  • Description: Drug-drug interaction is one of the important problems of Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR). In this paper we develop an optimization approach for the study of this problem. This approach is based on drug-reaction relationships represented in the form of a vector of weights, which can be defined as a solution to some global optimization problem. Although this approach can be used for solving many ADR problems, we concentrate here only on drug-drug interactions. Based on drug-reaction relationships, we formulate this problem as an optimization problem. The approach is applied to different classes of reactions from the Australian Adverse Drug Reaction Advisory Committee (ADRAC) database.

  • Description: This paper presents the preliminary results of a qualitative study examining the agenda for change being pursued by key influential women in Australia to address male-centred rural general practitioner (GP) workforce policies. Many current recruitment and retention programs do not reflect the needs of female GPs as they are based on the traditional notions of a country GP — that is a full-time, on call doctor with a supporting spouse. As women become the majority in medicine, key women influentials in the rural general practice field are advocating for the restructuring of medicine so that women GPs can be part of the solution to rural health care issues. Previous empirical research and theoretical analyses have suggested that medicine and rural communities are patriarchal. To date data collection for this explorative study consists of 5 in-depth interviews with a purposive sample of key women activists across the spectrum of organised medicine. Preliminary results show how women are pressuring for change but also the sources of resistance they encounter from the dominant medical culture. Key women players use particular collective and individual strategies to advocate for female GP issues. These results reflect some research findings on women leaders and female rural GPs. In conclusion, it is important that women are given equal access to decision-making positions to enable their input into the structure and culture of rural general practice. The recommendation put forward is to build inclusive recruitment and retention rural workforce strategies for female rural GPs.

  • Description: Contemporary evolutionary multiobjective optimisation techniques are becoming increasingly focussed on the notions of archiving, explicit diversity maintenance and population-based Pareto ranking to achieve good approximations of the Pareto front. While it is certainly true that these techniques have been effective, they come at a significant complexity cost that ultimately limits their application to complex problems. This paper proposes a new model that moves away from explicit population-wide Pareto ranking, abandons both complex archiving and diversity measures and incorporates a continuous accretion-based approach that is divergent from the discretely generational nature of traditional evolutionary algorithms. Results indicate that the new approach, the Combative Accretion Model (CAM), achieves markedly better approximations than NSGA across a range of well-recognised test functions. Moreover, CAM is more efficient than NSGAII with respect to the number of comparisons (by an order of magnitude), while achieving comparable, and generally preferable, fronts.

  • Description: In this paper, we focus on rootkits, a special type of malicious software (malware) that operates in an obfuscated and stealthy mode to evade detection. Categorizing these rootkits will help in detecting future attacks against the business community. We first developed a theoretical framework for classifying rootkits. Based on our theoretical framework, we then proposed a new rootkit classification system and tested our system on a sample of rootkits that use inline function hooking. Our experimental results showed that our system could successfully categorize the sample using unsupervised clustering. © 2010 IEEE.

  • Description: This paper reports on an empirical research about the way in which local community relationships influence clinical health decision-making in a health service in a remote town in Victoria, Australia. Evidence-based practice is now widely promoted as the most effective and efficient basis for making clinical health decisions. However, little is known about its use in rural and remote settings. To date, researchers have assumed that the uptake of evidence-base practice among health care practitioners is primarily a function of the levels of training, resources and support provided to them. Drawing upon qualitative data from individual and group interviews with health care practitioners and managers, this research revealed that strong community relationships profoundly influence clinical decision-making. Community influence was evidenced through the blurring of health practitioner professional and private roles, the extent of community ownership and control of the health services, and the politicisation of health service delivery. The results show how local community relationships can influence clinical practice in a remote town. This advances our understanding of the determinants of the uptake of evidence-based practice. Evidence-based practice may be usefully viewed as a site of political contestation. Introduction

  • Description: In wireless local area network (WLAN), signal coverage is obtained by proper placement of access points (APs). The impact of incorrect placement of APs is significant. If they are placed too far apart, they generate a coverage gap but if they are too close to each other, this leads to excessive co-channel interferences. In this paper, we describe a mathematical model we have developed to find the optimal number and location of APs. To solve the problem, we use an optimization algorithm developed at the University of Ballarat called discrete gradient algorithm. Results indicate that our model is able to solve optimal coverage problems for different numbers of users.

  • Description: This paper presents research into learning engagement by adult ‘browsers’ at Australia’s leading outdoor museum, Sovereign Hill, in order to better understand what learning strategies adult visitors are employing and how the museum could further support their learning outcomes. Learning constitutes a significant reason to visit and underpins satisfaction (Hein; Hooper-Greenhill). However, for any learning to take place, the learner has to be paying attention, so museums need to understand how they arouse visitors’ attention. The paper argues that, while outdoor museums have particular attributes for generating interest in learning, a good deal more needs to be understood about visitor’s ‘entry agenda’ their links to learning outcomes. The research revealed a number of findings which supported these concerns. The respondents exhibited characteristics of free choice learners and utilised many search strategies derived from optimal foraging theory. Their visit had a sufficiently transformational effect in that 39% of respondents expressed an interest in exploring further learning after their departure, when only 14% of the same respondents were motivated to visit by ‘an interest in learning’ about history in general or the theme presented at Sovereign Hill in particular. Findings also indicate that the learning, while drawing from the three dimensional setting and activities, was largely socially constructed, within family groups of visitors.

  • Description: Children’s activity choices and patterns of activity in the after-school-hours period (between the end of school and dinner) can be important predictors of daily activity levels The Out of School Hours Sports Program (OSHSP) is a state-wide physical activity initiative that provides structured sporting experiences for children in formal out-of-school-hours care (OSHC) involving 17 State Sporting Associations (SSAs) and 70 OSHC services. Participants in the evaluation were 86 children (27 girls and 59 boys) and 86 parents, and 20 deliverers of the OSHSP at various OSHC services. The average age of the children was 7.7 years (SD = 1.6). Measures included surveys, focus groups, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis. The OSHSP initiative was evaluated over three years on four levels: reactions of the deliverers, advances in skills and knowledge, attitudes of the deliverers, and success of the initiatives against program objectives. The evaluation suggested that deliverers remained concerned about the requirements of delivering the initiative. Often deliverers did not modify their current practices to match the objectives of the OSHSP, possibly due to a clash between deliverer beliefs and program objectives. The children were having fun (97.5%) and learning new skills (89%). Most participants (76.7%) indicated an intention to continue their participation in the sport being delivered at the OSHSP into club sport participation. Children in the OSHSP were generally very active, with most (88%) already participating in sport outside the OSHSP suggesting that the target population may be difficult to access.
