How lived experience mediated my gold, ribbons, puzzles and morals research motivations : a reflective introspection

  • Description: Studies on factors that motivate researchers conclude that financial rewards, recognition, curiosity and a desire to contribute; the so-called, Gold, Ribbons, Puzzle and Morals motivating factors, combine to explain why individuals start and continue to be researchers. Lived experience with significant, often life-changing events as a patient, carer, victim, or bystander has motivated many, directly or indirectly, including me, to become researchers. In this chapter, I draw on introspection to examine my journey through 25 years of research experience in university settings. I use concepts from dual systems theories that identify intuition and cognition as two processes that come together to explain how key events and situations in life have influenced my decisions. This illustrates how critical events have mediated the Gold, Ribbon, Puzzle and Morals factors that were motivating my research efforts.

  • Description: Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM), which leverages the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) and autonomous systems, has grown in popularity recently. In RPM, the IoMT sense a patient's biophysical data and transmits it in real time while the autonomous system processes the data for clinical notifications and storage. However, RPM deployments face two diverse challenges: how to present continuous data so that healthcare professionals can quickly interpret data streams and how to manage a great deal of missing data that occurs in RPM. Several studies suggested techniques for imputing missing data in static databases, which are unsuitable for RPM. A method for constantly streaming healthcare data to medical experts involves summarizing vital signs information into a numerical score, such as the Modified Early Warning Score (MEWS), which may be visually displayed to highlight MEWS patterns over a certain period. However, a MEWS chart is simplistic and more sophisticated ways to present data visually for straightforward interpretation are needed. This research proposes a solution for the visualization and missing data challenges by identifying patterns in the RPM data. First, a pattern-matching technique is proposed to address the missing data by considering the correlation and variability of the vital signs, resulting in a comparable correct match rate. Second, we transform the observed raw physiological vital signs data into concepts we call trust, frequency, trend, and slope parameters for visualization and automated alerts. The proposed approach can better support clinical decision-making than the MEWS. Comprehensive visualization approaches and missing data solutions can improve the quality and dependability of patient risk assessments. © 2023 IEEE.

  • Description: This book aims to foster collaborations between patients who have intense lived experience with a medical condition or family violence and researchers investigating them. Inviting patients or survivors into the research team is found to have significant advantages, and chapters review the literature on the benefits they can bring to investigative research teams. The collaboration can take place at multiple stages of research from helping to research design, participating in co-investigators, contributing to the interpretation of results, etc. The conditions addressed in this book include medical conditions from anxiety, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, lupus, asthma, chronic kidney disease, etc. The authors are higher degree students, academics, and active research team members who share their experiences. This is be instrumental in helping patients and survivors decide whether to transition to research. It will also support research team leaders in determining how to benefit from the new perspectives researchers with lived experience bring. The personal narratives provide insight into the challenges and rewards of having lived experience while conducting research.

  • Description: Communication theorists discern six types of dialogue that occur between participants in discourse with each other: persuasion, inquiry, deliberation, information-seeking, eristic, and discovery. Although social media use in health care settings has been investigated from diverse perspectives, few studies have analysed social media interactions as dialogues and the implications for individualised care. The objective of this study is to identify the extent to which the six types of dialogue can be discerned from the self-reported social media activities of health care providers and the implications for individualised care. To realise the objectives of this study, transcripts of the interview of health care providers that use social media were thematically analysed using NVivo software. Findings reveal that each of the six types of dialogue is discernible from the social media posts of health care providers, and these dialogues help narrow the communication gap between stakeholders in health care. This suggests the use of social media in health care can be analysed using dialogue theory and paves the way for future research to discover precursors that trigger a dialogue shift from one type to another and a new way to assess the effectiveness of social media. © 2024 Owner/Author.

  • Description: Causal loop diagrams (CLD) that emerged from systems thinking disciplines have been used to simulate complex inter-dependencies between causal factors in diverse phenomena. This paper highlights a process for generating a casual loop diagrams to represent the quality of electronic health record (EHR) ecosystem in a medical context. The quality inherent in the use of electronic health records for specific clinical purposes is taken to depend on factors including data integrity, reliability, relevance, timeliness and completeness. By improving the electronic health record ecosystem quality, health care providers can enhance their data sharing practices, and personalised patient care, while reducing the probabilities of medical errors. Ultimately the CLD can be used to run multiple simulations for several clinical case scenarios to understand the impact of various case phenomena on the quality of the electronic health record ecosystem. © 2023 ACM.

