- Description: Traditional QoS routing protocols find paths that meet the QoS requirements while discovering routes. The chosen route is used while the QoS is met. If the QoS is violated rerouting takes place. Violation of QoS may be unacceptable for delay sensitive traffic. We introduce a preemptive QoS re-routing scheme. The end-to-end delay of packets in each session is monitored and if it seems likely that QoS violation might occur, a preemptive QoS rerouting process is initiated. This helps maintain QoS in dynamic wireless ad hoc networks. Schemes for triggering QoS re-routing are investigated. We have reduced the number of late packets and improved the overall end-to-end delay of the communications.

- Description: Trade-off between energy-efficiency and reliability in wireless sensor networks is application dependent. Without the reliability, the extended lifetime of a network is of limited use. Due to the inherent correlation between reliability and congestion, it is necessary to reduce congestion to improve reliability. Existing congestion control algorithms in wireless sensor networks are reactive. They attempt to reduce the congestion only after its detection. In this paper, we present Location Aided Congestion Aware Routing (LACAR) protocol that proactively avoids congestion formation and improves data delivery success rate in data gathering wireless sensor networks. Location, energy and congestion information of neighbours together with the location information of the base station determine appropriate routes. Simulation results show that LACAR achieves high packet success rate in an energy-efficient way.

- Description: Vibration signals used for abnormality detection in machine health monitoring (MHM) suffer from significant variation in the patterns with fault severity. This variation results in overlap among the features extracted against different fault types and causes severe degradation in fault detection accuracy. This paper identifies a newfangled problem originated by severity variant features and mitigates this impact by using appropriate feature selection based on Fisher linear discriminant (FLD) and Bhattacharyya distance (BCD) to enhance fault classification accuracy. In order to validate the performance of the proposed scheme, training and testing data are obtained from different severity levels. To capture the non-stationary behavior of vibration signal, robust tools such as wavelet transform (WT) for time-frequency analysis is employed. Simulation studies show that the proposed scheme ensures good fault diagnostic accuracy even if training and testing data belong to different severity levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Description: Inchoate fault detection for machine health monitoring (MHM) demands high level of fault classification accuracy under poor signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) which persists in most industrial environment. Vibration signals are extensively used in signature matching for abnormality detection and diagnosis. In order to guarantee improved performance under poor SNR, feature extraction based on statistical parameters which are immune to Gaussian noise becomes inevitable. This paper proposes a novel framework for adaptive feature extraction based on higher order cumulants (HOCs) and wavelet transform (WT) (AFHCW) for MHM. Features extracted based on HOCs have the tendency to mitigate the impact of Gaussian noise. WT provides better time and frequency domain analysis for the nonstationary signals such as vibration in which spectral contents vary with respect to time. In AFHCW, stationary WT is used to ensure linear processing on the vibration data prior to feature extraction, and it helps in mitigating the impact of poor SNR. K-nearest neighbor classifier is used to categorize the type of the fault. Simulation studies show that the proposed scheme outperforms the existing techniques in terms of classification accuracy under poor SNR.

- Description: Vertical handover mechanism for a WLAN-cellular heterogeneous network could be made efficient with the use of context aware admission control strategy. Existing admission control methods aim to provide satisfactory quality of service, but rely solely on the availability of wireless resources in the target network. We propose that the admission control in WLAN should make use of social connectivity context of users in its coverage area to classify local and global traffic. In this paper, we introduce a novel Social-Connectivity-aware Vertical Handover (SCVH) scheme, which performs admission control using connectivity graph data from the online social networking services. A higher importance of visiting node for users resident in WLAN, advocates a higher priority for granting admission. We employ graph-theoretic concept of centrality to calculate the social importance of potential handing-over nodes. By giving handover precedence to higher-centrality nodes, we achieve an optimal allocation of wireless resources in addition to improved quality of service. The proposed handover strategy offers an additional advantage of reducing global social network traffic.

- Description: Video Stabilization is now considered an old problem which is almost solved but there are still some connecting problems which needs research attention. One of such issues arises due to multiple unstable videos streams coming from multiple sensors which often contain complementary information. To enhance system performance, instability should be removed in a single go rather than stabilizing each sensor individually. This paper proposes a cooperative video stabilization framework, VSAMS for multisensory aerial data based on robust boosting curves which encapsulate stability of high spatial frequency information as used by flying parakeets (budgerigars). For reducing shake and jitter and preservation of actual camera path, a multistage smoothing approach is visualized. Experiments are performed on multisensory UAV data which contains infrared and electro-optical video streams. Subjective and objective quality evaluation proves effectiveness of the proposed cooperative stabilization framework.

- Description: Reliability and timeliness are two essential requirements of successful detection of critical events in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). The base station (BS) is particularly interested about reliable and timely collection of data sent by the nodes close to the ongoing event, and at that time, the data sent by other nodes have little importance. In this paper, we propose Congestion and Delay Aware Routing (CODAR) protocol that tries to route data in congestion and delay aware manners. If congestion occurs, it also mitigates congestion by utilizing an accurate data-rate adjustment. Each node collects control information from neighbours and works in a distributed manner. CODAR also puts emphasis on successful collection of these control information which eventually provides desirable performance. Experimental results show that CODAR is capable of avoiding and mitigating congestion effectively, and performs better than similar known techniques in terms of reliable and timely event detection.

