Refactoring for locks is widely used to improve the scalability and performance of concurrent programs. However, when refactoring from coarse-grained locks to ¯ne-grained locks, the behavior of concurrent programs may be changed. To this end, we present LockCheck, a consistency-checking approach based on the parallel extended ¯nite automaton for ¯ne-grained locks. First, we model the critical sections of concurrent programs through control °ow analysis and dependency analysis. Second, we sequentialize the concurrent programs to get all the possible transition paths. Furthermore, it reduces the exploration of the redundant paths using partial order theory to obtain the compared transition paths. Finally, we combine consistency rules to check the consistency of the program before and after refactoring. We evaluated LockCheck in ¯ve open-source projects. A total of 1528 refactoring operations have been evaluated and 93 inconsistent refactoring operations have been detected. The results show that LockCheck can e®ectively detect inconsistent behavior when coarse-grained locks are refactored into ¯ne-grained locks. #c World Scienti¯c Publishing Company.

This articles examines CDM in web services with a novel P6 model, which consists of 6 Ps: privacy, perception, propensity, preference, personalization and promised experience. This model integrates the existing 6 P elements of marketing mix as the system environment of CDM in web services. The new integrated P6 model deals with the inner world of the customer and incorporates what the customer think during the DM process. The proposed approach will facilitate the research and development of web services and decision support systems.

A popular saying exists with many variations which states that “Pride goes before a fall”. But perhaps in the case of the global stuttering community it could be seen that a fall has occurred even before general pride has been felt? From my point of view, pride of being a person who stutters has only ever been positively discussed or promoted within small circles of people who stutter, let alone promoted outside to the general non-stuttering public. The pure idea that you can be proud of the person that you have become and incorporate your stuttering into your identity in a positive manner is such a debatable topic and often the ember which flares very heated communication exchanges amongst people who stutter.

The case studies offer insights into the ways in which institutions are continuing to change directions in their teaching to meet changing demands for innovative teaching, learning and research in virtual worlds. This paper highlights the ways in which the authors are using virtual worlds to create opportunities for rich, immersive and authentic activities that would be difficult or not possible to achieve through more traditional approaches.

Living with a life-long medical condition or a serious disease requires a lot of research skills on how to access the best quality information to inform better decision-making of healthcare consumers. Relatives, friends, and carers are often sharing the stress and responsibility of looking after the healthcare of consumers. They feel personally responsible for meeting not only physical, but also information needs of people they care for. With the internet being almost a default source of a wide variety of information, and health information in particular, this interview-based chapter reflects on what are the opportunities and challenges for information and communication technology (ICT) researchers who aim to address the personalized needs for quality healthcare information provision. Professor Frada Burstein is a leading information technology researcher specializing in smart information portals in health care. Her research has contributed to the transformations in web-based information systems architecture to empower patients. She was named the ICT Educator of the Year for her pioneering work in knowledge management and ICT education. In this interview with Grant Meredith, she reveals how her intense experiences caring for her father led her to focus her intelligent systems research toward health care.

Using a novel bricolage approach incorporating autoethnography, this project posed the question: “How do students who stutter negotiate their university experiences in Australia?” In 2008, a unique, web-based audit of 39 Australian public universities concluded that little publicly accessible information about stuttering support services was available for prospective university students. In many ways, stuttering is absent from disability classifications and service systems in higher education. An online survey of 102 Australian university students who stutter, and follow-up individual interviews with 15 students, revealed how these students manage their social identities from enrolment through to graduation. Only a minority of students reported ever formally disclosing their functional impairment to university support services or academic staff. This meant they rejected and/or avoided the disability label and associated stigma. The students were found to exercise a high degree of individual agency and creativity throughout their university journey. Many employed ‘concessional bargaining’ techniques to effectively navigate the oral assessment requirements during their degrees. Analysis of the interview and survey data is interspersed with critical self-reflection by the author – as a university lecturer who himself stutters. This thesis makes a significant contribution to shaping our understanding of the social identities and trajectories of university students who stutter. These students have been recast as positive, purposeful, resourceful and creative agents whose actions can be largely understood from a social model of disability. A series of recommendations for supporting and teaching these students are made to key stakeholders in higher education.

Many studies have been conducted to explore the motivations of why video games players play their selected games. However very little research has focused on mobile gamers. In addition, Australian studies on the topic are sparse. This paper aimed to discover what motivates a mobile gamer from the perspective of the initial motivational factors attracting them to a mobile game, and the motivational factors that provide interest to continue playing and thereby increase game longevity. A survey was conducted online for Australian participants, which attracted 123 respondents. The survey was formulated by focusing on the 12 key subcomponents as motivational factors of the Gamer Motivational Profile v2 model devised by Quantic Foundry. It was discovered that mobile gamers are a completely different breed of gamer in contrast to the general video gamer. Strategy and challenge which are subcomponents of mastery proved popular among all mobile gamers, while destruction and excitement, subcomponents of action, were often the least motivating factors of all. With the newly discovered data, perhaps mobile game developers can pursue the correct avenues of game design when catering to their target audience.

