- Description: Software-defined networks (SDN) has a holistic view of the network. It is highly suitable for handling dynamic loads in the traditional network with a minimal update in the network infrastructure. However, the standard SDN architecture control plane has been designed for single or multiple distributed SDN controllers facing severe bottleneck issues. Our initial research created a reference model for the traditional network, using the standard SDN (referred to as SDN hereafter) in a network simulator called NetSim. Based on the network traffic, the reference models consisted of light, modest and heavy networks depending on the number of connected IoT devices. Furthermore, a priority scheduling and congestion control algorithm is proposed in the standard SDN, named extended SDN (eSDN), which minimises congestion and performs better than the standard SDN. However, the enhancement was suitable only for the small-scale network because, in a large-scale network, the eSDN does not support dynamic SDN controller mapping. Often, the same SDN controller gets overloaded, leading to a single point of failure. Our literature review shows that most proposed solutions are based on static SDN controller deployment without considering flow fluctuations and traffic bursts that lead to a lack of load balancing among the SDN controllers in real-time, eventually increasing the network latency. Therefore, to maintain the Quality of Service (QoS) in the network, it becomes imperative for the static SDN controller to neutralise the on-the-fly traffic burst. Thus, our novel dynamic controller mapping algorithm with multiple-controller placement in the SDN is critical to solving the identified issues. In dSDN, the SDN controllers are mapped dynamically with the load fluctuation. If any SDN controller reaches its maximum threshold, the rest of the traffic will be diverted to another controller, significantly reducing delay and enhancing the overall performance. Our technique considers the latency and load fluctuation in the network and manages the situations where static mapping is ineffective in dealing with the dynamic flow variation. © 2023 by the authors.

- Description: The increasing attacks on traffic signals worldwide indicate the importance of intrusion detection. The existing traffic signal Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) that rely on inputs from connected vehicles and image analysis techniques can only detect intrusions created by spoofed vehicles. However, these approaches fail to detect intrusion from attacks on in-road sensors, traffic controllers, and signals. In this paper, we proposed an IDS based on detecting anomalies associated with flow rate, phase time, and vehicle speed, which is a significant extension of our previous work using additional traffic parameters and statistical tools. We theoretically modelled our system using the Dempster-Shafer decision theory, considering the instantaneous observations of traffic parameters and their relevant historical normal traffic data. We also used Shannon's entropy to determine the uncertainty associated with the observations. To validate our work, we developed a simulation model based on the traffic simulator called SUMO using many real scenarios and the data recorded by the Victorian Transportation Authority, Australia. The scenarios for abnormal traffic conditions were generated considering attacks such as jamming, Sybil, and false data injection attacks. The results show that the overall detection accuracy of our proposed system is 79.3% with fewer false alarms.

- Description: Biomarker-based cancer identification and classification tools are widely used in bioinformatics and machine learning fields. However, the high dimensionality of microarray gene expression data poses a challenge for identifying important genes in cancer diagnosis. Many feature selection algorithms optimize cancer diagnosis by selecting optimal features. This article proposes an ensemble rank-based feature selection method (EFSM) and an ensemble weighted average voting classifier (VT) to overcome this challenge. The EFSM uses a ranking method that aggregates features from individual selection methods to efficiently discover the most relevant and useful features. The VT combines support vector machine, k-nearest neighbor, and decision tree algorithms to create an ensemble model. The proposed method was tested on three benchmark datasets and compared to existing built-in ensemble models. The results show that our model achieved higher accuracy, with 100% for leukaemia, 94.74% for colon cancer, and 94.34% for the 11-tumor dataset. This study concludes by identifying a subset of the most important cancer-causing genes and demonstrating their significance compared to the original data. The proposed approach surpasses existing strategies in accuracy and stability, significantly impacting the development of ML-based gene analysis. It detects vital genes with higher precision and stability than other existing methods. © 2023 by the authors.

- Description: Mobile edge computing (MEC) deploys servers on the edge of the mobile network to reduce the data transmission delay between servers and mobile devices, and can meet the computing demand of mobile computing tasks. It alleviates the problem of computing power and delay requirements of mobile computing tasks and reduces the energy consumption of mobile devices. However, the MEC server has limited computing and storage resources and mobile network bandwidth, making it impossible to offload all mobile computing tasks to MEC servers for processing. Therefore, MEC needs to reasonably offload and schedule mobile computing tasks, to achieve efficient utilization of server resources. To solve the above-mentioned problems, in this article, the task offloading problem is formulated as an optimization problem, and particle swarm optimization (PSO) and quantum PSO based task offloading strategies are proposed. Extensive simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can significantly reduce the system energy consumption, task completion time, and running time compared with recent advanced strategies, namely ant colony optimization, multiagent deep deterministic policy gradients, deep meta reinforcement learning-based offloading, iterative proximal algorithm, and parallel random forest. © 2005-2012 IEEE.

