  • Description: In this chapter, we synthesise the interwoven narrative presented in this edited collection that interrogates discourses and policies of inclusive education, foregrounds the lived realities of diverse cohorts, and offers new ways of thinking and acting through a process of capacity building. Through thematic analysis, we analyse emergent themes pertaining to diversity and inclusion to illuminate the divergence between rhetoric and practice where the provision of quality education is concerned. Ultimately, we question whether the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 of quality education for all is being actualised in the twenty-first century and offer provocations on the possibilities of actualising a sustainable, responsive, inclusive, and diverse education future globally.

  • Description: Thermochemical ablation (TCA) is a thermal ablation therapy that utilises heat released from acid-base neutralisation reaction to destroy tumours. This procedure is a promising low-cost solution to existing thermal ablation treatments such as radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and microwave ablation (MWA). Studies have demonstrated that TCA can produce thermal damage that is on par with RFA and MWA when employed properly. Nevertheless, TCA remains a concept that is tested only in a few animal trials due to the risks involved as the result of uncontrolled infusion and incomplete acid-base reaction. In this study, a computational framework that simulates the thermochemical process of TCA is developed.   • Description: The massive increase in population density in cities has led to several urban problems, such as an increment of air pollution, traffic congestion, and a faster spread of infectious diseases. With the rapid innovation in the intelligent sensors technology, and its integration into smart vehicles and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), a novel sensing paradigm has been promoted, namely vehicular crowdsensing, which leverages on-board sensors to capture information from the surrounding environment. Collected data are then analyzed to take proper countermeasures. In this paper, we present a smart coordination mechanism between UAVs and ground vehicles (GVs), which sense information like body temperature and breathing rate of people, in order to support a variety of monitoring applications, including discovering the presence of infectious diseases. In our framework, namely GUAVA, aerial and ground vehicles are equipped with GPS devices and thermal cameras to monitor specific geographic areas, detect humans’ vital parameters and, at the same time, discover duplicate data by identifying matching faces in thermal video sequences with the GaussianFace algorithm. The sensing tasks in hard-to-reach places are assigned to UAVs, with the ability to power up wirelessly from the nearest GV and offload the collected monitoring images to it. Simulation results have assessed our proposed framework, showing good performance in terms of distinct Quality of Service (QoS) metrics. © 2021

  • Description: Anatomy and Physiology (A&P) courses in undergraduate nursing programs are often considered challenging for students. Typically, a wide variety of teaching strategies, including dissection, experiments, illustrations and photographs are used to engage students. This study aimed to explore and describe the learning experiences of an open creative assessment task on undergraduate nursing students of learning A&P. A total of eight students participated in semi-structured interviews. Two major themes emerged from the data, this included 'Bringing A&P to life' which included two sub-themes of 'Learning through peer teaching' and 'An easy way to learn', with the second major theme, 'Custom made learning' which included four sub-themes, 'To grade or not to grade', 'Catering for different learning styles', 'Logistics of group work', and 'Effect of group dynamics'.   • Description: Objectives: The pathophysiology of chronic wounds typically involves redox imbalance and inflammation pathway dysregulation, often with concomitant microbial infection. Endogenous antioxidants such as glutathione and tocopherols are notably reduced or absent, indicative of significant oxidative imbalance. However, emerging evidence suggests that polyphenols could be effective agents for the amelioration of this condition. This review aims to summarise the current state of knowledge surrounding redox imbalance in the chronic wound environment and the potential use of polyphenols for the treatment of chronic wounds. Key findings: Polyphenols provide a multi-faceted approach towards the treatment of chronic wounds. Firstly, their antioxidant activity allows direct neutralisation of harmful free radicals and reactive oxygen species, assisting in restoring redox balance. Upregulation of pro-healing and anti-inflammatory gene pathways and enzymes by specific polyphenols further acts to reduce redox imbalance and promote wound healing actions, such as proliferation, extracellular matrix deposition and tissue remodelling. Finally, many polyphenols possess antimicrobial activity, which can be beneficial for preventing or resolving infection of the wound site. Summary: Exploration of this diverse group of natural compounds may yield effective and economical options for the prevention or treatment of chronic wounds. © 2021 The Author(s).

