Adoption of blockchain technology : exploring the factors affecting organizational decision

  • Description: Blockchain (BCT) is an emerging technology that promises many benefits for organizations, for instance, disintermediation, data security, data transparency, a single version of the truth, and trust among trading partners. Despite its multiple benefits, the adoption rate of BCT among organizations has not reached a significantly high level worldwide, thus requiring further research in this space. The present study addresses this issue in the Australian context. There is a knowledge gap in what specific factors, among the plethora of factors reported in the extant literature, affect the organizational adoption of BCT in Australia. To fill this gap, the study uses the qualitative interpretative research approach along with the technology-organization-environment (TOE) framework as a theoretical lens. The data was mainly drawn from the literature review and semi-structured interviews of the decision-makers and senior IT people from the BCT adopter and potential adopter organizations in Australia. According to the findings, perceived information transparency, perceived risks, organization innovativeness, organization learning capability, standards uncertainty, and competition intensity influence organizational adoption of BCT in Australia. These factors are exclusively identified in this study. The study also validates the influence of perceived benefits and perceived compatibility on BCT adoption that are reported in the past studies. Practically, these findings are helpful for the Australian government and public and private organizations to develop better policies and make informed decisions for the organizational adoption of BCT. The findings would guide decision-makers to think about the adoption of BCT strategically. The study also has theoretical implications explained in the discussion section. © 2022 Saleem Malik et al.

  • Description: Ever-growing and rapidly changing healthcare information systems (HIS) encourage many new technologies to integrate with it to enrich the treatment and facilitate patients. Blockchain, a decentralised digital ledger, is legitimately disrupting traditional HIS due to its characteristics such as immutability, interoperability, decentralise, and security. Blockchain' applications in healthcare industries are attracting investors and organisations to develop platforms for future. However, security and privacy concerns hinder blockchain adoption in the health sector. Therefore, there is a need to develop deeper understandings about these issues and require strategies to address these issues so that the desired values can be obtained. Besides, privacy could mean different to different people such as patients, doctors, and admin staff. Therefore, there is a need to explore it from various stakeholder perspectives too. Using interpretive qualitative research approach, this research-in-progress will extend the body of knowledge by scrutinising the stakeholders' perception of privacy concerns and its relationship in blockchain based HIS. The findings of this study will contribute to address privacy issues emerged from the research and help to eliminate them before implementing blockchain. This paper supplies an appropriate research approach for multidimensional research in healthcare. In addition, this research-in progress will formulate a framework which provide awareness to stakeholders about privacy issues when they use blockchain based HIS in future. © 2022 ACM.

  • Description: Drawing on information gathered from scoping interviews with graduate recruiters and industry experts in Australia, this study extends our understanding of how employers, rather than researchers, describe the desired work-ready skills for graduate/entry level roles in the Australian information and communication technology (ICT) industry. Contrary to the developing literature on work-readiness, the findings showed that the skills which contribute to work-readiness should not be limited to field-specific knowledge, skills and cognitive skills, but that they should be extended to include affective skills or personal attributes and behaviors, such as selfefficacy, willingness to learn, disposition, tolerance and integrity. Results have practical implications for developing academic programs aimed at enhancing cognitive and affective skills among IT graduates for employment potential and successful transition into work.