  • Description: Employee ambidexterity (EA) is becoming increasingly recognised as a significant factor in enhancing individual and organisational performance across diverse industries. Ambidexterity refers to the capacity to exploit and explore organisational resources simultaneously. Scholars from diverse industry sectors have been motivated to delve deeper into the topic of EA due to its growing popularity. The objective of conducting a scoping review was to scrutinise the existing literature and identify the key drivers and constraints that impact EA to thrive in the changing work landscape. The insights gained from this review can assist decision-makers in formulating effective strategies to cultivate the ambidexterity skills of their workforce and achieve desirable outcomes. This review adheres to the PRISMA-ScR protocol. Articles were obtained from databases including Scopus, Web of Science, and EBSCOhost (Academic Search Complete, Business Source Complete). The body of literature concerning EA is in its nascent stage. 23 articles assessing EA's performance outcomes were identified using targeted search terms and thorough screening. After conducting a thorough thematic analysis using the iterative categorisation (IC) technique, tailored for scoping a review, we successfully identified twenty-nine factors contributing to the enhancement of EA, meticulously organised into five distinct categories: organisational factors, social connectedness, employee behaviour, employee personality, and work environment related factors. Similarly, we discovered four factors that impede EA: functional tenure, team identification, bounded discretion, and conscientiousness. Our findings underscore the profound impact of employee ambidexterity on distinct types of performance. Among the sixteen types of performance reported to be enhanced by EA, ten are linked to individual performance, while six are tied to organisational performance. Notably, our analysis revealed that nearly all studies have relied on cross-sectional research methods except for one. However, we advocate for the exploration of longitudinal studies as they hold the promise of offering a more comprehensive understanding of EA. The paper presents valuable insights into how to cultivate ambidextrous capabilities in the workforce for unparalleled success in today's rapidly evolving work environment. Additionally, it identifies several intriguing avenues for future research that could further elucidate and bridge existing knowledge gaps. © 2023

  • Description: Blockchain (BC) is a burgeoning technology that has emerged as a promising solution to peer-to-peer communication security and privacy challenges. As a revolutionary technology, blockchain has drawn the attention of academics and researchers. Cryptocurrencies have already effectively utilized BC technology. Many researchers have sought to implement this technique in different sectors, including the Internet of Things. To store and manage IoT data, we present in this paper a lightweight BC-based architecture with a modified raft algorithm-based consensus protocol. We designed a Device Agent that executes a novel registration procedure to connect IoT devices to the blockchain. We implemented the framework on Docker using the Go programming language. We have simulated the framework on a Linux environment hosted in the cloud. We have conducted a detailed performance analysis using a variety of measures. The results demonstrate that our suggested solution is suitable for facilitating the management of IoT data with increased security and privacy. In terms of throughput and block generation time, the results indicate that our solution might be 40% to 45% faster than the existing blockchain. © 2013 IEEE.

  • Description: While resilience is acknowledged as a complex construct and one that is difficult to assess, universities are recognising its importance. They are beginning to invest in research and services aimed at building student resilience. However, there is limited research into the levels of, and contributors to, student resilience. This study explored the effects of an experiential learning tool, business simulation games (BSGs), on the development of IS students' academic resilience. The researcher interviewed instructors conducting ERPsim labs to find out their views regarding the impact of BSGs on three aspects of the Resilience at University (RAU) scale: academic buoyancy, personal competence and social competency. Findings from the instructors' interviews demonstrated that Business simulations help students build resilience by offering a safe environment where they can fail, learn, and try again.   • Description: This qualitative research examines the effects of ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) simulations, on the problem-solving skills of Information Systems (IS) and Supply Chain Management (SCM) students in Australian universities. The study emphasises the development of six core problem-solving skills: critical thinking, creativity, decision-making, teamwork, self-awareness, and resilience through simulations. The results, based on interviews conducted from ERPsim lab instructors, highlight ERPsim labs' transformational potential in encouraging holistic student growth, particularly in integrating theoretical understandings with real SCM issues. These laboratories are critical in demonstrating the real-world intricacies of supply chains, cementing their relevance in both IS and SCM courses. While acknowledging geographical and sample size constraints, the study proposes broadening research topics and including student perspectives. This paper reinforces the importance of experiential learning techniques in modern pedagogy, emphasising their tremendous impact on preparing students for varied professional landscapes.   • Description: Oral health in Australia’s older population is of great concern and studies show that two-thirds of residents in aged care facilities have significant oral problems. Cognitive, and functional alterations that accumulate while ageing leads to increasing care dependency which then impacts on the ability to maintain good oral health. This paper presents ideas for a pilot investigation into the effectiveness of smart brush technology for improving oral health among the elderly. The proposed pilot study will follow a design that incorporates a Critical Realist methodological perspective known as the Context- Initiative-Mechanism-Outcome approach with a theoretical perspective, the theory of interactive Media effects (TIME). This paper presents a proposition suggesting smart brush as a means for improving oral health among the elderly through identification of context (frail elderly), initiative (smart brush), mechanism (interaction with the smart brush affordances), and outcome (improved oral health). Both qualitative (interviews) and quantitative data (plaque score, brushing duration/coverage) will be collected and analyzed for testing the proposition

