A framework for data privacy and security accountability in data breach communications

  • Description: Organisations need to take steps to protect the privacy and security of the personal information they hold. However, when data is breached, how do individuals know whether the organisation took reasonable steps to protect their data? When breached organisations notify affected individuals, this communication is likely to be one of the few windows into the incident from the outside and can become an important artefact for research. This desktop study aimed to consider the extent to which publicly available Australian data breach communications reflect data privacy and security best practices. This paper presents a brief review of literature and government guidance on data security and privacy best practices, along with the results of a qualitative content analysis of 33 publicly available Australian data breach communications. This analysis illustrated that there was little reflection of data privacy and security practices. Literature, government guidance and the content analysis were used to inform and develop a new voluntary framework for organisations. This consists of a series of evaluation questions divided into two broad categories: responsible data management and responsible portrayal of the breach. The framework has the potential to help organisations plan the inclusion of data privacy and security management aspects in their data breach communications. This could assist organisations to address their legal and ethical responsibility to account for their actions in managing privacy and security of the personal data they hold. © 2022

  • Description: The concept of friend and friendship are critical to both theoretical and empirical studies of social relations, social media and social networks. Measuring the closeness among friends is a big issue for developing online social networking services (SNS) such as Facebook. This paper will address this issue by proposing a technique for ranking friendship closeness in SNS. The technique consists of an algorithm for ranking need-driven friendship closeness and an algorithm for behaviour-based friendship closeness in online social networking sites. The former is based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, while the latter is based on behaviours of users on Facebook and TOPSIS. Examples provided illustrate the viability of the proposed algorithms. The research in this paper shows that ranking friendship closeness will facilitate understanding of needs and behaviours of friends and of friendships in SNS.   • Description: Ever-growing and rapidly changing healthcare information systems (HIS) encourage many new technologies to integrate with it to enrich the treatment and facilitate patients. Blockchain, a decentralised digital ledger, is legitimately disrupting traditional HIS due to its characteristics such as immutability, interoperability, decentralise, and security. Blockchain' applications in healthcare industries are attracting investors and organisations to develop platforms for future. However, security and privacy concerns hinder blockchain adoption in the health sector. Therefore, there is a need to develop deeper understandings about these issues and require strategies to address these issues so that the desired values can be obtained. Besides, privacy could mean different to different people such as patients, doctors, and admin staff. Therefore, there is a need to explore it from various stakeholder perspectives too. Using interpretive qualitative research approach, this research-in-progress will extend the body of knowledge by scrutinising the stakeholders' perception of privacy concerns and its relationship in blockchain based HIS. The findings of this study will contribute to address privacy issues emerged from the research and help to eliminate them before implementing blockchain. This paper supplies an appropriate research approach for multidimensional research in healthcare. In addition, this research-in progress will formulate a framework which provide awareness to stakeholders about privacy issues when they use blockchain based HIS in future. © 2022 ACM.

  • Description: Given the rapid move of organisations towards blockchain adoption, this paper focuses on the niche area associated with blockchain technology adoption. Literature is scarce around the explorative view of the blockchain adoption process and a need to identify the interplay of human and non-human elements at several points that influence the actions and ultimately the decision to adopt a blockchain application. This study investigates the blockchain adoption process from an explorative view and determines yet uncovered aspects to be considered before and while adopting blockchain. For this purpose, the study employed an Innovation Translation approach informed by Actor-Network Theory to identify the interactions among actors at each moment of blockchain adoption. The results of the study are crucial for blockchain literature as it fills gaps of empirically investigated, explorative and dynamic insight into the process and assists potential adopters in realising the interactions required before and during successful adoption process

  • Description: Big data analytics and business analytics are a disruptive technology and innovative solution for enterprise development. However, what is the relationship between business analytics, big data analytics, and enterprise information systems (EIS)? How can business analytics enhance the development of EIS? How can analytics be incorporated into EIS? These are still big issues. This article addresses these three issues by proposing ontology of business analytics, presenting an analytics service-oriented architecture (ASOA) and applying ASOA to EIS, where our surveyed data analysis showed that the proposed ASOA is viable for developing EIS. This article then examines incorporation of business analytics into EIS through proposing a model for business analytics service-based EIS, or ASEIS for short. The proposed approach in this article might facilitate the research and development of EIS, business analytics, big data analytics, and business intelligence.

