The relatively new field of stream mining has necessitated the development of robust drift-aware algorithms that provide accurate, real time, data handling capabilities. Tools are needed to assess and diagnose important trends and investigate drift evolution parameters. In this paper, we present two new and novel visualisation techniques, Pixie and Luna graphs, which incorporate salient group statistics coupled with intuitive visual representations of multidimensional groupings over time. Through the novel representations presented here, spatial interactions between temporal divisions can be diagnosed and overall distribution patterns identified. It provides a means of evaluating in non-constrained capacity, commonly constrained evolutionary problems.

This paper explores the potential of enhancing effective communication of information arising from statistical analyses to a non-statistical audience using various graphical forms. In this regard we can learn a lot from the business world where often senior management don’t have the time to wade through complex summary tables of statistical analyses. It is far more efficient to use good graphic displays in order to communicate the essential ideas. Modern computer software packages offer a goldmine of opportunities to present statistical information to non-statistical audiences. As communicators we need to provide appropriate experiences within the structure of our teaching and/or consulting programs. The importance of context in understanding graphical output is discussed as well as examples of a few of the many and various graphical options available in several commonly used software packages.

Variation in the song of the male Common Blackbird was investigated within and between two locations in western Victoria. Each of 400 phrases (100 phrases per male) was characterised by 61 measurements relating to 13 aspects of each phrase. Principal component and stepwise discriminant analyses were undertaken on these measurements. Classification of blackbird song for location and individuality was based on timing within the phrase of the loudest elements. Evidence was found for within-phrase variability, with the greatest variation in the middle of the phrase. Within- and between-site comparison found that blackbird song exhibited both individual and site-specific characteristics consistent with earlier suggestions of phrase sharing within local populations. The study demonstrated that an objective statistical approach to song analysis was able to disciminate between individual birds from different locations.

Typically they experience high class-contact hours in addition to their clinical placements. Compounding the problem, undergraduate nursing students have diverse mathematical backgrounds and seldom perceive statistics as being relevant for them. Given these constraints we have adopted the relatively modest aim of producing informed and discriminating consumers of statistics and research, rather than skilled statistical practitioners or researchers. With a focus on computer output rather than by-hand calculations, we have made use of strategic examples, appropriate journal articles and an historical hypothetical. This approach has both relieved the anxiety and distraction associated with calculations and increased students’ engagement in the learning process.

The task of classifying the genre of polyphonic music signals is traditionally done using only low level features of the signal. In this paper high level features have been applied to improve the task of music genre classification. The use of statistical chord features and chord progression information in conjunction with low level features are proposed in this paper. The chord progression information is manifested in genre probability descriptors calculated using a pattern matching algorithm. Our proposed method provides an improvement of 12.4% in the classification results over a commonly compared technique.

This study examines the relationship between positive affectivity, negative affectivity, job satisfaction, and life satisfaction using a sample of 558 urban employees from Dalian. Positive and negative affectivity were measured with Watson's PANAS scale, job satisfaction was measured with Spector's JSS scale, and life satisfaction was measured with the International Wellbeing Group's PWI scale. All the scales are well established multi-item scales that have been validated both in English speaking populations and in China. The statistical analysis found that affectivity is a source of both job satisfaction and life satisfaction. Job satisfaction is positively related to life satisfaction, supporting the spillover theory. Job satisfaction partly mediates the relationship between affectivity and life satisfaction. The practical implications for managers is that because of the dispositional source of job and life satisfaction, managers need to put more emphasis on improving job satisfaction and subjective quality of life by improving the workplace environment.

Effective texture feature is an essential component in any content based image retrieval system. In the past, spectral features, like Gabor and wavelet, have shown superior retrieval performance than many other statistical and structural based features. Recent researches on multi-resolution analysis have found that curvelet captures texture properties, like curves, lines, and edges, more accurately than Gabor filters. However, the texture feature extracted using curvelet transform is not rotation invariant. This can degrade its retrieval performance significantly, especially in cases where there are many similar images with different orientations. This paper analyses the curvelet transform and derives a useful approach to extract rotation invariant curvelet features. Experimental results show that the new rotation invariant curvelet feature outperforms the curvelet feature without rotation invariance.

