Description: Social networking sites and apps (SNSAs) are being used more frequently across the world and yet the nature of this online environment and associated interactions are not fully understood. With no restrictions for SNSAs use related to specific geographical regions, language, age, gender, educational level, or any other factors, it is important to find a concept to describe and explain the components of this online environment and their relationships. This paper describes the environment of SNSAs use by Saudi postgraduate students from the perspective of second-generation activity theory (AT). The findings supported the theoretical framework of AT as a useful lens in understanding SNSAs use from the perspective of students, particularly in a cultural environment where physical communication has restrictions based on gender. A similar AT model can be drawn for the use of SNSAs, taking the perspective of different groups of academic users. The flexibility of the AT model appears at the level of SNSAs as technical and physical tools, and at the level of users’ community, which was managed by the explicit and implicit rules relating to communication. This feature reveals the way in which this extended framework can be used to indicate pertinent features of SNSAs. © 2021 The Author(s). Description: The maker movement, expansion of makerspaces in schools and design activities utilising 3D apps and 3D printing technologies, allow educators to foster creativity through play and experimentation. However, little research exists to inform practice in makerspaces, particularly with young children, under eight years of age. This study adopted constructivist-referred methodology and examined how thirty-four children from Kindergarten to Grade 2 classrooms (5–8 year olds, three classrooms) designed and printed 3D objects using tablet devices, 3D printers, physical materials and IDEO’s five-stage design thinking model. Primary data comprised video screen recordings from separate episodes of pairs of children working together. Across the 16 h of analysed video, different manifestations of design thinking were observed. A range of makerspaces activities invoked creative, critical thinking, problem solving and decision-making skills, aligning with the IDEO design process. This study opens a powerful new door to rich learning potential for young children engaging in maker activities, and paves the way for teachers of young children to explore innovative approaches such as a design thinking, in their everyday practice.

Description: Catfishing, the act of deceiving and exploiting another person online, can have significant negative impact on the target. To date, limited research has explored individual differences in perpetration of catfishing. We address this paucity by adopting an evolutionary psychology theoretical framework (the “cheater strategy” hypothesis) and exploring the utility of gender and the “Dark Tetrad” personality traits of psychopathy, sadism, Machiavellianism, and narcissism to predict catfishing perpetration. A sample of 664 participants (55.8% men, 40.3% women) with an average age of 28.84 years (SD = 9.60) were recruited via social media and completed an anonymous online questionnaire which comprised measures of personality and catfishing behaviours. Combined, the variables explained 62.6% of variance in catfishing perpetration. Results partially supported the hypotheses, with only psychopathy, sadism, and narcissism emerging as positive predictors of catfishing perpetration. Findings of the current study indicate that evolutionary psychology may be a useful theoretical framework when exploring antisocial online behaviours. Further, these findings provide crucial information regarding the psychological profile of a “catfish” and may have important practical implications by informing the prevention and management of this online behaviour. © 2022 Elsevier Ltd

Description: Individuals with an Eating Disorder (ED) are typically reluctant to seek help via traditional means (e.g., psychologists). However, recent evidence suggests that many individuals seek assistance via social media for weight and diet related concerns. Sophisticated approaches are needed to better distinguish those who may be in need of help for an ED from those who are simply commenting on ED in online social environments. In order to facilitate effective communication between individuals with or at-risk of an ED and healthcare professionals, this research exploits a deep learning model to differentiate the users with ED engagement (e.g., ED sufferers, healthcare professionals or communicators) over social media. For this purpose, a collection of Twitter data is compiled using Twitter application programming interface (API) on the Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) Nectar research cloud. After collecting 1,400,000 Twitter biographies in total, a subset of 4000 biographies are annotated manually. This annotation enables the differentiation of users engaged with ED-focused language on social media into five categories: ED-user, healthcare professional, communicator, healthcare professional-communicator, and other. Based on these annotated categories, a predictive deep learning model based on bidirectional encoder representations from transformers (BERT) and long short-term memory (LSTM) is developed. The model achieves an F1 score of 98.19% and an accuracy of 98.37%. It demonstrates the viability of detecting the individuals with possible ED risk and distinguishes them from other categories using their biography data. We further conducted a network analysis for investigating the communication network between these categories. Our analysis shows that ED-users are more secretive and self-protective, whereas the healthcare professionals and communicators frequently interact with each other and a wide range of other people. To the best of our knowledge, our research is the first of its kind for identifying the different user categories engaged with ED-focused communications on social media. © 2022