  • Description: Project managers' email in-boxes often contain hundreds of emails. Analysis of this incoming communication is most likely to provide potentially useful information about team members, their activities and their experiences while performing these activities. However, a project manager who wants to analyze indicators for the state of the project based on stored emails, faces the challenge of how to link semi-structured information on common concepts. Through measurable characteristics of inter-personal communication covering both factual (technical) and personal (human) factors extracted from observations and analysis of "communication" and "communication content", this paper presents a novel approach to application of "communication metrics". To increase project managers' competencies in decoding communication records from their email in-box we focus on "communication metrics" which enables identification of features that might negatively affect progress of the project, the project manager and team members. This in turn provides significant insights into indicators for the state of project health. © PACIS 2018.

  • Description: Purpose: The purpose of this research paper was to analyse the counterstrategies to mitigate cybersecurity challenges using organisational learning loops amidst major crises in the Higher Education and Research Sector (HERS). The authors proposed the learning loop framework revealing several counterstrategies to mitigate cybersecurity issues in HERS. The counterstrategies are explored, and their implications for research and practice are discussed. Methodology: The qualitative methodology was adopted, and semi-structured interviews with cybersecurity experts and top managers were conducted. Results: This exploratory paper proposed the learning loop framework revealing introducing new policies and procedures, changing existing systems, partnership with other companies, integrating new software, improving employee learning, enhancing security, and monitoring and evaluating security measures as significant counterstrategies to ensure the cyber-safe working environment in HERS. These counterstrategies will help to tackle cybersecurity in HERS, not only during the current major crisis but also in the future. Implications: The outcomes provide insightful implications for both theory and practice. This study proposes a learning framework that prioritises counterstrategies to mitigate cybersecurity challenges in HERS amidst a major crisis. The proposed model can help HERS be more efficient in mitigating cybersecurity issues in future crises. The counterstrategies can also be tested, adopted, and implemented by practitioners working in other sectors to mitigate cybersecurity issues during and after major crises. Future research can focus on addressing the shortcomings and limitations of the proposed learning framework adopted by HERS. © 2024 by the authors.

  • Description: Treatment refers to the therapy to treat a disease or a health issue. Treatment in this situation is similar to medical treatment which mainly uses medicines in an attempt to relieve the pain or even stop the disease. However, medicines themselves could not entirely cure the disease (in this case, diabetes), the patients will need more intervention which will be introduced in the next section. In most of documents for diabetic treatment, insulin therapy may be the main factor, however it would seem that diabetic patient needs more than just insulin. Therefore, TCM – traditional Chinese medicine – is recommended in the diabetic treatment as a lot of its remedies not only adjust insulin but also maintain good health for the patients. This section presents some of the TCM remedies to treat diabetes. As mentioned, diabetic patients are treated by lifestyle intervention and insulin therapy according to their diabetic status. The prevalence of diabetes and its complications leads to the requirement of treatment and care plan. Guidelines for T2D treatment indicated the following primary areas: lifestyle improvement which involves at least two and half hours of physical operations every week, dietary plan which decreases the fat intake, and weight management which requires weight loss approximately 7% of the baseline weight; cardiovascular risk factor reduction by managing blood pressure, cholesterol level, control smoking status, hypertension; and blood glucose management such as mono-therapy methods using oral medications to reduce A1c levels (Ripsin, Kang, & Urban, 2009). Self-monitoring of blood glucose levels for T2D treatment is also suggested. The self-monitoring of blood glucose method is recommended because it could enhance the patients’ self-consciousness of managing their diabetic status and require greater behaviours, responsibilities and efforts. Besides, this method is cost-effective in long term for diabetic complications treatment (Szymborska-Kajaneka, Psureka, Heseb, & Strojek, 2009). Another related study recommended that for T2D patients who are using insulin, self-monitoring of blood glucose should be carried out daily at least three times; and for patients without insulin usage the frequency of blood glucose self-monitoring should be adjusted individually (Varanauskiene, 2008). Both studies indicate that there have been controversies whether self-monitoring of blood glucose is useful for T2D patients without insulin treatment. We recommend traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) as the major medicine for treating diabetes according to a report of natural Chinese medicines (Li, Zheng, Bukuru, & Kimpe, 2004) which indicates the results from many cases in various research and medical activities.

