Description: Opportunistic access of licensed spectrum using a cognitive radio network (CRN) is getting research attraction due to its ability to improve utilisation of this scarce resource without affecting the primary users (PUs). To improve wide acceptability of CRN, it must be equipped with efficient protocols to deal with multiple primary networks to provision QoS guarantee for demand-driven applications by the secondary users (SUs). In this paper, a novel CSMA/CA-based multichannel cognitive radio medium access control (MCR-MAC) protocol is developed by modifying the 4-way handshaking based IEEE 802.11 DCF to dynamically assign contending SUs to free channels using an innovative random arbitration scheme. The paper also presents a detailed analytical model for cognitive interference to the PUs and SUs. The proposed protocol is designed to keep the interference level in check to remain transparent to the PUs. A throughput analysis at saturation load reveals that this fully ad-hoc MCR-MAC is capable of achieving throughput comparable to the ideal scenario (when SUs are equally divided to the channels) without using any centralised infrastructure or dedicated control channel. Extensive simulation results validate the accuracy of the theoretical analysis and establish MCR-MAC as a highly practical solution to construct a CRN in a region overlapped with multiple primary networks to offer data-rate sensitive applications by the SUs.

Description: Crowdsourcing is an effective technique that allows humans to solve complex problems that are hard to accomplish by automated tools. Some significant challenges in crowdsourcing systems include avoiding security attacks, effective trust management, and ensuring the system's correctness. Blockchain is a promising technology that can be efficiently exploited to address security and trust issues. The consensus protocol is a core component of a blockchain network through which all the blockchain peers achieve an agreement about the state of the distributed ledger. Therefore, its security, trustworthiness, and correctness have vital importance. This work proposes a Secure and Trustworthy Blockchain-based Crowdsourcing (STBC) consensus protocol to address these challenges. Model checking is an effective and automatic technique based on formal methods that is utilized to ensure the correctness of STBC consensus protocol. The proposed consensus protocol's formal specification is described using Communicating Sequential Programs (CSP#). Safety, fault tolerance, leader trust, and validators' trust are important properties for a consensus protocol, which are formally specified through Linear Temporal Logic (LTL) to prevent several security attacks, such as blockchain fork, selfish mining, and invalid block insertion. Description: This study explores how the voltage control of a remote part of the utility gird can be improved using more sophisticated voltage control on wind-solar farms equipped with fast communication platforms. The idea is to make renewable plant the master voltage controller during large disturbance events in the grid. This is done by proposing an enhanced voltage droop control strategy based on instantaneous reactive power consumption by monitoring the virtual impedance of the point of connection using a new customised data class model of IEC 61850 communication protocol. The conventional centralised voltage droop control strategy and the proposed instantaneous direct voltage control method are both implemented on the White Rock Solar Wind Farm in NSW, Australia and their performances are compared using both MATLAB Simulink simulations under 5% voltage step disturbances, single-phase-to-ground and three-phase-to-ground faults as well as some tests conducted in the field.

Description: Securing a cloud network is an important challenge for delivering cloud services to cloud users. There are a number of secure network protocols, such as VPN protocols, currently available to provide different secure network solutions for enterprise clouds. For example, PPTP, L2TP, GRE, IPsec and SSL/TLS are the most widely used VPN protocols in today’s securing network solutions. However, there are some significant challenges in the implementation stage. For example, which VPN solution is easy to deploy in delivering cloud services? Which solution can provide the best network throughput in delivering the cloud services? Which solution can provide the lowest network latency in delivering the cloud services? This thesis addresses these issues by implementing different VPNs in a test bed environment set up by the Cisco routers. Open source measurement tools will be utilized to acquire the results. This thesis also reviews cloud computing and cloud services and look at their relationships. It also explores the benefits and the weaknesses of each securing network solution. The results can not only provide experimental evidence, but also facilitate the network implementers in development and deployment of secure network solutions for cloud services.