Description: Knowledge is a relevant concept in internet-based cognitive-behaviour therapy (I-CBT), yet little research has sought to understand the role of knowledge in I-CBT for eating disorders. This study addressed this gap. Data were analysed from 293 participants enrolled in a RCT of I-CBT for eating disorder symptoms. A test assessing knowledge of CBT principles and eating disorders was administered before and after I-CBT. Participants had high knowledge to begin with, correctly answering 72% of items. A significant increase in knowledge scores and knowledge confidence was observed after ICBT. While no relationship between the degree of knowledge gain and the degree of symptom improvement emerged, an increase in confidence in one's knowledge was associated with greater symptom improvement. Higher baseline knowledge levels predicted lower likelihood of drop-out and a higher likelihood of adherence, but were unrelated to symptom-level improvement. Findings suggest that while new knowledge can be acquired through I-CBT, the degree of knowledge gain alone is not sufficient to explain improvement in symptoms. Pre-existing knowledge levels may be an important prognostic indicator of patient progress and compliance to I-CBT. Ensuring that patients can correctly apply the key I-CBT skills may be more important than knowledge gain. © 2022 Elsevier Ltd

Description: Finding both efficient and effective quantitative representations for scholars in scientific digital libraries has been a focal point of research. The unprecedented amounts of scholarly datasets, combined with contemporary machine learning and big data techniques, have enabled intelligent and automatic profiling of scholars from this vast and ever-increasing pool of scholarly data. Meanwhile, recent advance in network embedding techniques enables us to mitigate the challenges of large scale and sparsity of academic collaboration networks. In real-world academic social networks, scholars are accompanied with various attributes or features, such as co-authorship and publication records, which result in attributed collaboration networks. It has been observed that both network topology and scholar attributes are important in academic relationship mining. However, previous studies mainly focus on network topology, whereas scholar attributes are overlooked. Moreover, the influence of different scholar attributes are unclear. To bridge this gap, in this work, we present a novel framework of Attributed Collaboration Network Embedding (ACNE) for academic relationship mining. ACNE extracts four types of scholar attributes based on the proposed scholar profiling model, including demographics, research, influence, and sociability. ACNE can learn a low-dimensional representation of scholars considering both scholar attributes and network topology simultaneously. We demonstrate the effectiveness and potentials of ACNE in academic relationship mining by performing collaborator recommendation on two real-world datasets and the contribution and importance of each scholar attribute on scientific collaborator recommendation is investigated. Our work may shed light on academic relationship mining by taking advantage of attributed collaboration network embedding. © 2020 ACM.

Description: Toxic behavior has been impacting players in online multiplayer environments since their inception. Griefing is a type of toxic behavior that focuses on player-to-player in-game disruption and is quite prevalent. However, research into the extent of the impact is still scarce. The present study investigated the impact on the psychological needs of autonomy, competence, and relatedness, as defined by the self-determination theory, for players that perform griefing (the griefers) and those subjected to griefing (the griefed). A sample of 656 respondents from massively multiplayer online role-playing game communities participated in the study. The results discovered that for the majority of players there is no change to their wellbeing, but that when there was a change, the griefed players in general were impacted more negatively, and the perpetrators were impacted more positively. Significant associations also revealed that the magnitude of impacts increased as the player was subjected to or performed griefing more frequently. © 2024 The Authors
