Description: This study examines the determinants of turnover intentions of off farm migrant workers, using data collected from China’s Jiangsu Province. Turnover intention is posited to be a function of demographic/human capital characteristics, job characteristics and job satisfaction. We find that higher levels of education have a positive effect on reported turnover intentions, while higher income and job satisfaction have a negative effect on turnover intentions. To the extent turnover intentions represent a good proxy for actual turnover, the results can be viewed as providing reliable predictors of job mobility among off farm migrant workers at a time when there is a growing shortage of such workers in China’s coastal provinces.

Description: Introduction: COVID-19 has not only affected the physical health of people but it has also had a major impact on their mental health. Objective: To investigate the nursing, midwifery, and operating room students’ mental health and intention to leave during COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at the nursing and midwifery school of Tabriz, Iran. Over a period of three months (February–May 2021) and through random sampling, 284 students were selected. The research tool consisted of three parts including demographic information, Depression Anxiety Stress scales, and a questionnaire on intention to leave. Results: More than 20% of the students experienced some degrees of depression, anxiety, and stress. Nearly one-third of participants mentioned a high level of intention to leave. Nursing students had a higher level of a turnover tendency than other students (p =.004). Male students and who experienced moderate to high level of depression displayed greater intention to leave (p =.005). Conclusion: Students suffered from some degrees of stress, anxiety, and depression during the COVID-19, and it strengthened the participants’ intention to leave. Relevant authorities are recommended to improve mental health of the students by providing psychological counseling sessions, reducing their direct contact with patients, and providing personal protective equipment. © The Author(s) 2022.

Description: BACKGROUND: The call centre industry has developed a reputation for generating a highly stressful work environment with high absenteeism and turnover rates. Research has identified role ambiguity, role conflict, role overload, and work-family conflict as common stressors in other settings. Call centre research has additionally identified performance monitoring, job design and job opportunities as call centre specific stressors. OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: This study investigated the impact of the identified stressors on burnout, somatic symptomology, and turnover intent among 126 call centre representatives (CCRs) from 11 call centres in metropolitan Melbourne, Australia. RESULTS: Hierarchical multiple regression analyses found that the common organizational stressors significantly explained between 10% and 53% of the variance in somatic symptomology, burnout (all 3 dimensions) and turnover intent. An additional amount of variance, between 6% and 22% in each of these dependent measures was significantly accounted for by the grouped call centre specific stressors. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, common organizational stressors and call centre specific stressors both significantly and independently contributed to burnout, somatic symptomology and turnover intent. These findings are discussed in relation to previous research, and suggestions for improved practice within call centres to safeguard the well-being of workers and for future research are provided.

Description: Principal Topic: This paper is part of a broader study of CEO performance and turnover in China. CEO turnover is usually represented as being determined by firm performance and corporate governance. In addition recent research identifies that CEO’s are recruited to bring a specific skill set to a business, but as the industry context changes, the relevance and hence tenure of these CEOs is reduced Henderson, Miller and Hambrick, 2006). One group of CEOs are those recruited on the basis of their entrepreneurial track record. This research analyses how the interaction between performance and corporate governance characteristics affects the tenure of this group. Methodology/Key Propositions: The research approach is through the development and testing of a model based on the earlier work of Miller (1999), and enhanced by categorization of industry and CEO specific factors. Secondary data is extracted from the National Bureau of Statistics, China, and industry publications that provide commentary on the track record of mobile CEOs. The main proposition is that CEOs with a history of entrepreneurial behaviour, will maintain tenure if their performance continues to reflect the entrepreneurial dimensions that led to their appointment. This relationship will be moderated by measures of corporate governance used in previous work (Pi Lili, Lowe, Zhao, 2005) Results and Implications: The research confirms the impact of governance, industry type and performance on CEO tenure. However it also identifies ’entrepreneurial’ CEOs as an important sub-group for whom the performance criteria appear to be stricter and specifically related to performance factors reflecting their recruitment as entrepreneurs