  • Description: This article tells how the two British economists Hugh Dalton and Colin Clark, came to regard Queensland in the 1930s as an enviable model of economic development. Both men were Fabian socialists and impressed by Queensland's authoritarian premier and by its array of economic controls. Clark even surrendered a promising career at Cambridge to become an economic advisor there. In turn, Queensland, and a personal spiritual crisis, would propel Clark to discard Fabianism for Distributivism.   • Description: Emerging scientific knowledge such as the role of epigenetics and neuroplasticity—the brain's capability to constantly rewire with every action, experience, and thought—is fundamentally changing our understanding of the potential impact we can have on our brain. Our brain is formed by our habits in interaction with our body, the environment, influenced by our lifestyle, successes, failures, and traumas. Neuroplasticity proves that every student's brain is a work in progress, and it is never too late to take better care of one's cognitive fitness. This review presents a repertoire of good habits (GHs). Combined, we suggest that these GHs provide conditions for optimal brain health, by acting as a “Mental Vaccine” which enhances the brain's resilience to brain health-degrading challenges. We argue that schools have a crucial role to play in empowering students to increase their own stress resilience, well-being, and learning by developing their own GHs profile. © 2021 The Authors.   • Description: Organisations need to take steps to protect the privacy and security of the personal information they hold. However, when data is breached, how do individuals know whether the organisation took reasonable steps to protect their data? When breached organisations notify affected individuals, this communication is likely to be one of the few windows into the incident from the outside and can become an important artefact for research. This desktop study aimed to consider the extent to which publicly available Australian data breach communications reflect data privacy and security best practices. This paper presents a brief review of literature and government guidance on data security and privacy best practices, along with the results of a qualitative content analysis of 33 publicly available Australian data breach communications. This analysis illustrated that there was little reflection of data privacy and security practices. Literature, government guidance and the content analysis were used to inform and develop a new voluntary framework for organisations. This consists of a series of evaluation questions divided into two broad categories: responsible data management and responsible portrayal of the breach. The framework has the potential to help organisations plan the inclusion of data privacy and security management aspects in their data breach communications. This could assist organisations to address their legal and ethical responsibility to account for their actions in managing privacy and security of the personal data they hold. © 2022

  • Description: Crafting has occupied the hands and minds of women over many centuries providing vital connections with cultural skills and with community. While the COVID-19 pandemic has isolated women in their homes, it has also provided opportunities for women to reconnect to crafting through virtual spaces. This paper draws on a thematic analysis of a focus group interview examining the experiences of regional women participating in a crafting group and identifies the ways in which they used craft to support their wellbeing. Drawing on the concept of therapeutic landscapes, the paper highlights that connection in a virtual craft group supports lifelong learning and wellbeing, brings women together in support through a community of women’s practice and facilitates opportunities for producing meaningful and commemorative quilting projects This finding has implications for a society experiencing unprecedented levels of stress, mental illness and anxiety about the future. © 2022, Adult Learning Australia.   • Description: Cabomba caroliniana [A. Gray] (Cabombaceae), also known as Carolina fanwort, is a native of South America which has now become a serious invasive threat to aquatic systems across the world. Its capacity to inundate a water column with active fragments and seeds makes the containment and management of C. caroliniana a challenging task and an ecological and economic necessity. Previous and current management efforts have been largely focussed on biological control, drawdown methods, herbicide application, manual removal, shading and the use of a concentrated urea solution. Although these methods have shown some success in reducing large infestations, they are generally considered to be unreliable when used alone since they are unable to contain or reduce the species in the long term with a single-use treatment protocol. It is feared that, without effective, improved and integrated management strategies, C. caroliniana will continue to invade aquatic ecosystems beyond its already wide current distribution, thus causing increased global economic and environmental damage. This review will therefore explore the biology and distribution of C. caroliniana and examine the current and previous attempts for its global management. It will also evaluate the most successful current treatments and clarify where research efforts are urgently needed for the improved long-term extirpation of this aquatic invader. © 2021 European Weed Research Society

