Results: Knee flexion strength was significantly reduced at a group level acutely (−122.8N, 95%CI −156.2 to −89.4, p = 0.000) and at 26 h (−89.6N, 95%CI −122.9 to −56.2, p = 0.000) following competition. Hamstring flexibility was significantly reduced at all time periods following competition (all p < 0.05), however these values were not clinically meaningful. Conclusions: Knowledge that unilateral isometric knee flexion strength returns to pre-competition levels by 50 h following match-play in AF athletes is valuable for planning recovery time frames and may inform implementation of secondary prevention strategies. © 2018 Elsevier Ltd

We reviewed current evidence for effectiveness of medium to high fidelity simulation as an education mode in pre-licensure/pre-registration nurse education. A state-of-the-art review and meta-analyses was conducted based on a systematic search of publications in English between 2010 and 2015. Of 72 included studies, 43 were quantitative primary studies (mainly quasi-experimental designs), 13 were qualitative studies and 16 were reviews of literature. Forty of 43 primary studies reported benefits to student learning, and student satisfaction was high. Simulation programs provided multi-modal ways of learning. A meta-analysis (8 studies, n = 652 participants) identified that simulation programs significantly improved clinical knowledge from baseline. The weighted mean increase was 5.0 points (CI: 3.25–6.82) on a knowledge measure. Other objectively rated measures (eg, trained observers with checklists) were few. Reported subjective measures such as confidence and satisfaction when used alone have a strong potential for results bias. Studies presented valid empirical evidence, but larger studies are required. Simulation programs in pre-licensure nursing curricula demonstrate innovation and excellence. The programs should be shared across the discipline to facilitate development of multimodal learning for both pre-licensure and postgraduate nurses.

- Description: Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the characteristics of users of holistic movement practices in Australia to people who were physically active but not using holistic movement practices. A second aim was to compare characteristics of users of specific holistic movement practices (yoga/Pilates and t'ai chi/qigong). Design: We performed a secondary data analysis on pooled data of a nationally-representative physical activity survey conducted yearly 2001–2010 (n = 195,926). Setting: Australia-wide Exercise, Recreation, and Sport Survey (ERASS). Main outcome measures: A range of socio-demographic and participation characteristics were documented and compared between users and non-users of holistic movement practices and between yoga/Pilates and t'ai chi/qigong users, employing descriptive statistics, chi square, and multiple logistic regression analyses. Results: Users of holistic movement practices (n = 6826) were significantly more likely than non-users to be female, older, have fewer children at home, and have higher levels of education, socio-economic background, and physical activity involvement (p < 0.001). Yoga/Pilates (n = 5733) and t'ai chi/qigong (n = 947) users were also found to differ on a number of characteristics, including age, sex, socioeconomic background, and marital status. Conclusion: As a group, Australian users of holistic movement practices differ on a range of characteristics from those Australians active in other types of physical activities. However, differences between yoga/Pilates and t'ai chi/qigong users suggest these practices attract somewhat different sub-populations. To what extent these differences are due to characteristics inherent to the practices themselves or to differences in delivery-related parameters needs to be examined in future research.

The at times binary nature of how the way in which the knowledge and skills of nursing are delivered in higher education can be difficult for students to comprehend initially and synchronise for practice and can lead to feelings of being overwhelmed, withdrawal or failure. Understanding what influences student performance in bachelor level nursing studies is imperative so educators can develop programs that straddle the art and science conundrum and lead to graduate success. Grit is a non-cognitive trait, a drive that keeps an individual on task through difficult circumstances for sustained periods of time. Grit might well represent a key factor in our understanding of why one student succeeds while another withdraws. Objectives: To examine measures of grit in the context of demographic characteristics of nursing students and their impact on student self-perceived academic and clinical performance. Design: A cross-sectional design. Setting: A single School of Nursing at a multi-campus, regional, peri-urban Australian University. Participants: All nursing students (n = 2349) studying a three-year bachelor of nursing degree were invited to participate. Methods: Data were collected using a questionnaire that included several demographic items, questions relating to the student's perceived level of academic and clinical performance, and the eight-item Short Grit Scale (Grit-S) used to measure trait-level perseverance and passion for long-term goals. Results: Students, regardless of their year of study or any other demographic factor, showed grit was the only significant predictor of clinical and academic performance. Conclusions: The strength between grit and perceived performance both academically and clinically, makes grit a valuable factor for development in students as a vehicle for success in nursing programs of study. This paper culminates in suggestions for creative approaches to grit development. © 2020 Elsevier Ltd

