- Description: Staphylococcus cohnii subsp. urealyticus strain SW120 was isolated from the ear swab of a healthy dog. The isolate is resistant to methicillin and fusidic acid. - Description: Dingoes feature prominently in Australian Aboriginal Creation stories and are also widely regarded as having an intricate relationship with Aboriginal people. A large volume of anthropological work on the complex relationship between Australian Aboriginals and dingoes has determined a considerable uniformity in the human-dingo relationship across northern Australia. Whilst there are many parallels between northern and southern Aboriginal Australia, this reconsideration of the archival record explores the hitherto rarely considered evidence of the relationship between Aboriginal people, British colonizers in Victoria (south-eastern Australia), and dingoes. The data provide an insight into the unique relationship, which indicates some striking differences between northern and southern Aboriginal Australia; especially the utilitarian and symbolic significance of dingoes for Aboriginal communities in south-eastern Australia and how dingoes were used by both Aboriginal people and the colonial usurpers in a bid to spatially dislocate each other. © ISAZ 2013.

- Description: This article reviews evidence for the existence of attachment bonds directed toward humans in dog-human and horse-human dyads. It explores each species' alignment with the four features of a typical attachment bond: separation-related distress, safe haven, secure base and proximity seeking. While dog-human dyads show evidence of each of these, there is limited alignment for horse-human dyads. These differences are discussed in the light of the different selection paths of domestic dogs and horses as well as the different contexts in which the two species interact with humans. The role of emotional intelligence in humans as a potential mediator for human-animal relationships, attachment or otherwise, is also examined. Finally, future studies, which may clarify the interplay between attachment, human-animal relationships and emotional intelligence, are proposed. Such avenues of research may help us explore the concepts of trust and bonding that are often said to occur at the dog-human and horse-human interface. © 2015.
The use of detector dogs in the diagnosis of nematode infections in sheep feces

- Description: This study was conducted to assess a dog's ability to differentiate between nematode-infected and uninfected sheep feces. Two German shepherd bitches were trained for scent detection over a 6-month period using operant/clicker conditioning. On completion of the training, testing was undertaken with 9 paper bags containing uninfected and 1 with infected feces, placed randomly around a circle. The dog and handler were not able to observe the placement of the bags. The 10th bag contained feces from sheep infected with either Teladorsagia circumcincta, Trichostrongylus vitrinus, Haemonchus contortus, or a mixed infection of all 3 species. Over 80 trials the dog had a mean success rate of greater than 80% in the detection of T. circumcincta- or T. vitrinus-infected feces and H. contortus-infected feces was detected with a slightly lower reliability of 76%, but mixed infections were detected at 92% reliability (one-proportion binomial analysis, P < 0.05). Trials were then undertaken to determine the time after administration of infective larvae that the dog was first able to differentiate T. circumcincta infection in sheep feces. At 7 days postinfection (dpi), the dog was capable of identifying T. circumcincta at least 85% of the time. These trials demonstrate that dogs are able to detect the common parasite infections in sheep with reliability equal to immunological assays. The results suggest that diagnostics based on odor detection using dogs to identify signature odors which could then be used to create sensitive detection devices might allow parasite detection on-farm and on all sheep in a flock.

- Description: Prion diseases (e.g. Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), variant CJD (vCJD), Gerstmann-Sträussler-Scheinker syndrome (GSS), Fatal Familial Insomnia (FFI) and Kuru in humans, scrapie in sheep, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE or 'mad-cow' disease) and chronic wasting disease (CWD) in cattles) are invariably fatal and highly infectious neurodegenerative diseases affecting humans and animals. However, by now there have not been some effective therapeutic approaches or medications to treat all these prion diseases. Rabbits, dogs, and horses are the only mammalian species reported to be resistant to infection from prion diseases isolated from other species. Recently, the β2-α2 loop has been reported to contribute to their protein structural stabilities. The author has found that rabbit prion protein has a strong salt bridge ASP177-ARG163 (like a taut bow string) keeping this loop linked. This paper confirms that this salt bridge also contributes to the structural stability of horse prion protein. Thus, the region of β2-α2 loop might be a potential drug target region. Besides this very important salt bridge, other four important salt bridges GLU196-ARG156-HIS187, ARG156-ASP202 and GLU211-HIS177 are also found to greatly contribute to the structural stability of horse prion protein.
