Therapeutic prevention and/or early intervention programs for children at risk of developing disruptive behaviour disorders are increasingly being implemented in schools. One such Australian school-based program is CAST: CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service) and Schools Together, an evidenced-based program treating children with emerging disruptive behaviour disorders in the early primary school years. The current evaluation examines the process of implementation of the CAST program in primary schools. By using a conceptual model of school-based implementation (developed by Greenberg, Domitrovich, Graczyk & Zins, 2005) the wide array of factors that can affect successful implementation at the school level were identified, and those elements critical to implementation quality were examined. Semi-structured individual and group interviews were conducted with a sample of 69 school personnel across 16 schools in the City of Ballarat and wider Grampians region of Victoria, in both government and Catholic primary schools. Results showed that schools were highly satisfied with the quality of CAST resources and personnel, and the implementation and delivery of sessions as planned. Aspects that impacted negatively on the implementation process were the lack of parental engagement; the lack of classroom follow-up in some schools; the level of readiness and pre-planning by the schools; and the availability of technical support. Greenberg’s conceptual model appears to be a useful framework to utilise in examining the implementation of the CAST model, as it allowed close examination of how the program was implemented within naturally occurring constraints. It allowed the identification of elements within the CAST model and the associated support system that must be maintained and nurtured by the collaborating parties, in addition to the factors at a school level that are potential barriers to effective implementation. Identification and examination of such factors assist in ensuring quality outcomes for school-based interventions in the future.

The results showed that children's contentment regarding different school activities was based on fun, enjoyment and satisfaction of their curiosity. Results also showed that children with a high level of total self-concept experienced higher levels of contentment in some of their school subjects, significantly higher in two particularly demanding subjects - mathematics and project - than their counterparts with a low level of total of self-concept. Children with a high physical ability self-concept appeared to enjoy physical education and sports more than the other children. In addition, the children appeared to judge the level of importance of school subjects according to their educational, health or pragmatic value, both present and future. They were well aware of the educational value of schooling. However, the level of importance was reduced greatly in some children's eyes when the subjects carried little or not enough fun and enjoyment, particularly children with very low self-concept scores. This group appeared to be influenced by the intrinsic reward of the subjects rather than external benefits.

Abstract: This research aimed to explore the professional development of Physical Education (PE) teachers in a Brazilian municipal school. This study was constituted as an action research in which six PE teachers, a facilitator and a critical friend participated. Meetings with teachers and researchers; interviews; field notebook were the data sources. The results indicate that the community of practice (CP) was able to support teachers during their development. Teachers’ essential needs were met; the CP had autonomous decisions; and your voice heard. The support offered to teachers by CP originated through the process of building the teachers' own practice, supported by their own peers and the facilitator as they came together in a newly developed community.

It is complemented by insights from interviews with men’s sheds participants and rural fire volunteers about what it was that also led many of them to also ‘shed’ school early. Our paper identifies links between the success factors associated with informal learning pedagogies in voluntary and community groups identified in the UK and success factors associated with community-based shed programs in Australia. We identify the potential benefits of sheds in engaging both early school leavers and older men with negative recollections of school, in enjoyable, regular, hands-on activity. We also discuss ways in which some of the difficulties associated with shed-based school programs that seek to engage and reintegrate early school leavers might be avoided or minimised. Finally, we pose some unanswered questions about the implications of our research findings for education and training providers.

In Australia, as in many other countries, initiatives are constantly being developed which aim to assist school students’ transition into work. One such initiative, which was introduced towards the end of the 1990s, was the introduction of school-based apprenticeships and traineeships, often referred to by the umbrella term “school-based new apprenticeships” (SBNAs). Students taking part in these programs, normally in the final two years of schooling (Years 11 and 12), combine part-time work, study towards a vocational education and training (VET) qualification, and normal attendance at school. This paper reports on the first large-scale research study of school-based apprentices and trainees, which was carried out in late 2001 through a survey of students involved in the programs. The survey was carried out in the three Australian States with the highest numbers of school-based apprentices and trainees, Queensland, Victoria and South Australia. The paper commences with a description of the nature of school-based apprenticeships and a description of their introduction and rapid growth. It then gives an overview of the young people’s jobs, their learning and training, and concludes by discussing four problematic areas.

It is no longer the case that children automatically do not attend their local neighbourhood school, nor can it be assumed that within public schools that there is a heterogenous social mix. What we have is an increasingly segregated, stratified and residualised system of education in Australia as neo-liberal policies of so-called 'choice' do their pock-marking with those who can afford it 'opting out' to private education, leaving behind those without the resources to exercise choice.