- Description: Condition based maintenance (CBM) in the process industry helps in determining the residual life of equipment, avoiding sudden breakdown and facilitating the maintenance staff to schedule repairs by optimizing demand–supply relationships. One of the prevalent issues in CBM is to predict the residual life of the equipment. This paper proposes a novel framework to predict the remnant life of the equipment, called residual life prediction, based on optimally parameterized wavelet transform and multi-step support vector regression (RWMS). In optimally parameterized wavelet transform, a generalized criterion is proposed to select the wavelet decomposition level which works for all the applications; decomposition nodes are selected by characterizing their dominancy level based upon relative fault signature–signal energy contents. The prediction model is based on multi-step support vector regression to determine the nonlinear crack propagation in the rotary machine according to Paris’s fatigue model. The results both for the simulated as well as the actual vibration datasets validate the enhanced performance of RWMS in comparison with the existing techniques to predict the residual life of the equipment.

- Description: Safety has always been of vital concern in both industrial and home applications. Ensuring safety often requires certain quantifications regarding the inclusive behavior of the system under observation in order to determine deviations from normal behavior. In machine health monitoring, the vibration signal is of great importance for such measurements because it includes abundant information from several machine parts and surroundings that can influence machine behavior. This paper proposes a unitary anomaly detection technique (UAD) that, upon observation of abnormal behavior in the vibration signal, can trigger an alarm with an adjustable threshold in order to meet different safety requirements. The normalized amplitude of spectral contents of the quasi stationary time vibration signal are divided into frequency bins, and the summed amplitudes frequencies over bin are used as features. From a training set consisting of normal vibration signals, Gaussian distribution models are obtained for each feature, which are then used for anomaly detection.

- Description: The vibrations induced by machine faults help in diagnosis and prognosis of the machine. It is crucial for the fault diagnostic system to extract resonant frequency band which carries useful information about the defect frequencies and contains maximum signal to noise ratio. The spectral orientation of the resonant frequency band varies with the variation in machine dynamics. The existing techniques which employ wavelet transformation to exploit the signal energy distribution among different frequency sub-bands, are based on fixed decomposition level and do not optimize the wavelet parameters according to varying machine dynamics. The proposed study develops a novel technique: Adaptive Wavelet Decomposition and Resonance Frequency Estimation (AWRE) which estimates the positioning of the resonant frequency band based on adaptive selection of the wavelet decomposition levels. The results for the simulated as well as actual vibration data demonstrate that the proposed technique estimates the bandwidth of the resonant frequency band quite effectively.

- Description: The capacity of wireless ad hoc networks can be increased by using multiple radio channels. But due to interference the capacity is still not fully utilized. This is caused by the limited number of available radio channels. The interference problem can be reduced using directional beams instead of omni-directional beams. This paper presents a novel cross-layer approach to use multiple radio channels with directional antennas. We are using three different radio channels. Each node has three fixed directional beams having fixed beamwidth and with different radio frequency. Two nodes can communicate when both the sending and receiving beams are pointing towards each other using the same frequency channel. In this study the directions of beams cannot be changed dynamically. A modified version of Ad hoc On-demand Distance Vector (AODV) routing protocol has been used. Simulation results show that our approach outperforms other methods using three different radio channels with omni-directional antennas

- Description: Multiple-point defects and abraded surfaces in rotary machinery induce complex vibration signatures, and have a tendency to mislead defect diagnosis models. A challenging problem in machine defect diagnosis is to model and study defect signature dynamics in the case of multiple-point defects and surface abrasion. In this study, a multiple-point defect model (MPDM) that characterizes the dynamics of n-point bearing defects is proposed. MPDM is further extended to model degradation in a rotating machine as a special case of multiple-point defects. Analytical and experimental results for multiple-point defects and abrasions show that the location of the fundamental defect frequency shifts depending upon the relative location of the defects and width of the abrasive region. This variation in the defect frequency results in a degradation of the defect detection accuracy of the defect diagnostic model. Based on envelope detection analysis, a modification in existing defect diagnostic models is recommended to nullify the impact of multiple-point defects, and general abrasion in machine components.

- Description: Variation in viewpoints poses significant challenges to action recognition. One popular way of encoding view-invariant action representation is based on the exploitation of epipolar geometry between different views of the same action. Majority of representative work considers detection of landmark points and their tracking by assuming that motion trajectories for all landmark points on human body are available throughout the course of an action. Unfortunately, due to occlusion and noise, detection and tracking of these landmarks is not always robust. To facilitate it, some of the work assumes that such trajectories are manually marked which is a clear drawback and lacks automation introduced by computer vision. In this paper, we address this problem by proposing view invariant action matching score based on epipolar geometry between actor silhouettes, without tracking and explicit point correspondences. In addition, we explore multi-body epipolar constraint which facilitates to work on original action volumes without any pre-processing. We show that multi-body fundamental matrix captures the geometry of dynamic action scenes and helps devising an action matching score across different views without any prior segmentation of actors. Extensive experimentation on challenging view invariant action datasets shows that our approach not only removes long standing assumptions but also achieves significant improvement in recognition accuracy and retrieval.
