Migration does not diminish the concern migrants have for their kin. Consequently, remote caring is becoming a growing social phenomenon amongst migrants. This paper combines and contextualises three voices of transnational women of Indian heritage from diverse postcolonial nations. In 2020, long-distance care for aging parents during the global pandemic was extremely challenging. As ‘daughters away from home’ residing in Melbourne (Australia), we share our story of managing care, emotional stresses, and honouring family values during the pandemic. Our triadic collage of autoethnographical recounts focuses on worry, grief, and loss, interwoven with an emotionally reflexive lens. Drawing on our discipline areas of music, visual art, and literature we hope our microhistories like innumerable other voices globally are heard, and not subsumed in the mega narrative of the pandemic's impact. Transnational migrants negotiate the multiplicity of ‘here’ and ‘there’ and contested notions of ‘home’ between home and host countries. As transnational migrant women in Australia, we explore these notions and our intimacies with ‘home’ as a complicated, ambivalent set of imaginings, biographies and emotions in relation to place, people and socio-cultural expectations. Using evocative autoethnographic accounts through ‘intimate landscapes of self-confessions’ based on personal experiences our narratives articulate ‘intimacies’ as something other than a direct relationship between self and other. Intimacies become a space within which self and home can be sought and experienced through emotional reflexivity (Holmes, 2010) generated by memories, practices of relationality and place-making through sociocultural encrustations. Skrbiš’s (2008) emphasis on migrant narratives rooted in emotions, Bradatan, Popan and Melton’s (2010) concept of fluid social identities and Ahmed's (2000) challenge to the notion of home as a ‘fixity’ underpin our discussion on identities and positionalities. Reflecting on a ‘notional home,’ we touch upon our ‘practise of emotions and intimacies’ (MacLaren 2014, Everts and Wagner, 2012) in relation to home and host cultures, with reference to gender, race and class in renegotiating our transnational identities. •Exploring notions of ‘home’ and ‘intimacies’ with ‘home’.•Evocative autoethnographic accounts of ‘intimate landscapes of self-confessions’ based on personal experiences.•The relational with others and self - explored through emotional reflexivity.•Transnational women re-negotiating ‘identities’ as wrought by gender and sociocultural encrustations.

Scholars of modernity have taken a particular interest in processes of urbanization and—thinking of Simmel, Benjamin, Mumford and Weber—the character of different varieties of city. From a different angle, notions of urban imaginary have gained greater purchase in the field of contemporary urban studies in comparative analysis of varieties of city. This essay begins with notes on both classical accounts of the city in social theory and current concepts of urban imaginaries. The notes revolve around the essay’s main topic: the institution of cities of New World, specifically those of the United States and Canada. Paralleling Castoriadis’ conception of the imaginary institution, the present author argues for a more exact notion of metropolitan imaginaries, differentiated from the broader subject of urban imaginaries. ‘Metropolitan imaginaries’ denotes processes of urbanization at the heart of networks of migration, transport, and flows of capital and culture. As part of larger imaginaries, metropolises generate immigrant cities. The specific kind of creation in question produces creativity also by concentrating intellectual and creative schools of design in architecture and visual culture. In sum, metropolises are not merely part of networks of connection and creation; they produce networks and act as the hubs of interaction and creativity within larger social imaginaries. The essay explores this argument in the contexts of US and Canadian modernity and state formation, with specific foci on New York, Chicago, and Toronto. The conclusion notes two limitations to the case presented here and sketches planned directions for future research.

An increasing body of research suggests that young people living in Western societies are becoming increasingly individualistic in the way they orientate themselves socially, with further findings suggestive that such orientations may be associated with reduced wellbeing outcomes. Through a systematic review of past research, this paper examines the findings on individualism and the wellbeing of young people living within Western contexts. Findings from our review indicate that whilst individualistic cultures may be associated with higher wellbeing outcomes when compared with collectivistic cultures, such associations tend to disappear when explored at the personal level. Additionally, we find that distinguishing how individualism is measured provides important insight into specific traits associated with individualism that can lead to poorer wellbeing outcomes. Based on the studies reviewed, we propose that whilst the freedom and autonomy embedded within individualistic social orientations can have positive associations, there is an emerging understanding of some of the darker traits that can be associated with these values. These synthesized findings increase our understanding of the connection between individualism, its associated behaviours, and the mental health of young people.

