However, finding a method to model the complex physical process of rainfall, especially in Australia where the climate is highly variable, is still a major challenge. The aims of this study are to: (a) develop an optimization based clusterwise linear regression method, (b) develop new prediction methods based on clusterwise linear regression, (c) assess the influence of geographic regions on the performance of prediction models in predicting monthly and weekly rainfall in Australia, (d) determine the combined influence of meteorological variables on rainfall prediction in Australia, and (e) carry out a comparative analysis of new and existing prediction techniques using Australian rainfall data. In this study, rainfall data with five input meteorological variables from 24 geographically diverse weather stations in Australia, over the period January 1970 to December 2014, have been taken from the Scientific Information for Land Owners (SILO). We also consider the climate zones when selecting weather stations, because Australia experiences a variety of climates due to its size. The data was divided into training and testing periods for evaluation purposes. In this study, optimization based clusterwise linear regression is modified and new prediction methods are developed for rainfall prediction. The proposed method is applied to predict monthly and weekly rainfall. The prediction performance of the clusterwise linear regression method was evaluated by comparing observed and predicted rainfall values using the performance measures: root mean squared error, the mean absolute error, the mean absolute scaled error and the Nash-Sutclie coefficient of efficiency. The proposed method is also compared with the clusterwise linear regression based on the maximum likelihood estimation, linear support vector machines for regression, support vector machines for regression with radial basis kernel function, multiple linear regression, artificial neural networks with and without hidden layer and k-nearest neighbours methods using computational results. Initially, to determine the appropriate input variables to be used in the investigation, we assessed all combinations of meteorological variables. The results confirm that single meteorological variables alone are unable to predict rainfall accurately. The prediction performance of all selected models was improved by adding the input variables in most locations. To assess the influence of geographic regions on the performance of prediction models and to compare the prediction performance of models, we trained models with the best combination of input variables and predicted monthly and weekly rainfall over the test periods. The results of this analysis confirm that the prediction performance of all selected models varied considerably with geographic regions for both weekly and monthly rainfall predictions. It is found that models have the lowest prediction error in the desert climate zone and highest in subtropical and tropical zones. The results also demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is capable of finding the patterns and trends of the observations for monthly and weekly rainfall predictions in all geographic regions. In desert, tropical and subtropical climate zones, the proposed method outperform other methods in most locations for both monthly and weekly rainfall predictions. In temperate and grassland zones the prediction performance of the proposed model is better in some locations while in the remaining locations it is slightly lower than the other models.

Random finite element method prediction and optimisation for open pit mine slope stability analysis

In practice, the spatial variability of materials is not commonly considered as a routine component of slope stability analysis. The process of quantifying spatially variable parameters, as well as the modelling of their behaviour is often a complex undertaking. Currently, there are no large-scale commercial software packages containing in-built methods for modelling spatial variability within the Finite Element environment. Furthermore, conventional Limit Equilibrium Methods (LEM) incorporating spatial variability are unable to consider the stress/strain characteristics of these materials. The following research seeks to accurately model the slope mechanics of spatially variable soils, adopting The Random Finite Element Method (RFEM) developed by Griffiths and Fenton (2004) to determine slope failure mechanisms and safety factors. Techniques are developed to produce a set of optimised Random Finite Element Method simulations using the Monte Carlo Method. Additionally, random field analysis techniques are investigated to compare and categorise soil parameter fluctuation, providing a direct relationship between random field properties and slope failure surfaces. Optimisation and analysis techniques are implemented to examine the effects of cross-sectional geometries and input parameter distributions on failure mechanisms, safety factors and probabilities of failure. Cross-sectional RFEM analysis is performed in the Finite Element Method (FEM) software package Abaqus, with the techniques of this research demonstrated for a large open-pit brown coal mine located in the state of Victoria, Australia. The outcome of this research is a comprehensive procedure for optimised RFEM simulation and analysis.

