An extensive fire followed almost immediately by a large scale flood occurred in the semi-arid/arid Olary Creek area in southwest New South Wales. In order to monitor the short and long term effect of these extreme events on vegetation, replicate paired plots were established in the flooded, burnt, and both flooded and burnt landscapes. The plots were 25 m square and one pair of each plot was fenced to exclude grazing animals. We report here on the long-term effect of this disturbance on terrestrial and arboreal invertebrates thirteen years after the events, using Formicidae and Collembola as exemplars. Our results showed that abundance and species richness of both Formicidae and Collembola were more affected by vegetation on the plots and only indirectly by impacts, while the vegetation was determined by the impact history on different land units. Perennial native grasses were favoured by the flooding and rainfall resulting in a high abundance of species in the genus Corynephoria (Collembola: Symphypleona) mainly on swales, while Formicidae species were trapped in highest numbers where the dune vegetation of hummock grassland (Triodia scariosa) was abundant on control plots and plots affected by fire. Grazing had little effect on these invertebrates. These results suggest that optimal management of invertebrate biodiversity in the region needs a mosaic of strategies with both fire and flood providing benefits.

The indigenous Lachnagrostis filiformis colonized extensive areas of dry lake beds in Victoria, Australia, during the drought from 1997 to 2009. Large numbers of the plants' detached seed heads disperse in the wind, lodging against nearby housing, fences and other obstacles. This accumulation of material creates a fire hazard, degrades townships' aesthetics and presents a nuisance to the communities of lake-side towns. This study aimed to examine the effects of various control methods on L.?filiformis in the short and long term. Although herbicide applications, slashing, grazing and burning were found to be effective in controlling the blown L.?filiformis seed heads in the short term, they failed to prevent subsequent reinvasion and can increase its abundance in the long term. The late application of herbicide resulted in an increase in the foliage cover and seed-head biomass of L.?filiformis by up to 37% and 150%, respectively, in the year following the treatment application. The results from this study highlight how management focused on achieving short-term goals, without consideration of the successional trajectory after implementation, can not only fail but be counter-productive in the long term. In order to achieve sustainable management, the fundamental ecological processes that promote the establishment and persistence of the weed need to be addressed.
Effects of Tetranychus lintearius (Acari : Tetranychidae) on the structure and water potential in the foliage of the invasive Ulex europaeus (Fabaceae) in Australia

Unfed parenchyma cells display signs of stress, either exhibiting deformed cell organelles aligned along the walls of vacant cells or with cells with no well-defined cell organelles. Subsequent to T. lintearius feeding, leaves externally manifest bleaching. After feeding by a population of T. lintearius, leaf water potential is decreased by 30% and tender shoots lose their turgor, indicating water-related stress. Tetranychus lintearius has the potential to decelerate vigour and retard the competitiveness of U. europaeus by inflicting stress. Our findings reinforce the use of T. lintearius in the biological management of populations of U. europaeus in temperate Australia.

Five age classes (unrestored, 4–6 years old, 8–10 years old, 12–14 years old and remnant areas) and two landforms (upper hills and lower hills) were considered. The diversity of woody plant species—which have easily recognisable reproductive material and which all recruit seedlings—provides easily measured parameters that have the potential to allow the determination of early establishment success and long-term ecological development of restored ecosystems. Results Restoration plantings developed in a hybrid state towards a benchmark in the lower hills; seedling species composition differed significantly among age classes, increasing in similarity with time since restoration, with some divergence from the target pathway. Composition of functional groups with reproductive outputs was also significantly different among age classes; however, a restoration trajectory was only evident in the upper hills where sites converged towards the target goal. Conclusions Divergence or deviation from the restoration trajectory was not deemed to be a restoration failure, as the variety of functional groups with fruits and diversity of seedlings recruiting indicated a potential increase in resilience in the future due to greater variability across the landscape. Plant recruitment was effective in detecting development trends towards a restoration target in this study and therefore may be a useful measure that contributes to determining ecological restoration success