  • Description: Blockchain Technology (BCT) is a novel innovation that has the potential to transform industries, for instance, supply chain, energy, finance, and healthcare. However, despite the potential and the wide range of benefits reported, organizational adoption of BCT is low in several countries including Australia. Some studies investigated the adoption of BCT in different countries, however, there is a lack of research that examines the organizational adoption of BCT in Australia. This study fills this gap by exploring the factors, which influence BCT adoption among Australian organizations. To achieve this, we used an interpretative qualitative research approach based on the Technology, Organization, and Environment (TOE) framework and the Institutional Theory. The findings show that organizational adoption of BCT in Australia is influenced by perceived novelty, complexity, cost, and disintermediation feature of BCT; top management knowledge and support; government support, customer pressure, trading partner readiness, and consensus among trading partners. © 2021 IEEE Computer Society.   • Description: Blockchain technology (BCT) has been gaining popularity due to its benefits for almost every industry. However, despite its benefits, the organizational adoption of BCT is rather limited. This lack of uptake motivated us to identify the factors that influence the adoption of BCT from an organizational perspective. In doing this, we reviewed the BCT literature, interviewed BCT experts, and proposed a research model based on the TOE framework. Specifically, we theorized the role of technological (perceived benefits, compatibility, information transparency, and disintermediation), organizational (organization innovativeness, organizational learning capability, and top management support), and environmental (competition intensity, government support, trading partners readiness, and standards uncertainty) factors in the organizational adoption of BCT in Australia. We confirmed the model with a sample of adopters and potential adopter organizations in Aus-tralia. The results show a significant role of the proposed factors in the organizational adoption of BCT in Australia. Additionally, we found that the relationship between the influential factors and BCT adoption is moderated by “perceived risks”. The study extends the TOE framework by adding factors that were ignored in previous studies on BCT adoption, such as perceived information trans-parency, perceived disintermediation, organizational innovativeness, organizational learning capa-bility, and standards uncertainty. © 2021 by the authors.   • Description: Being a significant stakeholder in the graduates' employment outcomes, it is vital to understand employers' perceptions of graduates' work-readiness. However, existing information systems (IS) literature focuses mainly on the perceptions of students or universities. This paper aims to fill this gap by analysing scoping interviews conducted with graduate recruiters and industry experts in Australia regarding attributes that can improve graduates' employment prospects in the information and communication technology industry. A preliminary investigation based on grounded theory identified three emergent themes from the data: behaviors, skills, and knowledge levels. Based on the findings, this study proposes an IS graduate work-readiness framework that can help universities to develop academic programs aimed at enhancing desirable skills and attitudes among IS graduates' employment.

  • Description: Scholarly and commercial literature indicates several applications of Blockchain Technology (BCT) in different industries e.g. health, finance, supply chain, government, and energy. Despite abundant benefits reported and growing prominence, BCT has been facing various challenges across the globe, including low adoption by organizations. There is a dearth of studies that examined the organizational adoption of blockchain technology, particularly in Australia. This lack of uptake provides the rationale to initiate this research to identify the factors influencing the Australian organizations to adopt BCT. To achieve this, we conducted a qualitative study based on the Technology, Organization, Environment (TOE) framework. The study proposes a theoretical model grounded on the findings of semi-structured interviews of blockchain experts in Australia. The proposed model shows that the organizational adoption of blockchain is influenced by perceived benefits, compatibility, and complexity, organization innovativeness, organizational learning capability, competitive intensity, government support, trading partner readiness, and standards uncertainty. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

  • Description: Despite latest advances in small group research, discovery of group interactions and performance from analysis of small group communication, such as project emails, is still minimally represented. This paper presents a novel approach of studying small groups through analysis of the participants' emails sent to the project manager. We examined 1,105 email messages from managers' email in-boxes across five distinct ICT projects from the personal, social, collaborative, and engaging perspective of the email senders and link the findings to group performance. The study provides theoretical evidence that analysis of incoming communication from project managers' email in-box can be used to measure a group's success.   • Description: Deep and rapid changes in digital enterprise technology exceed the ability of traditional teaching methods to prepare students for challenges encountered in modern enterprises. Researchers proposed different pedagogical approaches to teach ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) concepts such as ERPsim games to enhance students’ learning and job-readiness. Although the ERPsim studies verified the role of these games in enhancing students’ learning, whether these games contribute to student’s job readiness still needs to be explored. Using the mixed-method approach, this research-in-progress is designed to fill this gap by investigating the role of ERPsim game in increasing skills, learning levels, and job-readiness among university students in Australia. The findings from this study can contribute to the improvement of ERP pedagogical techniques. In addition, this research-in-progress will provide a concrete mapping to align learning outcomes/skills with ICT industry competencies standards as defined in SFIA (Skills framework for Information Age) and AQF (Australian Qualifications Framework).

