- Description: The Assumed Divide is a visual arts based, practice-led research project which explores expectations of gender within the context of interpersonal relationships, structured through feminist theory. I created a collection of small, figurative sculptures inspired by experiences of animosity and misunderstanding, to locate areas of gendered interpersonal ambivalence. This thesis proposes that feminism might enhance gender relations by deconstructing harmful stereotypes and by encouraging empathy and respect for diversity. Issues such as reproductive choice, intergenerational debate, and uncertainty in aims are discussed as apparent impediments to the unity of feminism, against a patriarchal tradition that grants men categorical universality. I argue that by dismantling the perception of male unification and by elucidating the multitudinous similarities and variances of human experience, feminism makes advances in eliminating sexism. I also examine how binary gender division, with an assumption of distinct difference between male and female, generates conflict and power dynamics advantageous to men, diminishing the quality of heterosexual and social relationships. The observation that overlapping gender traits blur boundaries of male and female, and that rigid categorisations are not indisputably representative of all people, may offer more points of connection to bridge the divide of gender. Each artwork in The Assumed Divide reflects on gendered experience, with sculpted depictions of disintegrated flesh acting as visual manifestations of the psyches and social conditions of the figures. Working realistically on a small scale, and integrating found silver trays as motifs of domesticity and relationships, my intent is to directly stimulate contemplation of the themes in context to viewers’ lives, recognising that the audience is free to find their own meaning in the works. Discussion of these pieces, alongside works by other artists who broach topics of feminism, gender, and relationships, exemplifies the capacity for art to infuse theory with personal insight, inspired and derived from the lives of both artist and viewer.

Multi-label classification on shorter featured dataset using optimization techniques
- Authors: Banerjee, Arunava
- Date: 2012
- Type: Text , Thesis , Masters
- Full Text: false
- Description: Classification of objects based on inherent properties is a general problem area encountered in diverse fields of knowledge. In terms of text classification, the problem presented in this work is based on two particular criteria for documents as given below: • Informativeness of feature sets - A feature set would comprise of words in a document. Presence of words that can be used to characterize a document in a corpus (database) is the informativeness of a feature set. • Multilabelness - documents can have content dealing with diverse topics These criteria are not localized to documents only, but can be generalized to other areas as well with little adaptation. In this thesis, the classification problem that is being investigated involve datasets containing the prescence of smaller number of features associated with a larger number of classes. The acronym SFML (Shorter Featured & Multi-Labeled) has been used to denote these types of datasets. Further, SFML type datasets can be encountered in various walks of life, like Medicine, SMS Services, Text Classification to name a few. In this thesis, the performance of various existing classification algorithms were tested on SFML datasets and their results compared. Further, a new classification algorithm based on optimization is also proposed for these types of datasets. Applications to the Adverse Drug Reaction problem and phishing profiling problem have been considered here. Classification results show that the proposed algorithm performs better than existing classification algorithms as the number of features tend to decrease.

Secret suburbia : An anthology of concepts relating to house and home
- Authors: Mears, Paul
- Date: 2006
- Type: Text , Thesis , Masters
- Full Text: false
- Description: The aim of this research project has been to merge components of ideas relating to House and Home that have been formed by the inherently sensitive autobiographical nature of my own experience whilst growing up in a suburban environment. Naturally, these symbols or metaphors of the mundane reveal much more than what superficial impressions allow. They invite the viewer into an inner world of dream /memory and hypothesis that hopefully invokes within the viewer a desire to reach beyond their own perceptions of the everyday, and to re-examine the source of their own identity, thereby bringing some new emphasis to their own significant journey.

- Date: 2004
- Type: Text , Thesis , Masters , PhD
- Full Text: false
- Description: "Group decision-making usually involves a process of discussion and evaluation of alternatives. Important aspects of a group decision support system are: freedom to participate; the ability to explicitly present points of view; the ability to augment or oppose views by supporting evidence and reasoning; and the ability to use and consider other additional views .... The overall aim of this work is to develop an approach that can alleviate some of the problems associated with group commuication and consensus decision-making by effectively supporting group discussions towards consensus. Towards achieving this goal we have developed an approach called ConSULT (Consensus based on a Shared Understanding of a Leading Topic) as a computer-mediated framework to allow argumentation, collection and evaluation of discussion and group decision-making. This approach employs existing theories and techniques in computer-mediated communication, argumentation, Delphi and voting." -- Abstract.

Copper loss into rotary holding furnace slag
- Authors: Burrows, Alistair
- Date: 1999
- Type: Text , Thesis , Masters
- Full Text: false
- Description: The Rotary Holding Furnace (RHF) is used in combination with the Copper Isasmelt Furnace as a settling vessel. This study investigated the phenomenon of entrained copper losses into RHF slag. Research work was conducted by laboratory-scale flow modelling, and by plant sampling of the RHF at Mount Isa Mines Limited. Laboratory fold modelling was conducted to measure the residence time distribution of a simulated slag layer in a l;'0 -scale model of the RHF. A novel technique, involving a copper tracer dissolved in an organic solvent extractant solution, was used for these experiments. Plant trials complemented the laboratory work with a variety of slag sampling campaigns. Residence time tests were also attempted on the RHF slag. In combination, the laboratory and plant scale experimental work performed in this investigation helped to highlight some likely causes of entrained copper loss in the RHF. Laboratory cold modelling of the RHF suggests that the depth of the upper liquid layer is • likely to affect the fluid flow patterns, and therefore the residence time distribution expected of the layer. A stratification of the flow was prevalent in thick upper liquid layers, but absent when thin upper layers were used. A stagnant region within the upper layer0 0f the model was identified. The introduction of gas injection through porous plugs caused mixing within the upper liquid layer. Stable waves were produced at the liquid liquid interfate. ' .. Plant experiments were constrained by commercial operating schedules. Several parameters were investigated during two different periods of experimental work. Granulated slag sampling indicated a link between the duration of continuous slag discharge and the copper content of the slag. Evidence was found that suggests the presence of interfacial waves.

- Description: "This thesis presents a considered artistic statement about how I experience and how I strive to embody, my notion of reality through the process of painting and drawing. It considers the activity of the creation of reality through a synthesis of perceptual and conceptual functioning. The thesis proposes that when a painted surface is viewed, the marks on this plane are arranged by the mind of the viewer to form an image which becomes infused with meaning. The created visual structures, in this way, promote a formerly undiscovered, conceptual reality."
