‘Working together’ : Public libraries supporting rural, regional, and remote low-socioeconomic student success in partnership with universities

  • Description: University students living in rural, regional, and remote (RRR) areas of Australia face unique challenges including geographical isolation, lack of access to face-to-face support, and technological barriers. Additionally, RRR students from low-socioeconomic (low-SES) backgrounds experience multiple forms of disadvantage compared to their on-campus peers, and require additional study, learning, and social support. Partnerships between universities and local public libraries can enhance RRR low-SES student success through increased access to face-to-face support, reliable technologies, and study facilities. This exploratory research, led by five regional universities, presents the first national-level empirical data exploring how Australian public libraries and universities can work together to facilitate success for RRR low-SES students. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews with public librarians from RRR low-SES communities across Australia. Thematic analysis findings explore themes of librarians’ perceptions of students as persons; the role of regional librarians in supporting RRR low-SES students; RRR low-SES students’ access to learning support; and the critical elements of sustainable partnerships between RRR public libraries and universities. Key recommendations are provided to guide future partnerships between public libraries and universities, including building the foundations of partnerships; professional development to support partnerships; and recommendations for good partnership practices. © 2019 Emma Power, Helen Partridge, Sue Owen, Kathryn Kelly and Sandra Jeffries.

A longitudinal study on a place-based school-university partnership : listening to the voices of in-service teachers

  • Description: This paper reports on a longitudinal place-based study by two Australian teacher educators investigating their three-year science-based school-university partnership. The study examined key benefits, challenges, and tensions within the partnership. Data collection was drawn from focus group interviews with in-service teachers across each partnership year. While findings portray the partnership as a catalyst for increased science learning opportunities for school students, teaching opportunities for pre-service teachers, and new in-service teacher roles and responsibilities, the study highlights the evolving nature of partnership development, including the need for continuous negotiation of labor division and stakeholder expectations. © 2023 The Authors

  • Description: The success of the tourism industry is highly dependent on the quality of business operations. To run tourism businesses well, operators need to be skilled, flexible and innovative in order to maintain and enhance competitiveness. The aim of this paper is to share the authors’ initial insights into tourism industry capacity building via flexibly delivered online skilling and knowledge sharing. This discussion paper builds on the work of online learning research for small tourism firms conducted in Europe and compares the European approach and considers how the European approach to content development and delivery informed a recently piloted Australian online skilling program. The paper also provides insights into online user behaviour and challenges fundamental research expectations. While both programs have focussed tourism information and skills development, the Australian pilot has been embedded in the Tourism Accreditation Board of Victoria and is being utilised to enable operators to complete tourism industry accreditation. Aiming to raise industry standards and move away from ineffective silo approaches to industry training and capacity building, this pilot reflects the importance of and contributes to the development of an effective national voluntary accreditation system.

Who speaks for whom? Can nurses be patient advocates in renal settings?

  • Description: Nursing texts laud the role of nurses as advocates for patients. With increased acknowledgement of patient-centred care, is it appropriate or desired for nurses to presume this as their role? An examination of concepts of advocacy and autonomy highlight potential conflicts between the nurses' adoption of the roles of advocate and surveyor in renal care. There is no clear and definitive answer to 'who can speak for whom' when considering advocacy for people involved in renal replacement therapies. It is evident that what is required is clearer articulation of how renal nurses can act as advocates for patients within the context of their multiple roles and with a goal of partnerships in care.
