- Dr James Stewart was an Ulster physician and surgeon who practised medicine in Ballarat during the 1850s and 1860s. His family were originally from Scotland and had settled in County Tyrone as part of the plantation of Ulster. As a doctor from Ulster from a Scottish background he is part of an important fragment of the Scottish diaspora.
