  • Description: This article provides an analysis of the issues and ethical challenges faced in a study with LGBTIQ student participants concerning their experiences of violence, harassment and bullying in tertiary settings. The authors detail the ethical challenges behind the development of the project, and around conducting research with a minority and vulnerable population. The article illustrates how the utilization of feminist and queer theory has impacted the process of conducting ethical research, including approaches to recruitment and participant autonomy. The dilemmas of confidentiality within a self-labelled and easily identifiable population are resolved. Further, unexpected challenges and risks to participant safety created through adherence to institutional ethical research frameworks are rectified. Importantly, the authors seek to avoid revictimization of participants and to instead empower students in their responses to violence, harassment and bullying that they may have experienced. The authors point to utilization of theoretical foundations and continual reflexive improvement as elements of best practice for those seeking to research minority populations, and in projects marked by the participation of those deemed vulnerable and high-risk. © 2016, © The Author(s) 2016.

  • Description: In-house healthcare monitoring applications are continuous time-critical applications often built upon Body Area Wireless Sensor Networks (BAWSNs). Our Assistive Care Loop Framework (ACLF) is an in-house healthcare application capable of monitoring the health conditions of aged/patients over a dedicated period of time by deploying the BAWSN as the monitoring component. However, the wireless medium used in the BAWSN for communications is prone to vulnerabilities that could open a door to attackers tampering with or compromising the user's data privacy. Hence, it is imperative to maintain the privacy and integrity of the data to gain the confidence and hence, the acceptance of the users of the healthcare applications. Furthermore, in time-critical applications, the vital health conditions must be monitored at regular intervals within their specified critical time. Therefore, the security model proposed for the BAWSN must not incur undue overheads when meeting the critical time requirements of the application. In this paper, we propose and implement a secure adaptive triple-key scheme (aTKS) for the BAWSN to achieve the privacy and integrity of the monitored data with minimal overheads. We then present the performance results of our scheme for the BAWSN, using real-time test-bed implementations and simulations. © 2011 IEEE.

  • Description: Information technology and high-tech systems used daily in hospitals increase the demand for measuring information security threats in the healthcare industry. The impact of complexity of using new healthcare information and communications technology (ICT) devices places more pressure on the healthcare community to perceive different information systems (IS) security threats as they involve different IS management models. This research study focused on measuring the healthcare community perceptions and on the following issues to include definition of information security perception of information security threats perception of information security management and perception of information security in the context of another healthcare community. To assess to plan, design and implement a national information security strategy for their healthcare sector. A survey was developed and interviewed 60 healthcare employees from three hospitals based in Dubai. The research results assist in creating awareness for easy access to hands-on guidelines for the healthcare community, thereby increasing the awareness levels of information security in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). These results assist the UAE government to further adapt the training and education programs for the healthcare community to increase their effectiveness and efficiency levels of IT and subsequent IS development. A discussion of the current status of Dubai hospitals privacy, confidentiality and security challenge is presented.
