Energy storage for short-term frequency stability enhancement in low-inertia power systems

  • Description: Power systems with large scale integration of inverter interfaced generation plants become vulnerable to short term frequency instability. The short term frequency stability is related to limiting the RoCoF and frequency nadir within acceptable standards following a contingency. Failure to limit frequency nadir and RoCoF can result in the activation of RoCoF relays and under frequency load shedding relays, leading to generation disconnection and unintentional load shedding. This can result in blackout. In this work energy storage system (ESS) is deployed in the two-area power system for improvement of short term frequency stability. A capacity optimization algorithm and dispatch scheme are developed for the ESS. The capacity estimation algorithm determines the required capacity of ESS. The proposed algorithm estimates the required capacity of energy storage while considering the complete dynamics of conventional generators, wind turbine, and power conversion systems. The dispatch scheme operates the ESS to inject the real power in the system to improve the short term frequency stability. The proposed methodology is verified in PSCAD. Simulation results depict the effectiveness of the proposed approach. © 2020 University of Tasmania.

  • Description: This article proposes a supply chain-based green hydrogen microgrid modelling for a number of remote Australian communities. Green hydrogen can be used as an emissions-free fuel source for electricity generation in places where large-scale renewable energy production is impossible due to land availability, population, or government regulations. This research focuses on the Torres Strait Island communities in northern Australia, where the transition from diesel to renewable electricity generation is difficult due to very limited land availability on most islands. Due to geographical constraints, low population and smaller electrical load, the green hydrogen needs to be sourced from somewhere else. This research presents a green hydrogen supply chain model that leverages the land availability of one island to produce hydrogen to supply other island communities. In addition, this research presents a model of producing and transporting green hydrogen while supplying cheaper electricity to the communities at focus. The study has used a transitional scenario planning approach and the HOMER simulation platform to find the least-cost solution. Based on the results, a levelised cost of energy range of AU$0.42 and AU$0.44 was found. With the help of a green hydrogen supply chain, CO2 emissions at the selected sites could be cut by 90 %. This study can be used as a guide for small clustered communities that could not support or justify large-scale renewable generation facilities but need more opportunities to install renewable generation. © 2023

  • Description: The transition from traditional fuel-dependent energy systems to renewable energy-based systems has been extensively embraced worldwide. Demand-side flexibility is essential to support the power grid with carbon-free generation (e.g., solar, wind.) in an intermittent nature. As extensive energy consumers, commercial and industrial (C&I) consumers can play a key role by extending their flexibility and participating in demand response. Onsite renewable generation by consumers can reduce the consumption from the grid, while energy storage systems (ESSs) can support variable generation and shift demand by storing energy for later use. Both technologies can increase the flexibility and benefit by integrating with the demand response. However, a lack of knowledge about the applicability of increasing flexibility hinders the active participation of C&I consumers in demand response programs. This survey paper provides an overview of demand response and energy storage systems in this context following a methodology of a step-by-step literature review covering the period from 2013 to 2023. The literature review focuses on the application of energy storage systems and onsite renewable generation integrated with demand response for C&I consumers and is presented with an extensive analysis. This survey also examines the demand response participation and potential of wastewater treatment plants. The extended research on the wastewater treatment plant identifies the potential opportunities of coupling biogas with PV, extracting the thermal energy and onsite hydrogen production. Finally, the survey analysis is summarised, followed by critical recommendations for future research. © 2024 by the authors.

  • Description: This paper assessed the small-signal stability performance of a multi-converter-based direct current microgrid (DCMG). The oscillation and potential interactions between critical modes are evaluated. First, the complete analytical model of the DCMG is developed with the converter and associated controllers. Three methodologies, impedance scanning, eigenvalue analysis, and time-domain simulation, along with the fast Fourier transform (FFT) analysis, have been used to comprehensively investigate the oscillations and interactions. The simulation results show inherent weak modes, with a wide range of oscillations in the studied DCMG, which may destabilize the system under disturbances. Based on the sensitivity analysis, controller gains and DC-link capacitance are identified as the most critical parameters and substantially influence the weak modes leading to oscillations, interactions, and resonance. Finally, the performance of the various control synthesis methods is compared. This examination would help the researchers, planning, and design engineers to design and stably operate a multi converter-based DC microgrid. © 2023 by the authors.