This book aims to foster collaborations between patients who have intense lived experience with a medical condition or family violence and researchers investigating them. Inviting patients or survivors into the research team is found to have significant advantages, and chapters review the literature on the benefits they can bring to investigative research teams. The collaboration can take place at multiple stages of research from helping to research design, participating in co-investigators, contributing to the interpretation of results, etc. The conditions addressed in this book include medical conditions from anxiety, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, lupus, asthma, chronic kidney disease, etc. The authors are higher degree students, academics, and active research team members who share their experiences. This is be instrumental in helping patients and survivors decide whether to transition to research. It will also support research team leaders in determining how to benefit from the new perspectives researchers with lived experience bring. The personal narratives provide insight into the challenges and rewards of having lived experience while conducting research.

The emergence of any new educational technology is often accompanied by inflated expectations about its potential for transforming pedagogical practice and improving student learning outcomes. A critique of the rhetoric accompanying the evolution of 3D virtual world education reveals a similar pattern, with the initial hype based more on rhetoric than research demonstrating the extent to which rhetoric matches reality. Addressed are the perceived gaps in the literature through a critique of the rhetoric evident throughout the evolution of the application of virtual worlds in education and the reality based on the reported experiences of experts in the field of educational technology, who are all members of the Australian and New Zealand Virtual Worlds Working Group. The experiences reported highlight a range of effective virtual world collaborative and communicative teaching experiences conducted in members' institutions. Perspectives vary from those whose reality is the actuation of the initial rhetoric in the early years of virtual world education, to those whose reality is fraught with challenges that belie the rhetoric. Although there are concerns over institutional resistance, restrictions, and outdated processes on the one-hand, and excitement over the rapid emergence of innovation on the other, the prevailing reality seems to be that virtual world education is both persistent and sustainable. Explored are critical perspectives on the rhetoric and reality on the educational uptake and use of virtual worlds in higher education, providing an overview of the current and future directions for learning in virtual worlds.

Immunology is a complex field requiring rapid memorisation of numerous components. An indepth understanding of cellular and molecular biology is required before even moderately advanced concepts can be taught. We sought methods that actively engage students and help develop new knowledge and consolidate existing concepts to support lectures. We created an interactive and entertaining prototype immunology computer game as a tool for learning and revision, with the ability to interactively cover course content outside of class that modern learners expect. Our prototype appears to be a successful study aid when used additionally to attendance at lectures. We seek to continue the development of the game in a higher education context, but also produce a modified version for a secondary school context, in an effort to raise the profile of this key health area and promote learning for the future through the study of the sciences prior to students entering higher education.

The use of virtual worlds and video games offer exciting new avenues for the treatment of communication disorders and ongoing client support. But these new avenues need time to be envisaged, developed and rigorously evaluated. Also, perhaps the potential users themselves of such systems will need additional time to become comfortable and able to interact efficiently with them. Conceivably during this era of rapid technological advancements some basic virtual systems could be more swiftly introduced and trialled in order to complement existing therapy and support methods. A video-based simulation platform called Scenari-Aid fits this criterion. The aim of this study was to survey the perceptions of people who stutter who had used Scenari-Aid to assist them with their fluency and related anxieties. Could a simple, and relatively cheap to develop, simulation system have perceived benefits for a person who stutters and could these perceived benefits be translated beyond their practice environment? Over a six month period starting in late 2011, a 54 question online survey was made avail able to people who stutter and who were members of Speak Easy Australia and the McGuire Programme (Australia). To be eligible for the study you had to be over 18, have worked through a majority of the scenarios that were included in the Scenari-Aid application and have given the application more than one single attempt. It was assumed that most of the respondents would have been actively using a fluency shaping technique of some form during that time period. Questions were themed in terms of product quality, perceptions of fluency, value to therapy, effect on anxiety and product worth. Overall 37 completed responses were gathered and analysed using descriptive statistics. The results of this study were very encouraging in terms of the perceived effects that a simple simulation system could offer a person who stutters. Broadly speaking a majority of the users of Scenari-Aid found the system intuitive to use and understand. The most encouraging results stemmed from respondent's perception of their fluency and anxiety. Users indicated that by using this simple system that they felt their levels of fluency and speech confidence increasing. In terms of anxiety a majority of the users indicated that the system helped to ease anxieties related to speaking in public. Importantly though a majority of the users indicated that the system assisted them to better manage their speech and aided with self-critiquing speech progress. The results of this study indicate that there are perceived benefits for people who stutter to use video-based simulations to assist them with overall levels of fluency and social speaking confidence. The study also indicates that such a system could perhaps compliment conventional speech therapy and related support systems. More research is now required to investigate beyond user perceptions and to evaluate if indeed a simple video-based simulation system has real positive effects on rates of fluency, levels of anxiety and worth to conventional therapy techniques.