- Description: There is a problem with western patriarchal capitalist narratives of love and connected models of subjectivity which some feminisms, in particular, neoliberal (post)feminism, continue rather than criticise. This is a problem, not only because these feminisms uphold existing patriarchal structures and values, but because models of patriarchal subjectivity are founded on a repression and devaluation of love that contributes to what I am naming a ‘crisis of love’ in neoliberal societies. While some solutions to this problem have been offered, including by feminist love studies scholars, none of the solutions address the whole issue – for example, feminisms that ignore issues of spirituality and the female subject’s relationship to the divine, and the impact of myth on the psyche. Until these aspects are included in a rethinking of both female subjectivity and narratives of love, the problem will not be solved. There are many kinds of love but Eros in particular, which is such a charged narrative in western patriarchal capitalist society, is the kind of love that most urgently needs to be rethought and re(dis)covered. Through examination of the major founding myth of female subjectivity for western patriarchy – the Madonna/whore binary – a pathway to addressing this problem of love becomes possible. Rethinking this binary according to reinterpretations of the myths of Aphrodite and Demeter offers a rethinking of Eros as a creative, life-affirming power. This renewed narrative of Eros creates new models of female subjectivity – and the potentiality for new models of ethics – that challenge the contemporary neoliberal paradigm.

- Description: Background Incorporation of active learning approaches in the preparation of nursing students for future educational roles is an imperative. Reciprocal peer tutoring (RPT) is an active teaching/learning approach, in which individuals from similar academic levels rotate teaching/learning roles. This study aimed to explore the outcomes of RPT on undergraduate nursing students learning. Design/Methods A sequential explanatory mixed methods design, incorporating pre-post intervention surveys and focus groups with a convenience sample of 102 final-year students, from a cohort of 132 (RR = 77.3%), from a regional Australian university campus. Prior to attendance, online resources were provided on teaching fundamentals and two selected clinical skills, namely tracheostomy suctioning and intravenous cannulation. Attending participants were randomly allocated into pairs, rotating teaching and learning roles within clinical skills laboratories. Pre-post intervention survey tools examined knowledge and self-reported attitudes to a peer teaching and clinical teaching preferences (Clinical Teaching Preference Questionnaire). Post-intervention measures included a peer teaching experience (Peer Teaching Experience Questionnaire). Focus group interviews (n = 4) were conducted with 22 participants, to further understand students’ RPT experiences. Results There was positive improvement in attitudes to peer teaching (M = 49.2, SD = 10.0 to M = 52.3, SD = 8.2, p < 0.05, [95% CI = 0.7 to 5.4]). Knowledge scores also increased significantly (M = 6.9, SD = 2.0 to M = 9.7, SD = 1.9), p < 0.05 [95% CI = 2.3 to 3.2]. Aggregate mean knowledge scores increased more for peer teachers (M = 3.3) than they did for peer learners (M = 2.2). Thematic outcomes from focus groups indicated challenging yet beneficial journeys, collective learning outcomes, along with benefits of RPT including enhanced teaching, self-confidence, communication, and independent and collaborative learning. Conclusion This study concludes that RPT is effective in clinical skills teaching and sets a foundation for further research.

Methane (CH₄) is controlled in collieries currently only for safety, statutory compliance or for capture and use reasons. But today, there is pressure on collieries to reduce not only mining costs but their greenhouse gas emissions. It is known that 65% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with collieries come from fugitive ventilation air methane (VAM). The oxidising machinery to mitigate these fugitive emissions is expensive, has safety concerns and is not widely used at present for these reasons. But widespread concern over GHG emissions means that it is desirable to lower VAM emissions now. One safe, low-cost and non-gas drainage solution explored herein to reduce emissions, is a method to prevent some CH₄ from entering the mine airstream and becoming VAM in the first place. This emissions reduction method underwent a 12-month trial in a colliery in the Hunter Valley using six different quantified and costed non-gas drainage measures. A reduction in fugitive emissions of 95,398 t/CO₂-e below that projected for the subsequent 12 months was quantified, at a mitigation cost of A$1.08 t/CO₂-e. The level of mitigation achieved, represents approximately 20% of the mine’s VAM emissions. This research has also further tested the method used in the Hunter Valley trial, by visiting two other large collieries in Queensland, and assessing the two most successful mitigation measures from the Hunter Valley trial (roadway sealing and pressure balancing of sealed panels) against operational conditions at these collieries by ventilation modelling, using their measured gas, airflow and seal pressure data.

