical solutions and 'quick fixes' for highly complex problems, as professionals we are now required to become critical consumer of what others have termed the global information explosion (Wright et. al. 2004). In relation to physical education and coaching we believe that in order to be effective critical consumers, 'context' matters and as such, we need local, nuanced examples of how various teaching coaching approaches are applied to consider their relevance for the issues we face in our own practice.
