Description: Background: Nurses worldwide are expected to take a leading role in caring for older people. Considerable literature dedicated to the range and application of assessment skills used by nurses vary. There is limited knowledge of registered nurses' (RNs) views of their assessment of older adults.Aim: The aim of this project was to explore RNs current perceptions of nursing assessment, and the core skills they identified as necessary.Design: A qualitative descriptive design study was conducted in three inpatient units in one regional hospital in Victoria.Method: Date were collected through participant observation of RNs (n = 13) followed by 1:1 semi-structured interviews. Data were analysed thematically.Conclusion: This research has illuminated that an ill-defined repertoire of skills was used by RNs when assessing older persons. Skills identified appeared to be based on years of personal-professional experience. Differences were noted between the descriptions nurses gave and what was observed during interactions with older persons.

Description: Aims and objectives: To understand the needs of critically ill patient families', seeking to meet those needs and explore the process and patterns of involving family members during routine care and resuscitation and other invasive procedures. Methods: A structured literature review using Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Pubmed, Proquest, Google scholar, Meditext database and a hand search of critical care journals via identified search terms for relevant articles published between 2000 and 2010. Results: Thirty studies were included in the review either undertaken in the Intensive Care Unit or conducted with critical care staff using different methods of inquiry. The studies were related to family needs; family involvement in routine care; and family involvement during resuscitation and other invasive procedures. The studies revealed that family members ranked both the need for assurance and the need for information as the most important. They also perceived their important needs as being unmet, and identified the nurses as the best staff to meet these needs, followed by the doctors. The studies demonstrate that both family members and healthcare providers have positive attitudes towards family involvement in routine care. However, family members and healthcare providers had significantly different views of family involvement during resuscitation and other invasive procedures. Conclusion: Meeting Intensive Care Unit family needs can be achieved by supporting and involving families in the care of the critically ill family member. More emphasis should be placed on identifying the family needs in relation to the influence of cultural values and religion held by the family members and the organisational climate and culture of the working area in the Intensive Care Unit. © 2013 Blackwell Publishing Ltd.

Description: Aims and objectives: To investigate nurses’ roles and responsibilities in providing bereavement care during the care of dying patients within acute care hospitals. Background: Bereavement within acute care hospitals is often sudden, unexpected and managed by nurses who may have limited access to experts. Nurses’ roles and experience in the provision of bereavement care can have a significant influence on the subsequent bereavement process for families. Identifying the roles and responsibilities, nurses have in bereavement care will enhance bereavement supports within acute care environments. Design: Mixed-methods systematic review. Methods: The review was conducted using the databases Cumulative Index Nursing and Allied Health Literature Plus, Embase, Ovid MEDLINE, PsychINFO, CareSearch and Google Scholar. Included studies published between 2006–2015, identified nurse participants, and the studies were conducted in acute care hospitals. Seven studies met the inclusion criteria, and the research results were extracted and subjected to thematic synthesis. Results: Nurses’ role in bereavement care included patient-centred care, family-centred care, advocacy and professional development. Concerns about bereavement roles included competing clinical workload demands, limitations of physical environments in acute care hospitals and the need for further education in bereavement care. Conclusions: Further research is needed to enable more detailed clarification of the roles nurse undertake in bereavement care in acute care hospitals. There is also a need to evaluate the effectiveness of these nursing roles and how these provisions impact on the bereavement process of patients and families. Relevance to clinical practice: The care provided by acute care nurses to patients and families during end-of-life care is crucial to bereavement. The bereavement roles nurses undertake are not well understood with limited evidence of how these roles are measured. Further education in bereavement care is needed for acute care nurses. © 2016 John Wiley & Sons Ltd

Engaging patients with moderate to severe acquired brain injury in goal setting

Description: Background/Aims: An exploratory study of a novel approach to using the Goal Engagement Scale to examine patients’, families’ and health professionals’ perceptions of patient engagement in goal setting. Methods: This mixed methods study was conducted from September 2013 to April 2014 in both inpatient trauma and rehabilitation units at an Australian health care service. Participants were 22triads (patients with moderate to severe traumatic brain injury or stroke, their family member(s) and a treating health professional) participating in routine goal setting interviews. Goal setting interviews were audio recorded, transcribed and thematically analysed, drawing upon an iterative process of qualitative data analysis, while the Goal Engagement Scale scores were analysed descriptively, drawing comparison between triad participant findings. Findings: Perception of patient’s level of engagement in goal setting differed between health professionals, patients and families. Health professionals’ views dominated the goal setting process. Goal setting interview data revealed four main themes, highlighting the importance of reflective listening skills to build a trusting relationship with patients and families to support engagement in goal setting.
