Description: War and conflict have been widespread in Afghanistan for more than three decades, with insurmountable atrocities, human suffering and population displacement. Over one and half million Afghans have died and eight million have become refugees or internally displaced people because of conflict. Afghans continue to be the world's largest refugee population, the majority being women, children and the elderly. The political and sociocultural background to the conflict and how it has influenced population displacement throughout the region will be outlined in detail. The psychosocial and psychological effects of trauma will be discussed, including how these situations impact both male and female Afghanis. The examination will discuss young male refugees, a vulnerable population who are recruited and trained as resistance fighters to further expand Jihad and maintain control of Afghanistan. The examination will also identify an increase in post war antagonism, domestic violence and domination of women within Afghan communities. Overall, the chapter will discuss how lingering and new world ideologies are impacted by education, language and identity. The discussion will conclude with recommendations for policy, practice and interventions to effectively respond to the educational needs of those who remain physically and psychologically displaced by conflict and those who now live in post war Afghanistan. © 2015 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc. Description: International social workers inserted into crises contexts in the global South need concepts and theories in order to make sense of local circumstances and conditions and to inform their practice. This chapter applies a critical posthumanist lens to such conflict situations. Post-humanism, as shall emerge, deconstructs the term ‘human’ and its associated socio-political significance viewing ‘human’ as a contested hierarchical category (Braidotti, 2013) at the core of a biopolitics involving “life itself” (Agamben, 1998). Employing a critical post-humanist lens could expose decisions such as ending the Western military intervention in Afghanistan as acts of necropolitics, Mbembe’s term denoting policies that decide over life and death (Mbembe, 2019). A post-humanist analysis could be used to highlight the fragility of supposedly inalienable human rights. The question raised in this chapter is whether this kind of deconstruction of humanist universals that brings to light ethno-centric arrogance as well as brutality and cruelty can assist social workers to make sense of the events unleashed by militants in Afghanistan or Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province and ultimately lead to better social work practice.

Description: This chapter considers the dominant political, economic and social context of contemporary mental health services in western developed countries. Recent advances in mental health workforce development are focused on interdisciplinary collaboration yet much of the professional development provided remains discipline specific. Areas where an interdisciplinary approach to professional development would be beneficial are identified with a new model of human rights interdisciplinary professional development proposed in this chapter. A central feature of this model is critical reflection and a focus on issues of human rights to promote the development of humane, non-stigmatising approaches to mental health care and the development of practice wisdom. The integration of macro and micro knowledge and skill development is an essential aspect of this. This approach is considered a priority due to the increased powers vested in mental health workers to engage in involuntary or compulsory practices. A case study of professional development for the mental health workforce in the state of Victoria in Australia is presented. Professional development is considered within the context of professional practice, career development and lifelong learning and accreditation requirements by government regulatory bodies and professional associations. © 2016 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc.

Description: This article examines the policing of a major international political event (the G20 Meetings in Brisbane, Australia in 2014) from the perspective of the police and representatives of demonstrator groups who participated in the event. The article locates the policing of the 2014 G20 meetings within the history of the policing of major international political meetings in other countries. It analyses the legal framework within which the policing of the Brisbane G20 meeting was undertaken, comparing and contrasting these with legal frameworks developed for similar meetings and associated demonstrations in other jurisdictions. In the case of the Australian G20 Act, the legislation prioritized security over human rights, including the freedoms of expression and peaceful assembly. The strategies and planning processes applied by police in the lead up to the G20 are discussed, including the efforts made to ensure policing responses were respectful of the democratic rights of protesters. Drawing on interview and other data, the article reveals a diversity of perspectives on the ‘human rights’ policing and dialogue models, and provides an assessment of ‘Operation Southern Cross’ based on the post-event review of the G20 legislation undertaken by the Queensland Crime and Corruption Commission. The authors conclude that the policing of G20, based on extensive dialogue and minimization of coercive public order strategies, fostered a peaceful G20 event. The article concludes with observations about the perceived success of G20 policing in Australia, and indicates some lessons learned for best practice policing for future global events. © 2017 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Women’s experiences of healthcare pre, during, and post incarceration in victoria: do they reflect human rights frameworks and throughcare principles?