Background: The purpose of this study was to undertake a process evaluation to examine the reach, adoption and implementation of a school-community linked physical activity (PA) program for girls aged 12 - 15 years (School Years 7 - 9) using the RE-AIM framework. Methods. Various approaches were used to assess 'reach', 'adoption' and implementation: (a) a school environment survey of intervention schools (n = 6); (b) teacher feedback regarding the professional development component (91.1% response rate) and lesson implementation (60.8% response rate); and (c) post-intervention focus group interviews with physical education (PE) teachers (n = 29), students (n = 125), coaches (n = 13) and instructors (n = 8) regarding program experiences. Results: Reach and Adoption: Seven schools (n = 1491 Year 7-9 female student enrolment; 70% adoption rate), five tennis clubs, eight football clubs and five leisure centres participated in the program during 2011. Implementation: Program design and professional development opportunities (training, resource manual and opportunities to work with coaches and instructors during PE classes) supported implementation and student engagement in PA. However, there was a lack of individual and organisational readiness to adopt program principles. For some deliverers there were deeply embedded ideologies that were not aligned with the Game Sense teaching approach upon which the program was based. Further, cognitive components of the program such as self-management were not widely adopted as other components of the program tended to be prioritised. Conclusion: The program design and resources supported the success of the program, however, some aspects were not implemented as intended, which may have affected the likelihood of achieving further positive outcomes. Barriers to program implementation were identified and should be considered when designing school-community linked interventions. In particular, future programs should seek to assess and adjust for organizational readiness within the study design. For example, shared commitment and abilities of program deliverers to implement the program needs to be determined to support program implementation. Trial registration. ACTRN12614000446662. How experiences with the workplace while at school affect young people after leaving school is the subject of this report. The experiences include those gained through work experience, school-based New Apprenticeships, part-time work and vocational placements in VET in Schools programs. Specific areas explored include the views of young people on the value of the various workplace experiences; for example, in relation to their staying at school and their post-school-to-work plans and pathways.

Multidimensional self-concept measurements have provided a vehicle for a comprehensive investigation of the relationship between participation in sport and the range of self-concept in children. The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in levels of social, academic, physical and global self-concepts between participants and non-participants in extra-curricular sport. The research further investigated children’s self-concept in relation to their time commitment and the level of competition. A total of 1,499 4th- to 6th-grade students participated in the research. The Self-Description Questionnaire I (SDQ-I) and the Participation in Extra-Curricular Sport Activity Questionnaire were utilised in this study. Results indicated that children who participated in extra-curricular sport activities had significantly higher levels of self-concept than their non-participating counterparts in their total self-concept as well as in all the social, academic and physical sub-scales, except for reading. Furthermore, children who competed in sport at the municipal level had a significantly higher physical ability self-concept, but a lower reading self-concept than that of the children who competed locally. There was also a trend that children’s physical ability self-concept improved with an increase in their participation hours up to 13–15 hours per week and a less significant tendency that showed the reading self-concept scores decreasing with the increase in participation hours.

If we are to reclaim the utopian imagination of socially just schools and egalitarian society we need to move beyond naive optimism to cultivate a notion of robust hope that is praxis-oriented and fully cognisant of the complexities, tensions and difficulties associated with the task. "Getting real" in this sense requires the development of conceptual ideas to critique existing social arrangements, a vision of an emancipatory alternative, and a set of political strategies and resources to affect progressive change. Notwithstanding the difficulties of contesting market-driven approaches to education, this study reveals that there are "resources of hope" in schools, educational institutions and the broader community to guide teachers and teacher educators in pursuing a goal of socially just schooling.

School settings are an essential source of physical activity for adolescents because they provide curricular, co-curricular opportunities in addition to time during scheduled breaks. There has been limited previous research examining the physical activity behaviour of adolescents during break periods. Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the inter-day variability of adolescent's physical activity (PA) during school lunchtime periods. Methods: Participants (n = 40) from yr 8 to 10 (mean age = 14.5 ± 0.8 yrs) wore a SPI-Elite Global Positioning System (GPS) unit during five lunchtimes during a school week. Heart rate (HR), speed, distance, global position, and G force were measured for each participant and reported across a range of play spaces including a cricket net area, grassed oval, quadrangle, basketball/netball court area and seated shaded area for each participant across the five days. Analyses were performed on time periods randomly selected from three days for windows of 20 min+. Time spent within the various play spaces was determined by overlaying GPS data with Google Earth images of the school playground. Results: Independent samples t-tests revealed males (mean = 2.5 ± .97 km) covered a greater distance compared to females (mean = 1.5 ± .73 km) at the p < 0.01 level. Males also displayed significantly higher HR than did females during lunch breaks, at the p < 0.01 level. Students spent significantly more time and covered the greatest distance on the oval (grassed area) when compared to other play spaces (p < 0.01), and girls spent significantly more time in the seated shaded area than did males (p < 0.01). There were no significant differences for inter-day variability of average time, distance, HR, speed or G force within adolescent students’ physical activity during lunchtimes. Conclusions: The results suggest adolescents’ physical activity during lunch breaks is relatively stable across days. There are a number of feasibility issues relating to the use of GPS technology within the context of school settings and these are discussed. Future physical activity interventions targeting adolescents should consider the nature of the play space and may need to be tailored differently for males and females.