- Description: Encouraging reflective leadership practice is a recognised focus for coaches and consultants in primary schools. Despite the wealth of knowledge on coaching and consulting in organisational learning, there is less known about the transition between these two interactions and the purpose behind this. This self-study of my practice as a regional school improvement officer in Victoria, Australia, details my interaction with six teacher-leaders, who considered school improvement strategies by constructing a pattern-block representation of the structures within their schools. The research questions posed were: “What do teacher-leaders reflect upon when considering school improvement approaches?” and “How does the external facilitator encourage teacherleaders to reflect upon their practice?” Research undertaken for this study was used to develop a range of statements related to Donald Schön’s theory of reflective practice, particularly reflection-in-action. The statements were presented as a stimulus for action in practice and encompassed a range of tensions. Tensions included; orchestrating change by moving between the current situation and a preferred future; making connections by acknowledging the complexity of the situation whilst attempting to create order; developing a strategy from the consideration of a shared vision and a written plan; and undertaking leadership by moving between hierarchical, distributive and self-organising structures. Tacit and explicit knowledge was evident when reflecting-inaction. Finally I explored how, as the external facilitator, I encouraged reflection by moving between coaching and consulting interactions. I began this research by examining the practice of others. However, the greatest learning I achieved related to how I reflected-in-action and my understanding of self-study in practice. Initially in this study, I placed myself at the centre of the research and considered this a selfin- study; however, as the study progressed, I examined both my practice and the research simultaneously, terming this self-and-study, and, finally, from my analysis of the research when the study concluded, I developed a series of statements that could be used as a stimulus for future action, which I refer to as self-from-study. The larger implication for this research therefore relates to my understanding of my own reflection-in-action and how by embracing a number of tensions one can consider a range of possibilities for improvement.

- Description: Whilst the notion of the ‘Reflective Space’ could arguably encompass many conceptual positions and propositions, for the purposes of this research investigation the ‘Reflective Space’ referred to in the title of this exegesis will focus upon what I consider as an emerging and growing consciousness of the natural world. As a theoretical and conceptual construct, the investigation considers how this growing consciousness can be seen to be expressed through the medium of representations of the Australian landscape. This work considers a number of contemporary theoretical positions and a number of relevant social and political questions; it also acknowledges that within such spheres of reflection, the issue of being sustainable in relation to our interactions and perceptions of this natural world looms as perhaps one of the most pressing of our time. While it will be acknowledged that the depiction of landscape enjoys a long-standing tradition within the Australian cultural mind, the suggestion will be made that certain aspects of these visualisations can be seen to be ‘reflective’ of a visual, cultural and physical degradation, and indeed even an apprehension of the physical ‘space’ that is represented as landscape. The investigation considers and reflects upon what can be observed as contentious and ambivalent attitudes expressed towards landscape perceived through works of art. Strategies for adopting a perceptual visual ethic grounded within the concepts and principles of sustainability will be presented for consideration. By applying such modes of interpretation to perceptions of land and landscape depiction, new appreciations for the cultural ‘space’ that is landscape will be developed. Such understandings will consider and reflect upon the temporal nature of our natural world. The thesis is this: that to be able to think and act in a sustainable fashion in relation to our environment, our perceptions and interpretations of visualisations of landscape must include a recognition that the land is a ‘temporal’ space, in which past and possible futures are immanent in the present.

Regeneration of sulfur rich amines in a combined capture system aimed to lower the cost of PCC in Australian coal fired power plants