Description: Informed by a feminist epistemology and conducted through a critical feminist lens, this study explores the pre, during, and post incarceration healthcare experiences of women incarcerated in Victoria between 2014 and 2020. This study further explores whether the women’s experiences reflect human rights and throughcare principles (throughcare) frameworks. A multi-methodological approach has been adopted, incorporating feminist pragmatism and qualitative narrative research underpinning a feminist standpoint. Additionally, this study has been conducted utilising an insider researcher perspective adding a unique perspective of the reality of women’s incarceration in Victoria. Information was gathered through semi-structured interviews with seven women who have experienced incarceration and six workers who have experience supporting women in contact with Victoria’s prison system. Additionally my personal narrative has been incorporated and utilised throughout the study. The narratives of the women (including my own) and the workers were analysed in the first instance utilising Hybrid Thematic Analysis aided through Nvivo software. Document analysis was then used to examine instruments relevant to human rights and throughcare principles frameworks internationally, nationally, and on a state level for themes related to women’s healthcare. Key human rights themes, including the right to health, the right to be free from cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment, and the right to be treated with dignity and respect, together with throughcare themes, including care continuity and co-ordinated care, were then utilised to reanalyse the narratives of the women and workers to identify experiences related to these themes. The findings indicate that the women in this study had mixed healthcare experiences in the community pre and post incarceration; however, negative experiences appeared more prominent throughout their incarceration. Histories of socio-economic disadvantage and previous life trauma also appeared to have impacted women’s healthcare experiences. These findings are supported by the narratives of the six workers who shared the experiences of some women they supported as they transitioned to and post incarceration. Furthermore, the findings demonstrate that negative healthcare experiences appeared more prominent at Dame Phyllis Frost Centre than at Tarrengower Prison. Overall, this study has revealed a number of reported experiences that do not reflect the spirit of the human rights framework in a positive light. Furthermore, whilst there did not appear to be any overt violation of women’s human rights, when women’s experiences of healthcare are considered cumulatively, particularly in the prison setting, there is potential for their rights to be violated.Although the narratives indicate inconsistent application of throughcare principles for women entering and leaving prison, throughcare disruption appeared to be more prevalent for women entering prison. Additionally, the women’s experiences and those reported by the workers do not reflect throughcare principles positively

Description: Purpose The purpose of this viewpoint article is to consider the #BlackLivesMatter movement within the Aboriginal Australian struggle for equality, sovereignty and human rights. Indigenous sovereignty has been threatened throughout Australia's history of colonization. We provide a viewpoint and recommendations for social policy education and practice.Design/methodology/approach. We provide commentary and interpretation based upon the lived experience of Black, Indigenous and Other People of Color (BIPOC) co-authors, co-authors who are Allies, extant literature and practice wisdom as social policy educators. FindingsUniversities are sources of knowledge production, transmission and consumption within society. We provide critical recommendations for what social policy education within universities can address human rights and the #BlackLivesMatter movement.Originality/valueCulturally responsive inclusion for BIPOC has only just begun in Australia and globally within the context of the #BlackLivesMatter movement. This paper adds critical conversation and recommendations for what social policy programs might do better to achieve universities' teaching and learning missions.

Description: This chapter begins a conversation about the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the concepts of rights, diversity, equity and inclusion that underpin them, and the ways in which they are enacted in a variety of contexts. There is a specific focus on SDG4 “Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all”. Based on examinations of the SDGs, the conversations throughout the book give voice to those who work at times within and sometimes outside mainstream education discourse; people who use inclusive approaches to teach early childhood, primary and secondary school and higher education students, parent-educators, parents and carers, academics teaching and researching in the field of inclusion and teachers and academics who themselves have impairments and disabilities. In this chapter, we investigate the policies, discourses and epistemologies that are foundational for the concepts of rights, diversity, equity and inclusion.