Altitudinal trends were evident with a small number of species only occurring at the high altitudes and others only at low altitudes. Only a few species appeared to occur at all altitudes sampled. 7. Ordination plots showed that Collembola assemblages at lower altitude sites on the Warra transect were more similar to each other than those at the higher altitude sites on Mount Weld which formed three clusters: 1100; 1200 and 1300 m; and 800, 900 and 1000 m. 8. Mount Weld sites 600 and 700 m faunas were most similar to Warra sites so forming a continuum in altitudinal zonation between Warra and Mount Weld. 9. PERMANOVA analysis of monthly pitfall catches in 2001 and 2002 showed differences between months and altitudes on both transects and that the differences between months were more distinct at the lower altitude Warra sites than on the higher altitude Mount Weld sites. This difference was particularly marked for the month of February, which was the only month surveyed in both years. 10.Much of the change in faunal assemblages along the Warra and Mount Weld altitudinal transect seemed to be the result of changes in vegetation cover. Often, this fodder type may be supplied free of charge to graziers in distress due to circumstances that follow natural disasters such as bushfires, drought, and flood. However, because of the obvious urgency arising from these situations, it is suspected that much relief fodder may unintentionally pose an elevated risk for dispersal of weeds since it may be supplied from pasture not normally used for trade in fodder, and therefore is of unknown quality. Previous destructive method to detect weed propagules in bales of fodder are cumbersome, time consuming and of limited ecological and statistical value. Therefore, objective of this paper was to development of a convenient method to assess round pasture hay bales for the presence of weed propagules, to prevent unintentional spread of noxious species in hay bales. To examine this objective known quantity of seeds were added in a series of distributions to bales of seed free pasture hay, and a positive correlation for the amount of seed added per bale with that recovered in core samples was observed. Whilst the number of seeds detected per bale varied according to the distribution of seeds within the bales and the number of cores analysed, the absolute detection of seeds suggests that this sampling method is worthy of further examination. In addition, a pragmatic estimation of bale remnants after stock feeding has been investigated to more closely estimate the potential size of the remaining seed bank. The authors propose that development of this approach is timely, in the light of future climatic uncertainty driving extreme weather events that increase the need for relief fodder, which can be a potential vector for the spread of noxious weed seeds.

The development of faster, more reliable, and non-destructive sampling methods is essential to increase the fodder industry's capacity to prevent the dispersal of noxious weeds to previously unaffected locales.

Although red deer (Cervus elaphus) have the potential to play a major role in influencing the structure and composition of vegetation, little is known about the dietary preferences of red deer in Australia. In the Grampians National Park, Victoria, where there is a large, established red deer population, there has been concern over the condition of woodlands, with lack of perennial seedling recruitment observed. We estimated the diets of 12 red deer using macroscopic sorting techniques. We examined rumen contents of seven male and five female red deer from four woodland Ecological Vegetation Classes, which indicate that they act as intermediate feeders. A wide variety of plants were ingested, with evergreen tree species, small trees and woody shrubs making up a large proportion of the diet, along with grasses. This study found that red deer show significantly different dietary intake due to sex, with females consuming a diet much higher in grasses, while males consume more trees and shrubs. These findings have implications for the management of red deer populations within the park and broader implications for their effects on Australian ecosystems.

N. neesiana seeds, when mature, are sharp, causing injury to livestock, thus posing a problem in fodder bales. However, there is little data to demonstrate whether this process is useful to reduce infestations or the harmful properties of N. neesiana. Therefore, the minimum duration of ensilage required to reduce the viability of N. neesiana seeds was investigated, both with and without addition of ensilage inoculants in this process. Also, the decreasing propensity of the seeds to injure livestock, after various times and conditions of ensilage, was assessed. Ensilage inoculant reduced seed germination probability to zero after 35 days. When no inoculant was added, zero viability was achieved after 42 days. A qualitative assessment of the hardness of ensilaged seeds found seed husks were softer (and therefore safer) after 42 days, whether inoculant was used or not. Therefore, we suggest that both the viability of N. neesiana seeds and hardness of seed casings are significantly reduced after 42 days, thereby reducing the risks of seed dispersal and injury to livestock.

y Salvia verbenaca L., wild sage (Lamiaceae) is native to western and southern Europe. In Australia S. verbenaca is considered an environmental weed with high invasiveness often growing on disturbed sites: tracks, roadsides and around earth tanks. Little is known about the ecology of this invasive species in Australia. Therefore, our objectives in this study were to determine: (i) seedling emergence in relation to sowing depth, (ii) density ofsoilseed bank, (iii) allelopathic effects, (iv) favourable conditions for seed germination of three month old and nine years old seeds, and (v) seed longevity. Of four burial depths, only surface sown seeds germinated and survived. From the soil seedbank, S. verbenaca density was 343 ± 198 m−2. For the allelopathic effects of S. verbenaca, neither the extract nor the leachate inhibited germination of L. sativa; however, the growth of the radicle of seedlings was shown to decrease. Germination was highest at 20°C under 12 h light/12 h dark. Burial of seeds in the field prior to germination reduced viability over time. Germination of three month old seed wassignificantly less than nine year old seed. In conclusion, it is clear that S. verbenaca functions as a casual weed in arid and semi-arid environments of Australia. Understanding the plants’ ecological characteristics in this study will help us take appropriate control measures for this species.
