An ethical engagement: creative practice research, the academy and professional codes of conduct

  • Description: This paper reports on the experiences of creative practice graduate researchers and academic staff as they seek to comply with the requirements of the Australian National Statement on the Ethical Conduct of Research Involving Humans. The research was conducted over a two-year period (2015 to 2017) as part of a wider project ‘iDARE – Developing New Approaches to Ethics and Research Integrity Training through Challenges Presented by Creative Practice Research’. The research identified the appreciation of ethics that the participants acquired through their experience of institutional research ethics procedures at their university. It also revealed a disjunction between the concepts of ethics acquired through meeting institutional research ethics requirements, the notion of ethics that many researchers adopt in their own professional creative practice and the contents of professional codes of conduct. A key finding of the research was that to prepare creative practice graduates for ethical decision-making in their professional lives, research ethics training in universities should be broadened to encompass a variety of contexts and enable researchers to develop skills in ethical know-how.

  • Description: There has long been acceptance within healthcare that one of the roles that nurses fulfil is to do with patient advocacy. This has historically been positioned as part of the philosophical and inherent requirements of the nursing profession at large and is supported through shared conceptualisations of the nursing profession. Such conceptualisations are communicated to nursing professionals by way of first their education, and second their professional codes, guidelines and standards for practice. The focus on advocacy is further embedded within patient-centred care frameworks and concepts of the nurse–patient therapeutic relationship. Nurses have also been considered ideally placed to undertake the work of patient advocacy due to the 24/7 nature and intimacy of the care provided. What this means is that nurses are under the impression that that they must be an advocate for their patients through their nursing practice. However, for a fundamental concept of nursing, advocacy is poorly defined, and practices commonly associated with advocacy are undercut by the professionalisation of nursing and other constraints. In addition, nursing standards and frameworks of care are being actively reframed around ideas of empowerment which do not necessarily fit well with those of advocacy. This article thus suggests that it is time to recognise that the work of advocacy is no longer representative of what nurses (can) do in practice, and to explicitly reorient conceptualisations of nurse practice around empowerment. Corporate social responsibility and performance measurement systems in Iran : a levers of control perspective

  • Description: This study draws on Simons' levers of control model to explore how companies rely on the balanced use of diagnostic and interactive performance measurement systems (PMS) to translate corporate social responsibility (CSR) into superior performance. Data were collected based on a survey data set from 98 CFOs of public listed companies in Iran. The theoretical model was tested using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM, SmartPLS 3.0), which enjoys minimum demands concerning normality assumptions and sample size. The findings show that CSR is positively associated with PMS and organizational performance. Moreover, CSR is indirectly related to organizational performance through the mediating effect of PMS. This study extends the previous literature by simultaneously incorporating resource orchestration theory in the management accounting and CSR settings. The findings provide further insights into the issue of how adopting proper management control mechanisms (e.g., balanced use of PMS) can support organizations in orchestrating the social, environmental, and economic impacts more effectively. © 2022 The Authors.