- Description: Internet security has become a major concern with the growing use of the Internet of Things (IoT) and edge computing technologies. Even though data processing is handled by the edge server, sensitive data is generated and stored by the IoT devices, which are subject to attack. Since most IoT devices have limited resources, standard security algorithms such as AES, DES, and RSA hamper their ability to run properly. In this paper, a lightweight symmetric key cipher termed randomized butterfly architecture of fast Fourier transform for key (RBFK) cipher is proposed for resource-constrained IoT devices in the edge computing environment. The butterfly architecture is used in the key scheduling system to produce strong round keys for five rounds of the encryption method. The RBFK cipher has two key sizes: 64 and 128 bits, with a block size of 64 bits. The RBFK ciphers have a larger avalanche effect due to the butterfly architecture ensuring strong security. The proposed cipher satisfies the Shannon characteristics of confusion and diffusion. The memory usage and execution cycle of the RBFK cipher are assessed using the fair evaluation of the lightweight cryptographic systems (FELICS) tool. The proposed ciphers were also implemented using MATLAB 2021a to test key sensitivity by analyzing the histogram, correlation graph, and entropy of encrypted and decrypted images. Since the RBFK ciphers with minimal computational complexity provide better security than recently proposed competing ciphers, these are suitable for IoT devices in an edge computing environment. © 2023, The Author(s).

- Description: The Coastal Patrol and Surveillance Application (CPSA) is developed and deployed to detect, track and monitor water vessel traffic using automated devices. The latest advancements of marine technologies, including Automatic Underwater Vehicles, have encouraged the development of this type of applications. To facilitate their operations, installation of a Coastal Patrol and Surveillance Network (CPSN) is mandatory. One of the primary design objectives of this network is to deliver an adequate amount of data within an effective time frame. This is particularly essential for the detection of an intruder's vessel and its notification through the adverse underwater communication channels. Additionally, intermittent connectivity of the nodes remains another important obstacle to overcome to allow the smooth functioning of CPSA. Taking these objectives and obstacles into account, this work proposes a new protocol by ensembling forward error correction technique (namely Reed-Solomon codes or RS) in Underwater Delay Tolerant Network with probabilistic spraying technique (UDTN-Prob) routing protocol, named Underwater Delay Tolerant Protocol with RS (UDTN-RS). In addition, the existing binary packet spraying technique in UDTN-Prob is enhanced for supporting encoded packet exchange between the contacting nodes. A comprehensive simulation has been performed employing DEsign, Simulate, Emulate and Realize Test-beds (DESERT) underwater simulator along with World Ocean Simulation System (WOSS) package to receive a more realistic account of acoustic propagation for identifying the effectiveness of the proposed protocol. Three scenarios are considered during the simulation campaign, namely varying data transmission rate, varying area size, and a scenario focusing on estimating the overhead ratio. Conversely, for the first two scenarios, three metrics are taken into account: normalised packet delivery ratio, delay, and normalised throughput. The acquired results for these scenarios and metrics are compared to its ancestor, i.e., UDTN-Prob. The results suggest that the proposed UDTN-RS protocol can be considered as a suitable alternative to the existing protocols like UDTN-Prob, Epidemic, and others for sparse networks like CPSN. © 2013 IEEE.

- Description: Several studies have used machine learning algorithms to develop intrusion systems (IDS), which differentiate anomalous behaviours from the normal activities of network systems. Due to the ease of automated data collection and subsequently an increased size of collected data on network traffic and activities, the complexity of intrusion analysis is increasing exponentially. A particular issue, due to statistical and computation limitations, a single classifier may not perform well for large scale data as existent in modern IDS contexts. Ensemble methods have been explored in literature in such big data contexts. Although more complicated and requiring additional computation, literature has a note that ensemble methods can result in better accuracy than single classifiers in different large scale data classification contexts, and it is interesting to explore how ensemble approaches can perform in IDS. In this research, we introduce a tree-based stacking ensemble technique (SET) and test the effectiveness of the proposed model on two intrusion datasets (NSL-KDD and UNSW-NB15). We further enhance incorporate feature selection techniques to select the best relevant features with the proposed SET. A comprehensive performance analysis shows that our proposed model can better identify the normal and anomaly traffic in network than other existing IDS models. This implies the potentials of our proposed system for cybersecurity in Internet of Things (IoT) and large scale networks. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.