  • Description: With the increasing number of renewable generations, the prospects of long-distance bulk power transmission impels the expansion of point-to-point High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) grid to an emerging Multi-terminal high-voltage Direct Current (MTDC) grid. The DC grid protection with faster selectivity enhances the operational continuity of the MTDC grid. Based on the reactor voltage gradient (RVG), this paper proposes a fast and reliable fault identification technique with precise discrimination of internal and external DC faults. Considering the voltage developed across the modular multilevel converter (MMC) reactor and DC terminal reactor, the RVG is formulated to characterise an internal and external DC fault. With a window of four RVG samples, the fault is detected and discriminated by the proposed main protection scheme amidst a period of five sampling intervals. Depending on the reactor current increment, a backup protection scheme is also proposed to enhance the protection reliability. The performance of the proposed scheme is validated in a four-terminal MTDC grid. The results under meaningful fault events show that the proposed scheme is capable to identify the DC fault within millisecond. Moreover, the evaluation of the protection sensitivity and robustness reveals that the proposed scheme is highly selective for a wide range of fault resistances and locations, higher sampling frequencies, and irrelevant transient events. Furthermore, the comparison results exhibit that the proposed RVG method improves the discrimination performance of the protection scheme and thereby, proves to be a better choice for future DC fault identification.

  • Description: Historical data offers a wealth of knowledge to the users. However, often restrictively mammoth that the information cannot be fully extracted, synthesized, and analyzed efficiently for an application such as the forecasting of variable generator outputs. Moreover, the accuracy of the prediction method is vital. Therefore, a trade-off between accuracy and efficacy is required for the data-driven energy forecasting method. It has been identified that the hybrid approach may outperform the individual technique in minimizing the error while challenging to synthesize. A hybrid deep learning-based method is proposed for the output prediction of the solar photovoltaic systems (i.e. proposed PV system) in Australia to obtain the trade-off between accuracy and efficacy. The historical dataset from 1990-2013 in Australian locations (e.g. North Queensland) are used to train the model. The model is developed using the combination of multivariate long and short-term memory (LSTM) and convolutional neural network (CNN). The proposed hybrid deep learning (LSTM-CNN) is compared with the existing neural network ensemble (NNE), random forest, statistical analysis, and artificial neural network (ANN) based techniques to assess the performance. The proposed model could be useful for generation planning and reserve estimation in power systems with high penetration of solar photovoltaics (PVs) or other renewable energy sources (RESs). © 2013 IEEE.

  • Description: Recently, the modular multi-level converter (MMC) based HVDC has become a popular method for integrating offshore wind and other renewable sources into the AC grid. Several studies have reported the possible use of MMC-HVDC to enhance grid strength. However, the control concept, parameterization, and the non-linearity related to fault-ride through behavior of MMC-HVDC greatly affects the dynamics of the host AC system. With the increasing number of HVDC and the stochastic behavior of current power systems, it is essential to comprehensively assess the impact of various control concepts of HVDC and control parametrization on the AC system. An equivalent and modified model of the Great British system has been used for this analysis with the enhanced reactive power and voltage control model. The various tuning and parameterization of the phase-locked loop control system are considered. The simulations conducted using the DIgSILENT PowerFactory show the relations of the control parameterization with the rotor angle and the short-term voltage stability of the system. © 2023 IEEE.

  • Description: Forced disturbances (FDs) with non-stationary frequencies can sequentially resonate from electromechanical modes (EMs) to sub/super synchronous modes (SSMs) and thus lead to non-stationary forced oscillations (FOs). Previous FO damping controllers designed for specified frequency bands may not be able to suppress the non-stationary FOs. This paper proposes a unified FO damping controller design method to deal with all oscillations caused by non-stationary FOs. The model of a power system with non-stationary FOs is obtained by a continuous model detection and identification of measured signals, which does not require any value of the system parameters. Accordingly, four stability indices, i.e., robustness, interaction, frequency, and damping ratio of the EMs and SSMs, can be calculated from the estimated model. At each operating point, these indices are monitored and used to optimally design the unified FO damping controller. The effectiveness of the proposed unified FO damping controller is verified in the modified Southeast Australian power system with converter controlled-based generations under various operating points and FO conditions. © 2022 Elsevier Ltd