  • Description: Blockchain technology (BCT) is an emerging technology. Cybersecurity challenges in BCT are being explored to add greater value to business processes and reshape business operations. This scoping review paper was aimed at exploring the current literature's scope and categorizing various types of cybersecurity challenges in BCT. Databases such as Elsevier, ResearchGate, IEEE, ScienceDirect, and ABI/INFORM Collection (ProQuest) were searched using a combination of terms, and after rigorous screening, 51 research studies were found relevant. Data coding was performed following a framework proposed for scoping review. After careful analysis, thirty different types of cybersecurity challenges in BCT were categorized into six standardized classes. Our results show that most of the studies disclose cybersecurity challenges in BCT generally without pointing to any specific industry sector, and to a very little extent, few papers reveal cybersecurity challenges in BCT related to specific industry sectors. Also, prior studies barely investigated the strategies to minimize cybersecurity challenges in BCT. Based on gap identification, future research avenues were proposed for scholars.

Decoding employee ambidexterity : understanding drivers, constraints, and performance implications for thriving in the evolving work landscapes - a scoping review

  • Description: Employee ambidexterity (EA) is becoming increasingly recognised as a significant factor in enhancing individual and organisational performance across diverse industries. Ambidexterity refers to the capacity to exploit and explore organisational resources simultaneously. Scholars from diverse industry sectors have been motivated to delve deeper into the topic of EA due to its growing popularity. The objective of conducting a scoping review was to scrutinise the existing literature and identify the key drivers and constraints that impact EA to thrive in the changing work landscape. The insights gained from this review can assist decision-makers in formulating effective strategies to cultivate the ambidexterity skills of their workforce and achieve desirable outcomes. This review adheres to the PRISMA-ScR protocol. Articles were obtained from databases including Scopus, Web of Science, and EBSCOhost (Academic Search Complete, Business Source Complete). The body of literature concerning EA is in its nascent stage. 23 articles assessing EA's performance outcomes were identified using targeted search terms and thorough screening. After conducting a thorough thematic analysis using the iterative categorisation (IC) technique, tailored for scoping a review, we successfully identified twenty-nine factors contributing to the enhancement of EA, meticulously organised into five distinct categories: organisational factors, social connectedness, employee behaviour, employee personality, and work environment related factors. Similarly, we discovered four factors that impede EA: functional tenure, team identification, bounded discretion, and conscientiousness. Our findings underscore the profound impact of employee ambidexterity on distinct types of performance. Among the sixteen types of performance reported to be enhanced by EA, ten are linked to individual performance, while six are tied to organisational performance. Notably, our analysis revealed that nearly all studies have relied on cross-sectional research methods except for one. However, we advocate for the exploration of longitudinal studies as they hold the promise of offering a more comprehensive understanding of EA. The paper presents valuable insights into how to cultivate ambidextrous capabilities in the workforce for unparalleled success in today's rapidly evolving work environment. Additionally, it identifies several intriguing avenues for future research that could further elucidate and bridge existing knowledge gaps. © 2023

  • Description: Deepfake videos are a growing social issue. These videos are manipulated by artificial intelligence (AI) techniques (especially deep learning), an emerging societal issue. Malicious individuals misuse deepfake technologies to spread false information, such as fake images, videos, and audio. The development of convincing fake content threatens politics, security, and privacy. The majority of deepfake video detection methods are data-driven. This survey paper aims to thoroughly analyse deepfake video generation and detection. The paper’s main contribution is the classification of the many challenges encountered while detecting deepfake videos. The paper discusses data challenges such as unbalanced datasets and inadequate labelled training data. Training challenges include the need for many computational resources. It also addresses reliability challenges, including overconfidence in detection methods and emerging manipulation approaches. The research emphasises the dominance of deep learning-based methods in detecting deepfakes despite their computational efficiency and generalisation limitations. However, it also acknowledges the drawbacks of these approaches, such as their limited computing efficiency and generalisation. The research also critically evaluates deepfake datasets, emphasising the necessity for good-quality datasets to improve detection methods. The study also indicates major research gaps, guiding future deepfake detection research. This entails developing robust models for real-time detection. © The Author(s) 2024.