Description: Multisectoral partnerships with local government have emerged as a strategy for solving wicked' problems in communities, although research about these types of public-private partnerships is limited. Available evidence suggests that differentials in power and status, value bases and perspectives on priorities have been problematic in partnership building with community. This paper examines the role of local government as the funded, lead organisation, in a public-private partnership for planning, designing and constructing a business accelerator in one of Australia's growth regions. Partnership scope, role and outcomes were measured against a conceptual framework mapping success indicators. Findings show core principles for successful partnership were achieved and supported by the role, capacity and commitment of local government to forming strong working relationships with consortium partners. Relationship building and commitment to collective project outcomes were pivotal to success. Further research is needed to assess whether emerging trends hold and consolidate over time.

Description: Banking Malware, has become a popular and ever more prevalent mechanism to monetise malware development. Since the development of the Zeus malware kit in 2007, the frequency and complexity of banking malware has been increasing. Developing a good understanding of the operation of a malware family is a first step in the reverse engineering required to create tools to extract the malware configuration, which is used in the remediation of malware infrastructure. This reverse engineering process in recent years has become increasingly challenging. This manuscript provides a brief summary of the reverse engineering of banking malware families over a two year period and emphasises the anti-analysis techniques employed by the authors of six families of banking malware. The manuscript presents this analysis, and examines trends in the development of these anti-analysis techniques.

Developed by modifying the 4-way handshaking-based IEEE 802.11 DCF, MCR-MAC dynamically assigns contending SUs to free channels using an innovative random arbitration scheme while keeping cognitive interference to the PUs in check by attenuating the packet size. Not only has the analytical model covered the full spectrum, from very light load to saturation, extensive simulation results have validated the accuracy of the analysis.

Description: Aim: The utility and uptake of pain management interventions across intensive care settings is inconsistent. A rapid realist review was conducted to synthesise the evidence for the purpose of theory building and refinement. Design: A five-step iterative process was employed to develop project scope/ research questions, collate evidence, appraise literature, synthesise evidence and interpret information from data sources. Methods: Realist synthesis method was employed to systematically review literature for developing a programme theory. Data Sources: Initial searches were undertaken in three electronic databases: MEDLINE, CINHAL and OVID. The review was supplemented with key articles from bibliographic search of identified articles. The first 200 hits from Google Scholar were screened. Results: Three action-oriented themes emerged as integral to successful implementation of pain management interventions. These included health facility actions, unit/team leader actions and individual nurses' actions. Conclusion: Pain assessment interventions are influenced by a constellation of factors which trigger mechanisms yielding effective implementation outcomes. Implications: The results have implications on policy makers, health organisations, nursing teams and nurses concerned with optimising the successful implementation of pain management interventions. Impact: The review enabled formation of a programme theory concerned with explaining how to effectively implement pain management interventions in intensive care. Description: An Internet of Multimedia Things (IoMT) architecture aims to provide a support for real-time multimedia applications by using wireless multimedia sensor nodes that are deployed for a long-term usage. These nodes are capable of capturing both multimedia and nonmultimedia data, and form a network known as Wireless Multimedia Sensor Network (WMSN). In a WMSN, underlying routing protocols need to provide an acceptable level of Quality of Service (QoS) support for multimedia traffic. In this paper, we propose a Seamless and Authorized Streaming (SAMS) framework for a cluster-based hierarchical WMSN. The SAMS uses authentication at different levels to form secured clusters. The formation of these clusters allows only legitimate nodes to transmit captured data to their Cluster Heads (CHs). Each node senses the environment, stores captured data in its buffer, and waits for its turn to transmit to its CH. This waiting may result in an excessive packet-loss and end-to-end delay for multimedia traffic. To address these issues, a channel allocation approach is proposed for an intercluster communication. In the case of a buffer overflow, a member node in one cluster switches to a neighboring CH provided that the latter has an available channel for allocation. The experimental results show that the SAMS provides an acceptable level of QoS and enhances security of an underlying network.