  • Description: Renewable power generations including flexible demand and energy storage systems leverage significant changes in network operation. Thereby, power systems with high renewable penetration manifest deteriorated resilience to disturbances. Hence, the stable operation of the system could be affected. With a paradigm shift, dynamic voltage stability becomes one of the major concerns for the transmission system operators (TSOs). Predicting the dynamic voltage signature for the transmission system with high penetration of renewables is essential to assist in selecting appropriate corrective control. This paper utilized a comprehensive assessment framework to identify the dynamic voltage signature of the power system with PV and various loads. The voltage recovery index has been chosen as the quantifiable index to extricate the dynamic voltage signature. The applicability of the proposed framework is discussed using simulation studies on the IEEE-39 bus test system. © 2020 IEEE.

  • Description: Large-scale renewable energy-based power plants are becoming attractive technically and economically for generation mix around the world. Nevertheless, network operation has significantly changed due to the rapid integration of renewable energy in supply side. The integration of more renewable resources, especially inverter-based generation, deteriorates power system resilience to disturbances and substantially affects stable operations. The dynamic voltage stability becomes one of the major concerns for the transmission system operators (TSOs) due to the limited capabilities of inverter-based resources (IBRs). A heavily loaded and stressed renewable rich grid is susceptible to fault-induced delayed voltage recovery. Hence, it is crucial to examine the system response upon disturbances, to understand the voltage signature, to determine the optimal location and sizing of grid-connected IBRs. Moreover, the IBRs fault contribution mechanism investigation is essential in adopting additional grid support devices, control coordination, and the selection of appropriate corrective control schemes. This article utilizes a comprehensive assessment framework to assess power systems' dynamic voltage signature with large-scale PV under different realistic operating conditions. Several indices quantifying load bus voltage recovery have been used to explore the system' s steady-state, transient response, and voltage trajectories. The recovery indices help extricate the signature and influence of IBRs. The proposed framework's applicability is carried out on the New England IEEE-39 bus test system using the DIgSILENT platform. © 2013 IEEE.

  • Description: Different demand response (DR) mechanisms available in the Australian national electricity market (NEM), such as wholesale, ancillary, emergency, and network DR could provide significant flexibility to maintain and enhance power system security and reliability. Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) is continually reviewing global practices working with different states and territories, and revising the legislative and technical requirements for integrating more DR participants into the national electricity market (NEM). Commercial and Industrial (CandI) customers have a higher potential to participate in DR with flexible larger loads and onsite distributed energy resources (DERs). The CandI customers can reduce their energy bills and earn incentives from operators through DR participation. This paper provides a comprehensive review of different types of DR mechanisms that have been used in the Australian NEM. Technical and legislative requirements to participate in DR for CandI customers have been identified and summarised. Furthermore, the challenges for DR participation and potential benefits have been highlighted. Finally, a look-up table is prepared to identify the suitability of CandI customers to participate in one or multiple DR mechanisms potentially. The findings of this paper can be used as a guiding tool for CandI customers to understand technical and legislative requirements for participating in different DR mechanisms in Australia and select the most appropriate DR mechanisms for maximising their benefits. © 2022 IEEE.

  • Description: The efficacy of long-distance and bulk power transmission largely depends on the efficient control and reliable operation of a multiterminal high-voltage direct current (MT-HVdc) grid, more precisely, a meshed HVdc grid. The capability of enduring the dc grid fault eventually enhances the reliability and improves the dynamic performance of the grid. This article investigates the operation and control of an AC/multiterminal dc (MTDC) system with bipolar topology incorporating the dc grid protection schemes. Based on the scale of a circuit breaker's operating time, the performance of three different protection strategies is compared and analyzed using DIgSILENT PowerFactory. Simulation results explicitly reveal that the dynamic performance of the MTDC grid significantly deteriorates with the slow functioning of the protection schemes, followed by a dc grid fault. Besides, prolonged recovery time causes a substantial loss of power infeed and affects the ac/dc grid's stability. Finally, to assess the frailty of the MTDC grid, a transient energy stability index is proposed considering the voltage variation in the prestate and poststate fault clearing interval. Relevant case studies are performed on the MTDC grid using an analytical approach and nonlinear simulation studies to validate the effectiveness of the proposed index. © 2007-2012 IEEE.

