Description: Aim: To explore the experiences of nurses and doctors on the implementation of family presence during resuscitation (FPDR) in Victorian emergency departments. Methods: An interpretative qualitative study design was utilized which incorporated the open ended responses on a state wide Victorian survey of emergency department nurses and doctors. A thematic analysis of the responses was conducted involving data reduction, identification of key words, phrases and themes. Results: A total of 18 emergency departments consented to participate with a mean participant age of 41 years, made up of 91 (81) nurses and 21(19) doctors. The participants came from both metropolitan (64 (57), hospitals 300 – >500 beds) and regional (48 (43), hospitals <80 – 300 beds) health services. There were four emerging themes from the analysis; Depends on the day, impact family have on staff, organisational considerations and incorporating family centred care. Conclusion: There remain a number of variables which have been identified as continuing to create barriers to implementation of family presence during resuscitation that need to be investigated further in order to ensure emergency personnel have consistency of FPDR practice.

Description: The impact of health risk behaviours on the social and economic fabric of society is of concern to social marketers and policy makers. Current research suggests social capital, that is, the positive benefits gained from a relationship with others in the community, plays a key role in addressing health risk behaviours. The current literature on social capital and health is fragmented, and the field has yet to produce an up-to-date synthesis of past findings to help researchers understand the current status of this research area. This article fills this gap with an integrative review of empirical research based on rigorous criteria. Boolean search was used to limit the search to only those articles containing the keywords ‘social capital’ and ‘health risk’ but no limits were applied for country or population of interest or publication start date. Two researchers screened through the title, abstract and introduction of every retrieved article independently according to the inclusion criteria. A total of 105 articles were eligible for further analyses. This article contributes by: (1) providing a structured overview with an aim to disentangle the findings of varied past studies addressing the theme; (2) identifying important gaps in current knowledge; (3) presenting a research agenda that flows logically from the theoretical gaps identified; and lastly (4) proposing a theoretical framework upon which social capital interventions can be designed and executed to mitigate health risk. We hope that the key issues and new directions presented in this paper will provide new impetus in this area of research.

Description: The study aimed to determine prospectively a basketball injury profile, including severity of injury, and to compare the injury profile by gender and standard of competition. Trained observers viewed basketball games, noting the occurrence of injuries, and confirmed injuries by questioning all players on site after the game. Injured players completed a questionnaire and the progress of their injury was monitored by telephone interview. A total of 10,393 basketball participations were observed. An overall injury rate was documented of 18.3 per 1,000 participations (24.7 per 1,000 playing hours), and was comparable by gender and standard of competition. Serious injuries (missing one or more weeks of play) occurred at a rate of 2.89/1,000 participations; with the ankle joint the most common serious injury (1.25/1,000 participations), followed by the calf/anterior leg (0.48/1,000 participations) and knee joint (0.29/1,000 participations). The severity of the injury was significantly associated with the body region injured, with more serious injuries incurred to the lower limb than other body regions (p <.05). The severity of the injury incurred was not related to the standard of competition, gender, age, height, number of games played per week, amount of training undertaken, type of injury, or the mechanism of injury (p> .05).

Description: The objective of this study was to measure academics’ perceptions towards three key dimensions of a higher education institution (HEI) – teaching quality, research quality and internationalisation – the latter two of which have received relatively scant attention in the context of service quality. Using five Malaysian universities as its context, and importance–performance analysis (IPA) as its method of analysis, the study found that the five universities performed well in relation to 14 of the 26 attributes. However, for each of the three dimensions there was a common theme in regards to the service attributes that fell short of expectations. In the case of teaching quality, this theme related to learning, for research quality it was research collaboration, and for internationalisation, it was international recognition. This study makes two key contributions to new knowledge. Firstly, it measures academic perceptions towards service quality as it relates to research and internationalisation, and secondly, it measures such perceptions using IPA. One of the key findings of the study is that the attitudes of those responsible for providing service quality (i.e. academics) may well differ from the HEI decision-makers that endeavour to manage it. © 2019 Australian and New Zealand Marketing Academy

Description: Background: Emergency department staff awareness, access and implementation of advance care directives and goals of care documents and the related patient consent processes are important but not well understood. Methods: A cross-sectional survey using purposive sampling was undertaken at a tertiary hospital's Emergency Department from 15th March to 26th April 2021. Participants were recruited through online platforms. Pre-validated questionnaires were distributed by email or as QR codes on bulletin boards. Data collected included staff: demographics, knowledge, access and implementation of advance care directives and goals of care documentation. Results: One hundred thirty-four (28%) of 476 targeted participants responded with nursing forming largest group. Results showed that previous attendance of advance care planning education was low at 20%. Familiarity with advance care directive documentations was only 19% while with goals of care document was average. 61 (48%) respondents reported ease of accessing electronic documents and 21 (19%) reported feeling very comfortable discussing and setting goals of care with patients (p = <0.01). Conclusions: Staff awareness of advance care directive was poor, while awareness of goals of care was average. There was no association between advance care directives awareness and staff age group, gender, length of: - professional practice, practice at the study site. © 2021