This study aimed to investigate the acceptability, barriers, enablers, perceived benefits, and outcomes in undertaking an exercise intervention using a novel outdoor exercise park designed for senior citizens. This study was a parallel randomised controlled trial with pre- and post-intervention design (outcome assessments at baseline and at eighteen weeks after participation commencement). Twenty-seven independent community-dwelling adults (75.1 ± 7.9 years seventeen females ten males) underwent an interview after completing the eighteen-week exercise intervention. A thematic analysis approach was used to evaluate the content of the interviews. Participants reported that the exercise intervention proposed was very enjoyable and had varied perceived benefits. The exercise intervention has been positively rated by the participants. The main outcomes perceived from their participation were physical (e.g., improvements in muscle strength, balance, flexibility, and gait), psychological (e.g., improved confidence and well-being and reduced depression symptoms) and psychosocial (e.g., improved social interaction). Participants also perceived an improvement on their ability to perform activities of daily living (e.g. climbing stairs, tying shoelaces, and catching public transport). The exercise-park program has been shown to be a well-accepted, novel option for older adults to exercise outdoors and therefore might enhance exercise uptake and attendance and sustain participation in exercise programs for older adults in the community.

Drawing on interviews with, and ethnographic observations of, evangelical Christian musicians with experience of contemporary worship music-as well as secular heavy metal and punk rock-this article analyses the competing value relations underpinning contemporary evangelical musicianship. Developing the work of Joel Robbins on value theory and the anthropology of Christianity and the work of Klisala Harrison on ethnomusicology, this article analyses four examples of different value relations between religious service and expressive individualism: strong monism, stable monism, stable pluralism, unstable pluralism. It is shown through case studies of individual musicians that, whereas strong value monist approaches to evangelical musicianship efface the presence of the subjective self and stable monist approaches suspend its presence, stable pluralism allows both religious and secular vocations to co-exist in separate social spaces, while strong value pluralist approaches to evangelical musicianship emphasise or celebrate the presence of the subjective self and, in so doing, sometimes undermine the ritual aims of congregational worship.

Recruitment of International medical graduates (IMGs) continues to be central to health workforce planning in Australia with the highest number of IMGs per capita globally. Australia's effort to increase IMG numbers is due to shortages and poor distribution of health workforce caused in the 1990s, however there is a need to consider the historical contexts that have embedded IMG recruitment and movement. Using primary and secondary sources of data, this paper examines history to help understand the circumstances and issues surrounding IMGs in contemporary Australia as it grapples with meeting the ever-growing demand for IMGs, particularly in rural areas where the greatest health disadvantage occurs. The analysis reveals that despite Australia's reliance on IMGs, as a group they encounter ongoing stigma, anti-competitive behaviour, public debate, and embargos.

This paper provides a comprehensive measurement study on three video streaming websites with social media features - ‘TED Talks’, ‘xHamster’ and ‘XVideos’. We have analysed 2685 TED videos from 2006 to 2018 to characterise the service. For xHamster and XVideos, active measurements were used to collect unique metadata on almost 3405 and 6721 channels from 2012 to 2019 respectively, which were then analysed. Through these characterisations we gained insight into the main players of the websites – viewers, uploaders and website owners. Our analysis involved the studying of video streaming characteristics such as views, number of uploads, ratings, tags etc. By this we aim to give an overview of the services' current state and compare them with other traditional video streaming services. Our results showed some similar trends to be observed in all three websites such as TED videos and adult channels getting a high number of views despite low injection rate, maintaining a power-law behaviour due to front page recommendations and ratings being underutilised as a feature.Other observations include adult streaming services having a higher number of subscribers per channel. The characterisation results obtained are of value to network operators, content providers, and protocol designers. These results can also be used by content providers to measure what type of content is being watched on their websites. Our study provides a glimpse at how video streaming services function today and the trends they seem to follow. •Measurements and detailed characterisation study based on TED Talks, xHamster, and XVideos.•Comprehensive understanding of the online video streaming domain.•Insights on video streaming services and how they utilise their online social network of users.