- Description: Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) based on deep learning models can identify and mitigate cyberattacks in IoT applications in a resilient and systematic manner. These models, which support the IDS's decision, could be vulnerable to a cyberattack known as adversarial attack. In this type of attack, attackers create adversarial samples by introducing small perturbations to attack samples to trick a trained model into misclassifying them as benign applications. These attacks can cause substantial damage to IoT-based smart city models in terms of device malfunction, data leakage, operational outage and financial loss. To our knowledge, the impact of and defence against adversarial attacks on IDS models in relation to smart city applications have not been investigated yet. To address this research gap, in this work, we explore the effect of adversarial attacks on the deep learning and shallow machine learning models by using a recent IoT dataset and propose a method using adversarial retraining that can significantly improve IDS performance when confronting adversarial attacks. Simulation results demonstrate that the presence of adversarial samples deteriorates the detection accuracy significantly by above 70% while our proposed model can deliver detection accuracy above 99% against all types of attacks including adversarial attacks. This makes an IDS robust in protecting IoT-based smart city services. © 2022 Elsevier Ltd

- Description: The smart grid accessibility over the Internet of Things (IoT) is becoming attractive to electrical grid operators as it brings considerable operational and cost efficiencies. However, this in return creates significant cyber security challenges, such as fortification of state estimation data such as state variables against false data injection attacks (FDIAs). In this paper, a clustered partitioning state estimation (CPSE) technique is proposed to detect FDIA by using static state estimation, namely, weighted least square (WLS) method in conjunction with dynamic state estimation using minimum variance unscented Kalman filter (MV-UKF) which improves the accuracy of state estimation. The estimates acquired from the MV-UKF do not deviate like WLS as these are purely based on the previous iteration saved in the transition matrix. The deviation between the corresponding estimations of WLS and MV-UKF are utilised to partition the smart grid into smaller sub-systems to detect FDIA and then identify its location. To validate the proposed detection technique, FIDAs are injected into IEEE 14-bus, IEEE 30-bus, IEEE 118-bus, and IEEE 300-bus distribution feeder using MATPOWER simulation platform. Our results clearly demonstrate that the proposed technique can locate the attack area efficiently compared to other techniques such as chi square. © 2013 IEEE.

For this reason, the early detection of vulnerabilities and threat strategies are vital for minimising the risks for enterprise networks configured with a variety of node types, which are called hybrid networks. Existing vulnerability assessment techniques are unable to exhaustively analyse all vulnerabilities in modern dynamic IT networks, which utilise a wide range of IoT and industrial control devices (ICS). This could lead to having a less optimal risk evaluation. - Description: Emails are the most popular and efficient communication method that makes them vulnerable to misuse. Federated learning (FL) provides a decentralized machine learning (ML) model, where a central server coordinates clients that collaboratively train a shared ML model. This paper proposes Federated Phishing Filtering (FPF) technique based on federated learning, natural language processing, and deep learning. FL for intelligent algorithms fuses trained models of ML algorithms from multiple sites for collective learning. This approach improves ML performance by utilizing large collective training data sets across the corporate client base, resulting in higher phishing email detection accuracy. FPF techniques preserve email privacy using local feature extraction on client email servers. Thus, the contents of emails do not need to be transmitted across the network or stored on third-party servers. We have applied FL and Natural Language Processing (NLP) for email phishing detection. This technique provides four training modes that perform FL without sharing email content. Our research categorizes emails as benign, spam, and phishing. There is a pressing need to evaluate and model these vulnerabilities in the network to avoid cascading failures in power systems. In this paper, we propose and evaluate a vulnerability assessment framework based on attack probability for the protection and security of a smart grid. Several factors were taken into consideration such as the probability of attack, propagation of attack from a parent node to child nodes, effectiveness of basic metering system, Kalman estimation and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI). The IEEE-300 bus smart grid was simulated using MATPOWER to study the effectiveness of the proposed framework by injecting false data injection attacks (FDIA); and studying their propagation.