Design: Cohort Study. Setting: Non-clinical, state swim team training facility. Participants: A convenience sample of eight non-injured state and national level swimmers from a regional swim team were recruited for this study. Main outcome measures: Ultrasound measures of STT were collected in response to the two swimming practice sessions. Measures were taken prior to each swim practice; immediately after practice; 6-hours post practice and 24-hours post practice. Results: A significant increase in STT resulted from both the HI and HV (p < 0.05) practice immediately post practice. For the HI practice, the STT remained significantly thicker than pre-practice measures at the 6-hour post practice test (p < 0.05) however no longer significant 24-hours post practice. The difference in the change in STT between the HI and HV practice was significantly different immediately post practice and 6-hours post practice (p < 0.05) however no longer significant 24-hour post practice. Coaches believed sprinting, eccentric strength training and proper periodisation were effective strategies to reduce HSI risk. There's a disparity between beliefs and practices when using GPS to monitor sprinting, however, all coaches reported regular exposure to sprint training across both pre and in-season. Overstriding (n = 9) and pelvic instability (n = 6) were identified as key flaws in running mechanics. Currently, testing and exercise training for falls prevention focuses on physical qualities such as balance and strength. Agility is a unique physical quality that couples an individuals perceptual cognitive ability with the ability to produce a quick and accurate movement. Agility is relatively well understood in a sporting context however, its application to falls prevention has been minimal. Because a fall may occur while an individual is perceiving information from the dynamic environment around them while attempting to execute a rapid and accurate movement it is hypothesised that concepts and methods used to assess and train agility in athlete populations can be use to improve practices related to the screening and training to mitigate the risk of a fall in an older adult. © 2021

Falls are multifactoral in nature however, impairments in both physical and cognitive functioning have been linked to their occurrence. - Description: Background: The evidence suggests that heavy workloads, pressure to publish, lack of recognition and job insecurity has led to increased job stress among nurse academics. Lack of proper mentoring, reorientation and transition into an academic role are contributory factors towards the lack of retention and recruitment among nurse academics. Internationally, the sustainability of the nurse academic workforce is an area of great concern. The experiences of nurse academics have not been extensively investigated. Objectives: To explore the work experiences of nurse academics. Design: Qualitative Exploratory study. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. Participants: A purposive sample of nurse academics (n = 19), recruited from all states and territories of Australia, lecturer to professor level and work experiences from 2 to 30 years. Methods: Data were collected using semi-structured face to face and telephone interviews. Data were transcribed verbatim and thematically analysed based upon Braun & Clark's model. The study is reported in accordance with the COREQ guidelines. Ethical approval was granted by the relevant University Human Research Ethics Committee. Results: Four main themes were identified (a) Helping students achieve, finding satisfaction through student engagement, (b) working with challenging students, (c) increased workloads, lack of support and resources and (d) difficulty with retention of newly appointed staff. Conclusions: Although the findings highlighted the interactions with nursing students were a positive experience, many of the participants raised great concern about the challenging, difficult, academically weak, rude, and manipulative students. The growing workload increased non-academic administrative work, and the inability to sustain newly appointed staff were areas of great concern. Doing more with less and not being recognized were pertinent factors that needed to be addressed. © 2021

Healthcare education literature lacks factors related to student satisfaction. Reporting these elements might assist educators in curriculum design that helps to retain students. This is imperative for nursing education with the current global need for graduates. Objectives: To explore, synthesize and report available evidence on conceptual elements underlying the formation of higher education students' satisfaction, with a focus on nursing education. Design: Integrative review. Data sources: Six databases were searched for learner experiences of satisfaction: MEDLINE, Academic Search Complete, CINAHL Complete, ERIC, APA PsychArticles, PsychInfo. Articles were screened, assessed for quality and 12 nursing student studies and 10 conceptual studies of mixed student cohorts were reviewed. Review methods: Peer-reviewed literature in English during the period 2012 to 2022 was reviewed using methods documented for an integrative review. Results: Twenty-two included studies were mostly quasi-experimental, based on statistical analysis of higher education student surveys. Antecedent elements affecting satisfaction in mixed student cohorts were Service Quality, Institutional Image and perceived Value. These studies identified up to seven dimensions underlying student satisfaction. Nursing studies were focused on the quality of service delivery related to teaching and confirmed five elements: Faculty, Learning environment, Curriculum, Social interaction and Development. Conceptual studies also reported ‘consequent’ elements, high satisfaction resulting in positive student behavioural intent, loyalty and positive word of mouth. The details of antecedent and consequent elements that underlie student satisfaction are described. Conclusion: Conceptual studies of mixed student cohorts identified nine elements that inform student satisfaction with learning experiences. Nursing student studies tested fewer variables and confirmed up to five elements forming student satisfaction. There is a need to investigate the impact of additional key elements in nursing students - perceptions of value, institutional image and administrative support. © 2023 The Authors
