This thesis seeks to develop a critical understanding of the impact of a particular Community Renewal project on the residents. The Wendouree West Community Renewal was part of a broader Victorian state government intervention, Neighbourhood Renewal, which worked ‘on’ communities identified as disadvantaged. The study investigated the experiences of key residents, along with those of the author, during the period 2001-2013. The main contention is that Wendouree West Community Renewal project colluded with the welfare sector to impose a hegemonic and alien set of understandings on the community. This study is passionate; it takes a stance that is unashamedly political, ideological and partisan. Its key premise is that government interventions of this kind are damaging to communities like the one investigated. The Wendouree West experience promoted a three-fold residualisation: at the level of a ‘breaking down’ of local economies; an undermining of formal and informal education at a community level; and a manipulation of understandings of place, belonging and community that resulted in the imposition of a fake ’aspirational community’ in Wendouree West. The impact of this three-fold residualisation was a deep stigmatisation of Wendouree West as a ‘non-place’ (Auge, 2008), enabling its ultimate ghettoisation, both within the broader context of the regional city of which Wendouree West forms a small part, and within the understandings of residents themselves. This thesis represents struggle at a number of levels: the struggle of the residents to push back against a hegemonic intervention; the struggle of a scholar to make sense of his own role within the action; and the struggle of how to represent the residents’ stories in ways that are powerful and ‘truthful’ within the context of a PhD thesis. ii The ‘critical hope’ of this work is that the residents are able to push back against this program through acts of resistance and that community organising, in the style of the American radical Saul Alinsky, may represent a possible longer term means for empowerment and self-determination.

This quasi-experimental study aimed to evaluate the positive psychological intervention of recording three good things on alleviating nurses' burnout. Eighty-seven nurses with burnout were recruited. Nurses in the study group recorded three good things using communication tool WeChat for six months, no records were made in the control group. After intervention, the score of exhaustion decreased considerably for nurses in the study group. Nurses recording three good things on average twice a week returned the lowest score of exhaustion. This intervention combined with appropriate surveillance and encouragement is recommended to reduce nurses' burnout and create a positive work environment.

There are two main research approaches which are widely used by researchers: quantitative and qualitative research. They represent different research paradigms. The former is closely associated with statistically oriented scientific inquiry and the latter has become increasingly popular in social inquiry. In other words, the former is about numbers and variable relationships and the latter is about meaning and meaning making. Thematic analysis and grounded theories are often used together in qualitative inquiry in search of themes and theoretical constructs. Discourse analysis and critical discourse analysis focus more on discourse structure, social context, and empowerment. This chapter discusses these four types of analyses in qualitative research.

The quality and usefulness of patient held logbooks as a record to improve communication between healthcare professionals providing cancer care was evaluated. Its aim was to facilitate greater coordination and information sharing between patients, carers, clinicians and other health professionals. A mixed-method exploratory study conducted 12-week post distribution of logbooks to patients undertaking cancer care. Data was gathered through questionnaires returned by 66 participants (response rate of 57.4%) and interviews with five clinical oncology nurses at a Tasmanian hospital. The logbook quality was evaluated against two sets of indicators, including content and layout. The general effectiveness of the patient logbook was also assessed based on its usefulness, usability, efficiency and satisfaction. The logbook was considered useful among 63 (95.1%) participants. They acknowledged the logbook enabled them to be better informed, created a feeling of empowerment and greater control over their medical condition. The logbook was observed to improve communication between clinicians, their patients and families. The evaluation generated rich, in-depth information and provided useful insights into the general quality and usefulness of the logbook for cancer care. However, the meaning of this term is debated, particularly in nursing. Some nurses might believe that, because they are healthcare practitioners working in healthcare services, that they are 'by default' automatically involved in health promotion activities however, this is often not the case. Instead, they are more likely to be engaging in health education activities that is, simply providing individuals with health-related information, rather than seeking to empower individuals, families, groups and communities. While health education is related to health promotion, these terms are not interchangeable, since health education is a component of health promotion. This article clarifies these concepts and describes approaches to illness prevention and promoting well-being that nurses can use in their practice with patients across the lifespan.

Microfinance enables poor women to engage in income-generating activities, which helps them become financially independent, strengthening their decision-making power within the household and society. Consequently, microfinance has the potential to reduce gender inequality (GI). Case-study evidence from across the developing world both supports and contradicts this hypothesis. We therefore revisit this issue using macroeconomic cross-country panel data for 64 developing economies over the period 2003-2014. We find that women's participation in microfinance is associated with a reduction in GI. However, regional interactions reveal that cultural factors are likely to influence the GI-microfinance nexus.