Description: Background: Patient education is a professional obligation for all nurses. Public health messaging in emergency departments during disasters can help prevent further risk or illness for affected communities. In this study, Australian emergency nurse Key Informants share their perceptions and experiences of preventative messaging provided in their departments during disasters and the governance and processes in place to support this practice. Methods: The qualitative phase of a mixed methods study, where semi structured interviews were utilised, and data analysed using a six step Thematic analysis. Results: Three themes were identified: (1) Part of the Job; (2) It's all in the delivery; and (3) Preparation is the key. These themes include concepts involving the confidence and competence of nurses providing messages, what, when and how messages are being given and how prepared both the department and staff are regarding patient education during disaster events. Conclusions: Nurse confidence is a key factor in the delivery of preventative messages during disasters, potentially resulting from a lack of exposure, a junior workforce and minimal training. Leaders agree that departments are not preparing or supporting messaging practice, with an absence of specific training, formal guidelines, and patient education resources; and that improvement is needed. © 2023

Description: Risk management strategies have been used in a wide range of sports. Many issues involved in the implementation of risk management models in sport have not been investigated especially the sport specific and location specific nature of such models. The aim of th1s study was to ascertain the usefulness of Occupational Health & Safety risk management (RM) models in a mainly voluntary sporting organisation and to investigate the requirements of a netball population in developing "user friendly" risk management plans. The industry RM plans were trialled in a rural setting at various netball associations over a six week period. After these trials focus groups and interviews were conducted and the trials evaluated. The requirements of the netball population for a RM plan were investigated using focus groups from regional and rural areas. The industry RM models presented were not generally accepted by the trial participants. They found that the level of expertise required did not exist in netball at the club/team level. The focus groups on the needs of netball for a user friendly model brought out a number of issues including the specifjc needs of rural football/netball leagues. the need to develop strategies for all levels of netball (coach. player. umpire. administrator). Barriers to the uptake of risk 'management models were discussed. An effective RM plan can b~ .developed for voluntary sports associations but they must be specific to the sport and flexible. The RM plan must also take into accoWlt the barriers to implementation fof each sporting culture.

Description: Objective: To measure empathy within the therapeutic relationship between fourth year Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) intern practitioners and their patients, who are first-year students within the same program. Methods: An observational design was used to examine the interns’ empathic communication, evaluated by first year students ‘mystery shoppers’ using the Consultation and Relational Empathy Measure (CARE). First year TCM students went undercover to experience a clinical treatment (acupuncture) by a fourth-year intern in a public Chinese Medicine clinic attached to a metropolitan university in Sydney, Australia. Results: Thirty-nine consultations were assessed by 39 undercover shopper students. The Intern practitioners’ consultation and relational empathy was rated as a mean 76.4% (38.2 points of a possible 50 (median 78%; 39); range 24–50. Significant response differences were found between female and male interns with males rated higher. The underlying elements are presented and discussed. Conclusion: The intern practitioners’ level of empathy averaged 76.4% which is consistent with empathy ratings for international studies of healthcare students. Results showed that males were rated higher for empathy than females, indicating further studies examining the specific behaviours that characterise empathy of different genders would be a useful addition to knowledge and assist teaching. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

Description: Objectives: Naturopaths provide care to patients across all life stages and are visited by some members of their community for assistance with preconception, fertility, pregnancy and postnatal care. This study aims to describe the practice behaviours of naturopaths with a special interest in women's health and who regularly provide care to pregnant women. Methods: A secondary analysis of data collected through the Practitioner Research and Collaboration Initiative (PRACI). Results: Of the 281 naturopaths included in the analysis, 79.4% (n=223) indicated they have an interest in women's health and 70.1% (n=110/157) reported regularly treating pregnant women. Naturopaths who identified as having a clinical interest in women's health were more likely to be female rather than male (OR 12.9) and were more likely to regularly prescribe herbal infusions (OR 3.5). Naturopaths who regularly treated pregnant women were more likely to also treat infants and toddlers (OR 8.8). Naturopaths were also less likely to report having received their first qualifications 15 or more years ago compared to less than 15 years ago if they reported regularly treating pregnant women (OR 0.1–0.2). Conclusions: The self-reported practice behaviours of naturopaths providing care to women for reproductve and maternal health suggest a possible alignment with the domains prioritised in global health recommendations, however the degree to which naturopaths are providing accurate information is unclear. Naturopaths may play a role in the contemporary delivery of maternal and child health care, but a closer examination is needed to ensure women are receiving the appropriate care during this important life stage. © 2024 The Authors