  • Description: Currently, renewable energy-based generators are considered worldwide to achieve net zero targets. However, the stochastic nature of renewable energy systems leads to regulation and control challenges for power system operators, especially in remote and regional grids with smaller footprints. A hybrid system (i.e., solar, wind, biomass, energy storage) could minimise this issue. Nevertheless, the hybrid system is not possible to develop in many islands due to the limited land area, geographical conditions, and others. Hydrogen as a carrier of clean energy can be used in locations where the installation of extensive or medium-scale renewable energy facilities is not permissible due to population density, geographical constraints, government policies, and regulatory issues. This paper presents a techno-economic assessment of designing a green hydrogen-based microgrid for a remote island in North-east Australia. This research work determines the optimal sizing of microgrid components using green hydrogen technology. Due to the abovementioned constraints, the green hydrogen production system and the microgrid proposed in this paper are located on two separate islands. The paper demonstrates three cost-effective scenarios for green hydrogen production, transportation, and electricity generation. This work has been done using Hybrid Optimisation Model for Multiple Energy Resources or HOMER Pro simulation platform. Simulation results show that the Levelized Cost of Energy using hydrogen technology can vary from AU$0.37/kWh to AU$1.08/kWh depending on the scenarios and the variation of key parameters. This offers the potential to provide lower-cost electricity to the remote community. Furthermore, the CO2 emission could be reduced by 17,607,77 kg/year if the renewable energy system meets 100% of the electricity demand. Additionally, the sensitivity analysis in this paper shows that the size of solar PV and wind used for green hydrogen production can further be reduced by 50%. The sensitivity analysis shows that the system could experience AU$0.03/kWh lower levelized cost if the undersea cable is used to transfer the generated electricity between islands instead of hydrogen transportation. However, it would require environmental approval and policy changes as the islands are located in the Great Barrier Reef. © 2023 The Authors

  • Description: This paper investigates the impact of active current ramping rate (rrpwr) of Large-Scale photovoltaic (LSPV) plants on the short-term dynamic voltage stability. Thus, the rrpwr is adapted according to the fault distance from the LSPV plant Point of Integration (POI). The investigation shows that when a fault occurs closer to POI, lower rrpwr helps to achieve better voltage recovery. Lower rrpwr means slower active power recovery following active power curtailment activated by a grid fault. Therefore, lower rrpwr will not compromise the reactive power injection as needed. Based on the minimal improvement in the voltage recovery at POI, it can be concluded that the adaptive rrpwr is not an influential factor to improve the short-term dynamic voltage stability. © 2021 IEEE

  • Description: Energy storage is recognized as a potential solution to alleviate the impacts of inertia reduction and intermittency due to the integration of inverter based renewable energy sources (RES) in power systems. Out of various rapid responsive energy storage technologies, supercapacitor energy storage (SCES) is the most promising technology for synthetic inertia support. Because the SCES has high power density, very small response time, and large cycle life. In this paper, a dynamic derivative-droop control strategy is developed for SCES to provide the synthetic inertia in low inertia power system. The proposed strategy overcomes the limitations of separately applied derivative and droop controls. In addition, the use of time varying gains (referred as dynamic) instead of fixed gains improves the performance compared to derivative-droop coordinated control. Different types of events are created at different penetration levels of RES to test the robustness of the proposed control. A comparison, based on RoCoF and frequency nadir, between the derivative, droop, derivative-droop coordinated and the proposed controls is presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed control approach. © 2020 IEEE.

  • Description: Inverter-Based Energy Resources (IBERs) have become an ordinary portion of the generation mix in power systems. Furthermore, converter-based technology has come to dominate modern motor loads on the consumption side. This transition in components towards accommodating power electronic devices alters the dynamic response of the power system. This paper investigates the impact of these elements on the dynamic stability of the power system. Firstly, this study successes to optimize a suitable model for converter-based motor loads. Secondly, indices of transient and voltage stabilities are used to quantify the strength of the power system at different circumstances incorporating the induction motor loads. Finally, this analysis provides an insight into the mutual interactions between transient and voltage stabilities. It is concluded that converter-based motor loads improve the voltage recovery when compared with direct-connected induction motors. However, the system is vulnerable to transient stability with the proliferation of inverter-based motor loads when IBERs dominant in the generation mix. © 2020 IEEE.
