Description: "Back injuries have consistently been the most common types of injuries suffered by people at work. They have been a significant worker injury problem in most, if not all, industrialised countries for many years and manual handling has long been established as a significant task related back injury causal factor.[...] This research project established that the manufacturers of the jet airlines used by the airlines in this study had not previously been acquainted with the issue of baggage handler back injuries.[...] This study also canvassed the opinion of airline safety professionals and airline baggage handlers concerning baggage handling tasks and working environment related causal factors. [...] A major focus of this research project was also to measure the effect of ACE and Sliding Carpet, two commercially available retro-fit baggage systems, on the risk of back injuries to baggage handlers stacking baggage within Boeing B737 narrow-body aircraft."

Description: Purpose--The purpose of this paper is to identify latent variables that explain green workplace attitudes, behaviours and practices. Design/methodology/approach--Following a resource base view, a HRM-driven green workforce may provide competitive advantage. Workforce assessment here may take place at the employee level using environment-focussed measures including ability, motivation and opportunity (AMO). To test this proposition, a usable sample, following deletion of multivariate outliers, comprised 371 employees across three industry sectors. Participants self-reported for 26 items concerning perceptions related to environmental consciousness, organisational roles, and knowledge. Findings/ Results--Exploratory factor analysis revealed a four factor structure explaining green workplace attitudes, behaviours and practices: environmental knowledge environmental workplace AMO global environmental attitudes, and organisation and the environment. Originality/value--The study provides a practical and parsimonious diagnostic tool to facilitate HRM-led development to engender sustainable environmental attitudes and practices within the workforce with implications for future research directions discussed. Description: This study investigated whether self-reported willingness to emotionally manipulate (EM) day-to-day and willingness to manipulate at work are related constructs, by analysing the factor structures and relationships of the Trait EM Willingness in General and Work Scale, as well as considering gender effects. Respondents (567 employees 365 females, 199 males, 3 other) were asked how often they engaged in various manipulative behaviours in day-to-day and work contexts. Exploratory and Confirmatory factor analyses analysed split halves of the responses. Three factors emerged: Work-Related Malicious EM Willingness, General Malicious EM Willingness, and Disingenuousness (items reflecting insincerity and deceit), demonstrating a contextual influence on malicious EM. The three-factor structure fitted the data well and was reliable, however, discriminant validity was not evident as Work-Related and General Malicious EM Willingness were highly correlated. The correlations demonstrate the trait-like consistency of malicious manipulation. The model achieved better fit for the male data, indicating the superiority of items at measuring EM in males. Endorsement of malicious EM at work was higher in males, consistent with the masculine-agentic and feminine-communal traits in social role theory. These findings add to understanding of the dark side of emotion, and reveal another layer of complexity to this problematic work behaviour. •Explores nature of emotional manipulation willingness at work and in daily life.•Two types of EM Willingness were identified: malicious and disingenuousness.•Malicious EM appears to be influenced by context of workplace.•The three-factor model of EM achieved better fit for the male data.•People at work may use a variety of deceptive techniques to achieve their goals.

Description: Considering the enormous changes in work practices and associated training required to address the needs of new practices, there has been very little research undertaken that attempts to describe how workers perceive these changes. This paper reports on the findings of 40 participants aged over 40 years of age, who were interviewed and observed to obtain data concerning their conceptions of work with regard to the changes occurring around them. The participants were from a medical service and an engineering organisation. The data were analysed qualitatively to investigate workers' conceptions of work. Results indicate four hierarchical conceptions of work, with the distribution of the participants' conceptions more towards the lower levels. The conceptions provide baseline data to understand workers' behaviour in light of current changes in work practices.

Description: In this article, we discuss the application of a data analysis method used in a feminist study that explored the working world of nursing unit managers in Australia. The decision to use a voice-centered relational approach to the data was based on a desire to delve into the working world of nursing unit managers and uncover the layers within the narratives that specifically related to their perceptions of themselves, their world, and the context in which they work. Throughout this article, the focus is on how this method was applied to uncover multiple layers of meaning within the data, rather than on the researchers' and participants' roles in the coconstruction of interview data. An excerpt from an interview transcript is used to illustrate how the stories of the participants were explored using this method.

Description: Field education placements permit social work students to gain practical experience employing the knowledge and skills they acquired in the classroom. Access to field education placements is dependent upon placement interviews during which candidates have to display their professional and personal suitability. Placement interviews are challenging for all students. For international students, they are particularly challenging as they represent a litmus test as to whether they have achieved a sufficient degree of cultural adaptation. To date, little attention has been paid to the way placement interviews are experienced by international students. This article addresses this gap. The article is based on a qualitative study involving semi-structured, in-depth interviews with five international students focusing on the way placement interviews were experienced, how students felt prepared for them, and the degree to which language proficiency, cultural difference, social connectedness, discrimination, and Australian workplace culture represented a challenge. The findings suggest that international students need be to better informed about opportunities associated with field placement and the often implicit requirements and expectations associated with it. The authors argue that they would benefit from targeted educational resources ranging from English language tuition to interview role play.
