To assess the impact of land-use change and groundwater pumping on wetland ecosystems, there is a need to develop a better understanding of their hydrology. Description: Techniques for landslide risk management in Australia have evolved considerably since the publication of the first formal process in 1985. The Australian Geomechanics Society recently published the next generation of updated landslide risk documents in 2007. The estimation of landslide likelihood is fundamental to the outcome of the landslide risk management process. However, experienced practitioners still regard this component as one of the most difficult and challenging aspects of the assessment as it requires information about the age of landslides, an understanding of landscape processes and the rate of slope evolution. Such information is difficult to obtain and is often not a core competency among practitioners undertaking landslide risk assessment. In order to provide insight into the methods of estimating and constraining landslide likelihood, a number of different geomorphological approaches are herewith reviewed through a series of selected Australian cases studies. Whilst the case studies highlight inherent limitations and uncertainties they also demonstrate how geomorphological studies can provide validation and constraints to a quantification of likelihood and ultimately risk.

Description: On February 9, 2014, the town of Morwell in Victoria, Australia, was confronted with several bushfires, resulting in a blaze at the Morwell open cut coal mine adjacent to the Hazelwood power station. For 45 days, the local communities were impacted by smoke, ash, and reports of raised carbon monoxide levels. The duration of the crisis placed an unprecedented strain on the capacity of the community and the authorities to adequately respond. Many see Morwell as vulnerable to future events because it is surrounded by coal mines, power stations, forests, and pine plantations. Drawing on interviews from key stakeholders in the community and a detailed analysis of media reports and social media, this chapter examines the factors that both harm and promote community resilience. It emphasizes the complexity of resilience and the importance of communal narratives as community members react to and recover from traumatic experiences and unknown futures.

Description: The hydraulic behavior of Victorian brown coal has been studied under low pressure confining conditions. A triaxial constant head permeameter was constructed to carry out permeability tests under alternative confining conditions. Test results from alternative constant head test methods were found to be different indicating higher than expected internal storage due to the possible existence of gas in the coal matrix and/or compressibility of the coal grains. A conceptual model of brown coal with disconnected gas bubbles was proposed to explain the observed variation of hydraulic behavior. In this model, the compressible gas bubbles are assumed to be trapped between compressible coal particles. A numerical model was developed to gain insights into the hydraulic influence of these factors and the model was used to simulate the test process. Constant hydraulic conductivity was assumed. The results from the model and the tests are found to compare well. The model explains most but not all of the observed behavior.

Description: Cross-beam connections are widely used in welded thin-walled structures made of rectangular or square hollow sections mainly due to the connection's requiring less welding and no member cutting. Re-welding or bolted splicing are not suitable for repairing or strengthening fatigue cracked cross-beam connections. In this research, a new method using Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer composites (CFRPs) is proposed. Repair/strengthening are conducted for thin-walled RHS cross-beam connections at different levels of fatigue damage before constant amplitude fatigue experiments are conducted again on the specimens. Fatigue test results of unstrengthened intact connections are also presented for the purpose of comparison. The results show that the proposed retrofitting method is effective in repairing/strengthening fatigue-damaged thin-walled cross-beam connections when the connections are not severely cracked.

Description: Clayey soils undergo shrinkage during desiccation. When shrinkage is restrained by the boundary conditions or by internal stresses, tensile stresses are generated within the soil body. These stresses eventually produce tension crackswhich create problematic situations in many engineering applications. Presence of shrinkage cracks is significant in many applications such as earth embankments, landfill clay liners, foundations, and road pavements. Desiccation or thermally induced induced shrinkage cracks cause problems in other disciplines as well, for example in mining engineering, agricultural engineering and materials engineering. It is important to understand the shrinking behavior of soil in order to study the desiccation crack development in clayey soils. Free shrinkage of slurry clay was observed in laboratory experiments. Image analysis, along with Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique was used to analyze the data obtained. Relatively small specimens 100 mm longwere used so that strains could be measured to high accuracy.Werribee clay, an expansive clay found in West Melbourne, was used in the experiments. Basic clay properties include liquid limit of 127%, plasticity index of 101 and linear shrinkage of 22%. This paper discusses the relationship between strains (vertical, horizontal, and volumetric), displacements, water content, degree of saturation and void ratio. Shrinkage strain development prior to crack initiation was examined to identify crack failure condition.

Description: A large portion of the Irish railway network contains earthworks that were poorly constructed mainly because they were built over 100 years ago when scientific understanding of soil behaviour was not nearly as advanced as it is today. Also, engineers involved in the construction of these structures had to work with often unsuitable local materials as sound bulk fill was not able to be transported significant distances. In order to improve the information obtained from site investigation of these poorly constructed earthworks a number of authors have recently suggested complimenting direct geotechnical investigations with a non-invasive geophysical assessment. In addition to providing a review of the factors which cause failure of earthworks, this paper also discusses the capabilities of three geophysical techniques, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) and Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW) for assessing the stability of railway earthworks. Examples of the use of each technique are provided from forensic investigations into railway earthwork slope failures in Ireland.

Description: Application of high tensile steel in various structural forms such as rolled or fabricated sections is currently increasing due its mechanical and economic advantages. Experimental investigations show the distinct plastic behavior of high tensile steel with grades greater than 700 MPa damaged under reversed tension-compression loading scenarios compared to the hardening performance of lower grades of steel. This paper investigates a combined nonlinear plastic model to predict the stress-strain equations of grades 800 and 1200 steel extracted from circular tubes under very low cycle structural damage. In the numerical modelling phase, relevant parameters are calibrated and model is verified against hysteretic experimental results. The numerical results provide a simulation tool for structures consisting of high tensile steel tubes under seismic loads.