Although remotely sensed data have been widely explored for forest applications, passive remote sensing techniques are limited in their ability to capture forest structural complexity, particularly in uneven-aged, mixed species forests with multiple canopy layers. Generally, these techniques are only able to provide information on horizontal (two-dimensional) forest extent. The vertical forest structure (or the interior of the canopy and understorey vegetation) cannot be mapped using these passive remote sensing techniques. Fortunately, it has been shown that active remote sensing techniques via airborne LiDAR (light detection and ranging) with capability of canopy penetration yields such high density sampling that detailed description of the forest structure in three-dimensions can be obtained. Accordingly, much interest is attached to exploring the application of this approach for identifying the distribution of designated vegetation communities. However, the suitability of LiDAR data for the classification of forests with complex structures, particularly for cool temperate rainforest and neighbouring uneven-aged mixed forests in a severely disturbed landscape has hitherto remained untested. This study applied airborne LiDAR data for the classification of cool temperate rainforest dominated by Myrtle Beech (Nothofagus cunninghamii) and adjacent forests including naturally regenerated Mountain Ash (Eucalyptus regnans), mixed forest consisting of overstorey Mountain Ash and understorey Myrtle Beech, Silver Wattle (Acacia dealbata), and hardwood plantation dominated by Shining Gum (Eucalyptus nitens) in the Strzelecki Ranges, Victoria, Australia. LiDAR data were extracted within each of the forest plots. Nonground laser returns were used to generate forest height profiles for the analysis of the spatial distribution of vertical forest structure for the plots dominated by different forest types. The k-means clustering algorithm was performed on each of the plots to stratify the vertical forest structure into three layers, representing the overstorey, mid-storey and lower storey of the plot-level forests. Variables were then calculated from the LiDAR data based on the three-layered structure for each plot. The statistical analyses, which included oneway ANOVA (analysis of variance) and the post hoc tests, identified effective variables for forest type classifications. Linear discriminant analysis with cross-validation was carried out to classify the forest types and assess the classification accuracy using error matrixes. This study demonstrated the applicability of airborne LiDAR for the classification of the Australian cool temperate rainforest and adjacent forests in the study area.

However, the requirements and limitations imposed by 3D objects indicate the impropriety of conventional cryptosystems for 3D object encryption. This suggests the necessity of designing new ciphers. In addition, the study of prior works indicates that the majority of problems encountered with encrypting 3D objects are about point cloud protection, dimensional and spatial stability, and robustness against surface reconstruction attacks. To address these problems, this paper proposes a 3D object encryption scheme, based on a series of random permutations and rotations, which deform the geometry of the point cloud. Since the inverse of a permutation and a rotation matrix is its transpose, the decryption implementation is very efficient. Our statistical analyses show that within the cipher point cloud, points are randomly distributed. Furthermore, the proposed cipher leaks no information regarding the geometric structure of the plain point cloud, and is also highly sensitive to the changes of the plaintext and secret key. The theoretical and experimental analyses demonstrate the security, effectiveness, and robustness of the proposed cipher against surface reconstruction attacks.

Data were collected from white-collar workers across four Chinese cities in 2009. All the research variables were measured with multi-item instruments with good psychometric properties. The research found that environmental satisfaction, job satisfaction, conscientiousness and extraversion have a positive effect on subjective well-being. In addition, individuals married, managers and working in state sector were found to be happier in their lives than individuals who are single, in non-managerial position and in private sector. However, the research found no relationship between neuroticism, agreeableness and subjective well-being. The finding of a positive relationship between environmental satisfaction and subjective well-being suggests that by pursuing a balance between economic development and environmental protection, urban residents' SWB could be enhanced.