  • Description: Power control and optimization are both crucial for the proper operation of a microgrid. However, in existing research, they are usually studied separately. Active and reactive powers are either maintained to constant values at device level or optimized at system level without considering frequency and voltage control of distributed converters. In this article, a holistic power control and optimization strategy is proposed for microgrids. Specifically, a model predictive control incorporated with the droop method is developed at device level to achieve load sharing and flexible power dispatching among distributed energy resources, which is feasible for both islanded and grid-connected modes. In addition, an evolutionary particle swarm optimization algorithm is designed at system level to generate the optimal active and reactive power setpoints, which are then sent to the device level for controlling inverters. The proposed power optimization scheme is able to mitigate voltage deviations and minimize the operational cost of the microgrid. Comprehensive case studies and real-time simulator test are provided to demonstrate the feasibility and efficacy of the proposed power control and optimization strategy. © 2005-2012 IEEE.

  • Description: Backbreak is a rock fracture problem that exceeds the limits of the last row of holes in an explosion operation. Excessive backbreak increases operational costs and also poses a threat to mine safety. In this regard, a new hybrid intelligence approach based on random forest (RF) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) is proposed for predicting backbreak with high accuracy to reduce the unsolicited phenomenon induced by backbreak in open-pit blasting. A data set of 234 samples with six input parameters including special drilling (SD), spacing (S), burden (B), hole length (L), stemming (T) and powder factor (PF) and one output parameter backbreak (BB) is set up in this study. Seven input combinations (one with six parameters, six with five parameters) are built to generate the optimal prediction model. The PSO algorithm is integrated with the RF algorithm to find the optimal hyper-parameters of each model and the fitness function, which is the mean absolute error (MAE) of ten cross-validations. The performance capacities of the optimal models are assessed using MAE, root-mean-square error (RMSE), Pearson correlation coefficient (R2) and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE). Findings demonstrated that the PSO–RF model combining L–S–B–T–PF with MAE of 0.0132 and 0.0568, RMSE of 0.0811 and 0.1686, R2 of 0.9990 and 0.9961 and MAPE of 0.0027 and 0.0116 in training and testing phases, respectively, has optimal prediction performance. The optimal PSO–RF models were compared with the classical artificial neural network, RF, genetic programming, support vector machine and convolutional neural network models and show that the PSO–RF model has superiority in predicting backbreak. The Gini index of each input variable has also been calculated in the RF model, which was 31.2 (L), 23.1 (S), 27.4 (B), 36.6 (T), 23.4 (PF) and 16.9 (SD), respectively. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature.

  • Description: Traditional wireless power transfer (WPT) systems usually adopt the triple-phase-shift control method to maintain a constant output voltage, track the maximum system efficiency point (MEPT), and achieve zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) operation for various applications. However, these three targets are achieved at the cost of high reactive power on both primary and secondary sides, especially under light-load conditions, leading to low efficiency. This has become one of the challenges that hinder a further deployment of WPT technologies in practice. To address this vital problem, in this article, how the reactive power lowers the system efficiency is revealed based on a mathematical model established. Then, a hybrid modulation control strategy based on a proper selection between the full-bridge and half-bridge modes of the inverter and active rectifier is developed. An experimental prototype is constructed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control method. Experimental results show that the proposed method can reduce the reactive power, maintain a constant output voltage, and realize the MEPT and ZVS operation, with high efficiencies up to 94.29% in a wide load range. © 1982-2012 IEEE.

  • Description: The concept of an intelligent pandemic response network is gaining momentum during the current novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) era. A heterogeneous communication architecture is essential to facilitate collaborative and intelligent medical analytics in the fifth generation and beyond (B5G) networks to intelligently learn and disseminate pandemic-related information and diagnostic results. However, such a technique raises privacy issues pertaining to the health data of the patients. In this paper, we envision a privacy-preserving pandemic response network using a proof-of-concept, aerial–terrestrial network system serving mobile user entities/equipment (UEs). By leveraging the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), a lightweight federated learning model is proposed to collaboratively yet privately learn medical (e.g., COVID-19) symptoms with high accuracy using the data collected by individual UEs using ambient sensors and wearable devices. An asynchronous weight updating technique is introduced in federated learning to avoid redundant learning and save precious networking as well as computing resources of the UAVs/UEs. A use-case where an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based model is employed for COVID-19 detection from radiograph images is presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.

