- Description: We discuss the implementation of a number of modern methods of global and nonsmooth continuous optimization, based on the ideas of Rubinov, in a programming library GANSO. GANSO implements the derivative-free bundle method, the extended cutting angle method, dynamical system-based optimization and their various combinations and heuristics. We outline the main ideas behind each method, and report on the interfacing with Matlab and Maple packages.

- Description: The problem of cluster analysis is formulated as a problem of nonsmooth, nonconvex optimization. An algorithm for solving the latter optimization problem is developed which allows one to significantly reduce the computational efforts. This algorithm is based on the so-called discrete gradient method. Results of numerical experiments are presented which demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

- Description: We study functions that can be represented as the sum of minima of convex functions. Minimization of such functions can be used for approximation of finite sets and their clustering. We suggest to use the local discrete gradient (DG) method [Bag99] and the hybrid method between the cutting angle method and the discrete gradient method (DG+CAM) [BRZ05b] for the minimization of these functions. We report and analyze the results of numerical experiments.

- Description: In wireless local area network (WLAN), signal coverage is obtained by proper placement of access points (APs). The impact of incorrect placement of APs is significant. If they are placed too far apart, they generate a coverage gap but if they are too close to each other, this leads to excessive co-channel interferences. In this paper, we describe a mathematical model we have developed to find the optimal number and location of APs. To solve the problem, we use an optimization algorithm developed at the University of Ballarat called discrete gradient algorithm. Results indicate that our model is able to solve optimal coverage problems for different numbers of users.

- Description: The research presented in this thesis is two-fold: on the one hand, major data mining problems are reformulated as mathematical programming problems. These problems should be carefully designed, since from their formulation depends the efficiency, perhaps the existence, of the solvers. On the other hand, optimisation methods are adapted to solve these problems, most of which are nonsmooth and nonconvex. This part is delicate, as the solution is often required to be good and obtained fast. Numerical experiments on real-world datasets are presented and analysed.

- Description: This paper examines differences in the choice of similarity measures with respect to their sensitivity to outliers in clustering problems, formulated as mathematical programming problems. Namely, we are focusing on the study of norms (norm-based similarity measures) and convex functions of norms (function-norm-based similarity measures). The study consists of two parts: the study of theoretical models and numerical experiments. The main result of this study is a criterion for the outliers sensitivity with respect to the corresponding similarity measure. In particular, the obtained results show that the norm-based similarity measures are not sensitive to outliers whilst a very widely used square of the Euclidean norm similarity measure (least squares) is sensitive to outliers. - Description: The process of sleep stage identification is a labour-intensive task that involves the specialized interpretation of the polysomnographic signals captured from a patient's overnight sleep session. Automating this task has proven to be challenging for data mining algorithms because of noise, complexity and the extreme size of data. In this paper we apply nonsmooth optimization to extract key features that lead to better accuracy. We develop a specific procedure for identifying K-complexes, a special type of brain wave crucial for distinguishing sleep stages. The procedure contains two steps. We first extract "easily classified" K-complexes, and then apply nonsmooth optimization methods to extract features from the remaining data and refine the results from the first step. Numerical experiments show that this procedure is efficient for detecting K-complexes. It is also found that most classification methods perform significantly better on the extracted features. © 2012 Australian Mathematical Society.

- Description: We define the excess degree \xi (P) of a d-polytope P as 2f1 - df0, where f0 and f1 denote the number of vertices and edges, respectively. This parameter measures how much P deviates from being simple. It turns out that the excess degree of a d-polytope does not take every natural number: the smallest possible values are 0 and d - 2, and the value d - 1 only occurs when d = 3 or 5. On the other hand, for fixed d, the number of values not taken by the excess degree is finite if d is odd, and the number of even values not taken by the excess degree is finite if d is even. The excess degree is then applied in three different settings. First, it is used to show that polytopes with small excess (i.e., \xi (P) < d) have a very particular structure: provided d ot = 5, either there is a unique nonsimple vertex, or every nonsimple vertex has degree d + 1. This implies that such polytopes behave in a similar manner to simple polytopes in terms of Minkowski decomposability: they are either decomposable or pyramidal, and their duals are always indecomposable. Second, we characterize completely the decomposable d-polytopes with 2d + 1 vertices (up to combinatorial equivalence). Third, all pairs (f0, f1), for which there exists a 5-polytope with f0 vertices and f1 edges, are determined.

- Description: In this paper, we derive a necessary condition for a best approximation by piecewise polynomial functions of varying degree from one interval to another. Based on these results, we obtain a characterization theorem for the polynomial splines with fixed tails, that is the value of the spline is fixed in one or more knots (external or internal). We apply nonsmooth nonconvex analysis to obtain this result, which is also a necessary and sufficient condition for inf-stationarity in the sense of Demyanov-Rubinov. This paper is an extension of a paper where similar conditions were obtained for free tails splines. The main results of this paper are essential for the development of a Remez-type algorithm for free knot spline approximation.

- Description: Blind and Mani, and later Kalai, showed that the face lattice of a simple polytope is determined by its graph, namely its 1-skeleton. Call a vertex of a d-polytope nonsimple if the number of edges incident to it is more than d. We show that (1) the face lattice of any d-polytope with at most two nonsimple vertices is determined by its 1-skeleton; (2) the face lattice of any d-polytope with at most d- 2 nonsimple vertices is determined by its 2-skeleton; and (3) for any d> 3 there are two d-polytopes with d- 1 nonsimple vertices, isomorphic (d- 3) -skeleta and nonisomorphic face lattices. - Description: The general constrained polynomial programming problem (GPP) is considered in this paper. Problem (GPP) has a broad range of applications and is proved to be NP-hard. Necessary global optimality conditions for problem (GPP) are established. Then, a new local optimization method for this problem is proposed by exploiting these necessary global optimality conditions. A global optimization method is proposed for this problem by combining this local optimization method together with an auxiliary function.