- Description: Coal is the dominant and most reliable source of energy in Australia. However, the increasing global temperatures and its impact on the climate raises concerns on the use of coal worldwide. Due to availability of abundant, cheap quality coals, Australia is researching how it and its international customers can continue to use its abundant coal resources whilst limiting greenhouse emissions. Hence, low CO2 emitting energy technologies like carbon capture and storage (CCS) have an important role to play not only in power but also the cement and steel industries Post-combustion CO2 capture (PCC), the most developed technology in CCS using aqueous amines to capture CO2, still face challenges for its large-scale commercialisation. The cost of electricity with PCC rises to almost double that produced without integrating PCC technology in new power stations. The retrofit of PCC technology into existing power stations is very site specific and costs can be around half of the cost of building a new power plant. Apart from this, the implementation of PCC poses an energy penalty to the power station as the efficiency of the plant can drop almost by 10-11% due to the increased solvent heating and CO2 compression loads. Particularly with the nations like Australia, the cost of PCC installation is even higher as there are no flue gas desulfurisation (FGD) units in Australian power stations. The presence of harmful gases like SO2 in coal-fired power plant flue gases affect CO2 capture performance during PCC due to the higher affinity of amines to absorb stronger acidic gases against CO2 which is a weaker acid gas than SO2. These stronger acidic gases tend to form heat stable salts with the absorbent amines used to capture CO2 . Heat stable salts refer to the thermally non-regenerable protonated amines which are usually produced when the amine solution is contaminated by organic acids (Weiland et al., 2004). Hence, the bonded amine is not available for CO2 capture, increasing the requirement for makeup amine resulting in higher operating cost. Therefore, FGD units are an essential requirement before the installation of PCC facilities in a coal-fired power station. This results in a levelised cost of electricity in Australian power plants that is high compared to nations which have FGD installed in their power stations. CSIRO has developed a combined capture process to simultaneously capture CO2 and SO2 from Australian power plant flue gases using a single amine absorbent in order to lower the cost of PCC installation in Australia. The process generates a unique sulfur rich amine absorbent which needs regeneration. This thesis investigates various amine regeneration processes, using MEA as a reference, and their commercial viability to the CS-Cap process. Due to the unique nature of the sulfur rich absorbent generated in the CS-Cap process, its amine is recoverable through many other regeneration processes besides standard thermal reclamation. My thesis investigates the effectiveness of regeneration techniques like Ion exchange, Electro-dialysis, Crystallisation, Nano-filtration in regenerating the sulfur rich amine. Initially the theoretical investigation was carried as a part of literature review and further a brief exploratory laboratory scale evaluation of the most suited technologies was carried out. The results obtained from laboratory scale experimentation were fed to an Aspen Plus simulation model in order to understand the behaviour of the system under various operating conditions. Further a cost estimation was carried out in order to produce a high level cost for the selected regeneration technologies in the CS-Cap process. The cost of the regeneration technologies were further integrated into the overall CO2 capture process in order to compare the cost of standard FGD + PCC process against the CS-Cap process which answers the broader research question whether the CS-Cap process will be economical for Australian coal power plants. Overall this thesis reveals the effectiveness of various technologies in regenerating sulfur rich amines. It suggests CSIRO’s patented CS-Cap process is a cost-effective approach for capturing CO2 from Australian coal fired power plants despite its sensitivity to regeneration cost.

Relationships between pumping costs and water quality in optimal operation of regional multiquality water distribution systems

- Description: The operation of regional multiquality water distribution systems (WDSs) is a complex task involving multiple objectives in order to meet customer water quantity and quality requirements. These objectives, often conflicting, include scheduling of pumps to minimise pumping costs and mixing different quality waters from sources to ensure adequate quality water for customers. Evolutionary algorithms have been successfully applied to optimise operation of regional WDSs. Although a considerable reduction in pumping costs was demonstrated in past studies, other legitimate objectives, for example water quality, were not considered on an equal basis as they were included as a constraint. This single-objective approach precludes the tradeoffs between the objectives being obtained, so any insight on how to operate such a system cannot be provided should pumping costs and water quality be considered on equal basis. A multi-objective approach is applied in this thesis to optimise operation of regional multiquality WDSs considering pumping costs and water quality as legitimate objectives. Two optimisation models with increasing complexity are proposed. The first model considers two objectives, the pumping costs and a general water quality objective. The second model includes three objectives, the pumping costs and two water quality objectives for turbidity and salinity. The optimisation models are applied to three example networks from the literature using numerous scenarios and water quality data from the Wimmera Mallee Pipeline, Australia. A methodology is proposed to find the optimal solution for the multi‐objective optimisation of the WDS, which links a network simulator with a multi-objective genetic algorithm. Prior to optimisation, the performance of algorithm parameters is evaluated and their sensitivity analysed, for which a new methodology is developed. The following results were obtained. For the two-objective optimisation problem, there is a tradeoff with a competing nature between pumping costs and water quality. It means that reduction in pumping costs cannot be achieved without deterioration of water quality delivered to customers and vice versa. For the three-objective optimisation problem, interestingly, there is not a unique type of tradeoff (either competing or non-competing) between a particular pair of objectives. It is dependent on network hydraulics in combination with water quality at sources and customer water quality requirements. General principles behind the tradeoffs are formulated based on new categorisation of sources, so called consistent/inconsistent water quality (CWQ/IWQ) sources, in relation to customer water quality requirements. A practical approach for system operational strategy is developed for the purpose of long-term operational planning. It enables an operator to schedule supply from multiple sources with minimum pumping costs and customer water quality requirements being satisfied as much as possible, for all predicted water quality scenarios in the system.