  • Description: Blockchain technology promises to significantly impact current business processes in industries from various sectors and reduce transactional cost. Firms, suppliers, government, financial institutions etc. are anticipating a business model transformation through blockchain by accomplishing a decentralized architecture of interorganizational dealings without intermediaries. In spite of its immense potential, however, there are key challenges of blockchain implementation which need to be studied for identifying the opportunities arising and for its successful implementations in future. In this paper, we aim to identify these challenges for blockchain adoption and classify them for clearer understanding. To pursue this effectively, this paper follows a hybrid model of systematic literature review. This paper also explicitly enumerates future research opportunities to lead industry and researchers in correct directions

  • Description: Project managers' email in-boxes often contain hundreds of emails. Analysis of this incoming communication is most likely to provide potentially useful information about team members, their activities and their experiences while performing these activities. However, a project manager who wants to analyze indicators for the state of the project based on stored emails, faces the challenge of how to link semi-structured information on common concepts. Through measurable characteristics of inter-personal communication covering both factual (technical) and personal (human) factors extracted from observations and analysis of "communication" and "communication content", this paper presents a novel approach to application of "communication metrics". To increase project managers' competencies in decoding communication records from their email in-box we focus on "communication metrics" which enables identification of features that might negatively affect progress of the project, the project manager and team members. This in turn provides significant insights into indicators for the state of project health. © PACIS 2018.

  • Description: The objective of this paper is to provide a systematic review of the evolutionary trends in the research domain of information technology and organizational learning. Having surveyed various journals and key conferences between 2000 and 2018 on the topic, we observe that information technology (IT) has expanded from its general form to various contemporary information systems, e.g. knowledge organization systems, communication and collaborative systems and decision support systems. However, organization learning (OL) now essentially occurs through knowledge management activities, e.g. knowledge acquisition, storing, sharing and application of knowledge. The survey reported here not only validates the interplay of IT and OL but also reveals some important intervening factors between IT and OL, e.g. absorptive capacity, organization culture, user trust, acceptance and satisfaction that work as deterministic elements in the reciprocal relationship of IT and OL. We propose future research to explore interaction between big data analytical systems and organizational learning.

  • Description: Customer Relationship Management (CRM) generally has a reputation as a technology that does not live up to its over-inflated expectations. Yet, implementations in higher education remain on the rise. Higher Education institutions (HEIs) are embracing cloud-based CRM systems to upsurge performance, encourage better management practices, and enhance their relationship with staff and students. CRM success however relies heavily on an adaptive organisational learning (OL) process upon which proactive decisions can be made. This paper emphasises that committed learning in post-implementation use is paramount to attaining further understanding of the capabilities, features and functionality of the CRM. Investigating how SaaS CRM usage reflect an organisation’s learning in a Higher Education context, the paper presents theoretical and practical contributions in a framework for effective SaaS CRM utilisation, and recommends a continuous cycle of exploration-exploitation-exploration. Yet the reality is that organisations explore, exploit, and then stop exploring.

  • Description: Health 2.0 is becoming increasingly ubiquitous. The features and functionalities of social media make it suitable for health-related communication. Many healthcare organizations use social media however, the value that they derive from it is unclear. At the moment, there is no consensus on how best the value derived from Health 2.0 can be measured. In order to address this problem, this study explores how Australian healthcare organizations derive value from Health 2.0, and how the derived value can be measured. It is expected that this study will make significant contributions to both theory and practice. The study will put forward a Health 2.0 value-evaluation framework, based on both the research findings, and IS literature. The outcome of this study would help healthcare organizations to understand how value is derived from Health 2.0 and how to measure it. The result of this study will also provide digital health leaders with relevant information that would enable them to make better investment decisions. Overall, the findings of this study will help healthcare organizations to design social media strategies that can yield tangible value. © PACIS 2017.

  • Description: The key challenge for an organisation implementing and using an ERP system is to understand and enact new business processes inscribed in ERP; and thus, undergo a profound organisational change. As continuation of a previous study, this paper provides a summary of the results of the previous study as a background, followed by details of a proposed research methodology for a longitudinal case study. Results from the previous study have shown frustration and struggle of the staff and management of the case study organisation about the implementation of the SAP on the go-live day. The focus of the current study is to provide detailed description of a proposed research methodology that facilitates further understanding of the ERP post-implementation phase using the organisational learning, enactment and the Community of Practice as the theoretical lens for a future empirical research. © ACIS 2017.
