Implicit concept mapping : A computerized tool for knowledge assessment in undergraduate psychology

Description: The study continued validating the computerised method of implicit concept mapping (Aidman & Egan, 1998), while extending it from assessing the map's structural properties to content-based expert evaluation. The on-line concept mapping task (Aidman & Egan, 1998) was modified to elicit similarity / contrast judgements for a set of basic personality concepts, in a group of 65 introductory psychology students. The resulting individual concept proximity matrices were scored for complexity and internal consistency, as well as individually factor- and cluster analysed. Hierarchical cluster tree and un-rotated factorial representations were generated for each individual map. Students were asked to interpret their own cluster trees and factor plots by naming the clusters and factor axes (a brief statement accompanying the name was allowed). Three independent experts (lecturers in the subject) rated the clarity and accuracy of these interpretations, as well as the soundness of cluster trees and the factorial representations themselves. These data were compared with the overall grade the students had obtained in the Introductory Psychology course immediately prior to participating in the study. Internal consistency and complexity of students' implicit concept maps produced only crude associations with their course achievement. The expert ratings of cluster- and factorial representations of the maps, especially expert ratings of students' own interpretations of their maps, showed a more refined association with course achievement, thus confirming that structural assessment of the implicit maps needs to be complemented by their content-based evaluation in order to achieve a more accurate estimate of the learner's level of expertise in the subject.

The attitudes of Australian heterosexual university students towards the suicide of gay, lesbian and heterosexual peers

Description: This study sought to examine the attitudes of heterosexual university students to peer suicide when that peer was gay, lesbian, or heterosexual. University students (n = 206) completed several questionnaires, including The Suicide Attitude Vignette Experience. Results indicated that the suicide act was seen as more justified, acceptable, and necessary when the adolescent was gay or lesbian. Further, gay and lesbian youth suicide victims were shown significantly less empathy than heterosexual suicide victims. Participants' level of homophobia was found to be a significant predictor of attitudes toward gay and lesbian youth suicide. Results indicate that the peer group of gay and lesbian youth is unsupportive of their sexual orientation, and these attitudes may be an additional risk factor for gay and lesbian youth suicide.

Interprofessional simulation of birth in a non-maternity setting for pre-professional students

Description: Background Simulation-based learning is an approach recommended for teaching undergraduate health professionals. There is a scarcity of research around interprofessional simulation training for pre-professional students in obstetric emergencies that occur prior to arrival at the maternity ward. Objectives The primary aims of the study were to examine whether an interprofessional team-based simulated birth scenario would improve undergraduate paramedic, nursing, and midwifery students' self-efficacy scores and clinical knowledge when managing birth in an unplanned location. The secondary aim was to assess students' satisfaction with the newly developed interprofessional simulation. Design Quasi-experimental descriptive study with repeated measures. Setting Simulated hospital emergency department. Participants Final year undergraduate paramedic, nursing, and midwifery students. Methods Interprofessional teams of five students managed a simulated unplanned vaginal birth, followed by debriefing. Students completed a satisfaction with simulation survey. Serial surveys of clinical knowledge and self-efficacy were conducted at three time points. Results Twenty-four students participated in one of five simulation scenarios. Overall, students' self-efficacy and confidence in ability to achieve a successful birth outcome was significantly improved at one month (p < 0.001) with a magnitude of increase (effect) of 40% (r = 0.71) and remained so after a further three months. Clinical knowledge was significantly increased in only one of three student groups: nursing (p = 0.04; r = 0.311). Students' satisfaction with the simulation experience was high (M = 4.65 / 5). Conclusions Results from this study indicate that an interprofessional simulation of a birth in an unplanned setting can improve undergraduate paramedic, nursing and midwifery students' confidence working in an interprofessional team. There was a significant improvement in clinical knowledge of the nursing students (who had least content about managing birth in their program). All students were highly satisfied with the interprofessional simulation experience simulation. © 2017 Elsevier Ltd

Description: The aim of this study was to examine possible relationships between religious/spiritual well-being (RSWB), the Big Five personality factors, and stress coping strategies among Bosnian young adults. Therefore, a first Bosnian translation of the Multidimensional Inventory of Religious/Spiritual Well-being was applied on a sample of 290 (181 females) Bosnian undergraduate students. RSWB dimensions such as hope, forgiveness, or general religiosity were found to be substantially related with more favorable personality dimensions as well as with more adequate stress coping. As a conclusion RSWB dimensions were confirmed as being an important resource for mental health for this sample of Bosnian adolescents.