Evolutionary algorithms have been successfully applied to optimise operation of regional WDSs. Although a considerable reduction in pumping costs was demonstrated in past studies, other legitimate objectives, for example water quality, were not considered on an equal basis as they were included as a constraint. This single-objective approach precludes the tradeoffs between the objectives being obtained, so any insight on how to operate such a system cannot be provided should pumping costs and water quality be considered on equal basis. A multi-objective approach is applied in this thesis to optimise operation of regional multiquality WDSs considering pumping costs and water quality as legitimate objectives. Two optimisation models with increasing complexity are proposed. The first model considers two objectives, the pumping costs and a general water quality objective. The second model includes three objectives, the pumping costs and two water quality objectives for turbidity and salinity. The optimisation models are applied to three example networks from the literature using numerous scenarios and water quality data from the Wimmera Mallee Pipeline, Australia. A methodology is proposed to find the optimal solution for the multi‐objective optimisation of the WDS, which links a network simulator with a multi-objective genetic algorithm. Prior to optimisation, the performance of algorithm parameters is evaluated and their sensitivity analysed, for which a new methodology is developed. The following results were obtained. For the two-objective optimisation problem, there is a tradeoff with a competing nature between pumping costs and water quality. It means that reduction in pumping costs cannot be achieved without deterioration of water quality delivered to customers and vice versa. For the three-objective optimisation problem, interestingly, there is not a unique type of tradeoff (either competing or non-competing) between a particular pair of objectives. It is dependent on network hydraulics in combination with water quality at sources and customer water quality requirements. General principles behind the tradeoffs are formulated based on new categorisation of sources, so called consistent/inconsistent water quality (CWQ/IWQ) sources, in relation to customer water quality requirements. A practical approach for system operational strategy is developed for the purpose of long-term operational planning. It enables an operator to schedule supply from multiple sources with minimum pumping costs and customer water quality requirements being satisfied as much as possible, for all predicted water quality scenarios in the system.

- Description: Structural optimisation is an important field of applied mathematics, which has proved useful in engineering projects. Reliability-based design optimisation (RBDO) can be considered a branch of structural optimisation. Different RBDO approaches have been applied in real world problems (e.g. vehicle side impact model, short column design, etc.). Double-loop, single-loop, and decoupled approaches are three categories in RBDO. This research focuses on double-loop approaches, which consider reliability analysis problems in their inner loops and design optimisation calculations in their outer loops. In recent decades, double-loop approaches have been studied and modified in order to improve their stability and efficiency, but many shortcomings still remain, particularly regarding reliability analysis methods. This thesis will concentrate on development of new reliability analysis methods that can be applied to solve RBDO problems. As a local optimisation algorithm, the conjugate gradient method will be adopted. Furthermore, a new method will be introduced to solve a reliability analysis problem in the polar space. The reliability analysis problem must be transformed into an unconstrained optimisation problem before solving in the polar space. Two methods will be introduced here and their stability and efficiency will be compared with the existing methods via numerical experiments. Next, we consider applications of RBDO models to electricity networks. Most of the current optimisation models of these networks are categorised as deterministic design optimisation models. A probabilistic constraint is introduced in this thesis for electricity networks. For this purpose, a performance function must be defined for a network in order to define safety and failure conditions. Then, new non-deterministic design optimisation models will be formulated for electricity networks by using the mentioned probabilistic constraint. These models are designed to keep failure probability of the network below a predetermined and accepted safety level.