  • Description: In recent years, organisational software process education has seen a considerable uptick in interest in adopting business simulation games (BSGs) as a novel learning resource. However, the lack of reliable and valid instruments to evaluate simulation learning outcomes inhibits the adoption and progress of simulation in Information System education. To fill this need, we performed a systematic review of 33 empirical studies using the PRISMA declaration approach to identify the different evaluation methods used to analyse BSG learning outcomes. We created a concept matrix using a didactic framework that categorised these assessment methodologies into three game stages (pre-game, in-game and post-game). We established a comprehensive evaluation strategy using this concept matrix, which teachers and researchers may use to choose the best appropriate evaluation method to analyse a wide range of learning outcomes of business simulation games.   • Description: Over the last few years, business simulation games (BSGs) in higher education have attracted attention. BSGs tend to actively engage students with course material, promoting higher engagement and motivation and enabling learning outcomes. Increasingly, researchers are trying to explore the full potential of these games with an upsurge of research in the BSG field in recent years. There is a need to understand the current state of research and future research opportunities; however, there is a lack of recent systematic literature reviews in BSG literature. This study addresses this gap by systematically compiling online empirical research from January 2015 to April 2022. We followed PRISMA guidelines to identify fifty-seven (57) papers reporting empirical evidence of the effectiveness of BSGs in teaching and learning. Findings showed that BSGs improve learning outcomes such as knowledge acquisition, cognitive and interactive skills, and behaviour. The review also summarises different issues concerning the integration of BSGs into the curriculum, learning theories used in the selected studies, and assessment methods used to evaluate student achievement in learning outcomes. The findings of this review summarise the current research activities and indicate existing deficiencies and potential research directions that can be used as the basis for future research into the use of BSGs in higher education. © 2022 Nadia Faisal et al.

  • Description: Following the start of the pandemic, online synchronous learning has grown significantly. The higher education sector is searching for new creative ways to provide the information online because of the switch from face-to-face to online synchronous course delivery. Students are also becoming accustomed to studying online, and research has shown that synchronous online learning has a variety of effects on student engagement. For instance, according to statistics from the National Survey of Student Engagement, students are less likely to participate in collaborative learning, studentfaculty interactions, and conversations when learning online if they use quantitative reasoning during face-to-face instruction. Additionally, studies suggest that because they depend on their devices to take online classes, students feel more alienated from their lecturers. This has been linked to a drop in contacts with peers and teachers as a result. By using a cutting-edge deep learning model to predict learner engagement behaviour in a synchronous teaching environment, our research intends to improve online engagement. The model with a clever trigger will encourage the disengaged pupils to communicate with the teachers online. Smart triggers will be built around factors that have been found, focusing on disengaged students to engage them in real-time with automatic, personalized feedback. © 2022 IEEE.

  • Description: Conversational AI is a sub-domain of artificial intelligence that deals with speech-based or text-based AI agents that have the capability to simulate and automate conversations and verbal interactions. A Goal Oriented Conversational Agent (GOCA) is a conversational AI agent that attempts to solve a specific problem for the users as per their inputs. The development of Reinforcement Learning algorithms has opened up new opportunities in research related to conversational AI, due to the striking similarity the algorithm bears to the way a conversation takes place. This chapter aims to describe a novel, hybrid conversational AI architecture using Deep Reinforcement Learning that can give state-of-the-art results on the tasks of Intent Classification, Entity Recognition, Dialog Management, State Tracking, Information Retrieval and Natural Language Response Generation. The architecture also consists of external AI modules, focused on carrying out intelligent tasks pertaining to the healthcare sector.   • Description: Risk assessments for numerous conditions can now be performed cost-effectively and accurately using emerging point of care devices coupled with machine learning algorithms. In this article, the case is advanced that point of care testing in combination with risk assessments generated with artificial intelligence algorithms, applied to the universal screening of the general public for multiple conditions at one session, represents a new kind of in-expensive screening that can lead to the early detection of disease and other public health benefits. A case study of a diabetes screening clinic in a rural area of Australia is presented to illustrate its benefits. Universal, poly-aetiological screening is shown to meet the ten World Health Organisation criteria for screening programmes. © Elsevier Inc.