  • Description: Australia's Higher Education and Research Sector (HERS) must adopt digital resilience strategies to tackle cybersecurity challenges and manage major crises effectively. In this study, we have developed a digital resilience framework to mitigate these cybersecurity issues. Our findings suggest a range of keystone factors for crisis management, such as implementing cybersecurity awareness programmes, providing cyber support, redefining roles and responsibilities, implying risk management tools, partnerships with external security organizations, introducing policies, reconfiguring technologies, adopting new technologies, and evaluating current changes to combat these issues. These keystone factors will help achieve digital resilience and significantly minimize cybersecurity issues in HERS, not only during the current major crisis but also in the future. This research offers valuable theoretical and practical contributions that can be applied beyond the context of the recent crisis. © 2024 The Authors.   • Description: Despite latest advances in small group research, discovery of group interactions and performance from analysis of small group communication, such as project emails, is still minimally represented. This paper presents a novel approach of studying small groups through analysis of the participants' emails sent to the project manager. We examined 1,105 email messages from managers' email in-boxes across five distinct ICT projects from the personal, social, collaborative, and engaging perspective of the email senders and link the findings to group performance. The study provides theoretical evidence that analysis of incoming communication from project managers' email in-box can be used to measure a group's success.   • Description: Anomalies in education affect the personal careers of students and universities' retention rates. Understanding the laws behind educational anomalies promotes the development of individual students and improves the overall quality of education. However, the inaccessibility of educational data hinders the development of the field. Previous research in this field used questionnaires, which are time- and cost-consuming and hardly applicable to large-scale student cohorts. With the popularity of educational management systems and the rise of online education during the prevalence of COVID-19, a large amount of educational data is available online and offline, providing an unprecedented opportunity to explore educational anomalies from a data-driven perspective. As an emerging field, educational anomaly analytics rapidly attracts scholars from a variety of fields, including education, psychology, sociology, and computer science. This paper intends to provide a comprehensive review of data-driven analytics of educational anomalies from a methodological standpoint. We focus on the following five types of research that received the most attention: course failure prediction, dropout prediction, mental health problems detection, prediction of difficulty in graduation, and prediction of difficulty in employment. Then, we discuss the challenges of current related research. This study aims to provide references for educational policymaking while promoting the development of educational anomaly analytics as a growing field.   • Description: Risk assessments for numerous conditions can now be performed cost-effectively and accurately using emerging point of care devices coupled with machine learning algorithms. In this article, the case is advanced that point of care testing in combination with risk assessments generated with artificial intelligence algorithms, applied to the universal screening of the general public for multiple conditions at one session, represents a new kind of in-expensive screening that can lead to the early detection of disease and other public health benefits. A case study of a diabetes screening clinic in a rural area of Australia is presented to illustrate its benefits. Universal, poly-aetiological screening is shown to meet the ten World Health Organisation criteria for screening programmes. © Elsevier Inc.

  • Description: Chronic kidney disease patients are required to restrict their fluid intake quite severely. Compliance is particularly challenging for many patients but failing to comply can lead to life-threatening consequences. There is some evidence that behaviour change programs based on education are effective, however a program known as Flex that is based on encouraging patients to be more adaptable and adhere less rigidly to a range of habits of daily living has not been evaluated. A core feature of the Flex program is the generation of text messages to remind patients to perform previously agreed habit changes (known as Do's) based on the analysis of Fitbit data. This study aims to apply a constructivist, qualitative methodology with a group of chronic kidney disease patients to assess the extent to which the Flex program has a positive impact on self-efficacy and ultimately on fluid management. © 2022 ACM.

  • Description: This study explored the value of Second Life as a clinical simulation platform for healthcare students. Participants were exposed to the Critical Life simulation and worked in teams within the simulation. Pre- and post-surveys and interviews were used to gauge responses to participation, level of use of online tools and gaming, and input about the experience of using the simulation. The main findings from the study were that participants had positive and realistic experiences using Critical Life as a collaborative learning tool; participants agreed that Critical Life would assist them in developing technical and non-technical skills; participants were not deterred by the technology and perceived they would use it in their own time; and participants agreed that the simulation was able to incorporate effective learning strategies that may improve clinical judgment. Interviews revealed that the participants enjoyed working in virtual teams suggesting that in healthcare education, virtual simulations have potential for use across multiple campuses and universities

  • Description: Computer mediated communication (CMC) skills are essential in today’s rapidly changing, technologically focused environment. This study reports student perceptions towards using CMC to improve learning. Twenty-two Tertiary and Further Education students participated in a pilot study that measured student preferences and perceptions of e-communication tools via a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. Three units of varying levels and complexities of e-communication tools were used in the study, which provided perceptions influenced through varying levels of exposure and usage. The research indicated that students perceived most tools as being useful, but not all preferred to use them. A most important finding was students indicated a shared perception and preference for combinations of e-communication tools, and that by promoting the use of these tools, teachers help encourage students to develop as lifelong learners.
