- Abstract
- With the current political and social instability in the Middle East, a review of early childhood education in the region is timely as society-wide and regional changes in governmental structures and functions have serious implications for the economic, social, and educational lives of families and children. Equally important, an investment in early childhood development could potentially strengthen the skills necessary for future generations to face economic and social uncertainties that may lay ahead in their respective societies (Devarajan, 2015). This chapter explores early childhood education opportunities available to three- to six-year-old children in four Arab countries, namely: Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, and United Arab Emirates (UAE). The last three states form a part of The Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf, commonly known as the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), an organization that also includes Bahrain, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia. The Council was established in 1981 and has fostered a similar educational system in all member states. The chapter begins with a general historical overview of Islamic influences on these systems followed by an individual description of the educational regime in each state. In concluding, the education systems in these countries are placed in conversation with recommendations made for future action to further their quality and service delivery. © 2018 Taylor and Francis.
