Description: What is known about shared decision-making?: There is increasing investigation of shared decision-making in mental health services. Exploration of shared decision-making and relevant instrument is scant in China. What this paper adds to existing knowledge?: In this study, the Clinical Decision-making Involvement and Satisfaction (CDIS) was translated into Chinese and validated with patients and mental health professionals. The Chinese version of the CDIS is a reliable and valid instrument for measuring perception of involvement and satisfaction with treatment decision for schizophrenia. What are the implications for practice?: Mental health nurses could use the CDIS patient-rated and health professional-rated versions to compare their perceptions of the decision-making process. Abstract: Introduction There is growing interest in shared decision-making in Chinese mental health services. However, few specific instruments are available to measure decision-making satisfaction and involvement. Aim To translate and validate Clinical Decision-making Involvement and Satisfaction (CDIS) in a Chinese population. Methods The translation process was completed based on the Brislin translation method. Convenience sampling of 505 participants including 212 people diagnosed with schizophrenia and 293 mental health professionals for psychometric testing (e.g., content and construct validity, and test-retest reliability). Results The CDIS Chinese version has good internal consistency and temporal stability. Factor analysis determined two factors including satisfaction and involvement subscales, explaining 60.08% of the total variance. The Cronbach's α was 0.70, and the intraclass correlation coefficient ranged from 0.83 to 0.89. The composite reliability value was 0.85, and the average variance extracted was 0.50. Critical Ratio values ranged from 5.28 to 17.95, and item-total correlation values ranged from 0.48 to 0.75. Discussion The CDIS Chinese version is a feasible and reliable instrument. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons Ltd

Description: Background: Patient experience is recognised as a means of assessing healthcare delivery with organisations in many countries now gathering patient experience or satisfaction data. It is well documented that the benefits of improving a patients' experience include increased satisfaction, reduced length of stay, improved patient outcomes and reduction of costs. The experience of acute clinical deterioration is unique, extensive and complex as well as being a difficult experience for all involved. However, little is known about this experience from the patient's perspective. Aim: To explore what is known about the experiences of acute deterioration from the perspective of the patient. Design: A scoping review of international, peer-reviewed research studies and grey literature published between the years of 2000 and 2018. This review was guided by the three-step search strategy recommended by the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI). Data sources: A range of databases were searched, including CINAHL, Medline, Health Source, Joanna Briggs Institute, PsycINFO, Embase via Ovid, Cochrane library, Ovid Emcare, Scopus as well as grey literature, reference lists and the search engine Google Scholar. Review methods: Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) scoping review framework was utilised to identify patients' experiences of acute deterioration. Ten databases were searched, and 249 articles were retrieved. After screening the titles and abstracts, 102 articles were assessed in full text for eligibility, and finally 23 articles were further analysed and synthesised using inductive thematic analysis. Results: 19 qualitative studies, three quantitative and one mixed methods study met the inclusion criteria. Seven key themes emerged related to patients' experience of acute deterioration: (1) transformation of perception: memories of factual events; (2) psychological transformation: emotional distress and well-being; (3) physiological transformation: physical distress; (4) facing death; (5) the severity of acute deterioration: from the perspective of the patient; (6) relationship with healthcare professionals and the clinical environment; and (7) the value of relationships: the support of family and friends. Conclusions: Participants had considerable recall of their experiences and hospital admissions. The themes highlight the important issues patients face during their own acute physiological deterioration. This review has highlighted that further research is needed to specifically explore the patients' experience of acute deterioration and the emergency management they receive, for example from a hospital's rapid response team (RRT) or medical emergency team (MET). © 2019

Description: Elimination disorders are common in children and are associated with increased levels of psychological distress for both the child and their family. Despite successful treatments for elimination disorders, 30% of children do not respond to standard treatments to achieve continence. In these cases, a Urinary and Faecal Incontinence Training Program for Children and Adolescents (UFITPCA) has been established as an adjunct to existing therapy. The aim of the study is to explore the experiences of children who participated in the program. A qualitative design was employed with female children, aged 7–8 years, (n = 4) who participated in the UFITPCA program participated in a 60-min focus group interview. The parents of the children (n = 4) were also interviewed. Data was collected at the end of the 9-week program and analysed to identify themes that encompassed the experiences of the UFITPCA program and associated outcomes amongst both the children and their parents. Three central themes were emerged from the data, which included: Make it Stop, I'm not Alone, and Look at what I can do now. These findings were encapsulated by the desperation and frustration of children and parents prior to commencing the program; the widespread positive implications for the children's wellbeing from having engaged in a program with others just like them, and their sense of satisfaction of putting their newfound knowledge into practice. Both children and parents recognized a change in their child's overall sense of wellbeing and parents identified that their children felt more in control of symptoms and how they responded when symptoms arose. The children experienced an increase in their acceptance and self-efficacy of their symptoms. © 2022 The Authors. Description: Aims: This integrative review aimed to synthesize evidence about the patients' experiences during the planned perioperative care pathway. Design: Integrative review. Data Sources: Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Medline Ovid, Scopus, and American Psychological Association (APA) PsychINFO. Original, peer-reviewed studies published in English between 2012 and 2023 exploring patient experiences during the planned perioperative care pathway were reviewed. Methods: This review was guided by the Whittemore and Knafl method and followed PRISMA guidelines to search the literature. Twenty-two articles were selected for the final study. Results: Three themes emerged: Sharing of information is empowering; interpersonal relationships are valued by patients, and hospital systems and care co-ordination influence the patient experience. Conclusions: The quality and consistency of the information patients receive can both support and undermine patient confidence in health professionals. The quality of relationships that participants experience and effective communication with health professionals can support or compromise the quality of the patients' perioperative experience. The nature of the hospital systems and care co-ordination in hospital has implications for the quality of recovery from surgery. Impact: This review evaluates whether national and international health services and organizations, adhering to the WHO guidelines, have developed and implemented intentionally focused perioperative care with the aims to achieving effective and sustainable surgical outcomes through increased patient satisfaction. Description: This book aims to foster collaborations between patients who have intense lived experience with a medical condition or family violence and researchers investigating them. Inviting patients or survivors into the research team is found to have significant advantages, and chapters review the literature on the benefits they can bring to investigative research teams. The collaboration can take place at multiple stages of research from helping to research design, participating in co-investigators, contributing to the interpretation of results, etc. The conditions addressed in this book include medical conditions from anxiety, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, lupus, asthma, chronic kidney disease, etc. The authors are higher degree students, academics, and active research team members who share their experiences. This is be instrumental in helping patients and survivors decide whether to transition to research. It will also support research team leaders in determining how to benefit from the new perspectives researchers with lived experience bring. The personal narratives provide insight into the challenges and rewards of having lived experience while conducting research.