  • Description: The ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic continue to emerge across all facets of the world of work, including the field of human resource management (HRM). Sustainable HRM, drawing on the triple bottom line elements of the economic, environmental and social pillars of sustainability, provides an ideal basis from which to understand the intersection of the COVID-19 pandemic and HRM. In this systematic literature review, we analyze peer reviewed articles published in the nexus of the pandemic and sustainable HRM, identifying the dimensions and extent of research in this topical area of study. Our CEDEL model—complicator–exposer–disruptor–enabler– legitimizer—conceptualizes our understanding of the role of COVID-19 in sustainable HRM. This paper provides a framework from which future studies can benefit when investigating the impacts of COVID-19, and a comprehensive identification of future research avenues. © 2022 by the authors.   • Description: Purpose: This study compared the impact, challenges, and benefits of the Circle of Security-Parenting (COS-P) intervention across two delivery modes: group center-based (GCCOS-P) and individual home-based (IHCOS-P). Methods: This mixed-methods study compared the impact of the COS-P on parental reflective functioning and parental stress across two delivery modes: GCCOS-P (n = 7) and IHCOS-P (n = 7). It compared the challenges and benefits of each, from the qualitative perspectives of participants (n = 2 IHCOS-P; n = 3 GCCOS-P) and facilitators (n = 4). Results: Quantitative statistical analysis comparing pre- and postintervention measures suggest that each delivery mode was equally effective in reducing parental stress and generally noneffective with respect to parental reflective functioning. Challenges and benefits of each mode, inherent in the peer/shared learning environment of the GCOS-P and the individualized, flexible delivery of the IHCOS-P, were identified. Discussion: This study adds to knowledge about the widely utilized COS-P, highlighting challenges and benefits of two modes of delivery. © The Author(s) 2021.

A new dimensionality-unbiased score for efficient and effective outlying aspect mining

  • Description: The main aim of the outlying aspect mining algorithm is to automatically detect the subspace(s) (a.k.a. aspect(s)), where a given data point is dramatically different than the rest of the data in each of those subspace(s) (aspect(s)). To rank the subspaces for a given data point, a scoring measure is required to compute the outlying degree of the given data in each subspace. In this paper, we introduce a new measure to compute outlying degree, called Simple Isolation score using Nearest Neighbor Ensemble (SiNNE), which not only detects the outliers but also provides an explanation on why the selected point is an outlier. SiNNE is a dimensionally unbias measure in its raw form, which means the scores produced by SiNNE are compared directly with subspaces having different dimensions. Thus, it does not require any normalization to make the score unbiased. Our experimental results on synthetic and publicly available real-world datasets revealed that (i) SiNNE produces better or at least the same results as existing scores. (ii) It improves the run time of the existing outlying aspect mining algorithm based on beam search by at least two orders of magnitude. SiNNE allows the existing outlying aspect mining algorithm to run in datasets with hundreds of thousands of instances and thousands of dimensions which was not possible before. © 2022, The Author(s).

  • Description: This multilevel inverter type summarizes an output voltage of medium voltage based on a series connection of power cells employing standard configurations of low-voltage components. The main problems of cascaded switched-capacitor multilevel inverters (CSCMLIs) are the harmful reverse flowing current of inductive loads, the large number of switches, and the surge current of the capacitors. As the number of switches increases, the reliability of the inverter decreases. To address these issues, a new CSCMLI is proposed using two modules containing asymmetric DC sources to generate 13 levels. The main novelty of the proposed configuration is the reduction of the number of switches while increasing the maximum output voltage. Despite the many similarities, the presented topology differs from similar topologies. Compared to similar structures, the direction of some switches is reversed, leading to a change in the direction of current flow. By incorporating the lowest number of semiconductors, it was demonstrated that the proposed inverter has the lowest cost function among similar inverters. The role of switched-capacitor inrush current in the selection of switch, diode, and DC source for inverter operation in medium and high voltage applications is presented. The inverter performance to supply the inductive loads is clarified. Comparison of the simulation and experimental results validates the effectiveness of the proposed inverter topology, showing promising potentials in photovoltaic, buildings, and domestic applications.
